All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: TOM WAGES STORY 1: Lawrenceville Police say Hyundai and Kia thefts are up Lawrenceville police have issued a warning to owners of certain Hyundai and Kia models, urging increased vigilance due to a surge in thefts. The vulnerability, tied to an absent security feature in the ignition switch, affects vehicles manufactured between 2011 and 2021 that use traditional turnkey ignition systems instead of push-button starts. In response, Kia has supplied steering wheel locks to the police department for distribution to local residents. Vehicle owners from the specified years can obtain a lock by reaching out to Capt. Salvador Ortega via email. To further safeguard their vehicles, police suggest implementing additional security measures such as installing kill switches, battery disconnects, alarms, and GPS tracking devices, and ensuring cars are parked in well-lit, secure areas. STORY 2: Gwinnett County Public Schools Launches AI Policy Lab Gwinnett County Public Schools, in collaboration with the EdSAFE AI Alliance, has announced the creation of an AI Policy Lab. This initiative is dedicated to fostering the safe and ethical implementation of artificial intelligence within educational settings. The lab will provide comprehensive policy recommendations alongside educational materials aimed at teachers, students, and parents, emphasizing practical applications of AI. Dr. Calvin J. Watts, Superintendent of GCPS, highlighted the critical importance of instilling responsible AI practices among students to equip them adequately for future professional environments. This endeavor enhances GCPS's ongoing commitment to AI education, building on the foundation set by the AI-Future Ready pilot initiated in 2019. It also contributes to broader national discussions focused on establishing guidelines that ensure AI is used in ways that are safe, responsible, inclusive, and beneficial within the educational sphere. STORY 3: Lilburn gets federal funds for police, Camp Creek efforts Lilburn has successfully obtained federal funding amounting to $1.8 million through the 2024 Consolidated Appropriations Act, earmarked for two pivotal projects. The allocation will be divided equally between enhancing public safety and environmental preservation efforts. The first half of the funding supports the Tri-City Connect Program, a collaborative effort with Lawrenceville and Snellville. This initiative aims to bolster public safety by creating a video and data sharing platform. It encourages residents and businesses to voluntarily register their security cameras, facilitating quicker resolution of criminal activities by law enforcement agencies. The remaining funds are allocated to the stabilization of Camp Creek. This project is vital for maintaining the integrity of the 4.2-mile Camp Creek Greenway Trail, a cherished community asset for recreation and nature engagement. U.S. Representative Lucy McBath has been instrumental in securing these funds, demonstrating her dedication to advancing the welfare and safety of the community. Today's interview is with Jenny Lawson, the president and CEO of Keep America Beautiful, a leading national nonprofit that inspires and educates people to take action every day to improve and beautify their community environment. Established in 1953, Keep America Beautiful provides the expertise, programs, and resources to help people end littering, improve recycling, beautify America's public spaces, and restore and support resilient communities. Before joining Keep America Beautiful, Jenny was the Chief Civic Innovation Officer at Points of Light where she led forward thinking initiatives, partnerships, and campaigns to advance the mission of Points of Light around the world. She designed, led, and championed programs and research to aid companies in achieving their social change goals through the actions of their employees, including the Corporate Service, Council of Leading Brands, the Civic 50, Ranking of Community Minded Companies, and a newly developed digital community, the Community for Employee Civic Engagement. So needless to say, I think Jenny has a lot of expertise on how nonprofits can work with companies and communities to advance social change, which is a topic that I know all of us are interested in, particularly those of us who are part of the Charity Miles Employee Empowerment Program. One of those companies is AT&T which is supporting Keep America Beautiful now through our Employee Empowerment Program, and connected us with Jenny for this interview. I met Jenny in a park up in Connecticut, and we recorded this as a live walking webinar with our members and AT&T's employees. It was a bit rainy, but that didn't seem to faze Jenny one bit. Huge thanks to Jenny for all of her insight, and to AT&T for their partnership in bringing this to life. #EveryMileMatters!

The question of whether Indian Country and the United States should be viewed as separate entities or as one unified country has been a topic of debate for decades. Given the history of colonization, genocide, and ongoing oppression faced by Indigenous peoples in the United States, tribes have argued that they should be recognized as true sovereign nations, separate and distinct from the U.S.On the other hand, some argue that the idea of a "united" America is paramount and that recognizing that separate individual "Nations within a Nation" would be a threat to national unity and security. In this podcast, we will offer perspective on how the complex history and ongoing struggles faced by Indigenous peoples in the United States are largely ignored by elected politicians who (in some cases) come from within our tribal communities.Also...Recently, the Keep America Beautiful organization announced the release of all rights to its "Crying Indian" ad campaign made famous in the 1970s. The Kell boys surged forward with a big fourth quarter to break open a close game and defeat Dutchtown 73-60 in the quarterfinals of the Class five A state basketball tournament on Tuesday. Kell) outscored Dutchtown 23-10 over the final 8 minutes to advance to the state semifinals, which will be played at the University of West Georgia in Carrollton on Friday at 8 p.m. It's the third time in four years they have made it to the state semifinals. Kell finished as state runner-up in Class AAAAA in 2020 and Class AAAAAA in '21. Four Kell players scored in double figures, with Peyton Marshall leading the way with 17 points, Jaylen Colon and C.J. Brown adding 16 points and Parrish Johnson contributing 10. On the girls' side, Kell rode the momentum it built with a strong first half to a 68-54 victory over Bradwell Institute in the quarterfinals of the Class Five A state girls basketball tournament on Tuesday. The used a hot shooting hand in the first half – hitting seven 3-pointers – to take a 38-22 halftime lead and held off Bradwell Institute in the second to advance to the state semifinals, where it will play Maynard Jackson at the University of West Georgia in Carrollton on Friday at 6 p.m. It will be Kell's third final four appearance, who were state runners-up in Class Five A in 2020 and a Class Six A semifinalist last year. Crystal Henderson scored 32 points with six assists. Makayah Harris added 18 points and Jada Green had 10 points and eight rebounds to lead the way. Publix sued Cobb County this week over the county government's involvement in an opioid lawsuit, alleging the county improperly hired a trio of outside law firms to sue the supermarket chain over its distribution of prescription drugs. Filed in Cobb Superior Court, the suit suggests the county was “lured” into the opioid litigation by the firms' “promises of a windfall,” and alleges the county violated multiple laws when it brought them on nearly five years ago. Cobb filed an initial suit in July 2018 against a number of drug manufacturers and pharmacies including Purdue Pharma, Johnson & Johnson, CVS, Kroger and Walmart, and then in 2019 the suit expanded to include the Sackler family, which founded and owned Purdue Pharma, and additional firms including Publix. The suit alleged drugs sold by Publix — one of the county's 10 largest employers — made up “a substantial market share” in Cobb. Publix's litigation filed this week argues otherwise, saying that even the Publix pharmacy in Cobb which dispensed the highest number of opioids doesn't rank in the county's top 35 distributors. The main concern of the new lawsuit, however, is not the merits of the opioid litigation, but the manner in which the county hired firms Simmons Hanly Conroy, Crueger Dickinson, and von Briesen & Roper. The litigation says county leaders improperly decided to hire the firms in executive session with no public record, that the county improperly delegated the handling of the original opioid lawsuit to a private firm, and that the firms hold a conflict of interest in that they represent a number of jurisdictions across the country; thus, they cannot be expected to act solely in Cobb's best interests. It also claims that per the contract, the firms will collectively receive 25% of the total settlement awarded to the county. The county declined to provide a copy of the contract with the three firms without an open records request, which the MDJ has filed. The county declined to comment further on the litigation. Anyone who has the free Cobb County Sheriff's Office mobile app will now be able to keep track of registered sex offenders in the county. Cobb Sheriff Craig Owens announced at a press conference Tuesday that there are just over 600 registered sex offenders in Cobb, and the new feature from OffenderWatch will help keep the community safe in different ways. Owens said the partnership between OffenderWatch and the Cobb Sheriff's Office's app will save his deputies time and money, as they will now be able to see when sex offenders move out of the county through the app. OffenderWatch's technology will also give the sheriff's office the chance to collaborate more closely with other law enforcement agencies, such as the U.S. Marshals Service, on sex crime investigations. F.J. Eastman, OffenderWatch's national business director, said the technology connects a parent's phone with their child's, allowing parents to track when their children encounter a sex offender. He said parents will also receive notifications when their children are in the area of a known sex offender. Eastman also talked about a “no-go zone” on the app, which allows parents to enter the addresses of people they do not want their children to be around and get notified when their child is with that person. In addition to her work with the local affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, Davis was a founding member of Williams Park Neighbors, served on the parks commission and was named Smyrna Citizen of the Year in 2011. Most everyone around the organization is smart enough to keep their mouths shut on that subject. But a growing number of Bombers think this could be the best 1-through-5 since the last championship in 2009. And part of the excitement is the current competition for the 5th spot between Domingo German (Heir-Mon) and Allatoona grad Clarke Schmidt. The Yankees can't stop talking about Schmidt and his recent discovery of a cut-fastball. It has a subtle, late break that devastated the Braves on Sunday. Five of the six outs Schmidt registered were by strikeouts. The 27-year-old righty arrived in camp slotted for long relief, but he now has other ideas. Schmidt was introduced to the cutter by Trevor Bauer, although not directly. Schmidt instead found an old YouTube video Bauer shot for the benefit of amateur pitchers eager to learn the craft. Sitting in a hotel room in street clothes, Bauer explains the grip, the release point and the desired spin of each pitch. Schmidt watched, transfixed, as Bauer broke down the aerodynamics of his cutter. Schmidt decided he should give the pitch a try, and when he tested it on some of his teammates in practice, they encouraged him to use it more often, which now may result in him being in the starting rotation. The 27-year-old Acworth native was the 16th overall pick by the Yankees in 2017 out of the University of South Carolina. He earned his first Major League win last season on April 29th. #CobbCounty #Marietta #LocalNews - - - - The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County. Georgia's U.S. Senate runoff election is about two things, Sen. Raphael Warnock told supporters Saturday in Woodstock: competency and character. Warnock, the Democratic senator in a bid for reelection against Republican challenger and former University of Georgia football player Herschel Walker, made a stop outside Allen Temple AME Church during his runoff bus tour. A spokesperson for the Warnock campaign said about 300 people were in attendance at the event. He urged attendees to tell family and friends to vote, saying, “tell them there's too much on the line to stay home. tell them there's too much at stake... and the differences between me and my opponent are too wide.” Georgia's runoff election could determine which party controls the U.S. Senate. The Ebenezer Baptist Church pastor criticized his opponent, who he said had been dishonest about his credentials, claims to have worked with law enforcement and that he graduated from the University of Georgia. The senator touted his record, including sponsoring legislation to cap the costs of insulin for Medicare patients. Warnock told supporters he has a history of working across the aisle with Republican lawmakers, including Senator Ted Cruz, who was in Canton nine days before to stump for Walker. Walker pointed to the infrastructure bill, the PACT Act for veterans, and bills on gun control, maternal mortality, agriculture and making railway crossings safer as results of his bipartisan work. Officials from Keep Georgia Beautiful and Keep America Beautiful, Inc., recently welcomed Cherokee County to its expanding community-based Network of Affiliates with the certification of “Keep Cherokee Beautiful.” After a year of preparation, KCB finalized its affiliate certification at a recognition ceremony Tuesday at the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners work session. In addition, KCB will join more than 700 KAB affiliates, including 26 state affiliates, and several international affiliates. Currently, Keep Cherokee Beautiful works to reduce littering through programs like “Adopt-a-Mile,” community cleanups and supporting electronics recycling events, as well as providing recycling education through the organization's monthly electronic newsletter. In addition to receiving its program affiliation, KCB also recognized several members with awards that included Lisa Johnson who received the Outstanding Volunteer award, as well as the BridgeMill Homeowners Association, which received the award for Outstanding Adopt-A-Mile Partner. According to Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services, firefighters and Cherokee Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a residential structure fire fire at 10:40 p.m. Saturday on Fletcher Drive near Conns Creek Road. Firefighters found a home with significant fire involvement, and deployed hose lines to begin extinguishing it while ensuring all occupants were out of the home, the fire department reported. Due to the location of the closest fire hydrant, crews had to shuttle water to the scene using multiple fire engines. Fletcher Drive was shut down while crews responded to the fire. The structure, destroyed in the fire, was a home to five residents. One of those residents reported injuries and was assessed by Cherokee Fire personnel but refused transport to the hospital. The American Red Cross was contacted to assist the family with resources. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Developers applying to the city of Canton for annexations, rezonings or anything else that requires a public hearing for residential developments will have to wait a year before they can go to the city council. The Canton City Council unanimously approved an abeyance on applications for public hearings Thursday related to residential projects for a period of 12 months, effective immediately. An abeyance refers to a suspension of a process. This would not affect residential projects that are already approved or in development, were already scheduled to appear before the city council prior to the approval of the abeyance, or public hearings for proposed commercial developments. The city is also reaching the midpoint of the comprehensive planning cycle through the state of Georgia. During this part of the comprehensive plan, the city has an opportunity to adopt a short-term work plan and five-year update to the plan, set to expire in 2028. The River Ridge girls basketball team started its season 1-0 on Thursday night, beating county rival Cherokee 64-38 at home. Kayla Cleaveland paced the Lady Knights' offense with a game-high 20 points, starting her sophomore season out strong. Sophia Pearl, also just a sophomore, was the second-leading scorer with 16 points, followed by Mataya Gayle with 15 points. Cleaveland dominated the second quarter, scoring 10 of her 10 points in the frame. Pearl took over late, tallying 12 of her points in the fourth quarter, including two 3-pointers. River Ridge started the season ranked No. 1 in the GHSA poll for Class AAAAAA, and in beating Cherokee, it knocked off the No. 8-ranked team in Class AAAAAAA. The Lady Warriors started their season 1-0, but fell even at 1-1 on Thursday. Standout junior Toni Warren scored a team-best nine points, followed by Hannah Harris with six points. Riley Simmons pitched in five points and Madison Moody finished with four. Harris was especially active in the first half to help keep Cherokee in the game, with Warren picking her offense up in the third quarter. Both teams are back in action on Saturday, with River Ridge matching up with Carver, and Cherokee looking to get back in the win column against Lumpkin County. Ferst Readers of Cherokee County can provide books to more than 130 children in the county for a year thanks to a donation from the Towne Lake Rotary Club Foundation. Julia Johnson, a member of the Ferst Readers Cherokee County Action Team, attended the Nov. 17 Rotary Club of Towne Lake meeting to accept a check on behalf of the nonprofit and shared her passion for Ferst Readers and education. Towne Lake Rotary issued part of the donation several months ago during a time of critical need, and on Thursday, presented the remainder of the donation for a total of $4,730. Ferst Readers was started by Robin Ferst in Madison, Georgia. in 1999 after hearing from a plant executive who was having difficulty finding employees who could read at the level required to be hired. Ferst made it her mission to introduce children to reading early, and the nonprofit, Ferst Readers, was born. The program provides age-appropriate books and a corresponding newsletter for children ages birth to 5 years old every month. In this episode, Prerna interviews Anne-Marie Bonneau, sustainability activist and author of The Zero Waste Chef about environmental justice, realistic sustainability goals, and activist mental health. The two discuss who is truly responsible for saving the planet, and how corporations across industries (like Big Food AND Big Tech) have the same tendency to divert responsibility for collective well-being.Visit our website for the show notes and more! It's Global Recycling Day! I'm not sure how popular this "holiday" is, but I want to take this opportunity to share a conversation that I had on my local radio show with the director of Keep Newnan Beautiful - a local affiliate of Keep America Beautiful in my hometown of Newnan, GA. In this episode, I share a portion of the interview where we talk about recycling myths and local recycling tips. As you're listening to this, keep in mind that recycling protocol varies from city to city and state to state, so please research your local recycling guidelines. Have you ever thought about the problem of plastics? Statistics are stark. The very first plastic bottle ever produced is still in existence. It can take hundreds of years for it to decompose in landfill and recycling of plastic is presently inefficient and expensive. Join Corinna Bellizzi as she connects with Greg Dayley for a lively discussion around the problem of plastic packaging, the responsibility of manufacturers to clean up their acts and how you can hold them accountable and make a difference. About Greg Dayley, CEO & Founder of SeabarMeet Greg Dayley, the unlikely head of a personal care brand that seeks to remove superfluous plastic use from our everyday bathroom routines. Inspired by an encounter with a sea turtle mired with plastic trash, Greg Dayley has created a subscription solution that could just change how you think about your hygiene regimen. In Greg's view, a personal care solution should also be earth-friendly. In this episode you'll hear startling statistics with regard to plastic waste, recycling rates, and why recycling IS NOT THE ANSWER. Sue Smith's life has educated her as much as she educates others in her position as teacher, trainer and consultant, first for middle school children, and then 30 years for Keep America Beautiful. Sue recently retired from KAB. The love in her voice as she recounts the exciting career she had with them is reason enough to listen. For a woman who had a 50-year love affair with her husband, you wouldn't detect that he recently died from the stories she shares. This is a person who, as she says, was lucky enough to find her passion and purpose living alongside a partner and children who supported her every step of the way. Sue's positive attitude reigns supreme, allowing her to face new challenges and make an impact on everyone she serves. 18WT 027: On this rollercoaster ride our host talk about much more than trucks and trucking. They want to Clean it up America. They jump right into it and say how they want to clean up the litter America and 90% of Americans agree that there is too much litter in America.Patrick brings up K.A.B. (KEEP AMERICA BEAUTIFUL) and what if all individuals would pick up 152 pieces of litter. Why 152? According to the latest Litter in America Study, (that's a real thing) if everyone made the individual action of picking up 152 pieces of litter (all at once) there would be no litter on the ground until someone littered again.Their hashtag is #152andyou ~ That's the amount of litter each person in America needs to pick up to make our nation a litter-free place. Our hosts agree that's a lot of shit on the ground! A lot of this, a lot of stupid people that don't know how to tie down their stuff. Janet calls it a shit-ton of litter. Patrick agrees that is a shit-ton of litter on our streets and highways and riverbanks. They found a lot of things off of Keepamericabeautiful.org website. They also compiled a lot of things that pertain to their beautiful state of Arizona. But it is also useful in all states in their opinion. In this episode we will learn more about the the human and environmental health impacts of plastics, the history and future of plastics, the great recycling myth, a little bit about the zero waste lifestyle, and how to use Cartography to better display information on your maps, which will include my critique on a map that the Magical Mapper is designing. Most importantly, we talk about how You Are Loved! This is part two of our Plastics spotlight. Three months ago we shared some background on plastics, how plastic recycling isn’t working, the plastic ban from China, oh and a bunch of depressing plastic facts. So, if you haven’t listened to that episode and want a little more background before we delve into this episode check out Episode 18 first. Yes, we did this 2-part series in the correct order, just to keep you on your toes, then we added some episodes in between to see if you were paying attention. But before we get started, happy news! Here’s a link to an article about the grey whale we mentioned getting untangled.Environmental and Human Health Risks Associated with PlasticsPlastics pollute at all levels; during its manufacture, use and disposal. The poop detective gets right into some more depressing facts about plastic, starting with its manufacture. Plastic production can release airborne toxins and also cause fires and explosions. Many of the chemicals found in plastics are known endocrine disruptors. Amy drops a lot of facts, but if you want to go down the endocrine disruptor wormhole, check out the half hour video, Our Chemical Lives. Unfortunately 96% of Americans have endocrine disruptors in their blood, but there are all sorts of sources including the food we eat, oh which also has microplastics in it.Environmental ImpactsThe presence of plastics, particularly microplastics, within the food chain is increasing. In the 1960s, microplastics were first observed in the guts of seabirds, and since then have been found in increasing concentrations. There are estimates that around eight million tons of plastic end up in the world’s oceans annually. Amy bums us out with a lot more depressing plastic facts, which I won’t repeat here, although you might see some of them if you follow us on Facebook.Ok, I’ll share one very depressing report from 2018; a survey by the Global Oceanic Environmental Survey (GOES) Foundation found that the ecosystem in seas and oceans may collapse in the next 25 years, potentially causing failure of terrestrial ecosystem and "very possibly the end of life on Earth as we know it"; the main agents of this prediction were hypothesized to be plastic, ocean acidification, and ocean pollution. In order to prevent such a catastrophe, experts have proposed a total single-use plastic ban, wood burning bans while planting "as many trees as possible," "pollution-free recycling of electronics, and by 2030 all industries have zero toxic discharge."Climate Change ImpactsAlthough plastic is often seen as a separate issue from climate change, both its production and afterlife are in fact major sources of greenhouse gas emissions. In 2019, the Center for International Environmental Law published a new report on the impact of plastic on climate change, which Amy digs into. Finally, the disposal results in additional emissions. Also, an estimated 12% of all plastic is incinerated, releasing more greenhouse gases, as well as dangerous toxins, including dioxins and heavy metals. Industry is actually promoting an expansion of incineration in waste-to-electricity plants, which it describes as a source of renewable energy. The History of Plastic and Recycling and the Rise of the Single Use Disposable Consumerist SocietyThe mass production of plastic started about 70 years ago. Since then approximately 6.3 billion tons have become waste, clogging our oceans and landfills with a material that take potentially hundred to thousands of years to break down. Plastic might sit for hundreds of years without decomposing, breaking down into smaller and smaller pieces.Amy goes over the history of recycling in the US. She also relays some interesting facts about plastic bags.In 1907 Bakelite was invented. It was the first synthetic plastic, which contained no molecules found in nature. Global production of plastics increased annually from two million metric tons in 1950 to over 400 million metric tons in 2015, outgrowing most other man-made materials. The Future of Plastics is Tied to the Oil IndustrySo now, we have major oil companies getting ready to ramp up plastic production as consumers try to be more savvy with their plastic purchases. The World Economic Forum predicts plastic production will double in the next 20 years. The Alliance to End Plastic Waste was founded by major petrochemical companies. They’re simultaneously promising beach cleanups and recycling campaigns, while its key members, including Shell and ExxonMobil, announce plans to build new multi-billion-dollar polyethylene and petrochemical plants that produce inexpensive, plastic products.According to a Mother Jones article on the origins of the anti-litter campaigns: the entire anti-litter movement was initiated by a consortium of industry groups who wanted to divert the nation’s attention away from even more radical legislation to control the amount of waste these companies were putting out. In 1953 the packaging industry teamed up with other industries including Coca-Cola and Dixie Cup to form Keep America Beautiful, which still exists today. Keep America Beautiful was basically a campaign against individual bad environmental practices instead of the businesses taking responsibility for their waste.“By pushing for curbside recycling, you’re mobilizing a nation to do a lot of labor for you, bring [trash] back to you at low cost and invest in a lot of infrastructure for you —infrastructure you don’t build and don’t own.”— Bartow J. Elmore - environmental historianRecycling, Circular Economy and Zero-wasteSo, is it time to trash recycling? The reality is most plastic is not recycled. We have been fed the idea that plastics are recyclable, but between the inability for many plastics to be recycled to the high level of contamination in the plastic recycle stream, much of it ends up in the landfill, or worse somewhere in our environment. According to a story on treehugger.com, for the last dozen years recycling has been described as a fraud, a sham, a scam perpetrated by big business on the citizens and municipalities of America. In the end, recycling is a poor substitute for meaningful solutions, such as reducing the number of materials and products we consume and ridding ourselves of our reliance on products with an end of life, which is oftentimes called a zero waste lifestyle within a circular economy. Amy discusses our current linear economy and how moving to a circular economy would be beneficial. Our happiness should not be predicated on purchasings goods. Is there any good news? Some countries have big plans to curb plastic waste, such as Indonesia, which aims to cut marine plastic waste by 70% within five years and be entirely plastic pollution-free by 2040.Companies are starting to listen, but only take baby steps to commit to less plastic. The American Chemistry Council aims for all plastic to be recycled or recovered by 2040, although critics dismiss the goal as unrealistic greenwash. Many of the major companies, like Coca-Cola, Pepsi and Nestle have made plans to include 25-50% recycled material in their plastic packaging between 2025 and 2030. But it seems these goals in no way match the severity of the issue. What can we do?The bottom line to really make change, we have to change the way we view our society. We need businesses to innovate their practices to move towards a circular economy that does not produce waste. To fix this, we need to quickly stop the idea of the throwaway culture being normal. But of course, changing it is going to be far more difficult because it permeates every aspect of the economy. Remember that we vote each time we make a purchase. We should all strive for a zero waste lifestyle, where individually, we attempt to minimize or eliminate waste and therefore avoid recycling altogether. The best way to start is just to buy less, and guess what, our stay at home orders should be making that easier to do!GIS - Cartography! After all of that depression, we finish out the episode on a high note! Jen finally gets to talk about maps! Head over to the GIS Tools blog for some helpful cartography resources, and to see the amazing map Jen created. Please don’t forget to rate, review and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, or wherever you get your podcasts (like Tune In, Castbox Himalaya, iheartradio, etc). Jeff Wooster is the global sustainability director for Dow Packaging and Specialty Plastics. In this role, he collaborates with the entire value chain to promote and improve the sustainability value of plastic packaging. He is the past president of AMERIPEN, and is on the Board of Directors for GreenBlue. He serves on the steering team for the Ocean Conservancy’s Trash Free Seas Alliance signature initiative on marine debris and as Co-Chair of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development’s Roadmap to Curb Ocean Waste (ROW) initiative. Additionally, Wooster serves as chair for American Chemistry Council’s Plastics Division Packaging Team and is a member of the Flexible Packaging Association’s Sustainability Task Force. Jeff Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: Moving beyond the circular economy The future of plastics demanding radical collaboration The importance of affordable solutions Dow's 2025 sustainability goals Advice and recommendations for sustainability leaders Jeff's Final Five Question Responses: What is one piece of advice you would give other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers? I would look at how sustainability interacts with business. If you work in a company and you want to work on sustainability, you don't have to work for the sustainability function to do that. You can work in R&D, you can work in Manufacturing, you can work in Supply Chain, you can work in Marketing and you can work in Accounts Payable. Any of those jobs have opportunities for people to apply sustainability principles to their work. What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability? The thing I'm most excited about is that people are really committed to sustainability for the long term. It's not a fad. It's something that people are trying to think very holistically about and make sure that they do the right things for the best longterm benefit for people and the planet. What is one book you'd recommend sustainability professionals read? I'd love to recommend Patrick Moore's book, Confessions of a Greenpeace Dropout. Not just because he quit working for Greenpeace and started working on other things, but because he has lots of examples in that book of how sometimes things aren't as they seem. Sometimes we have to think in more detail and with a bit more complexity about the sustainability issues that we face. We can't just scratch the surface for five seconds and assume that we have the answer. We really need to dig into the details and make sure that we understand things on a deeper level. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work? I really like the websites of a number of our partners. So, The Sustainable Packaging Coalition has a website how2recycle.info, and it talks about various recycling programs and their label. ameripen.org has a number of useful publications on packaging. There's a great one on the value of packaging that we created early in the organization, but it's still applicable today. The Recycling Partnership has a great website. Keep America Beautiful. Ocean Conservancy. I could go on and on, but lots of great organizations have lots of good material available. People can also go to the Dowpackaging.com website and get some information on what Dow is doing. Where can people go to learn more about you and the work that you're leading at Dow? If you Google my name Jeff Wooster, you'll find some videos and things that I've made, but if you go to Dowpackaging.com, you'll be redirected to one of the pages that talks about some of the activities that we're doing around sustainability. And of course, you can go to the websites of those partners that I've mentioned and see the activities that we're supporting there as well. Once we get into September it seems like the autumn files by and we’re into the year-end holidays. But one ‘holiday’ that we don’t want to let fly past us is in November - it’s America Recycles Day on November 15th and we’re joined by Randy Hartmann of Keep America Beautiful. Changing over to renewables is happening bit by bit - but often there’s resistance because of cost. But a major benefit could be to human health. It could be to the degree that renewables would essentially pay for themselves, according to a new study by a team of MIT researchers. We’re joined by one of them, Dr. Noelle Eckely Selin.
We’re talking about a gross topic on today’s episode of Open Space Radio, but fortunately I’m joined by a few people who are on a mission to clean things up. Today we’re talking about cigarette butt litter, and how both Keep Tennessee Beautiful and Keep the Tennessee River Beautiful are doing their part in their state to reduce the amount of cigarette butt litter, which contains really toxic chemicals that can be detrimental to the environment. On today’s episode I’m joined by Missy Marshall, who is the executive director of Keep Tennessee Beautiful and serves on the board of directors for Keep America Beautiful (KAB). I’m also joined by Edmond McDavis III, affiliate services and training coordinator for Keep Tennessee Beautiful and Kathleen Gibi, Executive Director of Keep the Tennessee River Beautiful. Keep Tennessee Beautiful is a KAB affiliate whose mission is to inspire and educate Tennesseans to take action every day to improve and beautify their community environment, and Keep the Tennessee River Beautiful is the first KAB affiliate to focus solely on a river — the improvement, protection and preservation of the Tennessee River, specifically. Part of improving, protecting and preserving the river is to educate people about the harm that cigarette butt litter can cause to waterways and provide safe ways to dispose of cigarette butts. Tune in to the episode below to learn about how KAB’s Cigarette Litter Prevention Program is helping improve the Tennessee River and the communities along the river through the installation of cigarette butt litter stands that not only provide safe disposal, but also feature educational art on the outside. You’ll also learn how to get your own free cigarette litter stand from Keep America Beautiful!
