Bio: Jenny - Co-Host Podcast (er):I am Jenny! (She/Her) MACP, LMHCI am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner, Certified Yoga Teacher, and an Approved Supervisor in the state of Washington.I have spent over a decade researching the ways in which the body can heal from trauma through movement and connection. I have come to see that our bodies know what they need. By approaching our body with curiosity we can begin to listen to the innate wisdom our body has to teach us. And that is where the magic happens!I was raised within fundamentalist Christianity. I have been, and am still on my own journey of healing from religious trauma and religious sexual shame (as well as consistently engaging my entanglement with white saviorism). I am a white, straight, able-bodied, cis woman. I recognize the power and privilege this affords me socially, and I am committed to understanding my bias' and privilege in the work that I do. I am LGBTQIA+ affirming and actively engage critical race theory and consultation to see a better way forward that honors all bodies of various sizes, races, ability, religion, gender, and sexuality.I am immensely grateful for the teachers, healers, therapists, and friends (and of course my husband and dog!) for the healing I have been offered. I strive to pay it forward with my clients and students. Few things make me happier than seeing people live freely in their bodies from the inside out!Danielle (00:10):Welcome to the Arise Podcast with my colleague Jenny McGrath and I today Jenny's going to read a part of a presentation she's giving in a week, and I hope you really listen in The political times are heavy and the news about Epstein has been triggering for so many, including Jenny and myself. I hope as you listen, you find yourself somewhere in the conversation and if you don't, I hope that you can find yourself with someone else in your close sphere of influence. These conversations aren't perfect. We can't resolve it at the end. We don't often know what we need, so I hope as you listen along that you join us, you join us and you reach out for connection in your community with friends, people that you trust, people that you know can hold your story. And if you don't have any of those people that maybe you can find the energy and the time and the internal resources to reach out. You also may find yourself activated during this conversation. You may find yourself triggered and so this is a notice that if you feel that that is a possibility and you need to take a break and not listen to this episode, that's okay. Be gentle and kind with yourself and if you feel like you want to keep listening, have some self-care and some ways of connecting with others in place, go ahead and listen in. Hey Jenny, I'd love to hear a bit about your presentation if you don't even mind giving us what you got.Jenny (01:41):Yeah, absolutely. I am very honored. I am going to be on a panel entitled Beyond Abstinence Only Purity Culture in Today's Political Moment, and this is for the American Academy of Religion. And so I am talking about, well, yeah, I think I'll just read a very rough draft version of my remarks. I will give a disclaimer, I've only gone over it once so far, maybe twice, so it will shift before I present it, but I'm actually looking forward to talking about it with you because I think that will help me figure out how I want to change it. I think it'll probably just be a three to five minute read if that evenOkay. Alright. I to look at the current political moment in the US and try to extract meaning and orientation from purity culture is essential, but if we only focus on purity culture in the us, we are naval gazing and missing a vital aspect of the project that is purity culture. It is no doubt an imperialist project. White women serving as missionaries have been foot soldiers for since Manifest Destiny and the creation of residential schools in North America and even before this, yet the wave of white women as a force of white Christian nationalism reached its white cap in the early two thousands manifest by the power of purity culture. In the early 1990s, a generation of young white women were groomed to be agents of empire unwittingly. We were told that our value and worth was in our good pure motives and responsibility to others.(03:31):We were trained that our racial and gender roles were pivotal in upholding the white, straight, heteronormative, capitalistic family that God designed and we understood that this would come at us martyring our own body. White women therefore learned to transmute the healthy erotic vitality that comes from an awakening body into forms of service. The transnational cast of white Christian supremacy taught us that there were none more deserving more in need than black and brown bodies in the global south pay no attention to black and brown bodies suffering within the us. We were told they could pull themselves up by their bootstraps, but not in the bodies of color. Outside the membrane of the US white women believed ourselves to be called and furthermore trusted that God would qualify us for the professional roles of philanthropists, medical service providers, nonprofit starters and adoptive mothers of black and brown children in the global south.(04:30):We did not blanc that often. We did not actually have the proper training, much less accountability for such tasks and neither did our white Christian communities. We were taking on roles of power we would have never been given in white spaces in the US and in doing so we were remaining compliant to our racial and gendered expectations. This meant among many other things, giving tacit approval to international states that were being used as pawns by the US Christian. Right among these states, the most prominent could arguably be Uganda. Uganda was in the zeitgeist of white Christian youth, the same white Christian youth that experienced life altering commitments given in emotionally evocative abstinence rituals. We were primed for the documentary style film turned organization invisible Children, which found its way into colleges, youth groups, and worship services all over the country. Many young white women watched these erotically charged films, felt a compulsion to do something without recognizing that compulsion came from the same tendrils of expectations, purity, culture placed on our bodies.(05:43):Invisible children's film was first released in 2004 and in their release of Kony 2012 reached an audience of a hundred million in its first week of release. Within these same eight years, Ugandan President Veni who had a long entangled relationship with the US Christian right signed into law a bill that made homosexuality the death penalty in certain cases, which was later overturned. He also had been responsible for the forced removal of primarily acho people in Northern Uganda from their lands and placed them into internally displaced people's camps where their death T tolls far exceeded those lost by Coney who musevini claimed to be fighting against as justification for the violent displacement of Acho people. Muny Musevini also changed the Ugandan constitution to get reelected despite concerns that these elections were not truly democratic and has remained president of Uganda for the last 39 years. Uganda was the Petri dish of American conservative laboratory of Christo fascism where whiteness and heteronormative racialized systems of purity culture were embalmed. On November 5th, 2, 20, 24, we experienced what am termed the boomerang of imperialism. Those who have had an eye on purity cultures influence in countries like Uganda are not surprised by this political moment. In fact, this political moment is not new. The only thing new about it is that perhaps for the first time the effects are starting to come more thoroughly to white bodies and white communities. The snake has begun to eat its own tail.Scary. Okay. It feels like poking an already very angry hornet's nest and speaking to things that are very alive and well in our country right now. So I feel that and I also feel a sense of resolve, you might say that I feel like because of that it feels imperative to speak to my experience and my research and this current political moment. Do you mind if I ask what it was like to hear it?Danielle (08:30):It is interesting. Right before I hopped on this call, I was doing mobility at my gym and at the end when my dear friend and I were looking at our DNA, and so I guess I'm thinking of it through the context of my body, so I was thinking about that as you're reading it, Jenny, you said poking the bear and before we shift too fast to what I think, what's the bear you believe you're poking?Jenny (09:08):I see it as the far right Christian nationalist ideology and talking about these things in the way that I'm talking about them, I am stepping out of my gender and racial expectations as a white cis woman where I am meant to be demure and compliant and submissive and not calling out abuse of power. And so I see that as concerning and how the religious right, the alt religious right Christian, religious right in the US and thankfully it was not taken on, but even this week was the potential of the Supreme Court seeing a case that would overturn the legalization of gay marriage federally and that comes out of the nuclear focus of the family that James stops and heralded was supposed to be the family. It's one man and it's one woman and you have very specific roles that you're supposed to play in those families.Danielle (10:35):Yeah, I mean my mind is just going a thousand miles a minute. I keep thinking of the frame. It's interesting, the frame of the election was built on economy, but after that it feels like there are a few other things like the border, which I'm including immigration and migrants and thoughts about how to work with that issue, not issue, I don't want to say it's an issue, but with that part of the picture of what makes up our country. The second thing that comes to mind after those two things is there was a huge push by MAGA podcasters and church leaders across the country, and I know I've read Cat Armas and a bunch of other people, I've heard you talking about it. There's this juxtaposition of these people talking about returning to some purity, the fantasy of purity, which you're saying you're talking about past and present in your talk while also saying, Hey, let's release the Epstein files while voting for this particular person, Donald Trump, and I am caught. If you look at the statistics, the amount of folks perpetrating violent crime that are so-called migrants or immigrants is so low compared to white men.(12:16):I am caught in all those swirling things and I'm also aware that there's been so many things that have happened in the last presidency. There was January 6th and now we have, we've watched ICE in some cases they've killed people in detention centers and I keep thinking, is sexual purity or the idea of the fantasy that this is actually a value of the Christian? Right? Is that going to be something that moves people? I don't know. What do you think?Jenny (12:54):I think it's a fair question. I think it is what moved bodies like mine to be complicit in the systems of white supremacy without knowing that's what I was doing. And at the same time that I myself went to Uganda as a missionary and spent the better part of four years there while saying and hearing very hateful and derogatory things about migrants and the fact that signs in Walmart were in Spanish in Colorado, and these things that I was taught like, no, we need to remain pure IE white and heteronormative in here, and then we take our good deeds to other countries. People from Mexico shouldn't be coming up here. We should go on Christmas break and build houses for them there, which I did and it's this weird, we talk a lot about reality. It is this weird pseudo reality where it's like everything is upside down and makes sense within its own system.(14:13):I had a therapist at one point say, it's like you had the opposite of a psychotic break when I decided to step out of these worlds and do a lot of work to come into reality because it is hard to explain how does talking about sexual purity lead to what we're seeing with ice and what we're seeing with detention. And I think in reality part of that is the ideology that the body of the US is supposed to primarily be white, straight Christian heteronormative. And so if we have other bodies coming in, you don't see that cry of immigrants in the same way for people that came over from Ukraine. And I don't mean that anything disparagingly about people that needed to come over from Ukraine, but you see that it's a very different mindset from white bodies entering the US than it is black and brown bodies within this ideological framework of what the family or the body of individuals and the country is supposed to look like.I've been pretty dissociated lately. I think yesterday was very tough as we're seeing just trickles of emails from Epstein and that world and confirmation of what any of us who listened to and believed any of the women that came forward already knew. But it just exposes the falseness that it's actually about protecting anyone because these are stories of young children, of youth being sexually exploited and yet the machine keeps powering on and just keeps trying to ignore that the man they elected to fight the rapists that were coming into our country or the liberals that were sex child trafficking. It turns out every accusation was just a confession.Danielle (16:43):Oh man. Every accusation was a confession. In psychological terms, I think of it as projection, like the bad parts I hate about me, the story that criminals are just entering our country nonstop. Well, the truth is we elected criminals. Why are we surprised that by the behavior of our government when we voted for criminality and I say we because I'm a participant in this democracy or what I like to think of as a democracy and I'm a participant in the political system and capitalism and I'm a participant here. How do you participate then from that abstinence, from that purity aspect that you see? The thread just goes all the way through? Yeah,Jenny (17:48):I see it as a lifelong untangling. I don't think I'm ever going to be untangled unfortunately from purity culture and white supremacy and heteronormative supremacy and the ways in which these doctrines have formed the way that I have seen the world and that I'm constantly needing to try to unlearn and relearn and underwrite and rewrite these ways that I have internalized. And I think what's hard is I, a lot of times I think even in good intentions to undo these things in activist spaces, we tend to recreate whiteness and we tend to go, okay, I've got it now I'm going to charge ahead and everyone follow me. And part of what I think we need to deconstruct is this idea of a savior or even that an idea is going to save us. How do we actually slow down even when things are so perilous and so immediate? How do we kind of disentangle the way whiteness and capitalism have taught us to just constantly be churning and going and get clearer and clearer about how we got here and where we are now so that hopefully we can figure out how to leave less people behind as we move towards whatever it looks like to move out of this whiteness thing that I don't even honestly have yet an imagination for.(19:26):I have a hope for it, but I can't say this is what I think it's going to look like.Danielle (20:10):I'm just really struck by, well, maybe it was just after you spoke, I can't remember if it was part of your talk or part of your elaboration on it, but you were talking about Well, I think it was afterwards it was about Mexicans can't come here, but we can take this to Mexico.Yeah. And I wonder if that, do you feel like that was the same for Uganda?Jenny (20:45):Absolutely. Yeah. Which I think it allows that cast to remain in place. One of the professors that I've been deeply influenced by is Ose Manji, and he's a Kenyan professor who lives in Canada who's spent many years researching development work. And he challenges the idea that saviors need victims and the privilege that I had to live in communities where I could fundraise thousands of dollars for a two week or a two month trip is not separate from a world where I'm stepping into communities that have been exploited because of the privileges that I have,(21:33):But I can launder my conscience by going and saying I helped people that needed it rather than how are the things that I am benefiting from causing the oppression and how is the government that I'm a part of that has been meddling with countries in Central America and Africa and all over the globe creating a refugee crisis? And how do I deal with that and figure out how to look up, not that I want to ignore people that are suffering or struggling, but I don't want to get tunnel vision on all these little projects I could do at some point. I think we need to look up and say, well, why are these people struggling?Speaker 1 (22:26):Yeah, I don't know. I don't have fully formed thoughts. So just in the back, I was thinking, what if you reversed that and you said, well, why is the American church struggling?(22:55):I was just thinking about what if you reversed it and I think why is the American church struggling? And we have to look up, we have to look at what are the causes? What systems have we put in place? What corruption have we traded in? How have we laundered our own conscience? I mean, dude, I don't know what's going on with my internet. I need a portable one. I just dunno. I think that comment about laundering your own conscience is really beautiful and brilliant. And I mean, it was no secret that Epstein had done this. It's not a secret. I mean, they're release the list, but they know. And clearly those senators that are releasing those emails drip by drip, they've already seen them. So why did they hang onto them?Jenny (24:04):Yeah. Yeah. I am sad, I can't remember who this was. Sean was having me listen to a podcast the other day, just a part of it talking about billionaires. But I think it could be the same for politicians or presidents or the people that are at the top of these systems we've created. That's like in any other sphere, if we look at someone that has an unsatiable need for something, we would probably call that an addiction and say that that person needs help. And actually we need to tend to that and not just keep feeding it. And I think that's been a helpful framework for me to think about these people that are addicted to power that will do anything to try to keep climbing that ladder or get the next ring that's just like, that is an unwell person. That's a very unwell person.Speaker DanielleI mean, I'm not surprised, I think, did you say you felt very dissociated this past week? I think I've felt the same way because there's no way to take in that someone, this person is one of the kings of human trafficking. The all time, I mean great at their job. And we're hearing Ghislaine Maxwell is at this minimum security prison and trading for favors and all of these details that are just really gross. And then to hear the Republican senator or the speaker of the house say, well, we haven't done this because we're thinking of the victims. And literally the victims are putting out statements saying, get the damn files out. So the gaslighting is so intense to stay present to all of that gaslighting to stay present to not just the first harm that's happened, but to stay present to the constant gaslighting of victims in real time is just, it is a level of madness. I don't think we can rightfully stay present in all of it.(26:47):I don't know. I don't know what we can do, but Well, if anybody's seen the Handmaid's Tale, she is like, I can't remember how you say it in Latin, but she always says, don't let the bastards grind you down. I keep thinking of that line. I think of it all the time. I think connecting to people in your community keep speaking truth, it matters. Keep telling the truth, keep affirming that it is a real thing. Whether it was something at church or like you talked about, it was a missionary experience or abstinence experience, or whether you've been on the end of conversion therapy or you've been a witness to that and the harm it's done in your community. All of that truth telling matters, even if you're not saying Epstein's name, it all matters because there's been such an environment created in our country where we've normalized all of this harm. I mean, for Pete's sake, this man made it all the way to the presidency of the United States, and he's the effing best friend of Epstein. It's like, that was okay. That was okay. And even getting out the emails. So we have to find some way to just keep telling truth in our own communities. That's my opinion. What about yours?Jenny (28:17):Yeah, I love that telling The truth matters. I feel that, and I think trying to stay committed to being a safe person for others to tell the truth too, because I think the level, as you use the word gaslighting, the level of gaslighting and denial and dismissal is so huge. And I think, I can't speak for every survivor, but I think I take a guess to say at least most survivors know what it's like to not be believed, to be minimized, to be dismissed. And so I get it when people are like, I'm not going to tell the truth because I'm not going to be believed, or I'm just going to get gaslit again and I can respect that. And so I think for me, it's also how do I keep trying to posture myself as someone that listens and believes people when they tell of the harm that they've experienced? How do I grow my capacity to believe myself for the harm that I've experienced? And who are the people that are safe for me to go to say, do you think I'm crazy? And they say, no, you're not. I need those checkpoints still.First, I would just want to validate how shit that is and unfortunately how common that is. I think that it's actually, in my experience, both personally and professionally, it is way more rare to have safe places to go than not. And so I would just say, yeah, that makes sense for me. Memoirs have been a safe place. Even though I'm not putting something in the memoir, if I read someone sharing their story, that helps me feel empowered to be like, I believe what they went through. And so maybe that can help me believe what I've gone through. And then don't give up looking, even if that's an online community, even if that's a community you see once a month, it's worth investing in people that you can trust and that can trust you.Danielle (30:59):I agree. A thousand percent don't give up because I think a lot of us go through the experience of when we first talk about it, we get alienated from friends or family or people that we thought were close to us, and if that's happened to you, you didn't do anything wrong. That sadly is something very common when you start telling the truth. So just one to know that that's common. It doesn't make it any less painful. And two, to not give up, to keep searching, keep trying, keep trying to connect, and it is not a perfect path. Anyway. Jenny, if we want to hear your talk when you give it, how could we hear it or how could we access it?Jenny (31:52):That's a great question. I dunno, I'm not sure if it's live streamed or not. I think it's just in person. So if you can come to Boston next week, it's at the American Academy of Religion. If not, you basically heard it. I will be tweaking things. But this is essentially what I'm talking about is that I think in order to understand what's going on in this current political moment, it is so essential that we understand the socialization of young white women in purity culture and what we're talking about with Epstein, it pulls back the veil that it's really never about purity. It's about using white women as tropes for Empire. And that doesn't mean, and we weren't given immense privilege and power in this world because of our proximity to white men, but it also means that we were harmed. We did both. We were harmed and we caused harm in our own complicity to these systems. I think it is just as important to hold and grow responsibility for how we caused harm as it is to work on the healing of the harm that was caused to us. What happens when one woman says yes to the most dangerous prayer imaginable—“Send me where no one wants to go”?In this episode, we sit down with Carole Ward, a missionary and global leader who has followed God into the heart of war-torn nations, daring to believe that faith can transform even the darkest places. Her story begins in 2002 with a simple, radical prayer and unfolds into a powerful testimony of how God's love rescues, restores, and redeems.Told she would return in a body bag if she went to Northern Uganda, Carole obeyed anyway — and God made a way. From rescuing child soldiers from the grip of Joseph Kony's rebel army, to planting seeds of reconciliation in South Sudan, to mobilizing indigenous leaders across 8 northeast African nations, Carole's ministry is nothing short of miraculous.Through Favor International, Carole and her team are witnessing a missions movement fueled not by human strength but by the supernatural power of prayer, discipleship, and the Gospel. Signs, wonders, and miracles are not footnotes—they're the foundation. But the battle isn't over. As war gives way to other strongholds — witchcraft, persecution, and growing resistance — the call is urgent. The harvest is ripe, the time is short, and Carole invites us to join what God is doing until the whole world knows. In this episode, you'll hear:How Carole's dangerous prayer changed everythingStories of redemption from former child soldiersThe power of prayer and fasting in spiritual warfareHow God is expanding His Kingdom in unreached and persecuted regionsLinks & Resources:Learn more about Favor InternationalWatch Carole's testimony videos on YouTubeScripture focus: Mark 16:20 – “The Lord worked with them and confirmed His word by the signs that accompanied it.”Music by: Irene & the SleepersLogo by: Jill EllisWebsite: menomissions.orgContact Us: brokenbanquetpodcast@gmail.com

The UPDF has launched Operation Harmony to evict unauthorised pastoralists from Acholi and Lango, starting with Aswa, Maruzi ranches, and Apac Forest. The 30-day operation follows President Museveni's directive to resolve land conflicts caused by unregulated Balaalo settlements. It also targets illegal charcoal trade, as the government begins issuing customary land titles. This episode is hosted by Peter Labeja.
In Judith Obina Okumu's imagination, Joseph Kony was a monster. This episode I want you to meet Acen Kevin from Northern Uganda. Acen is unstoppable and remarkable in many ways. She grew up an orphan in Uganda and experienced many hardships and challenges working to seek an education. She discovered the power of community and persevered with the help and support of others. She secured a degree in Accounting and Finance and works in that field part time. In 2021, Acen founded Itinga Charity Education Foundation, (ICEF) to sponsor and help children with disabilities and other disadvantaged children to get some of the breaks she received when seeking an education. She will tell us some of the stories of students who began with little or no hope and whose families also had no faith that their children could ever be successful. However, with the help of ICEF many children already have experienced life-changing attitudes and are getting the education they deserve. Wait until you hear the story about the blind magistrate who received assistance from ICEF and who now is well respected and has not lost a case. Michael Hingson ** 01:21 Hi and welcome to unstoppable mindset. We're glad you're back with us again, and today we get to meet with Acen Kevin Danila. And it's actually Acen Kevin, and Danila is her middle name. She is the founder of ICEF, a charity in northern Uganda that helps children, disadvantaged children specifically. And I'm fascinated to hear about that and to learn more about what the charity does and and so on. But we're going to start by welcoming Acen to the podcast and learn a little bit about her. So Acen, I want to welcome you to unstoppable mindset. Thank you for taking the time. Acen Kevin ** 02:05 Thank you so much, Michael. Thank you so much. And thanks for giving me the opportunity being the unstoppable mindset podcast. It's a great pleasure. Michael Hingson ** 02:20 Well, why don't we start by you telling us a little bit about you growing up and kind of the early Acen, if you will. Okay? Acen Kevin ** 02:31 My story growing up has not been easy in terms of education. I struggled so much through education being unopened, I really did not have anybody to support me through education, but like the sales goes that people are stronger when you're together. So I had really so many people who supported me through education. I was sponsored by five different individuals, people, including an organization in Mara Uganda education. So you can imagine that it has really been a struggle, and that is one of the reason why I decided to give back to the community to see that children who were in the situation that I was, or even was, children that are traveling through education, they can get education. So life has not been really so easy as far as education is concerned. For me, Michael Hingson ** 03:47 one of the things that you do with the foundation, and we'll get to the foundation, but you do a lot of work with children with disabilities. Did you or do you have a disability? Acen Kevin ** 03:57 No, no, I don't have any disability at all. Okay, yeah, Michael Hingson ** 04:04 but that's just one of the areas that you decided that you wanted to work with. So did you? You went to you went to school, and you said education was hard, I assume, because just the normal pressures of being an orphan and and just having to do all the things that you had to do growing up, right? Yes, so Acen Kevin ** 04:24 I really decided to support disability inclusions, support inclusive education, to sponsor children and youth who are blind and those with low vision, not because I have any disability, but because in my community, I see two sides. I see those ones who are empowered, and those one who I educated, and they have the skills they do better. Lacher than the somebody who is blind and is not empowered. Normally, they turn into begging on streets, and they say, they say to start to look at them like a burden in the society. So I, through my charity, and it is what we are doing now, we want to empower them so that they can reach their full potentials, they can be able to earn a living through the skills they get through education. And I am inspired by the blind people who are educated and they are empowered. One of them is the majesty grade one judge who is also from my community is a lawyer. Sorry, it is that is the inspiration I am inspired by people like you. So I want really many people with the disability to get because chance education, yeah, thank you. Michael Hingson ** 06:05 So did you? Did you go to college? Yes, Acen Kevin ** 06:10 yes, I have a degree in accounting and finance. Well, Michael Hingson ** 06:14 that's a little bit different from starting a charity or a foundation, it would seem, but you you got your degree in finance and accounting. Did you do anything directly with that? Did you have any earlier jobs in accounting and finance, or did you decide immediately that you wanted to start the foundation, Acen Kevin ** 06:37 um, with my career in a degree in accounting and finance. I do practice that as well. Even in the NGO, it really helped me to do good accounting taxation. So I still use the same skill to run the strategy, and I practice that before. Yes, accounting and finance. So it has really helped, helped me, yes. So Michael Hingson ** 07:07 tell us a little bit about if you would the foundation, the name of it, and where the name came from, and how you started it. Yes. Acen Kevin ** 07:18 Eating a charity. Education Foundation is a non profit organization that advanced education of disadvantaged children in northern Uganda through provision of scholarships, materials, school supplies and facilities for education. The word eating is the local law language, which means you lift me. So it symbolizes lifting up children out of poverty through education. So eating means you lift me. Michael Hingson ** 07:53 Atinga means you lift me. Okay, I understand that, which is a very clever name and very accurate. Acen Kevin ** 08:04 We focus mainly on disability inclusion and empowering the blind and youth to reach their full potentials. Michael Hingson ** 08:11 When did you start the foundation? Acen Kevin ** 08:15 The foundations, uh, started in 2021 Michael Hingson ** 08:19 so it's fairly new. So it's been, sorry I say it's fairly new. It's been around three years. Yes, Acen Kevin ** 08:26 yes, for three years, yes, but we're already making great impact. Michael Hingson ** 08:32 Well, tell me a little bit about that. Tell me if you could about maybe some of the the people you've helped some of their stories, a little bit, if you would, Acen Kevin ** 08:43 the children that we are supporting, Michael Hingson ** 08:45 yeah, a little bit about them, kind of what successes you have. Acen Kevin ** 08:51 Okay, so, as I said earlier on, that the organization sponsor children through Award Scholarship for education. So the children that we are having and our scholarship programs are children that are really needy, and they are coming from very poor background, so we provide them with full scholarship, and they we educate them right from primary level, secondary level, up to university, then terza institution and vocational depending on the capability of the child. But those children, they are these families that stand out. They they all have different, different stories. Like, for example, we have two families that has many children. They have many children with who are blind. There's one family that have seven children, and of the seven. Children. Four were born completely blind. So in 2019 we started sponsoring one of them. Then this year, we got a sponsor who offered to sponsor a child and is sponsoring one. So so far in that family, we are helping two children, and they it is hard. Life is hard for them, as they are facing farmers and having to take care of the poor, totally blind children and then the rest the seven children all in the family. We also have similar family. There's a family we are supporting now, one girl who is studying in the new school that we have the inclusive schools, and Mary Goretti is the akulo. Akulo comes from a family of nine. There are nine children, but out of the nine, four were born blind, and she she did not really get a chance to study in an inclusive school during our primary. So one of our brother, the elder brother, who is also blind, dropped out of school already, and even her, she had already dropped out of school when our organization was told about her, so we had to pick her, and now she's studying well and learning braille, and she's already in senior one this year. We have met different children with different who are from very poor background. We have one boy that we have been sponsoring. He's already now in senior two. We started sponsoring him right from primary five. He comes from a child headed family. The first time I went to that family was in 2020, 2021, when we started the charity, I shed tears because we could see the grave of the Mother, the Father. And there are these three young boys. They have to take care of themselves. They have to farm to eat. So it's really, it's really very difficult for them, and it makes my I feel happy now to see that the boy we talk is doing well and he studies so he can bless the family in future so many of those children who have the potentials. So in our charity, we are not always sponsoring, the children who are blind, others with low vision. We sponsor all categories of children. However, we have inclusion. So we include everybody. We have those ones who are learn that we are sponsoring. We have those one with without any physical challenge that we are also sponsoring. Michael Hingson ** 13:05 Now, when you say you're sponsoring, you you actually have to contribute to or pay for their education. There isn't public funding available for that. Or how does the process work? When Acen Kevin ** 13:16 we say we are sponsoring, normally, we we don't really have, like, funding grade available. So we keep on donations that come the general donation. And then we also have sponsor child program where we have an individual people, ah, saying that I want to sponsor a child, and we have them sponsoring each children and our charity. So what is the audience not available? We keep on fund raising. We keep on looking for donation for that. And beside the scholarship program, we also provide materials for education, materials like the Braille machines, the Braille papers to inclusive schools for the blind, and we also provide textbooks to other schools that are not inclusive school. So we provide all those materials which are needed for education, Michael Hingson ** 14:20 and that's because the traditional schools really don't have the resources to get those materials themselves. Acen Kevin ** 14:26 Yes, yes. Michael Hingson ** 14:30 So itinga does that. It provides those materials and gives the support to essentially make for more of an equal education for children with disabilities and others who need your support. Acen Kevin ** 14:48 Yes, yes, we we do that. We do that. We make sure. Because, like, say, for one example, in Laos, up region. Where our office is located, you find that there's only one two schools which are giving inclusive education to the blind, and those schools you may go there, they have only two brains that are being shared by teachers and children. So we try to support such schools. Then still in Uganda, you will be surprised if you come here that we still have children that study under the tree, that write down on the on the floor. They write down without men, without books. So we also give school supplies when everybody children facili also give like this, provide this, provide computer so that is under materials for education. Michael Hingson ** 15:54 So I don't know whether this is an easy question to answer. So what does it cost to sponsor a child, maybe for a year in school? Acen Kevin ** 16:05 What it cost to sponsor a child for a year in school? Um, now it depends, but normally when the we are to Award Scholarship, we normally start from primary school. So that's you. You really say it's a hard question, because it varies. First of all, it depends on the school where the child is going, because every school has different fee structures. And then it also depends on the on the level, level of education of that child, if the child is in secondary school, like in Saint Mary's already right now, those who are sponsoring the child there, I it cost, ah, around that is six, 606 188,000 to sponsor a Child per town, so in a year, it's about two two millions Uganda shilling. And that can be how much in Acen Kevin ** 17:08 ah, that can be around 600 pounds sports a child in a secondary school. So the lower level pays also lower the higher levels pays. So space. Michael Hingson ** 17:23 Do you get a lot of resistance from the schools when you talk about, say, bringing a child with a disability into the school? Do they do they welcome? Or is there more resistance because they feel that that kind of a child is not going to be able to get the same level of education or be able to learn as well, or is it pretty welcoming? Acen Kevin ** 17:49 It's not welcoming, not also the welcoming to children with disability, that is the path, and that is why I'm calling this other school, that inclusive school. So they are few schools that do that. So if you take a child when I was still volunteering with the Mara Uganda education plan as an administrator, before even a teenage charity, we had this one girl that had multiple disability and we took her to a school that was an inclusive so the girl was really performing poorly. Sometimes would even get 05 out of 100 because if she's seated outside under the tree, no one would bother if the bell rings, the rest are running to class. No one will care. But for the inclusive school, they have a system where a student, student, like a student, can help the fellow students. Somebody knows that, okay, he cannot see so I can help him if he's moving in a new environment. You cannot maybe climb here. It is not very accessible. Someone can help you push your wheelchair. So it is really hard. It's not really welcoming. If they allow you to study there, then sometime a child go there just to pass and they get a lot of, I don't know, people that discriminate, like, what are you studying for? You can't be anything you know people can discourage and you find that says children are not really happy, but when they are in a inclusive school, they are happy, and they really fit to the environment. They feel important, and they are able to study in that friendly environment and become very, very powerful people in the society. Michael Hingson ** 19:55 Okay, I understand what, what made you. Decide to focus so much attention on disadvantaged children or children with disabilities, that had to be a a pretty challenging decision to make, knowing what you would have to face to make it, make it real. So what Acen Kevin ** 20:17 made me to do that, or what made us to say that the charity should focus in disability inclusions and empowering, especially children who are who are blind and low vision, is because in my society, in my my my community, as I said earlier on, you would see the different in those one who managed to get education and those one who did not. It really hit me hard always when I moved in my town on the street of Kampala and I find somebody who is blind is begging on the street. No, somebody who is having a disability is begging. No. And for them, I feel like the person with disability should even be empowered more than somebody without disability, because if I don't have the disability, I can be able to at least do other things, and you know, but I you really need education, like the blind need education, because right now they are, they Are those assistive technology that help help them to do other things that they it would be hard to do so if you're not educated, it can really be very hard. So I believe that every child has deserved the right to really have education, irrespective of whether your ability, everybody should have education. Michael Hingson ** 22:10 What kind of successes have you experienced so far, you said that you've sponsored children of all ages. So have you had any who were old enough that they've now finished school and gotten jobs or anything like that? Or do you have any examples of children who you have been able to sponsor, who've been able to show that they can learn like anyone else and become more accepted in their in their schools. Acen Kevin ** 22:43 Yes, we have those children that already making us feel happy for what we are doing, because we really see how the charity is making an impact, is bringing changes to the life of children eating our charity, Education Foundation, is working in partnership with the Mara Uganda education plan. So a Mara Uganda education plan has been in Uganda, uh, working in Uganda for the last 10 years, since 211 and when we started the partnership in 2021, they entrusted the children that were already their scholarship to our charity. So those ones that were entrusted to us, they already we have those one that already completed their studies. We have been those ones who are already right now. They are teachers, they are midwife. We have been the one who already completed their diploma in clinical medicine, TiVo engineering we are having those one who have completed already like then we have the students after already doing their degree in education like they want to become teachers. So ready. The charity is changing life. And you see that the children who are from a very poor school in the village, because when we take you to sponsor education, we bring you to a school that provide quality education. So there's life change. Children that we took from primary, they already in secondary school, and they're performing extremely well. And with the children with disability for the last three years that we have worked, we have seen changes in them, like there's one girl joy. Joy is completely blind. When she first joined, she was not very confident, but now she's the one who represent all the blind children and low vision and our charity. She has been representing even other NGO outside. She has traveled outside the country to advocate people, people who are who are blind. So it's really very impressive to see our children, even when they are still standing. You see already the life change. You see a child that came when did not even know English at all, even the interview for scholarship we might have done in the local language, but now they speak English, so there's really a life change. And then with children with disability, one big thing that I also see even their families, their families that already they are they were not having support. They were not having love for such children. Some had already been locked then in the house like the people don't know that there's a child with disability in that family, but the moment we get that child and start sponsoring it, change the attitude of parents toward them. They start to say, okay, because they see how now the child is doing well, is being taken care of, so they also start now to support the love increase have seen. So the mindsets of parents are also changing to see them there. And normally we have programs that parents with children with disability meet together. So you find that they start to they start to see, okay, you are seeing you. Somebody who is blind is already a teacher in the school, is a social worker, is a lawyer. So it also gave them, because if somebody has been in the parents who has been deep in rural village, first of all, you started when some, some people even ask us, now, you want to sponsor this one? Don't you think, why don't you take my child? This one, who can see, hm, I've ever been asked that one, I think two parents did that. There's one who said, You take this one and they leave this one, but after they see how these children are catching up, you know? So it's motivating not only to the to the parents and also even the children. The children get to their mind, get to change. They get to know that they are value in the community. Yes, they can become anything they want, if they study, if they are empowered, so they really strive. But I'm so happy to see how this is making a big impact. Michael Hingson ** 28:06 Well, I can, I can hear it in your voice. I mean, you're, you're clearly very happy and very proud of of the work that you're doing, and absolutely and you're obviously changing attitudes, which is important because we all face that, we face these attitudes, that we're less than other people, and it's so hard to get people to understand that, in fact, we're just as capable as anyone else. Acen Kevin ** 28:35 Yes, yes, that much I've experienced it. That's very true. Very, very true. Michael Hingson ** 28:46 So tell me a little bit more about the whole idea of inclusive secondary school project in northern Uganda, and what that is, and how you're involved with that. Acen Kevin ** 29:02 Oh, yes, the inclusive secondary school in my in the there, there used to be no secondary school which is inclusive. There was no inclusive secondary school in the region, in the whole of Lao sub region in northern Uganda, where our office is created, there were no inclusive secondary school. There were only two inclusive primary school, and in those schools, children were dropping out of school every year, because when you complete your primary then you have nowhere to go. Reason being, the few inclusive schools that we have in Uganda, whole school for the blind, the inclusive school that provide the school that provide inclusive education to the blind, they are far, very, very far from us. And. You don't expect a parents who who is traveling and does not even have a smartphone to coordinate, to even get just admission to go to such school, live a long transport to go to a school which is verified another district in another sub region. Maybe take a child Kampala so shall parents would just giving give it up. And you find that every year these children are dropping out of school, ah, they start going back in the village. And we couldn't imagine it, because for me it's terrible if I imagine somebody who is lying and has no support, no love, no education, no skills to earn a living, I think life can really be very tough for them. So in last year, 2023, eating a charity, Education Foundation and a Mara Uganda education plan took action. We had to say, No, the charity, our charity, is very, very small, but for the love we have for the children, for the heart we have for charity who are like, what can we do? Should we get already exhibit school and we provide them with Braille equipment to support the student? What can we do? Will we manage to build but we started it with faith last year, and so far, we have finished page one of the construction project, which are eight classroom, eight classrooms, administrative offices and the reception. So right now, as I talk, I'm so happy to announce that the school pioneers already with senior one class, and the construction is still going on, but already senior one class is already starting. So next year we shall be having senior this one in senior two, while we had with senior one, then it will continue in senior four, the pioneers will be the first to see the final unit exams. So the school is called Saint Mary's Goretti Secondary School meta. It provide inclusive education to the blind, to those students with low vision. We have a student with celebral palsy. We having students who are learning we are having so it is providing inclusive education to both able and student with disability. And it is amazing. I don't know if you have seen my recent post on LinkedIn, we made a video clip showing how the students are studying together the inclusive classroom. It's amazing. They are studying together in one classroom, and everything is moving fine because they have special needs teachers around, and even those who are not specially teachers, they are learning now to to handle the students. So I'm really so so happy about this school and the initiative already the school, the school is providing not only education, even jobs, teachers who had completed school, they especially teachers, they were able to get jobs in the school The community around now that the construction is also ongoing, and we believe that this is a legacy. We believe that this school will continue for for many years, will be there for many years, to provide inclusive education to the children. I'm happy that the community has embraced it. The community is so happy about the school, Saint Mary's Gore to second with school. I'm being invited in local FM radio stations in northern Uganda many times to talk about the school, so that those those parents who have children with the disability who are not yet aware that already there's an inclusive second school they can to create awareness about the school. I'm happy that even those one who are working with government, they're already advocating they will be having some. Port. And just last town, Uganda Bible Society, they donated to the school the Braille the Braille Bible. We having other po that are donating to us, like the Braille machines. So school has started, and we are really so, so happy about that, and I would like to thank also our partner, Uganda education plan for allowing to support though we call upon everyone who would like to support us so that we can finish we complete the facilities of the school support may not only did the construction, but also equipment. We need those assistive devices. First of all, we have a few brails, and next year, we are expecting other lots of students. So it's impressive, and I'm so joyous every time I just two days ago, a parent who has a child with cerebral palsy, was giving me, telling me how she really struggled to look for schools. She even wanted to leave her job so that she can at least create something, a room to train the so that they see how to train those one their children with disability, because she looked for school, inclusive school, everywhere, she was even trying to call Education Board to ask, Where can I find the inclusive school? So in Uganda, the challenge we are having the secondary school which are inclusive are very, very few. It is more of primary when the child is still young. Yes, you can manage with your child with cerebral palsy, you can manage, but when the child now reach all ordinary level and advanced level, it is hard to find such a school. So this school is really a dream come true for me, for my community. Yes, have Michael Hingson ** 37:10 any of the students, the older students in the school, gone on to get jobs? Sorry, have you had any any of the students who have been in in the inclusion environment or who have attended classes, have they graduated and gone on and gotten jobs yet? Or have you had that level of success? Acen Kevin ** 37:35 Okay, yes, yes, I've had the level of success before. That is one of the motivation for like, for example, this where we have constructed this inclusive school, Saint Mary's, goreti. It's actually at next to the primaries to today, inclusive primary school, all net adults that has been providing inclusive education to to the blind for many years. So many students, many people who studied from net adults and go to opportunity, especially those one who are being sponsored by NGO or hard parents that could afford to take them far to study in an inclusive school, maybe in like in Kampala in iganga, they made it. They made it. And one of the all beings of that school, the old boy of Netta girls primary school made it. He studied law, yeah, he studied law from bucharebe, and he's, he's completely blind, but he was appointed as a grade one chief magistrate, so it's the court judge. Wow, very good. And he has never lost the case. In fact, when he was appointed, even up to now, he has inspired so many people, so many journalists interviewed him, and he can do, he is doing his work, which is really a great inspiration to all the those one who are applying and to all of us who are supporting disability inclusions and inclusive education. Uh huh. So we have. I've seen so many. I've seen those one who managed to become teachers. I've seen the those ones who are social workers, very many, and I'm the another example. If you Michael, I've seen your biography. Yes. So thank you. You all inspire us. Well Michael Hingson ** 39:55 have so you talked about the the young man who became. A magistrate. How about girls? Have any girls gone on to get jobs yet? Acen Kevin ** 40:06 Correct? Any Michael Hingson ** 40:07 girls or women gone on to get jobs after going to the schools? Yes, Acen Kevin ** 40:13 yes. I've seen many girls who become like they are doing managerial questions with NGOs, they are working. That's why I'm saying others are social workers. I've seen others who are teachers, and they are completely they're completely blind, and those one who are advocating, they're working with the organization for for disability to advocate for the rest get education, Michael Hingson ** 40:46 but you do work with children other than children who are blind. It's not just blind children you work with. Yes, uh huh. Okay. Well, tell me, what has all of this taught you? I mean, this was a major I call it an adventure, but it was a major step to start this foundation and to do the work that you're doing. What have you learned from it? Acen Kevin ** 41:12 What I've learned from it? Think I've learned that. I've learnt that everybody, like every child, can really do something like what I've learnt is I've seen, if I've seen how education can empower somebody to become great, because I've seen the children becoming sure having talent like recently, we have been we are performing in Paralympic blind football. So you can see the talent that children with disability have. Some of them are debaters or the two poems I've seen them watch. I've seen them play keyboard, play keyboard, become musicians. So it's really inspiring. I've learned a lot. I've learned that what I've learned working with children with disability, doing the work that we are doing with the charity. So I've learned that if we together, if we empowered and embraced accessibility, disability inclusions and inclusive education, we will create equitable society. And I've also learned that children or people with disability can do anything as long as they are empowered. So we would like to empower them to reach their full potential, Michael Hingson ** 43:13 certainly a pretty important lesson to learn, and I'm glad you have and that you're able to pass that on to to other people? What would you give? What kind of advice would you give to young people who are looking to starting to think about making a difference in their own community? What kind of advice would you want to give them, and when they don't know where to start and so on. Acen Kevin ** 43:45 Yes, I would advise them to first collaborate with like minded people, like minded people, and then they should also know charity, it really has a lot to do with the heart. So they should try to discover, is it really what they want? Because if you have a mind for business, and then you come with the charity, it may not work well for you. So do you have the heart to give back to the community, so I would advise that they should volunteer with maybe other angel PRI and learnt what happens with the charitable organization. How then if they can also do charity work? So there you keep learning. I, for one, I did not just wake up and start a with eating a charity. I also volunteer with the organization, and in my heart, I really wanted to. I. Really wanted to give back to the community. I wanted to at least sponsor one or two children, and I was praying that God, if you can give me a good job with good salary so that I can do that. But it so happened that I got the favor and the way out to operate, to to have the charity funded, which now it's now making me to more than I could imagine. I wouldn't have been able to sponsor many children that we are we are sponsoring now through the charity without just alone as an individual. So it really has got something to do with the heart. What is your heart? You have the you really, is it what you want to do? Because if you have a business mind, don't try it. So yes, those are the advice I can give to those who want to start the charity. It Michael Hingson ** 45:59 is good to explore, which is something that you did. You volunteered. You, you thought about it before you really jumped in and started your own foundation. But you also clearly do work in business, because you have an accounting and finance degree. So do you actually have a full time accounting and finance job as well as doing the foundation, Acen Kevin ** 46:24 no, both are part time accounting and finance doing part time. Then also in the organization, it is I get time to so that I can get time to work, and also my skills in accounting and finance. It has helped me to to run the charity, because we are able to comply to have the annual audited report done, to not have issues with taxations because of the skills. Uh, huh, Michael Hingson ** 47:00 yes. Well, you, you have, you have been traveling on a pretty interesting and exciting journey. Can you maybe give me some stories, a personal story for you about what you've done and and about this journey that you're on and and how it's changed your life. Acen Kevin ** 47:21 So my my personal journey, and how my, the life has changed. Um, it's about education, really. I think my mind is stuck to education, because, as I said, as I said it earlier on, I struggle so much through education, having being sponsored by many people because I was coming to my father died when I was young, And I could not manage really go through with education. I have personally dropped out of school at one time, so I understand how it feels for somebody to drop out of school. I've been out of school, so that's really my personal journey, and right now, having achieved what I wanted to achieve, like to have my degree, it's really great. It has changed my life, and I want every, every one that we support, that are struggling, the children, to also experience this life change. And I'm happy for those who already experiencing the life change. Michael Hingson ** 48:55 Yes, which is great. What are your plans going forward? What do you see is coming next? Acen Kevin ** 49:04 My plan going forward, I would really want to continue advocating on disability inclusions for accessibility, to make sure that everyone is treated equal, irrespective or regardless of your abilities. So I I see myself, or I see eating a child education foundation, together with the marriage Uganda Education Fund and other partners that will come on board. We see ourselves pushing higher and higher i i come from a community where very many people are illiterate. They want to see that many people have education. They are, they are. Able to, you know, to earn a living by themselves, to support others. So yes, and we also hope to complete the construction of Saint Mary's Goretti, so that we have also this, the inclusive school going that can help the children from all level to a level, senior one to senior six. Well, Michael Hingson ** 50:31 let me ask you this, if I might um, what? What would you like? What would you like the people who are listening to our podcast today. What would you like them to learn? And what kind of message do you want them to take away from this? Acen Kevin ** 50:48 Yes, to those who are watching us, to those who are listening to the podcast right now. I I would like them to to know that every child, irregardless of their ability, they have the potential to learn. When they are empowered, they can learn so I call upon all of them. I call upon everybody who is listening to to us right now that they should contact eating a church Education Foundation, or a marriage a Mara Uganda education plan. How there's our website on the bio below, you can support us by through donation, we call upon other organization to partner with us, because together, we can achieve together we can create a critical society. Together we can support disability inclusions. Let's support disability inclusion. Let's support the children. So yes, that is what I would like them to do to help us and the child. We also have a child program. Michael Hingson ** 52:15 Well, if people want to reach out, how do they do that? I hope that they will support and I hope that they will also take the message back to their communities, because clearly you are setting a very positive example that people should follow. And I and I'm glad that we did have the opportunity to finally get together and do this today. Um, it's been a while in coming. You're 10 hours ahead of us, so that makes it kind of fun to be able to schedule a time. But we did make it work, didn't we? Acen Kevin ** 54:10 Yes, yes, we did. Thank you so much for the opportunity, for giving me this great opportunity to speak to the whole world about what we are doing at English and Education Foundation to tell them that, yes, we are supporting children who are blind, the dose with low vision, yes, and we are having the construction of an inclusive school going on. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Bringing the International Space Station down safely: A Billion dollar waste?, published by NickLaing on September 15, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Epistemic status: Uncertain, shooting from the hip a little with no expertise in this area and only a couple of hours research done. I might well have missed something obvious, in which case I'll revise or even take the post down. Money Waste is Everywhere Here in Northern Uganda where poverty abounds, many expenditures feel wasteful. Last night I had a great time at the fanciest restaurant in town with friends but felt a pang of guilt about my $7 meal. Enough of a pang to avoid telling my wife after I came home. A bigger scale waste in these parts is the partial closure of the main bridge across the river Nile, because the bridge has apparently degraded and become hazardous. Vehicles larger than a minivan now can't cross, which has raised the price of public transport by 50% and trucks now have a 3 hour detour. Besides these direct costs, this closure increases the cost of fuel and commodities in Northern Uganda. By my loose, conservative BOTEC the closure costs $10,000 every day (1.2 million dollars in 4 months so far) which Ugandans now can't spend on education and healthcare, while likely causing more crashes due to increasingly tired drivers who now use worse roads. The detour itself may have already cost more lives than would be lost if the bridge does collapse and kills a few people.[1] But there are far bigger wastes of money on this good earth. A Billion Dollars to bring down a space station? Space X have secured an 843 million dollar contract[2] to build the boringly named "U.S. De-Orbit vehicle" (why not "Sky Shepherd")[3], which in 2031 will safely guide the decommissioned International Space Station (ISS) into the Pacific Ocean. This all sounded pretty cool until I thought… is this worth it?. No human has ever been definitively killed by an object falling from space, although there have been a couple of close calls with larger asteroids injuring many while Open Asteroid Impact could be a game changer here in future. This one time though, a wee piece of space junk did hit Lottie Williams in the shoulder and she took it home as a memento. I'm jealous. According to a great Nature article "Unnecessary risks created by uncontrolled rocket reentries", over the last 30 years over 1,000 space bodies have fallen to earth in uncontrolled re-entries and never killed anyone. The closest call might be a Chinese rocket in 2020 which damaged a house in the Ivory Coast. The article predicts a 10% chance of a fatal space junk accident in the next 10 years - far from zero and worth considering, but unlikely to be the next EA cause area. This low risk makes sense given that only 3% of the globe are urban areas and under 1% actually contain human homes[4]- most stuff falls down where there ain't people. Also the bulk of falling spacecraft burns up before hitting the ground. In contrast a million people die from car crashes every year,[5] and each of us has about a 1 in 100 chance of dying that way. Although the ISS is the biggest ever at 450 tons, we do have priors. Two 100 ton uncontrolled re-entries (Skylab and tragically the Columbia) crashed to earth without issue. So what actually is the risk if the ISS was left to crash uncontrolled? The U.S. Government requires controlled re-entry for anything that poses over a 1 in 10,000 risk to human life so this risk must be higher. NASA doesn't give us their risk estimate but only state "The ISS requires a controlled re-entry because it is very large, and uncontrolled re-entry would result in very large pieces of debris with a large debris footprint, posing a significant risk to the public worldwide" [6]. I hesitate to even guesstimate the risk to human life at the ISS falli...

Gloria Laker Aciro was a teenager when war upended her family's life in Northern Uganda. The Lord's Resistance Army, led by the infamous Joseph Kony, were known for their brutality, and for kidnapping children and making them child soldiers or child brides. As a young displaced person, Aciro became a journalist so the world would know about the suffering in Northern Uganda: The abductions, killings, the ambushes, the destruction. But after a few years, she wondered if focusing on bloodshed was the right approach. What if journalists like her could help bring peace to the country? Today, Aciro is director of the Peace Journalism Foundation of East Africa. Peace Journalism -- as you might remember from one of our previous episodes -- is when editors and reporters make choices that improve the prospects for peace. She covers peace and conflict, refugee issues, and the environment, and trains journalists around East Africa in peace journalism. Aciro was a finalist for the 2022 Women Building Peace Award given by the United States Institute of Peace. And in 2019, she received a Golden Jubilee Medal awarded by Ugandan President Yoweri, for her coverage of the LRA conflict and her contributions to current peace efforts in Northern Uganda. Aciro sat down with Making Peace Visible Education Director Steven Youngblood to reflect on her decades in the field in Uganda, and the real impact of peace journalism in the face of war and gang violence. 140. Jumpstart June: Engaging Jesus in Your Emotional Health How do we engage Jesus in our emotional health? We are overwhelmed by all of the things we have going on in our lives. But God never intended for us to do any of it on our own. We need Him and we need to engage Him in every area of our life - even in our emotions and our mental health. Our feelings and the status of our heart matters to God. We need to cry out to Him and share what we are experiencing. Let's ask Him to show us where our heart is not aligning with Him? When we give Him our struggle, we can find rest in Him. (Be sure to listen to Kim's explanation of Psalm 23 and what we need to be able to rest.) When we engage Jesus by spending time with Him at the beginning of our day, it prepares us mentally for our day and to endure our circumstances. When we place our trust and faith in Him, we can count it all joy - even struggles and hardships - because He will use it to grow us and strengthen us. He tells us to cast all our cares on Him for He cares for us. We are here for you! Visit our website and see the resources we have to help you engage Jesus in every area of your life. 137. Maybe He Doesn't Even Care This is the 4th episode in our Maybe Series. Have you ever felt as if God doesn't care about you or about the circumstances of your life? Hebrews 4:15-16 reminds us that God does care and that He can sympathize with us because He experienced temptations. We must be careful to recognize the lies of the enemy and discard those. Instead, let's cling to the truth of God's word. Remember to ask, "who told me that?" Scripture tells us over and over again that He does indeed care. Sometimes we cannot understand why God is not doing what we think He should do. Why is He allowing pain and hard things to happen? The decision we have to make is to choose to trust God - even with things are not going our way. The choice is to run to God or to run from Him. Paul in 2 Corinthians 12 asked God to rid him of the thorn in his side. God tells Paul that His grace is sufficient, it is enough to carry us through. He gave us His riches at His own Son's expense. Therefore, we can be sure He cares. Let's stop seeing things from our perspective. But remember James 1:2-4 where it tells us to count it all joy when we troubles come our way. When our faith is tested, our endurance has a chance to grow. "So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing." We can trust that God's answer is best. We know that God is good. We know that He is faithful, will never leave us, will never forsake us. Cling to the truth - write things you know to be true - and keep them in your truth journal. We have not be abandoned. God cares for us. We are here for you! 136. Maybe None of This is Real We are here for episode 3 of our Maybe Series. We hope you are enjoying this series and finding some assurance around all of your maybe's. Today, listen as we wonder - Maybe... none of this is real. Have you ever wondered if God is real? Do you struggle with doubt? You are not alone. It is okay to ask questions. Be sure to recognize who is causing you to question. Who wants you to doubt? Scripture tells us that the enemy came to kill, steal, and destroy. What is the basis of your doubt? What is the evidence of existence of God, of Jesus? The evidence is all around us. If none of this is real, what is the purpose? We are here to remind you that there is a higher purpose. There is a plan. God, the Creator of the Universe, wants to have a relationship with you. While that is unimaginable for our finite minds, God will meet us in an intimate way and become our Savior, our Lord, our Good Shepherd and so much more. We urge you to seek God, to invite Jesus into your heart, and to receive the gift of eternal life. If you are His and in a season of doubt, cry out for help. Don't be stuck in this season of struggle, go to God. Cry out to Him and seek His face. Pam, Gwen, and Kim can all testify of His presence, of His goodness, and of His faithfulness. We are here for you! As believers, we have a responsibility to be intentional to share what we know with others. Tell others about Jesus, pray with others, and share your testimony with those around you. Talk about it with truth and with grace. Love others enough to share with them. 135. Maybe I am Lost This is the 2nd episode of our Maybe Series. We are wondering if you ever feel lost - as in you aren't sure where you are headed, if you are doing the right things, or if you have more questions than you have answers. What do we do when we feel lost? First, let's rest in Him. This requires spending time with Him, leaning into Him, and allowing Him to help us. Next, we have to go to Him and ask for His direction. We have to listen to hear and know the next step we are to take. We cannot let our feelings, which are not always truth, impede us or lead us astray. The truth is God has not gone anywhere. It could be our sin that has distanced us from God. Sometimes we are blind to our sin and what is separating us from God. Confession is required for us to experience that closeness again. Evaluate your inputs. Who are you spending time with? What do you do with your time? What are you putting into your heart, soul, and mind. What you input determines your output and could cause your feeling of being lost. Stay in God's word. It is our guide. As you read and study, open your hands and ask God to come and be with you. Get to know your Savior all over again. You are not lost, it just feels that way. Run to Him and be found! We are here for you! 134. Maybe... I Need to Change My Habits Listen as Gwen opens us with some tough questions and asks us to define our habits. Are they replenishing us or depleting us? Are they drawing us closer to God or leading us astray? Give it some thought. Do you need some new habits? What habits do you have that need to be exchanged for something far better? When you make it a habit to be obedient to the instruction we find in God's word, it is amazing what can take place in our lives. How do we know if a habit is a good habit or bad habit? It crosses the line when it becomes all about "me". The motive of our heart is what is important and what determines whether the habit is good or bad? We need the habit of discernment to identify the difference in the lie of the enemy and the truth found in God's word. Kim encourages us to identify the lie and find the scripture to combat that lie. Apply the truth in your life. What if we made it a habit to know God more, to trust Him more and to walk in obedience to Him. Let Romans 12:1-2 guide you as you establish some new habits. Choose to know longer be like the world, but to be set apart by the habits you create. Allow yourself to hunger for Jesus, for God's word, for what He has for you. We are here for you! 131. Planting Seeds that Point Others to Jesus - How can we be intentional about planting seeds about the good news of Jesus? We start by being intentional about praying for others, praying they will be receptive and that the seeds will take root. We can also ask God to help us recognize the opportunities to plant seeds when they arrive. In the Parable of the Sower we learn that the condition of the soil matters, which is the condition of the heart. It's up to the hearts of others whether the seeds bear fruit or not. We can plant seeds by choosing to share our Jesus story when given an opportunity. It is our story of redemption. It's easier than you think. Just tell what He has done in your life. We also plant seeds by how we conduct ourselves. If we are intentional to live our faith out loud, others notice and become curious about how that works. It matters how we live our life. It matters what seeds we sow. How are we influencing those around us? Do we influence them to turn to Jesus or are we influencing them to turn away from Him? We are here for you! 130. How Do we Bloom Spiritually? How do we grow spiritually? What is spiritual growth? Let's start by asking are we growing or are we dormant? We find the answers in scripture. Take some time to read Psalm 1 - and see how we are to be like a tree bearing fresh fruit. The Word is what nourishes us and causes us to bloom spiritually. The fruit of the Spirit are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Are these fruits blooming in your life? Are some blooming more than others? Take time to till your soil, weed your garden, and do the work to ensure a healthy season of blooming. What are some weeds that need to be removed? They could include pride, self-sufficiency, disobedience, doubt, unbelief, bitterness, and so many others. We are here for you! 128. Speak Lord, I am Ready to Listen - We want the Lord to speak to us, we are ready to hear. There are those times when we can't hear a peep. What stops us from hearing from God? Are we too distracted, too busy, or anticipating how we think we will hear from Him? Maybe we need to create margin - blank space - that is reserved from Him. Maybe we need to sit in the quiet so we can hear Him whisper. Maybe we need to silence the enemy or turn down the world's volume, so we can hear what the Lord has to say. What is our posture? Obedience, correct posture, and purposeful silence sets us up to hear the Lord's voice. The more time we spend in His presence, the more often we will hear from Him. It may be in a song, in a phrase, in a sermon, in a conversation with a friend and then repeated in our devotion. So what are we to do? Get in the Word so we can know the Word and can discern truth from the lies of the enemy. Once we hear from Him, we have to be ready to adjust our life and walk in obedience with Him. He never calls us to do what we can accomplish in and of ourselves. This is how He gets the glory. We hear from God through communion, relationship, counsel and conviction. Believe He has something to say to you and expect to hear from Him. Rely on the Holy Spirit to be your helper and your teacher. Pray His Word and hear from Him. Ask Him to open your eyes to see, your ears to hear, and your heart to receive! We are here for you! 127. The Resume of a Leader - When we talk about leadership we are referring to being a servant leader. A servant leader is a growing leader led and grown by the Holy Spirit. In order to lead like Jesus, we are called to serve. We are to live by a different model than the world lives by. Servant Leadership Is about being like Jesus and leading like Him - not just showing up and going through the motion. It is about the posture of our heart. We are not to strive, we are to surrender our leadership to Him. A Godly leader is faithful and obedient no matter where they are serving. We are to shepherd our people. We accept and delegate responsibility. Shepherding requires caring for our people and doing what is best for the lot. We are to be a leader others can trust. 125. What Lies on the Other Side of Obedience? Goodness lies on the other side of obedience. Our disobedience has to be addressed. God's way is best. When we choose His way and walk in obedience to Him, we discover that what He has for us is better than anything we could choose for ourselves. Obedience brings freedom. It means you are no longer in bondage to striving. Obedience offers us His power. It opens the opportunity for Him to work through us. Obedience brings blessing and protection. Who is on the other side of our obedience? How does our obedience impact the lives of others? Who sees our obedience and is inspired, convicted, or encouraged by it? How will God use your obedience to touch the lives of others? Our obedience matters. It matters to us and the transformation that we are to be experiencing. It also matters to those who are around us. Our obedience inspires others to take that step in obedience. We are here for you! 123. Trust and Obey. Trust and obey for there's no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey. These lyrics to the old song in your church hymnal are so strong. Can you trust and not obey? Can you walk in obedience if you don't trust Him? These are good questions to ponder today. Know Him, love Him, trust Him and obey Him. These 4 elements are necessary if we are to walk in obedience to Him. We are to not merely say we do these things, but to actively practice these things. We need God's grace in order to layer each to these things together in order for us to walk in obedience to God's word. Where do we start? We spend time with Him - reading and studying His word. 123. Walking in Disobedience. Obedience is the practical acceptance of the authority and will of God. It is submitting to Him in our actions, words, and thoughts. It is to agree with God and be in a position of power in Christ. So that means that disobedience is simply not trusting that God knows what is best. Today, ask God to reveal your disobedience. Even doing the right thing for the wrong reason is disobedience. It is all about the motives of our heart. God knows, so get honest with Him. Today is a great day to choose obedience. We don't have to work on it or try to do it. We simply need to choose it. Anytime we falter, confession brings grace. Today is a great day to choose obedience. His way is always best. 122. Do I Have Enough Faith? The definition of genuine faith is abandoning all human reliance and self effort, placing total dependence upon God's character, His actions, and His promises. Faith is a gift from God. We can pray and ask God to help us have enough faith. Do we worry and fret or do we place our faith in God and rest on His promises? During the midst of every struggle and trial, we have a decision to make. Will we lean into the truth of God's word, lean into our relationship with Jesus, and lean in so close we can hear the promptings of the Holy Spirit? When we choose to abandon ourself and depend on God, we grow to know Him more which increases our faith. To increase our faith, spend time in the Word to know Him more. As our knowledge of Him grows, our belief in Him, His Word and His promises grows. As we know Him more, we learn to trust Him more. As we know Him more, grow our belief, and learn to trust Him more - our faith in Him grows. We are here for you! 121. Do You Feel Shame? Satan says "shame on you", but God says, "shame off you". Whatever it is that causes you to feel shame - something we did or something that happened to us - we can exchange our shame for God's peace. Shame started at the beginning with Adam and Eve. It's not new. But the good news is that as Daughters of the King, we can give God our shame, surrender it to Him, and trust Him to take care of it for us. Surrender is to be our new way of living! Surrender may require practice. You may have to continue to practice surrendering your shame and no longer living there. And whenever you start to feel that shame or Satan tries to remind you - remember that shame no longer belongs on you. Ask yourself, where is this from? It's not coming from God, so take those thoughts captive and carry them to God in prayer. **Biblical study - Psalm 25. We are here for you! 120. Are you Lonely? Loneliness has become a mental health crisis in the United States. We can google and find the world's recommendations of how to endure loneliness. But even better than that, we can look in God's word to see what the Lord instructs us to do when we find ourselves feeling lonely. Jesus is your best friend and you can interact with Him. Listen as we describe a way you can journal and have God speak into your personal situations proving that you are not alone. As promised, God is always with you and He is everything you need. We understand your pain as your friend group diminishes or as you find yourself an empty nester. But you do not have to be stuck in the struggle. Instead of focusing on your feeling of loneliness, fix your eyes on Jesus. He will carry you through and supply all of your needs according to His riches. Remember, the most important thing in our life is our relationship with Jesus. What can you do to grow your friendship into a deeply rooted, fully committed relationship with Him? 118. The Lies we Believe We are comfortable believing lies about ourselves, about our circumstances, and even about the health of our relationship with Jesus. Sometimes we are being deceived and sometimes we are deceiving ourselves. How do we stop believing the lies of the enemy and start making sure what we believe lines up with the truth of God's word? Ask the Holy Spirit to help you identity and define the lies. Ask yourself "who told you that?" Surrender the lie and replace it with the truth of God's word. Grab this download of this 3 step process HERE. Remember, the most important thing in our life is our relationship with Jesus. 117. There is No Greater Love - Merry Christmas, friends! It is a busy time of year, but we pray you will slow down enough and remember that there is no greater love than God's love for you. "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." (John 3:16) Christmas reminds us about a God who loves us so much He sent His Son to die on a cross for us. His birth is worthy of a celebration - especially now that we know that we know what it offers to us - Hope, reconciliation to God, hope of eternity with Him! He humbled Himself, He gave His life, and He glorified the Father. This is the example that we are to follow. We are to humble ourselves. We are to live our life as a living sacrifice to Him. We are to live a life that brings honor to our Father. May 2024 be the year our #1 goal is to look more and more like Christ. May we make Jesus the center of our life. May we point others to Him!
