The human imagination coupled with ingenuity can be an amazing thing. Through the creative process, what often begins as a spark of an idea can quickly germinate into a full-blown living, breathing entity. One need to look no further than the overwhelming success of 'The Chosen' streaming video season. As the program approaches its fifth season, we must not forget that this global phenomenon began as a simple idea for a Christmas video at a local, midwestern church. Today, nearly 800 million people have watched at least one episode. Peter & Jennifer Emerson hope to have a similar experience with their creative spark of an idea. Several years ago, they took their daughter to a Christmas performance by the theatrically-infused Trans Siberian Orchestra.  Not only did they witness a spectacular performance filled with hard-charging music, dynamic performances, and cutting-edge lighting wizardry, they also came away with an inspirational idea that has consumed the last five years of their lives. While the Trans Siberian Orchestra certainly produces a sometimes mind-bending show, it lacks the most important element of the Christmas story …. Jesus. The idea seemed simple enough. Why not create an immersive live concert experience that blends song, narration, and spectacular imagery to tell the Nativity in its entirety?  This seed of inspiration is about to become a reality. Making its debut December 11-14 at the Hippodrome Theater in Waco, Texas, “He Rules the World” is intent on creating a family-friendly, contemporary live concert experience that explores the characters of the Nativity story of God's plan being fulfilled. Narrated by actor Kevin Sorbo, the production also features vocalist David Gaschen, he of 'The Phantom of the Opera' fame. The Emersons join us to talk about what fueled their desire to launch such a complex visual spectacle to honor the true Christmas story. Listen as they share what people can expect to see at this event and a few things they learned about Jesus that they never knew before.

Midday theater critic J. Wynn Rousuck joins Tom with a look at a couple of new streaming-arts endeavors helping to entertain and inspire us as the raging COVID-19 pandemic keeps most of the nation's theaters and movie houses dark. She leads off with a review of HBO's new all-star adaptation of writer Ta-Nehisi Coates’s Between the World and Me, the testimonial he published in 2015 about the realities of being Black in America and growing up in Baltimore, written as a letter to his son. Based on a 2018 adaptation and staging of the book at New York's Apollo Theater, the HBO special combines elements of the Apollo production and dramatic readings from Coates’ book, with documentary footage from the actors’ home life, archival footage, and animation. It premiered on HBO November 21st and is now streaming on demand. For more information on the HBO Special, click here... Judy also spotlights a four-play virtual festival of works by acclaimed African-American playwright Adrienne Kennedy, produced and streamed by Round House Theater in Bethesda, Maryland. The first play, which began streaming Nov. 14, is Kennedy’s newest work for the stage, a two-person show about an interracial relationship in the 1940s. The next play, co-written with Kennedy’s son, is a semi-autobiographical account of the family’s experience with police brutality and has a cast of 12. It began streaming on Nov. 21. For more information on Round House's The Work of Adrienne Kennedy: Inspiration and Influence, click here. Streaming performances will be available for ticketed viewing through February 2021. Also, though there was no time to mention it, we do so here: tonight at 7pm, Baltimore's historic Hippodrome Theater is hosting a live, virtual celebration of its 106th anniversary. Today, instead of a review, we bring you an interview Judy conducted earlier this month with Canadian playwrights David Hein and Irene Sankoff, the married co-creators of the award-winning show, Come From Away. The couple spoke with Judy by phone from New York City.Their show was inspired by real-life events in the small Newfoundland community of Gander, immediately following the September 11, 2001 series of airborne terrorist attacks in the United States. Those attacks prompted the closure of US airspace and the diversion of all US-bound airline flights. Thirty-eight commercial jetliners were forced to land in Gander, stranding nearly 7000 passengers in the tiny coastal community for the better part of a week. The North American touring production of this hit Broadway musical is at the Hippodrome Theater here in Baltimore through Sunday, April 28.

The uber-musical “Hamilton” comes to Baltimore’s Hippodrome Theater in June, and in this episode of the show: Some Maryland history related to Alexander Hamilton, founder of the nation’s financial system and its first Secretary of the Treasury. In McCulloch v. Maryland, a case that went to the U.S. Supreme Court in the winter of 1819, statesman Daniel Webster defended the legitimacy of a national bank that had opened a branch in Baltimore. The Maryland General Assembly, sympathetic to struggling state bankers, had tried to tax the federal bank out of existence. Webster invoked Hamilton’s belief in the ----implied powers---- of the Constitution to broadly define the national government’s supremacy over the states. As a result, McCulloch is considered one of the most important Supreme Court decisions in history. Our guest, Kathleen Day, covers the decision in her new book of American financial history.A long-time journalist, Day is now on the faculty of the Johns Carey Business School, where she lectures on the history of the country’s banking system and why financial crises keep happening. Her book, ----Broken Bargain -- Bankers, Bailouts and the Struggle to Tame Wall Street,---- was published earlier this year by Yale University Press.

Dale and Randy sit down with Brett and Emily Mills of Jesus Said Love to talk about their work with commercial sex workers in several Texas cities. Their mission is to share the revolutionary love of Christ with people in the commercial sex industry by awakening hope and empowering change. Jesus Said Love became a Charity Champion in 2017.Jesus Said Love's annual fundraiser, Wild Torch, is April 23rd. Wild Torch is more than a fundraiser. The event brings together food, art, music, and dance in the historic Hippodrome Theater in Downtown Waco. More info about the event here.Jesus Said Love's story:Founded in 2003 by worship leaders Brett & Emily Mills, the Mills led worship for a conference focused on ministry to sex workers. Overwhelmed by stories from former exotic entertainers, Emily became burdened for the marginalized in Waco, the Mills' hometown. Within two weeks, the first Easter outreach extended the love of Jesus to women in the Waco sex industry. A small group of women ventured into two strip clubs, armed with gift bags filled with practical, high-quality gifts. The outreach was a success! In fact, each club manager extended an open invitation for JSL to return at any time. For the next few years, volunteers would return to the clubs bi-annually: at Christmas and Easter. In 2007, the Mills made the decision to bring this new ministry under the administration of their already-established worship ministry and nonprofit organization: Bartimaeus Ministries, Inc. The name Jesus Said Love was then adopted for this specific outreach program to women in the commercial sex industry. The burden was for the marginalized: those whom the church was not reaching because of ignorance or negligence. What began as a bi-annual outreach in Waco has now grown into a full time ministry of monthly club outreaches, social work assistance, education, awareness, medical education, childcare and nutritional advocacy in Waco, Dallas, Bryan/College Station, San Antonio, Temple/Killeen, Houston, and (launching soon) Tyler.About the Charity Champions Podcast:This podcast is produced by 360 Solutions and Randy Lane.
