A weekly podcast of news, tips, and tools for protecting your privacy against the Surveillance State. Be free; be an enemy of the surveillance state.
Be sure to subscribe so you get notified of new episodes! So, taking a break from the De-Googling theme this week, I have a special episode to share with you. I was a guest on the Ward Scott Files last week and Ward graciously gave me the OK to post the audio from that episode for all of you to hear. The video link (if you want to see it and check out his show) is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9TjVvWmu_0 Ward and I had a long-ranging (sounds better than “rambling”) conversation about the loss of privacy. I hope you enjoy listening in... ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Enemy of the [Surveillance] State is written, produced, and narrated by C. Everyone needs email — but unless you are a terrorist, mobster, drug lord, child molester, or the like — you don't need to be under surveillance. Google has made billions of dollars sharing your emails with “partners” who use their content to pump ads your way. Enough is enough! This week, I will share how you can create an email account that respects and protects your privacy. After this episode, you will be one step closer to kicking Google to the curb and taking back your privacy. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Enemy of the [Surveillance] State is written, produced, and narrated by C. Be sure to subscribe so you get notified of new episodes! As America becomes more and more divided along political lines, it is more important than ever to understand the history of tech companies using data on individuals to create startlingly accurate profiles. Case in point, the Nazi campaign of the Holocaust of the Jews in the buildup to and during WWII was made up of six phases — the identification of the Jews, the expulsion of the Jews from society, the confiscation of their assets, the ghettoization of the Jews, their deportation, and finally, their extermination. IBM — an American tech company — was intricately involved in all six phases. This episode will unpack that as much as one episode allows and I will show that Big Tech is up to the same tricks now. An invaluably important step to preventing the Surveillance State from continuing to gain the kind of power that could be used to play a repeat of the abuses of Nazi Germany is to fight political censorship in all its forms. Silencing the voices of those with whom we disagree is a dangerously slippery slope. I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend your right to say it. The alternative is too horrible to allow. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Enemy of the [Surveillance] State is written, produced, and narrated by C. In this episode I address a couple of things. First, I address a subtle and very positive change to something about this podcast (notes below). Second, I address the ways you can use the extra time with family and friends to help spread the message of privacy and liberty. Third, I cover the newest battle in the war on encryption and how we — the People — are winning. Part of that deals with reports that Signal’s encrypted text app service was “broken” by an Israeli tech firm and Signal’s response. Please read the important notes below. A special note from me about a change in the podcast is followed by links referenced in this episode.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Enemy of the [Surveillance] State is written, produced, and narrated by C. This show would not be possible without the support of you, the listeners, and I appreciate it.And as of this episode, I have made the decision to include affiliate links to some of the services and tools I recommend. These are not ads. These are things I have been recommending for some time now — some of those recommendations predate the show. The decision to begin including affiliate links is based on the simple fact that if I can increase the financial support of the show, I can devote more time to producing more and more quality episodes for you. I have heard from many of you that you have taken my recommendations and would have gladly used an an affiliate link, so I am making that option available to you.My promise to you is to NEVER base my recommendations on whether or not I can offer an affiliate link; I will continue to base recommendations on the value of the service or tool, whether or not an affiliate program is available. Period. If you are interested in any of those recommendations and want to support the show in a small way, use the affiliate links I provide, If not, just search for the tool or service and go there directly. I will always make it clear if I include an affiliate link; My relationship to YOU, the listener is important to me — I will NEVER sacrifice that.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Looking for either a great computer or phone that respects and protects your privacy? After the first segment of Messing With The Scammers, I received lots of positive feedback for listeners who enjoyed that segment. That time, I did it as part of a full episode; This segment is its own episode. I hope you enjoy it.The premise of this segment is taken from the sit-com, BJ and the Bear — from the late '70's / early '80's. The scammer that called me never figured out that I was basing our conversation off of a TV show — even when I said something about "every episode!" I quot the most ridiculous parts of the theme song, just for fun. I finally had to get pulled over by Sheriff Lobo, just to end the call! Lots of fun.In the next few days, I'll be rolling out a full episode — updating some of what is going on in the war on encryption. This week, my special guest is Adam Craig, LFCE (Linux Foundation Certified Systems Engineer). Adam manages a room of Linux servers for an unnamed major university and was my master/tutor/guru (and still is, to some degree) when I made the switch to Linux several years ago. We discuss the Linux Operating System — what it is, how to get it, why it is better than either Windows or Mac for privacy and security, and why you should consider switching to Linux from your current Operating System. I do not personally know anyone more knowledgeable about Linux than Adam. It was a great joy to have him on the show to discuss an Operating System that respects privacy and liberty. This week, my special guest is Henry from the popular and established privacy community, TechLore. We discuss the philosophy, mechanics, and logistics of working to spread the message of privacy as it relates to liberty. We cover a wide range of topics and ideas, so buckle in and take a ride with Mitch and Henry as we get into the nitty gritty of privacy in an age of mass digital surveillance. This is your chance to be a fly on the wall while two privacy nerds discuss the good, the bad, and the ugly of what works, what doesn’t, and why. I owe all of you an explanation for why it has been a month since the last episode. Please give this a listen.
This week, I have the Murray Hunter, author of Boris the BabyBot, a children's book about Big Data and Surveillance Capitalism. We discuss Surveillance Capitalism, and how to teach children about the Surveillance State in age appropriate ways. In this bonus episode, I discuss how to create, manage, and use strong passwords / passphrases to protect your privacy.Passwords need to be long and random, but that makes them difficult to memorize. This week, I am joined by a special guest, Todd Weaver who because of his dedication to privacy, started a company called Purism making computers and now a phone that respect and protect your privacy. We discuss mobile privacy, how to protect it, and more. I’ve been following Purism for years now, watching the company grow and keep promises of creating top-of-the-line devices that protect privacy. As an active advocate — and practical practitioner — of privacy, I have had to hack the heck out of my devices to make them privacy-friendly. Purism’s goal is to make privacy convenient. And they are doing it. If you are considering a new phone or laptop, be sure to put them on the list of companies you check out.FULL DISCLOSURE: I HAVE NO RELATIONSHIP AT ALL WITH PURISM. I WAS NOT COMPENSATED IN ANY WAY FOR RECOMMENDING THEM. I BELIEVE IN WHAT THEY ARE DOING AND RECOMMEND THEM BASED ON THAT. PRIVACY MATTERS AND PURISM KEEPS IT FRONT AND CENTER OF ALL THEY DO. www.puri.smEnemy of the [Surveillance] State is written, produced, and narrated by C. In this episode, I deal with the question you’ve all heard and some of you may have even asked: “Why should I care about mass digital surveillance, if I have nothing to hide?” The answer is simple — the question is wrong. The right question is: “What do you have that is worth protecting?” The episode covers data-mining and data analysis and how the aggregation of data can be used to create a startlingly accurate profile of you that knows you better than you may know yourself and can even be used to predict your future actions and choices. Sound clip one is from Ed Snowden’s 2014 interview with "NBC Nightly News" anchor and managing editor Brian Williams. Sound clip two is from Kansas City’s 41 Action News’ report, “Smartphone pictures pose privacy risks.” Enemy of the [Surveillance] State is written, produced, and narrated by C.
