How a $2,000 'Made in the USA' Phone Is Manufactured

Earlier this week we wrote an article called “A US-Made iPhone Is Pure Fantasy." The long and short of it is that Trump's dream of moving all high tech manufacturing to the US is extremely difficult because global supply chains are so intricate, manufacturing expertise exists primarily in China, Vietnam, Cambodia, and other countries, and the components that go into a phone are often made in other countries as well. But there is currently one smartphone that qualifies for a “Made in the USA” title from the FTC. It's the Liberty Phone, which is made by a company called Purism. The phone is a version of Purism's Librem 5. The Made-in-China Librem 5 costs $800, and the Liberty phone costs $2,000. It has 4 GB of memory, and reviewers say that its specs are pretty outdated. Not every single component in the Liberty Phone is made in the USA, but the company has been trying very hard to make it as American-made as possible. The fact that it exists at all is kind of a miracle, and the way that Purism is approaching manufacturing is really interesting, so I called Purism's founder, Todd Weaver, to talk about smartphone supply chains, making tech products in the United States, and tariffs. CCPT Purism: The Paradox of Non-Directive but Highly Structured

In this episode of the CCPT Purism series, I unpack one of the most misunderstood truths about Child-Centered Play Therapy: that while it's non-directive, it is also deeply structured and intentional. I walk through the intentional ways structure shows up in CCPT—not as control over the child, but as a consistent framework that allows the child to feel safe enough to lead. From the playroom setup to our consistent language, tone, and limit-setting process, structure is what allows healing to happen. I also explore the internal framework that defines how we show up as therapists. Our regulation, neutrality, presence, and boundaries become a holding structure for the child's work. We don't just create structure—we become the structure. This episode is a challenge to re-examine how fully you've internalized the model and whether your structure is strong enough to give children the freedom they need. In this episode of the CCPT Purism series, I focus on Garry Landreth and the essential role he played in shaping modern Child-Centered Play Therapy. While Rogers, Axline, and the Guerneys laid the philosophical and practical groundwork, Landreth gave the model a clear identity—naming it, defining it, and defending it. I share how his unwavering commitment to purity of the model continues to shape the way we teach, train, and practice CCPT today. I also reflect on my personal CCPT lineage and how Landreth's influence shaped my journey, as well as yours. From founding the Center for Play Therapy at UNT to writing The Art of the Relationship, Landreth's contributions gave CCPT its structure, its language, and its staying power. This episode is a tribute to the legacy we all share—and a reminder to keep asking ourselves whether we are truly living the model with trust, presence, confidence in the model, and commitment to the relationship. CCPT Purism: How The Guerneys and Filial Therapy Extended the CCPT Model

In this episode of the CCPT Purism series, I explore the work of Bernard and Louise Guerney, who extended the principles of child-centered play therapy beyond the playroom through the development of filial therapy. Their innovation marked a major turning point in the model's evolution by shifting the role of the therapist from the primary change agent to a coach who empowers parents to support their children at home through non-directive play. I walk through how filial therapy remains fully adherent to CCPT while providing a framework for training parents in tracking, reflecting feelings, and setting therapeutic limits. The Guerneys' work laid the foundation for programs like CPRT, which combine CCPT principles with family engagement to dramatically improve outcomes. This episode is a call to remember our roots, honor the legacy of those who shaped this model, and stay grounded in the principles that make CCPT so powerful. Episode References: Guerney, B. G. In this episode of the CCPT Purism series, I take you through the foundational role of Virginia Axline in translating Carl Rogers' person-centered theory into what we now know as Child-Centered Play Therapy. Axline worked closely with Rogers and applied his concepts to children by introducing her Eight Principles of Non-Directive Play Therapy—a philosophy describing how we show up and relate to children in session, not a list of techniques or tools. I briefly walk through each of Axline's eight principles, highlight their connections to Rogers' core conditions, and explain how they continue to shape our model today. This episode is a reminder that CCPT isn't something we do—it's a way of being, requiring trust in the child, a release of control, and an unwavering presence. If you practice CCPT, you're not just using Axline's methods—you're carrying on her legacy. PlayTherapyNow.com is my HUB for everything I do! playtherapynow.com. In this episode, I continue the CCPT Purism series with a deep dive into the core tenets and core conditions of Child-Centered Play Therapy. I walk through Rogers' foundational ideas—including the tendency to actualize, self-concept, and the organismic valuing process—and explain how these principles shape our understanding of children and the healing power of the therapeutic relationship. I also break down the three core conditions Rogers identified as necessary for growth: unconditional positive regard, empathy, and congruence. These are not techniques to apply—they are ways of being that must be consistently present in our relationships with children. If we want to be CCPT therapists—not just practice CCPT—we have to embody these principles in everything we do. Finally, I challenge you to consider Rogers' tenets and conditions to reflect on where you are in your own CCPT journey and how to move closer to full alignment with the model. In this episode, I kick off a brand new series: CCPT Purism—a deep dive into what it truly means to be a pure Child-Centered Play Therapist. I've seen a growing trend where therapists think they are practicing CCPT, but in reality, they've drifted from full adherence to the model. This series is about going back to the foundations—understanding where CCPT came from, why it matters, and how to ensure we are practicing in full alignment with its core principles. We start by looking at Carl Rogers and his revolutionary shift from psychoanalytic and behavioral approaches to person-centered therapy. Rogers' belief in self-actualization, client autonomy, and the healing power of the therapeutic relationship paved the way for CCPT. I explore how these core ideas challenged traditional therapy and why our role is not to fix, direct, or control—but to provide a space where healing naturally unfolds. Episode References: Rogers, C. In Episode 103 of Bionic Planet, titled "Purists, Pragmatists, and the Science-Based Targets Initiative," we delve into the complex world of emission reduction targets and the challenges companies face to reach net zero emissions by 2050. The episode explores the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTI), a program designed to assist companies in setting emission reduction targets aligned to achieve net zero emissions. The episode begins by highlighting the significant increase in companies committing to SBTI since January 2023, with many not submitting their plans until January 2025. We learn about the distinction between purists and pragmatists in the climate realm. Purists advocate for the complete elimination of fossil fuels in value chains, while pragmatists emphasize the use of offsets to achieve emission reductions. Guest speaker Jen Jenkins, Chief Science Officer at Rubicon Carbon, provides valuable insights into the challenges faced by companies in reducing emissions and the balance between pragmatism and purity. Jenkins discusses the importance of understanding a company's value chain, the complexities of emission reduction strategies, and the role of offsets in achieving carbon neutrality. The episode delves into the debate surrounding the use of offsets in emission reduction strategies, focusing on the conflicting perspectives of purists and pragmatists. Jenkins emphasizes the need for flexibility and practicality in climate action, highlighting the importance of using the available tools to address the climate crisis effectively. As the discussion unfolds, the episode touches on the need for clear guidelines and standards in emission reduction efforts, the role of the voluntary carbon market in conservation efforts, and the challenges of balancing purity with practicality in climate action. Jenkins and the host explore the complexities of achieving net zero emissions and the importance of finding a middle ground between purist ideals and pragmatic solutions. The episode concludes with a call to action for companies to engage in emission reduction efforts, highlighting the significance of the voluntary carbon market in driving climate action. But how? Technology? Geoengineering? Are we doomed to live on a bionic planet, or is nature herself the answer?" - (00:04:50-00:05:00) "The purists have just been better at communicating. Because pragmatism is about probabilities, uncertainties. Science itself is not about absolutes. It's about finding the concurrent views of most experts." - (00:36:34-00:36:45) "We kind of need to use the tools we have, we need to address the problem with what we've got at hand. And I think that's a very pragmatic look at the problem." - (00:37:56-00:38:06) "If you do take a purist view, especially in an environment in a market that is voluntary, you're not going to get the action you need." - (00:38:16-00:38:27) "The atmosphere is well mixed, we need to reduce emissions globally." - (00:30:58-00:31:09) "The voluntary carbon market right now in the near term is a fantastic way to help conserve those existing forests so that we retain both their carbon stocks and the important biodiversity." - (00:32:07-00:32:17) "The U.S. government earlier this week made a strong show of support for the voluntary carbon market." - (00:34:30-00:34:40) "We all want to get there. We're all motivated to get to net zero. But a pragmatic approach would say, look, if you're in an industry where the next least costly abatement action is going to cost you more than it would cost to purchase an offset, then you should go ahead and buy the offset." - (00:30:05-00:30:15) "We need to reduce emissions globally. The purest approach would say, no, no, I need to hold everybody's feet to the fire and ensure that no matter how much it costs, ensure that these companies sort of suss out every single source of fossil fuel in their value chain and obliterate it immediately." - (00:31:20-00:31:33)

You may not know it, but our world has already been basically taken over by free and open source software, or FOSS - specifically, the Linux operating system. Just about every single electronic appliance or device today, from your smartphone to your smart toaster, is running some flavor of the Linux operating system. Furthermore, open source software projects are the bedrock of many for-profit software applications, operating systems, mobile apps and web apps. It's everywhere, and yet you probably know very little about it. Today, Sean O'Brien will give us a little FOSS history lesson, explain why supporting this movement is so important, and even tell us how we might replace some pricey and user-hostile popular software with top-notch free and open alternatives. Sean O'Brien is a lecturer in Cybersecurity at Yale Law School and Chief Security Officer at Panquake.com  He is a Visiting Fellow at the Information Society Project at Yale Law School, where he founded and leads the Privacy Lab initiative.  He has been involved in Free and Open-Source Software (FOSS) for approximately two decades, including volunteer work for the Free Software Foundation and FreedomBox Foundation. On this episode of This Week in Linux, we've got a lot of exciting news and even some "is this really happening?" news. First of all, the Beta for Fedora 33 with Btrfs is out now for testing. OBS Studio has released version 26.0 and there is so much awesome stuff in this release . . . I just love this application! We've also got a couple updates for some topics from previous episodes, KWinFT Project has hit Beta and Thunderbird has a new release that allows for direct upgrades. Unity Technologies has announced something they are calling 'Open Projects' which is an Open Source Game Development campaign that is very interesting! We've got a LOT of App Releases to talk about this week with the Geary (Email Client) 3.38, Virt Manager 3.0, and two new applications that are quite interesting which are Cabin: a tool to create simple apps for Linux with natural language programming, and an app that helps you find duplicates, big files, empty folders, etc called Czkawka. And in the "is this really happening" segment . . . apparently Purism has decided to create their own Cellular Service for a phone that still doesn't exist.
