We begin today with another edition of Midday at the Movies, our monthly look at films and the filmmaking industry. Tom is joined once again (on Zoom) by our movie regulars: Ann Hornaday, a film critic for the Washington Postand author of the bestselling movie-goers' guide, Talking Pictures: How To Watch Movies, and Jed Dietz thefounding director of the Maryland Film Festival, and the restored Parkway Theater. We'll talk about the ongoing argument over streaming vs theatrical film releases, and the lawsuit filed against the Walt Disney Company by actor Scarlett Johansson for the studio's decision not to limit the release of her latest action film, Black Widow, to theaters. We also discuss the ethical and artistic concerns raised by the undisclosed use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology to generate some of Anthony Bourdain's voice in Roadrunner, Morgan Neville's new documentary about the late chef and host of CNN's "Parts Unknown" series. And some summer movie nods to David Lowery's fantastical The Green Knight, with Dev Patel as a medieval knight confronting a supernatural challenge, and Tom McCarthy's Stillwater,a complex and somewhat muddled drama about truth and justice, starring Matt Damon and Abigail Breslin. Perspectives On Anti-Asian Bigotry: Facing Hate With Art And Science

It has been a week in which the Asian American community has been in the news for reasons both triumphant and sorrowful. Sunisa Lee, the 18 year old Hmong-American gymnast, won an Olympic gold medal yesterday in Tokyo. On Tuesday, the man who murdered eight people in metro-Atlanta spas was sentenced to four life terms in prison in four of those murders. Seven of his victims were women of Asian descent. Today on Midday, conversations about the continuing problem of anti-Asian racism. As of May, the group Stop Asian American Pacific Islander Hate had reported 6,600 incidents of anti-Asian racist acts in the last year, several of which have been captured on horrifying videos. Anti-Asian incidents have spiked during the pandemic, with prominent political leaders and media personalities disparaging China in particular as a malicious actor in the pandemic. According to a Gallup Poll released yesterday, just 46% of Americans are satisfied with the way Asian people are treated, a 14% drop from last year. Before 2016, Gallup found more than seven in 10 Americans were satisfied with the way society treated Asian people. Tom's first guests today are two artists who are co-founders and co-executive directors of the Baltimore Asian Pasifika Arts Collective (APAC), a nonprofit organization that uses art to advocate for representation of Asian Americans and Pacific Indigenous Americans and to build cross-community relationships. Catrece Ann Tipon is a photographer and choreographer who is also a nurse. Cori Dioquino is an actress and producer, the owner of the Dioquino Acting Studio here in Baltimore, and a force behind the brand campaign, Unapologetically Asian. Then, Tom speaks withDr. Charissa Cheah. She's a developmental psychologist who studies immigrant families and their experience of discrimination and identity. Dr. Cheah is a professor of Psychology and an affiliate faculty member in the Asian Studies Department at the University of MD Baltimore County. She's also the Director of the Culture, Child and Adolescent Development Lab at UMBC. In November of last year, Dr. Cheah and several colleagues published an article in the Journal of Pediatrics about anti-Chinese racism experienced by Chinese American families since the advent of the Coronavirus. That research continues. Dr. Charissa Cheah joins us on Zoom from her home in Ellicott City. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Yesterday, during nearly three and a half hours of raw, emotional, and often irate testimony, four police officers who were on the front lines of the January 6th battle with pro-Trump rioters at the US Capitol gave the House Select Committee investigating the insurrection detailed accounts of their harrowing experiences on that fateful day. Their remarks were punctuated by video montages that demonstrated the unrelenting and vicious violence that greatly outnumbered law enforcement personnel encountered. The videos showed an unhinged crowd that was brutal and relentless in their attack, animated by their belief in the fiction that the election of Joe Biden was illegitimate. Officer Harry Dunn repeated, verbatim and unfiltered, the hateful, racist vitriol that the rioters spewed at him. Tom begins the conversation today with analysis by Luke Broadwater, a longtime friend of Midday who covers Congress for The New York Times. In 2019, as a reporter for the Baltimore Sun, Luke broke the story of the Healthy Holly scandal, which led to former Mayor Catherine Pugh and others being sent to prison. Midday Exclusive: Dr. Anthony Fauci On How We'll Win The COVID War

Midday

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 21, 2021 18:26

For 10 days in a row, the state of Maryland has been reporting more than 100 new cases per day of COVID-19. As we heard WYPR's Nathan Sterner report this morning, the state health department announced that Maryland has confirmed 244 new cases of the coronavirus since yesterday. The last time the state recorded more than 200 new cases in a single day was on May 30th. Maryland's average testing positivity rate has ticked up to 1.65 percent, about where it was at the end of May. The state's positivity rate is still low compared to many other states, but it continues to creep upwards. State health officials say the highly contagious delta variant of the virus accounts for most of the new cases. Nationwide, it accounts for 85% of all new cases. In June here in Maryland, all of the deaths from COVID 19, 95% of the new cases and 93% of hospitalizations due to the virus were for patients who had not been vaccinated. Today on Midday, we begin with an interview Tom Hall conducted last week (July 12) with Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases and President Joe Biden's senior medical advisor. The video of the interview has been posted on our website, but this is the first opportunity we've had to include it on a Midday broadcast. When Tom and Dr. Fauci spoke a week ago Monday, Dr. Fauci thought that he and other government medical officials would be meeting with executives from Pfizer the following day to discuss the need for those who have received two vaccine doses to get a third, booster shot. That meeting actually took place, on-line, a few hours after Dr. Fauci's Midday interview. Tom also mentioned Dr. Fauci's past disagreements with Sen. Rand Paul of KY. Just yesterday, Dr. Fauci and Sen. Paul had a particularly heated exchange during a Senate hearing, which Tom will discuss later in this program with Dr. Gigi Gronvall of the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security. In his 15-minute interview, Dr. Fauci describes the dangers posed by the Delta variant and other mutations of the COVID-19 virus that are spreading rapidly in the United States among large unvaccinated populations. While he urges all Americans to get their COVID shots, Dr. Fauci concedes the difficulties of a federal vaccine mandate, and calls instead for local institutions, local businesses, schools and travel enterprises to develop ways to encourage, or mandate, that their patrons be vaccinated. Dr. Fauci also says federal health authorities are studying whether booster shots for those already vaccinated might become necessary, based on new scientific data. Today, a conversation about Nancy Pelosi, the most influential and powerful woman in American political history. Born and raised in a tight-knit Italian family in a home on Albemarle Street in the Little Italy neighborhood of Baltimore, Nancy D'Alesandro Pelosi is the daughter of a three-term Baltimore Mayor, and a politically savvy and adroit mother. She learned politics early on, but she didn't hold elective office until her mid-40s. First elected to Congress in 1987, she was elected Speaker of the House 20 years later; second in line to the Presidency, and the first woman to hold that position. Her moral compass was shaped by her Catholic faith, and her political instincts were honed by her experience of motherhood. Democratic allies marvel at her mastery of the behind-the-scenes machinations of political sausage-making. Republicans, not so much. In 2018, the GOP spent more than $65 million dollars in ads attacking her, and during the insurrection at the Capital this year, Trump supporters chanted her name and ransacked her office. Speaker Pelosiis the subject of an assiduously reported, fascinating and best-selling book by Susan Page, the award-winning Washington Bureau Chief of USA Today. Page interviewed Pelosi in ten different sessions, and she spoke to more than 150 others to compile a portrait of the Speaker that is revelatory and insightful. The book is called Madam Speaker: Nancy Pelosi and the Lessons of Power. Susan Page will be speaking about the book this Thursday night in an on-line conversation with WYPR's Sheilah Kast sponsored by the Ivy Bookshop. Follow the link for event details. Today, on this archive edition of Midday, Tom Hall's conversation with Michelle Zauner, a terrific composer and musician who has written a wonderful book. One could also say she's a compelling writer who has a great and popular band. The band is called Japanese Breakfast. The book is called Crying in H Mart. Her band is good because her music speaks to universal notions in a unique and universal way. Her book is good because the story is poignant and sad and beautifully told. It's flecked with joy, regret, and insight, enlarged and invigorated by her ear for beautifully formulated prose, a keen feeling for tempo, and abundant grace. An overarching love and respect permeate every page. Ms. Zauner's memoir is a reflection on her relationship with her Korean mother, particularly during the final months of her mother's life, before she died of cancer. Michelle cared for her mother during her illness, and after her mother's passing, she found herself drawn to cooking the traditional Korean dishes her Mom and her relatives had made for her while she was growing up.It's rare for a debut book to garner as much attention as this one received, but in this case, that attention is richly deserved. Since Michelle and Tom spoke, it's been announced that Crying in H Mart will be made into a movie, and that she and her band will write and perform the soundtrack. Michelle Zauner joined us from New York. Today's conversation was recorded earlier, so we can't take any new calls or on-line comments. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On June 19th, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger issued General Order No. 3 in Galveston, TX, declaring that all slaves were free, two months after General Robert E Lee had surrendered to Gen. Ulysses S Grant in Appomattox, VA. Tom's guest on this archive edition of Midday is the author and historian Annette Gordon Reed. She has written a beautiful peroration about the meaning of the holiday that marks the anniversary of that event. It is at once an homage to her home state of Texas, and a wholly original and fascinating exploration of how history and legend and myth all shape what we learn when we're young, how our understanding evolves as we grow older, and how social dynamics inform the evolution of societal understanding as well. Professor Reed writes with erudition and grace, authority and humility, weaving a touching personal memoir into the stark reality of a harsh historical record. The book is called On Juneteenth. Annette Gordon Reed and Tom spoke about it on June 11th. Because the interview was pre-recorded, we couldn't take any calls or comments. Annette Gordon Reed joined Tom from her home in New York… See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

(This interview was first broadcast on May 31, 2021) Next on this archive edition of Midday: a conversation about one of the darkest chapters days in American history. One hundred years ago this past May 31st, a white mob rampaged in a two-day campaign of terror that wiped out a thriving black community in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Greenwood section of that city, which had come to be known as “Black Wall Street” for its distinctive prosperity, was destroyed. At least 300 African Americans were killed. Hundreds more were injured and thousands were left homeless. Carole Boston Weatherford is an award-winning author whose books have chronicled important events in African American history. She has written a book for children that tells the story of this horrific event. It is beautifully illustrated by Floyd Cooper, who is also a multi-award winner artist. It's called Unspeakable: The Tulsa Race Massacre. Anna Malaika Tubbs' History Honors Black Women Whose Sons Changed The World

Today, on this archive edition of Midday, we begin with a conversation Tom had a few months ago with Anna Malaika Tubbs, the author of a book about three fascinating Black women, Alberta King, Louise Little and Berdis Baldwin. It's part biography of these women, and part clarion call for recognition of all Black women. Anna Malaika Tubbs writes that erasure, mis-recognition and historical amnesia are, sadly, part of the formation of African American female identity, and her book is part of her effort to erase that erasure. In exploring the revolutionary power of these women, who came of age between the two world wars, Tubbs shows how their stories inspire the struggle for survival today. Alberta King, Louise Little and Berdis Baldwin were each accomplished in their own right, and in their own way. Between them, they raised many children, three of whom grew up to be among the most significant figures in the American civil rights movement. The book is called The Three Mothers: How the Mothers of Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, and James Baldwin Shaped a Nation. Anna Malaika Tubbs joined Tom on Zoom this past April from Los Angeles.
