In this episode, Dr. Emily Deans discusses the field of evolutionary psychiatry and its connection to mental health. Dr. Deans is a board certified psychiatrist and writes the blog Evolutionary Psychiatry, based on the observation that our brains are healthiest when we embrace a diet and lifestyle reflecting the conditions under which we humans evolved.  Dr. Deans has presented at the Ancestral Health Symposium in 2012 and 2018 on topics related to this theme. In this discussion, we dive into what some of the recent clinical studies are telling us about the connection between food and mood disorders conditions such as depression. In particular, she reviews studies showing anti-depressive effects of a Meditarrean diet with meat, and also omega-3 supplementation.  Dr. Deans emphasizes the importance of considering individual dietary needs and preferences when implementing diet interventions in psychiatric practice. She shares success stories of patients who have experienced improvements in mood through dietary changes, including ketogenic and low-carb diets. She also highlights the connection between glucose tolerance and violent behavior, and the importance of smoothing out blood sugar response by incorporating whole foods into the diet. Dr. Deans discusses the emerging recognition within the medical profession of food's impact on mental health. She shares her approach to helping patients reduce or come off psychiatric medications, emphasizing the importance of a multifactorial approach that includes diet, exercise, and psychotherapy. Dr. Deans also discusses the potential risks and benefits of dietary changes for individuals with eating disorders. Resources:* Blog:  Evolutionary Psychology, at Psychology Today: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/evolutionary-psychiatry* Studies:* Smiles Trial (Felice Jacka et al):  https://foodandmoodcentre.com.au/smiles-trial/* ISNPR position statement on nutrition and psychiatry: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4592666/* ISNPR guidelines on the use of omega 3 fatty acids in the treatment of major depressive disorder: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31480057/* Mediterranean diet and older adults and depression over time: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4454450/* Ketogenic diet and mood and anxiety disorders:https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10134254/* Microbiome and depression in mice (and cannabinoids!): https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-020-19931-2Here is a guide to topics discussed in this podcast episode:Time     Topic01:30      Introduction to Evolutionary Psychiatry and Nutritional Psychology04:32      Dr. Deans' interest in the connection between diet and mental health08:00      The evidence from observational and randomized controlled studies12:00      Felice Jacka's Smiles trial:  Adding meat to diet reduced depression19:03      Effects of single nutrients on mental health20:10      Anti-depressive benefits of omega-3 fatty acids22:22      Mental health in pre-modern populations26:43      Impact of sugar and processed carbohydrates on mood28:22      Physiological mechanisms: inflammation and mitochondrial dysfunction34:37      Using diet as a tool in clinical psychiatric practice43:20      Success stories: dietary reversal of psychosis and bipolar disorder49:12      Ketogenic and "Slow-Carb" diets for control of anxiety and panic attacks51:05      Violent behavior and poor glucose tolerance53:00      The bidirectional relationship between physical and mental health53:33      Medical profession's belated acceptance of the food-mood connection55:58      Helping patients reduce or come off of psychiatric medications58:07      Successes in reducing or stopping medications58:28      Dietary changes and eating disorders1:01:10   Current work and future plans Get full access to Ancestral Health Today Substack at ancestralhealth.substack.com/subscribe

What do we do when are in conflict with our moral ethics? Pastor Chris explores the concept of moral injury and shares Rita Nakashima's writing and teachings on this idea. He provides a few suggestions for a path forward when we are in need of soul repair. Scripture References 1 Corinthians 8:7-107 But this knowledge is not in everyone. Up until now, some have been so familiar with idols and what goes on in the temples that when they eat meat that has been offered first to some idol, their weak consciences are polluted. This is the issue. 8 Again, here's what we know: what we eat will not bring us closer to God—we gain nothing in feasting and lose nothing by fasting. 9 Now let me warn you: don't let your newfound liberty cause those who don't know this to fall face-first. 10 Let's say a person (someone who knows of Jesus) sees you eating in the temple of an idol; and because the person with a weaker conscience is still unsure of things, he becomes confident, follows your lead, and eats idol food.Romans 14:2Here's the issue: One person believes that nothing's off the menu; he'll eat any food put before him. But there's another believer—we'll call him the weaker—who eats only vegetables because the meat is tainted through contact with an idol. Hebrews 10:21-2521 Since we have a great High Priest who presides over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with true hearts full of faith, with hearts rinsed clean of any evil conscience, and with bodies cleansed with pure water. 23 Let us hold strong to the confession of our hope, never wavering, since the One who promised it to us is faithful. 24 Let us consider how to inspire each other to greater love and to righteous deeds, 25 not forgetting to gather as a community, as some have forgotten, but encouraging each other, especially as the day of His return approaches.Hebrews 13:18-1918-19 Pray for us, for we have no doubt that our consciences are clean and that we seek to live honestly in all things. But please pray for me that I may be restored to you even more quickly.

Teaching NotesWhat does the Bible Say About Life? Life begins before conception. “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”Jeremiah 1:5This is what the Lord says—your Redeemer, who formed you in the womb: I am the Lord, the Maker of all things, who stretches out the heavens, who spreads out the earth by myself.Isaiah 44:24 But when God, who set me apart from my mother's womb and called me by his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son in me so that I might preach him among the Gentiles, my immediate response was not to consult any human being.Galatians 1:15-16 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.Psalm 139:13-14 So how then should we live?Value all human life. Stand up for the voiceless. Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.Proverbs 31:8 What does the Bible Say About Death? Not our job! You shall not murder.Deuteronomy 5:17There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood…Proverbs 6:16-17 The Lord brings death and makes alive; he brings down to the grave and raises up.1 Samuel 2:6So how then should we live? Don't play God.Slavery and the Holocaust happened because one group of people decided another group of people weren't human.David Livingstone Smith Don't use abortion as a form of birth control. Adoption is an option. What does the Bible Say About Women's Rights?God highly values all women…so should we. So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them male and female he created them.Genesis 1:27 There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.Galatians 3:28So how then should we live? Men - let's step it up! Women – embrace your rights but don't take the rights away from your child at a chance of life. What does the Bible Say About Forgiveness? Available to all .If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.1 John 1:9Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” “No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”John 8:10-11This is what the Lord says: “Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool… “These are the ones I look on with favor: those who are humble and contrite in spirit, and who tremble at my word.Isaiah 66:1-2Here is a link to a podcast by Mikhaila Peterson who interviews 30-year-old British author, Louise Perry on her book The Case Against the Sexual Revolution. Currently, treatment options for these conditions include lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise, as well as various medications. However, not all treatments are effective for everyone, and some can have unwanted side effects.Recently, a new treatment option has emerged for diabetes and weight loss: semaglutide. In this podcast, we will delve into the science behind resistance training and explain why it can be a superior choice for those looking to shed pounds and improve their overall health. Kevindavishealth.com Learn more by going in depth through our book-" Young and Strong @ 40 & Beyond" or through our one-on-one health coaching services. Here's the link for our book-https://www.amazon.com/Young-Strong-at-40-Beyond/dp/1733094849/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3KTH9NSDNKOTP&keywords=young+and+strong+at+40+and+beyond&qid=1643670297&sprefix=young+and+strong+at+40+and+beyond%2Caps%2C111&sr=8-1 Here's a link to our Health and Wellness Planner-https://www.amazon.com/dp/1733094857/ref=sr_1_2?crid=IKRBN9YX8FHC&keywords=health+and+wellness+planner+kevin+davis&qid=1673001851&sprefix=health+and+wellness+planner+kevin+davis%2Caps%2C86&sr=8-2Here's the link for our coaching- https://p.bttr.to/3f5A822

Wishing You a Great 2023Others might begin the new year with resolutions, but we prefer excuses. Last year, we wrote only 42 editions. There was much to do in the remaining ten weeks. There was the Football World Cup, a few time-offs, a couple of vacations, and of course, a lapdog ate our laptops. If these honourable reasons weren't enough, we add another: we wrote a book! Our book Missing in Action: Why You Should Care About Public Policy will be published on 23 January 2023. Like this newsletter, it is a 'pop' public policy book in which we explain concepts through stories rooted in the Indian context. We couldn't have asked for a more helpful and encouraging team than our friends at Penguin India, who got us over the line and in time for a Republic Day release. The book is ready for pre-order now. You will have to excuse us for a bit of promotion that we will do over the next month or so on these pages. So what's the book about? At the heart of the book is our belief in the core objective of public policy. It should increase the welfare of the citizens. Like the verse from Bhagavad Gita goes:अनन्याश्चिन्तयन्तो मां ये जनाः पर्युपासते।तेषां नित्याभियुक्तानां योगक्षेमं वहाम्यहम्।।9.22।।That word - Yogakshema - to preserve the prosperity and welfare of citizens is what public policy should be about. We write this newsletter with the hope that it will, in its small way, move the needle on discourse. The book is a logical extension of this hope. Hope, as Andy Dufresne taught us, ‘is a good thing; maybe the best of things'. We are hopeful about the future of India, but not in a misguided nationalistic way. We believe we can make an impact, however small, on the demand side of the policy equation. That making people aware of policy choices and helping them anticipate the unintended will lead to a change in the supply side of politics. There are two preconditions for this to happen, which we assume hold true. One, people have time and mental space available for discussions that matter to their lives. Two, a belief we can arrive at what's good for us through those debates and discussions. In the book, we have taken the citizens as the point of reference and elaborated on their interactions with the state, the market and the society. Think of the book as a primer to understanding the fundamentals that underpin these interactions. We cover why we need a state or the markets, what is the role of society and how the three interplay among them. We go back to the foundational texts on political philosophy and economy in the book to explain the core concepts of public policy but in what we hope is an accessible fashion. We have tried to avoid jargon and approached all topics using first principles. Like the 16th century Bhakti poet, Nabha Dasa, who compiled the life of every saint from time immemorial in Bhaktamala, wrote:"Jaat na puchhie saadhu ki, poochh leejie gyan, mol karo kirpan ka, padi rahne do mian" ("Do not ask for the antecedents of a learned saint. Only seek their wisdom. The true worth is what's within us and not what you see from outside.")We have been ecumenical in our approach in this book. The other thing you might find interesting in the book is our focus on finding examples in the Indian context to illuminate a point or to make a case for our arguments. This will contextualise a lot of the discussions in the book to our immediate environment, and we hope it will make our reasoning clearer to our readers. Further, we have tried to keep ourselves free of dogma in the book. We have strong faith in markets, but we understand their limitations and the critical role of the state and society. We have been open to knowledge from all sources and have challenged our premises and priors before stating our point of view. Lastly, the tone of the book is conversational, and it is filled with some of our usual groan-inducing Bollywood references. Special thanks to all of you for reading us and engaging with us. Without your encouragement, we wouldn't have attempted a book. And now that we have said such good things go buy the book! Truth be told, we are a tad nervous about how the book will be received. We hope you will enjoy reading it and recommending it to others. Show it some love, friends and order it now. ThanksPranay & RSJIndia Policy Watch: How Did I Do On My Predictions For 2022?— RSJ Each year I start with a prediction post. But before I get down to my predictions for 2023 (which I will in the next edition), there's the unfinished business of how I fared on the predictions that I made in 2022. So, here's a look back at the year through the lens of my predictions at the start of the year.Economy - Prediction #1 This is what I wrote:“we will be in the 5-5.5 per cent growth range (if you take the base of FY 21). Inflation (CPI) will be around 5 per cent with an occasional jump to 6 per cent during the year despite threatening to go out of control. Maybe three interest rate hikes (a total of 75 bps) during the year will keep a lid on it. Public markets will moderate a bit (around 10 percent upside).... China won't attract it (foreign capital) as it will continue to go down the path of self-reliance and its notion of an equal society.”Result: No one could see the Ukraine war coming back when I made the predictions. Notwithstanding that, I think I got the growth and the inflation prediction in the ballpark. The war threw the interest hike prediction off totally. Instead of a 75 bps hike over the year, we got a 225 bps increase. I think, on balance, the Indian economy did quite well in 2022, given the headwinds. Domestic consumption was strong; we weathered the peaking of oil and commodity rates quite well, the twin balance sheet problem is now behind us, and by the end of the year, we saw private Capex growing. Not a bad state of affairs. I would have taken this happily at the start of the year. Overall, I'd give a 6/10 on this prediction.Economy - Prediction #2“There won't be much to write about reforms. Some attempts at piecemeal MSP reforms will be attempted to make up for the repealed farm laws. The National Monetisation Pipeline will get going but the progress will be modest. A couple of more disinvestment proposals of PSUs (including banks) will be taken up. But this will be for raising revenues rather than a planned strategy to make PSUs market competitive. The LIC IPO will just go over the line and that will be the big event to showcase reforms.”Result: Got that pretty much spot on. Maybe an 8/10.Politics - Prediction #1 & 2Here's what I wrote:“BJP election machine will continue its winning run barring the odd defeats in Punjab and Goa. The big prize, UP, will be fought hard but BJP will win a safe majority. The bahujan vote of the depleted BSP will shift to it more than to SP and that will make all the difference.”“There will be a split in the Congress. The party in its current form is untenable and beyond a point, there will be nothing to lose for those who split it. The key question is who will lead it - those who have a political base and think Congress leadership is a liability that cannot be carried along any further, or those without a political base but with strong ideological opposition to the BJP. My guess is it will be the latter. In any case, it won't make much of a difference.”Result: Punjab went the way I had guessed. Goa was close. Congress didn't split but it lost senior leaders like Capt. Amarinder Singh and Ghulam Nabi Azad among others. And despite the Bharat Jodo Yatra, which has only been in the news because people cannot believe Rahul Gandhi has sustained it for so long, I don't think Congress improved its election prospects dramatically this year.Society - Prediction #1“Expect love jihad and anti-conversion laws in various states, some kind of population control bill, a revival of CAA and a push for a uniform civil code during the year. There's that early 20th century Europe playbook of stoking demographic anxiety that plays on a threat to the survival of a civilisation or a way of living. The pitch will be queered on this. Indian society is a fertile ground for it. This land can be shown to its people as a palimpsest. But it can, perhaps more easily, be shown as a glorious, ancient civilisation that's been asphyxiated for centuries by ‘outsiders'. A true revival of it requires setting the past records straight and the right demographic arithmetic.”Result: Well, there was the usual noise around a lot of these issues but, thankfully, we had a somewhat muted year on legislating these. This didn't mean that the media mouthpieces and influential voices within and outside the government went slow on stirring the pot on these topics. We have reached a point where turning back on these issues will be difficult. It remains the one faultline that can derail our economic prospects that look surprisingly good at this moment. I will give myself a 7/10 as much as I want to score a zero here.   Society - Prediction #2“Politics is driven by the idea of having an enemy; the other. For much of the last decade, this was the left-liberal cabal (Lutyens, Khan market, NYT, Soros, Amnesty etc). Even when much of news and propaganda came to be dominated by the right-wing, there was a strawman of this all-powerful cabal of anti-nationals that was kept alive because the notion of an enemy is critical. But once you have decimated it, what do you do? You look for the enemy within.”Result: I will be the first to admit that I am still amazed at how this prediction isn't yet true. There are still imaginary left cabals to be fought against. It is a measure of both the enterprise of the propaganda machinery and the gullibility of ordinary voters that we are still drinking up all the kool-aid that we are being served on how anti-India interests are still the ‘establishment' in India and globally. There's still a long way to go before finding the enemy within your camp to fight. I will give a 5/10 on this. Miscellaneous - Prediction #1“There will be serious big tech regulations that will come into play in America. Others will follow suit. India will have a version of this along with dollops of atmanirbharta. This will mean some tough days for big consumer tech giants in India.”Result: Some big tech regulations have come into play in the US, and the collapse of FTX will lead to further clamping down. India came down heavily on Chinese apps and made life difficult for consumer-facing tech giants like Amazon, Meta and Alphabet. I expect this to continue. I guess a 7/10 on here will be about right. Miscellaneous - Prediction #2“China will struggle for growth. Demographics, debt and delusion have come together in China in a way that will make it difficult for it to sustain growth. China-Russia relationship will get stronger with their support for each other and for other authoritarian regimes around the world.”Result: Even without the Ukraine war, I thought this was how it was going to play out. It only became stronger with the war. I think I got a 9/10 there. Miscellaneous - Prediction #3“Meta, Crypto, Decentralisation, NFT (and everything else pumped up by the Valley tech bros) will see their hype abate (about 25-30 percent drop in asset value). When John Terry starts buying Bored Ape NFTs, you know the whole thing has jumped the shark. About time too.”Result: I should have followed my gut more and doubled down on this last year. I could sense a big correction, and a large-ish collapse was in the offing in this space. But I stopped short of calling a mini meltdown in this space. But that's how it turned out by the end of the year. An 8/10 here. So, there we are with how I fared on last year's predictions. I will come back next week with a few specific and somewhat contrarian predictions for 2023. Not(PolicyWTF): Making Education ProfitableThis section looks at surprisingly sane policies- Pranay KotasthaneThe University Grants Commission (UGC) released draft regulations earlier this week, permitting foreign universities to set up Indian campuses. While the draft needs some much-needed improvements, this reform is in the right direction. For the moment, keep the programmatic part of the policy aside. It's the politics of this move that caught my attention.Ritika Chopra in the Indian Express reminds us that the first such attempt was made in 1995. Another one in 2005-06 never made it past the cabinet. Then in 2010, the UPA government brought in another bill. The Foreign Educational Institutions (Regulation of Entry and Operations) Bill, 2010 was introduced in the Lok Sabha, a Standing Committee gave some suggestions, the government sat on it for three years, and it was tabled again in 2013. By 2014, the UPA was voted out, and the bill lapsed. It's interesting to observe how the Overton Window has changed on this issue. The 2010 bill was far less radical than the draft UGC regulations being proposed now. That bill disallowed foreign universities from repatriating any money abroad, it mandated that interested entities have a corpus fund of at least Rs 50 crores, and it allowed only entities that had operated for at least 20 years. Despite these unreasonable restrictions, the Left and the BJP still found the bill too permissive and buried it. The Left had a far greater influence on the matter as it was a part of the ruling coalition. I went back to check the best form of arguments put forward by the Left. True to form, they argued that this bill would encourage “commercialisation” of education. The CPM said it would open the ‘floodgates for weakening and dismantling the public education system in higher education. And India could be atmanirbhar in developing a higher education system; we need no help from anyone. Shouldn't we reflect on how much this ideological opposition cost us? What was the number of people who went ahead to get quality education in other countries, including in risky countries like Ukraine and Kazakhstan? Blocking foreign educational institutes for equity reasons is akin to banning people from eating Sushi just because India still has a large poor population. Forget the fact that a former General Secretary of the CPM is himself an alumnus of a British university. The BJP's objection predictably was that the courses offered could ‘adversely affect the sovereignty and integrity of India'. That insecurity hasn't subsided, and the new draft regulations have an explicit clause forbidding such courses. We can interpret the new draft regulations as an example of the Overton Window stretching on this issue. On some counts, it has extended the boundaries of freedom by allowing people to have more options within India while allowing foreign universities to repatriate money back home. It's a hesitant acknowledgement that profit-making in education is not bad. On the other hand, the Window has also stretched toward “lesser freedom” with clauses banning certain types of courses, effectively implying that non-controversial “technology” universities might receive preference over liberal arts universities. Real-life policymaking is often a search for the second-best option. So I'll take the door left ajar, rather than it remaining closed altogether.HomeWorkReading and listening recommendations on public policy matters* [Podcast] Some predictions for 2023 by the Puliyabaazi team* [Book] Optimally Irrational: Good Reasons Why We Behave The Way We Do is promising.* [Article] Many editions ago, we wrote about the EU ban on chargers, warning that it could come to India as well. Featured quotations from Emanuel Swedenborg's Secrets of Heaven:3324:4People who have no love for others cannot acknowledge the Lord, so they cannot acknowledge religious truth. If they claim to believe, they are being either superficial or hypocritical (2354). There is absolutely no faith without neighborly love (654, 1162, 1176, 2417).3325:3In the church, though, there are more people who are not regenerating than who are, and people who are not regenerating draw conclusions on the basis of appearances. So there was a controversy going back to ancient times about the relative priority of truth and goodness. The prevailing opinion among people who had not been reborn (and among people who had not been fully reborn) was that truth came first. They were not yet able to perceive what was good, and as long as we cannot perceive goodness, we live in shadows of ignorance on the subject. People who have been reborn, though, are actually immersed in goodness, which brings them understanding and wisdom, so they are able to discern what is good. They can also tell that what is good comes from the Lord, that it flows in by way of the inner self into the outer, that it flows in constantly, without any awareness on our part, that it links up with doctrinal truth in the memory, and consequently that goodness by its very nature is prior, even though it had not seemed so before.3412:2Here is the situation with deep truth that comes from the Divine and is wiped out by the people called Philistines: In the ancient church and after its time, “Philistines” referred to people who had little energy for learning how to live but a great deal of energy for learning theology. Eventually they even rejected life issues and acknowledged belief issues as the essence of the church, detaching them from life.

Elizabeth Suggs uses cosplay to Bookstagram and shows how reading doesn’t have to be so serious. You’ll probably hear in my voice how much I’m a fan of Elizabeth Suggs creativity and energy. She’s involved in a lot of pursuits, I can relate, and she’s an effervescent delight as she talks about her passion for inhabiting a character and encouraging people to read indie authors. We talk about impatience in learning some new type of creative task, and about feeling like we have to multi-task in order to be productive. We talk about video games, audiobooks, indie authors, book reviews, social media usage, and sitting with nothingness. She’s nerdy, she thinks we take reading too seriously, and just like she says, it’s a very good thing that she’s on the side of the good guys. Here are the links for what we talk about in the interview: Collective Humanity: https://www.ctpfiction.com/collective-humanityCollective Visions: https://www.ctpfiction.com/collective-visionsCollective Chaos: https://www.ctpfiction.com/collective-chaosHere is the book where Elizabeth cosplayed the cover: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/55581125-dhi-s-parables-of-divine-transformation?ac=1&from_search=true&qid=Ka1ZcDr3El&rank=2Here is her rendition of it: https://www.instagram.com/p/CND9XTKAgWb/Keep "In the Telling" commercial-free, and get exclusive access to full interviews on PatreonYou can help more people find “In the Telling” by leaving a review on Apple podcastsFind out more about “In the Telling” at lizzylizzyliz.comSubscribe to the Liz Christensen channel on YouTube for bonus content. The real meaning of possession should be clarified. 2Fear of possession is a perverted expression of the fear of the irresistible attraction of God. 3The truth is still that the attraction of God is irresistible at all levels, and the acceptance of this totally unavoidable truth is only a matter of time. 4But you should consider whether you want to wait, because you can return now, if you choose.2 Possession is a concept which has been subject to numerous distortions, some of which we will list below:3 Type 1: Possession can be associated with the body only. 2If this occurs, sex is particularly likely to be contaminated. 3Possession versus being possessed is apt to be seen as the male versus the female role. 4Since neither will be conceived of as satisfying alone, and both will be associated with fear, this interpretation is particularly vulnerable to psychosexual confusion.24 Type 2: From a rather similar reference point, possession can also be associated with things. 2This is essentially a shift from type 1 and is usually due to an underlying fear of associating possession with people. 3In this sense, it is an attempt to protect people from one’s possessiveness, like the superstition about “protecting the name” we mentioned before.35 Both type 1 and type 2 are likely to become compulsive for several reasons, including:a) 2They represent an attempt to escape from the real possession drive, which cannot be satisfied this way.b) 3They set up substitute goals, which are usually reasonably easy to attain.4c) 4They appear to be relatively harmless, and thus seem to allay fear. 5The fact that they usually interfere with good interpersonal relationships can be interpreted, in this culture, as a lack of sophistication on the part of the other (not the self), and this induces a false feeling of confidence in the solution. 6It is also fairly easy to find a partner who shares the illusion. 7Thus, we have any number of relationships which are actually established on the basis of type 1, and others which hold together primarily because of a joint interest in type 2.d) 8The manifestly external emphasis which both entail seems to be a safety device, and thus permits a false escape from much more basic inhibitions.5 9As a compromise solution, the illusion of interpersonal relating is preserved, along with the retention of lack of love. 10This kind of psychic juggling leaves the juggler with a feeling of emptiness, which in fact is perfectly justified, because he is acting from scarcity. 11He then becomes more and more driven in his behavior, to fill the emptiness.6 When these solutions have been invested with extreme belief, type 1 leads to sex crimes and type 2 to stealing. 2The kleptomaniac is a good example of the latter.7 Generally, three types of emotional disturbance result:a) 2The tendency to maintain the illusion that only the physical is real. 3This produces depression.b) 4The tendency to invest the physical with nonphysical properties. 5This is essentially magic and tends more toward anxiety-proneness.c) 6The tendency to vacillate from one to the other, which produces a corresponding vacillation between depression and anxiety.7All three result in self-imposed starvation.8 Type 3: Another type of distortion is seen in the fear of or desire for “spirit” possession. 2The term “spirit” is profoundly debased in this context, but it does entail a recognition that the body is not enough and investing it with magic will not work. 3This recognition accepts the fact that neither type 1 nor type 2 is sufficient, but precisely because it does not limit fear so narrowly, it is more likely to produce greater fear in its own right.9 Endowing the Spirit with human possessiveness is a more inclusive error than type 1 or type 2, and a step somewhat further away from the right mind. 2Projection is also more likely to occur, with vacillations between grandiosity and fear.6 3“Religion,” in a distorted sense, is also more likely to occur in this kind of error, because the idea of a “spirit” is introduced, though fallaciously, while it is excluded from type 1 and type 2. 4Witchcraft is thus particularly apt to be associated with type 3, because of the much greater investment in magic.10 It should be noted that type 1 involves only the body, and type 2 involves an attempt to associate things with human attributes. 2Type 3, on the other hand, is a more serious level confusion, because it endows the Spirit with evil attributes. 3This accounts both for the religious zeal of its proponents and the aversion (or fear) of its opponents. 4Both attitudes stem from the same false belief.11 This is not what the Bible means by “filled with the Holy Spirit.”7 2The concept of “speaking in many tongues” was originally an injunction to communicate to everyone in his own language, or at his own level. 3It hardly meant to speak in a way that nobody could understand.12 This strange error occurs when people do understand the need for universal communication, but have contaminated it with the possession fallacy. 2The fear engendered by this misperception leads to a conflicted state in which communication is attempted, but the fear is allayed by making the communication incomprehensible.8 3It could also be said that the fear induces selfishness or regression, because incomprehensible communication is hardly a worthy offering from one Son of God to another.13 Type 4: Knowledge can also be misinterpreted as a means of possession. 2Here, the content is not physical, and the underlying fallacy is more likely to be the confusion of mind and brain.9 3The attempt to unite nonphysical content with physical attributes is illustrated by statements like “the thirst for knowledge.” 4This is not what “thirst” in the Bible means.10 5The term was used only because of humanity’s limited comprehension and is probably better dropped.14 The fallacious use of knowledge can result in several errors, including:a) 2The idea that knowledge will make the individual more attractive to others. 3This is a possession fallacy.11b) 4The idea that knowledge will make the individual invulnerable. 5This is a reaction formation against the underlying fear of vulnerability.c) 6The idea that knowledge will make the individual worthy. 7This is largely pathetic.15 Like all of these fallacies, type 4 contains a denial mechanism, which swings into operation as the fear increases, thus canceling out the error temporarily but seriously impairing efficiency. 2For example, one person might claim she cannot read, while another might claim he cannot speak.1216 Note that depression is a real risk here, for a child of God should never reduce his efficiency in any way. 2The depression comes from a peculiar pseudo-solution which reads:3A child of God is efficient.4I am not efficient.5Therefore, I am not a child of God.136This leads to neurotic resignation, and this is a state which merely increases the depression.17 The corresponding denial mechanism for type 1 is physical inability, or impotence. 2The denial mechanism for type 2 is often bankruptcy. 3Collectors of things often drive themselves well beyond their financial means, in an attempt to force discontinuance. 4If this idea of cessation cannot be tolerated, a strange compromise involving both insatiable possessiveness and insatiable throwing away may result.18 An example is the inveterate or compulsive gambler, particularly the horse-racing addict. 2Here, the conflicted drive is displaced both from people and things, and is invested in animals. 3The implied derogation of people is the cause of the underlying extreme superstition of the horse-racing addict.14 4The alcoholic is in a similar position, except that his hostility is more inward than outward directed.15 5Defenses aimed at protecting (or retaining) error are particularly hard to undo, because they introduce second-order misperceptions which obscure the underlying errors still further.1619 The pseudo-corrective mechanism for type 3 is apt to be more varied because of the more inclusive nature of the error, which has already been mentioned. 2Some of the possibilities are listed below:a) 3One aspect of the possession/possessed conflict can be raised to predominance. 4If this is attempted in connection with possessing, it leads to the paranoid solution.17 5The underlying component of “being possessed” is retained in the “persecution” fantasies which generally accompany the paranoia.

EXODUS – Did It Happen? When? The next two lessons are critically important for everyday Christians to finally separate hype from truth and fantastic outlandish claims regarding the Exodus to see and learn of the real evidence that again shows the truth of the Bible and that it is God’s inspired word. Lesson 5 is in two parts.  In part 1 we will focus on real archaeology, real evidence, not patterns of evidence, or hints at evidence, about the Exodus.  There is no need for me to re-teach or re-present that which has already been researched and completed.  In this lesson you will learn about the Associates for Biblical Research (I will use ABR for the name of this ministry), a Christian ministry made up of Christian evangelical Bible historians and archaeologists.  Their website is https://biblearchaeology.org/This is a must “go to” internet resource for everyday Christians to learn about the veracity of the Bible – the Bible is true, credible, and can be depended upon from Genesis 1 to Revelation 22.  These proven Christian professional archaeologists have a mission to show via real archaeology the evidence of the truth of the inspired word of God, the Bible.  In addition these archaeologists using the truth that comes out of archaeology want to spread the gospel of the Kingdom to all.  There are stories of people who were agnostic or total unbelievers who came to be followers of Jesus Christ because of ABR and their awesome scholarly work in Biblical archeology. In this podcast, part 1 of lesson 5, I mentioned an amazing video TV series that is free to all on the website for the Associates for Biblical Research (ABR) called, “Digging for Truth.”  There are over 100 episodes from proving Daniel is a real prophet of the Lord and that he gave his accurate prophecies in the early 5th century B.C. to showing that the resurrection of Jesus is true.  Again and again as you watch these TV programs (most about 30 minutes in length) you will see all the crazy ideas and theories available on the internet are completely proven false. Here’s the link to the complete list of episodes for “Digging for Truth” – click here for all episodes of "Digging for Truth"The links below are to access the three-part series by Dr. Bryant Wood of ABR on the real archaeology that shows Israel was in Egypt; it shows the real probability they were there also just before the time of the Exodus in 1446 B.C.Video 1 - video part 1Video 2 - video part 2Video 3 - video part 3The links below here are for the two-part series by Dr. Scott Stripling of ABR on the archaeology, the real evidence of the date of the Exodus in the 15th century B.C. or 1446 B.C. 1st episode – video 12nd episode - video 2Here’s the link to the article at ABR that shows that Dr. David Rohl’s theory of his new Egypt chronology that is used as the ONLY proof of the date of the Exodus in the DVD video “Patterns of Evidence” is only a theory; it is highly criticized by Egyptologists, and creates more problems than it solves.  Dr. Rohl an agnostic tries to make up a theory to prove the date of the Exodus.  A theory that is unproven with any degree of completeness.  But, we are not interested in theories but real evidence of the Exodus.  Link – click hereRev. Well that escalated quickly. This episode is a weekly update for the week of March 16th. AND IT WAS A DOOZY! Every day, more and more about this virus comes out. Who's effected? What testing needs to be done? How can I protect myself? And what the hell is social distancing? It's all so confusing. The fact that things constantly are changing and we don't have an endpoint to this only adds to anxiety.I hear you. It's tough out there, friends. On this episode I discuss a weekly update. Speaker or Performer: Pr. Mark D. Lovett Scripture Passage(s): Matthew 5:1-12 Date of Delivery: November 2, 2014 In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit.“Seeing the crowds, He went up on the mountain, and when He sat down, His disciples came to Him. And He opened His mouth and taught them.” – Matthew 5:1-2Here in these verses is contained all the works and majesty and mercy of God.For what else has the Lord done except to look out upon the multitude of the earth; to see the throng of men, women and children striving after the wind? He sees that we are as sheep without a shepherd and lambs as to the slaughter. He sees that our works are as rags and our righteousness a fairytale wrapped up in morals we cannot keep and lies we tell ourselves that we might not be condemned for our transgressions. He looks upon the multitude of the earth and He has compassion. And His compassion leads Him up the mountain called Golgotha that He might gain the heart of wisdom for all men. For He who knew no sin learned obedience through what He suffered. And having gained the heart of wisdom and accomplished all that the Father had sent Him to accomplish, He ascended to the right hand of the power of God. And there He sat down. And here at His footstool His disciples gather; a numberless multitude from every nation and tribe, from every people and tongue gather here to hear the Teacher and to learn the wisdom of the Master. And He opens His mouth and teaches us.“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.“Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”When you look at an old run-down, gutted out, dilapidatedhouse on the wrong side of the tracks; whose windows are all broken and whose door is off the hinges; whose porch is falling and whose roof seems to be caving in, what do you see? Well, you see a run-down, gutted out, dilapidated smelly house whose windows are broken, and whose foundations and fixtures are collapsing. Somewhat hopeless and helpless. Better to tear it down and start over. In fact, better to tear it down and build a new house on the right side of the tracks with all the modern features and fixtures. But a builder who cares about the history of the house, who cares about the location and the neighborhood, a builder who spends his time fixing things and building things; he may see something different. He might see a house in need of care and love. He would see a house that can become a home for a family with children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren running and playing in it and all around it. He sees what the house was built to be; He sees what it will be when he’s done with it, because such a builder loves the house. He sees the house in all of its glory. And he sets to work.So our Lord sees you, His house; His temple. When we see it, it looks run-down and gutted out. Maintenance of the church has become a drain and the pews are emptier and the activities seem to be dwindling and petering out. We may see a dilapidated congregation whose foundations seem to be cracking and crumbling under the weight of yesterday’s memories. The fixtures are falling apart, beginning to show the wear and tear of the years. Not just the wear and tear of usage, the mechanical physical wear and tear on a building. But the wear and tear on souls tired from the burdens of this life of sin and shame. Wearied by the oppression of sin and the shame of past sins and temptations they cannot overcome. Laden with guilt at failed attempts at righteousness and imprisoned with the fear that someone will find out their thoughts and sins. Numbed by the countless years of doing the same thing over and over and over, never seeming to get better, never seeming to get it right; worried and concerned that they are doing it all wrong; worried about whether or not God has forsaken them or loves them still. Heavy laden with the demands of scribes and Pharisees that demand a hearing but do not help those they burden with their demands. We feel the wear and tear of friends offended; loved ones gone;deceased, moved away, or transferred out. The fixtures we call “youth groups” “LWML” “LLL” “Sunday school” even “fellowship,” they seem to be decaying before our very eyes. And no matter how badly we might want them to be strong and vibrant, shinny fixtures that are pleasing to the eye, they look weak and dull. We see a dilapidated little house that is only getting worse as it suffers the weather and fury of high winds and storms that beat against it, wearing it down. And sometimes we catch ourselves thinking that it would be better to tear it down and start over, o to move to a new house, than try to build it up and repair it. Better to go and build somewhere else than to try and salvage such a dilapidated house. But that is not what our Lord sees when He looks out on you. He doesn’t see a dilapidated failure; a weather-beaten, storm-tossed little house whose foundation is cracked and whose fixtures are falling apart, old and tarnished. He sees the multitude of the blessed. He sees His Father’s house. He is the builder and we are the house. He is the craftsman and we are the temple. And He is building us up into a spiritual house whose foundation is Christ Himself; a foundation that cannot crack. Whose walls and rafters are the apostles and prophets. He and His Father come and make us their home, their dwelling place; uniting us by the Spirit of God and joining us together in the sacred bond between the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, the bond of peace. And we are blessed for it.This is the kingdom of heaven, and we are the poor in spirit who are blessed to inherit it.Here you come mourning your sin and shame and the by-gone days of old, and here you are comforted by the promise of Jesus, “Your sins are forgiven” and “My kingdom is not of this world.” Here is the new heavens and the new earth whose King reigns in righteousness and purity forever. Here the righteousness of Christ satisfies your need for a clean conscience. Here we receive the divine mercy from our divine Friend and Brother who purifies our hearts so that wesee God. Here you are not called “sinner” and “God-hater,” here you are called sons of God for here the peace of God reigns by the blood of Jesus who is the peacemaker between God and man. When the Lord looks upon you, the multitude gathered here before Him, He sees the company of the blessed. For it is not just you that are here, but the whole company of heaven. The fixtures of the house of the Lord are not the meetings in her basement or the clubs she forms and outgrows. You are the fixtures. And your heavenly builder cares about you and your past and where you are and where you are going. So He sets to work. He forgives your sins and takes away your shame. He teaches you the righteousness of faith that clings to the obedience of the Son of Man as your obedience. He raises you up out of the grip of sin and death and gives you His Spirit so that you have the mind of Christ, rejecting the evil and choosing the good. He fills you with the joy of angels who rejoice with you at the salvation of our God and the Lamb. He sets to work building His house, His Father’s house. And in it He prepares a place for you so that when He is finished building He would come to you and take you to where He is, even as you are now where He is, as even now you are in the company of all saints.Rejoice, O congregation, for while you may well be reviled and rejected by many, hated, persecuted and maligned because of your devotion to Jesus, your reward is great. Indeed, here is your reward: eternal life in the Son of God.+ In Nomine Iesu +

April 6, 2014 Seize The Day John 12:1-10 1Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2Here a dinner was given in Jesus’ honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him. 3Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected, 5“Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year’s wages. ” 6He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it. 7 “Leave her alone,” Jesus replied. “It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial. 8You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.” 9Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there and came, not only because of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. 10So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well,
