What The World Is Saying Isn't Good Karel Cast 25-25 Last night, I watched BBC, SkyNews (UK), RTE (Ireland), France24 and NHKWorld as well as headlines from Latin America. What did I learn? It's much worse than we thought. Orangina is becoming very hated, quickly, and so are Americans. And what are THEY concerned with? Ukraine. Gaza. Tariffs. And the impetulant, disrespectful, downright criminal behavior of a “tyrant in training”. Never have I wanted to escape a country more; but options may be limited. They are ALL talking about ceasing US immigration to their countries. Meanwhile LAUSD (Los Angeles School District) at 800 schools says no phones. Either they turn them off, or they're locked up. The reaction? The kids and teachers like it. Who doesn't? Parents of course. Why? Fear of school shootings. Conflicted takes on… the Syrian Civil War. In the wake of the fall of Assad, with the Syrian Civil War over, at least for the moment, Conflicted is bringing you a bit of a retrospective. In the coming episodes, we'll be inviting Syrians and other people who experienced the conflict, from a multitude of different perspectives, onto the show to tell us about their experiences of the war. In doing so, we want to create a kind of narrative history as we make sense of this most complex of conflicts from as many angles as we can. In our first episode, we have an old friend of the show Wassim Nasr, a journalist for France24, who Conflicted Community members will remember from when we spoke to him about his incredible reporting from the Sahel Region of Africa. But Wassim's reporting on Syria is equally enlightening, with some of the greatest access you will see anywhere. He has been on the ground in Syria throughout the conflict, and was in fact one of the first Western journalists to meet with Ahmed Al-Sharaa, now the country's interim president, after Assad's fall. In this episode, we're setting up some crucial context for the Syrian Civil War through the surprising rise of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), providing a nuanced understanding of their evolution from an Al-Qaeda affiliate to a pragmatic political force that ultimately took control of the country. And then to top it all off, we'll hear all about Wassim's two meetings with Al-Sharaa… New Conflicted Season 5 episodes will be coming every two weeks, but if you want to have your Conflicted fix every single week, then you'll have to join our Conflicted Community. Subscribers will get bonus episodes every other week, and can also join our Conflicted Community chatroom, where you can interact with fellow dearest listeners, discuss episodes past and future, get exclusive messages from Thomas and Aimen, ask future Q&A questions and so much more. Flep24 is back with a new name—Flep24/7—after a long winter break marked by illness and despair…but French political news never stops. The patriarch of the National Rally is dead, it's the 10th anniversary of the Charlie Hebdo attacks, and the Socialist Party looks like it's going to betray the left wing alliance. We talk about Jean-Marie Le Pen's assiduously documented history of torture, debates on the left about Charlie, and debates on the left (and the Socialist Party) about collaborating with the new government. All that and more—and plenty more episodes to come in 2025 from Flep24/7. 2025- Ất Tỵ là năm kinh tế Trung Quốc gặp nhiều vận hạn, bị « hung thần Donald Trump chiếu tướng».
French prosecutors demand 20-year sentence for ex-husband in Pelicot mass rape case France24, By NEWS WIRES, on 25/11/2024https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20241125-court-moves-to-sentencing-in-french-mass-rape-trialThe case of Dominique Piqueux, currently on trial in France, has horrified the public with its sheer magnitude and depravity. Over a decade, Piqueux allegedly sedated his wife, Gisèle, enabling other men—whom he recruited online—to rape her while he documented the abuse through photos and videos. A total of 72 men reportedly responded to his invitations, with 50 facing trial alongside him. Gisèle bravely refused a closed trial, earning applause and support for shedding light on the widespread, systematic abuse. This trial has sparked a critical dialogue in France, particularly about the diverse profiles of the accused and whether they reflect broader societal tendencies. While some attribute abusive behavior to childhood trauma and psychological predispositions, others caution against using such explanations as justifications. The defense strategies employed—ranging from denial to claims of consent through the husband—highlight the disturbing complexity and persistent misconceptions about consent and rape. The case has also underscored the importance of societal education on these issues. In particular, it reveals how cultural understandings of consent, such as the need for explicit and enthusiastic agreement, may differ internationally. In France, as in other parts of the world, this trial may serve as a critical turning point in how rape and systemic abuse are understood, addressed, and prosecuted. Advocates hope it will inspire better rape laws and a more profound societal reckoning with these crimes. The Non-Prophets, Episode 23.50.4 featuring Infidel 64, Cindy Plaza, AJ and RobBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.

Ralph welcomes retired diplomat Ambassador Chas Freeman to discuss the United States' disregard for international law, the incoming Trump administration's approach to foreign policy, and the decline of the American Empire (among other topics).Ambassador Chas Freeman is a retired career diplomat who has negotiated on behalf of the United States with over 100 foreign governments in East and South Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, and both Western and Eastern Europe. Ambassador Freeman was previously a Senior Fellow at Brown University's Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs, and served as U.S. Assistant Secretary of Defense, U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia, acting Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, and Deputy Chief of Mission and Chargé d'Affaires in the American embassies at both Bangkok and Beijing. He was Director for Chinese Affairs at the U.S. Department of State from 1979-1981. He was the principal American interpreter during the late President Nixon's historic visit to China in 1972. In addition to Chinese, Ambassador Freeman speaks French and Spanish at the professional level and can converse in Arabic and several other languages. He concluded his thirty years in public service as Assistant Secretary of Defense, responsible for managing defense relations with all regions of the world except the countries of the former Soviet Union. Ambassador Freeman is the author of several well-received books on statecraft and diplomacy, including The Diplomat's Dictionary, America's Misadventures in the Middle East, and America's Continuing Misadventures in the Middle East.I think it's fair to say that our country led the drive for international law, a world order that was based on rules established by consensus and legitimized at the United Nations. But we have also led the drive away from the rule of law, both internationally and domestically. And I think the connection is contempt for procedural justice or due process.Chas FreemanThat whole area of international law—which was a stabilizing force in the world—has gone [when Trump removed us from the Intermediate Nuclear Forces Agreement in Europe.] And the UN Charter is disrespected—not just the US Constitution is—in its fundamentals. We invade the sovereignty of other countries with no serious regard for the legal prohibitions against that. And in fact, those legal prohibitions—which once were something that smaller countries could rely upon when they confronted the great powers—are no longer effective. Therefore, we see at the local level, the regional level, a proliferation of weapons designed to counter and defend against attack by greater powers. So the whole world is in effect arming itself. This is very good for arms manufacturers, but it's very bad for the prospects for our species.Chas FreemanThere are no realistic threats against the United States—except those that we are provoking. Our view seems to be that the best way to deal with the hornet's nest—I'm speaking of West Asia, the Middle East here—is to go and poke the hornets in their nest.Chas FreemanThe real risk now…is Israel has so much power in the US that it could create incidents which would flip the United States into a blazing barrage of empire expansion— and suppression in the United States domestically. And they have an incoming president who is ripe for that kind of manipulation to begin with.Ralph NaderIn Case You Haven't Heard with Francesco DeSantisNews 12/11/241. On December 4th, UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was assassinated in broad daylight in Midtown Manhattan. Clues indicated that the killing was political; most notably, the words “delay,” “deny” and “depose” were each written on one of the three bullets fired at the scene. As AP notes, “The messages mirror the phrase ‘delay, deny, defend,' which is commonly used by lawyers and critics about insurers that delay payments, deny claims and defend their actions.” Following nearly two full days of nescience, authorities turned up a suspect – Luigi Mangione, the Ivy League-educated scion of an established Baltimore family who had shown signs of increasingly erratic behavior in recent months, perhaps related to ever-worsening back pain. When Mangione was apprehended in an Altoona, Pennsylvania McDonald's, he was found with “a three-page handwritten document that indicated ‘motivation and mindset,'” the BBC reports, however authorities have not released this manifesto. Perhaps unsurprisingly, ABC 7 New York reports that Mangione's actions have unleashed a torrent of “‘volcanic' anger,” toward health insurance agencies, which many regard as capricious and cruel. It remains to be seen how this public sentiment will factor into what is sure to be a highly-publicized criminal trial.2. The reverberations of Mangione's actions are already being felt. Back in November, the American Society of Anesthesiologists issued a statement decrying Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield's unilateral declaration that it would refuse to “pay for anesthesia care if [a] surgery or procedure goes beyond an arbitrary time limit, regardless of how long the surgical procedure takes.” The ASA called on Anthem to reverse that proposal, but their pleas were ignored. That is until December 5th – just one day after the UnitedHealthcare shooting – when the company abruptly reversed themselves and even scrubbed the announcement of the policy from their website. Of course, Anthem insists that the outcry was based on “misinformation” and denies any correlation between the assassination and their decision, per NBC, but the timing frankly makes that difficult to believe.3. Another New York City killing also made the news last week: the trial of Daniel Penny, a former U.S. Marine on trial for strangling Jordan Neely to death in a New York subway car. Neely was an African-American street artist who had been experiencing homelessness. CNN reports Penny was found not guilty of criminally negligent homicide, already a lesser charge than the original second-degree manslaughter allegation, which Judge Maxwell Wiley dismissed Friday after jurors “twice told the court they could not come to a verdict on the count.” Neely's father, Andre Zachary, is quoted saying “I miss my son. My son didn't have to go through this. I didn't have to go through this either…What's going to happen to us now? I've had enough of this. The system is rigged.”4. Turning to the Middle East, the regime of Bashar al-Assad in Syria has fallen. Assad, with help from Russia, has clung to power since the country descended into civil war in 2011, beating back all manner of rival forces ranging from U.S.-backed rebels to left-wing Kurdish militias to ISIS. The faction that finally did wrest power from Assad is called Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham or HTS, which splintered from Al-Qaeda but is now engaging in a so-called “charm offensive” per France24, and promoting itself as a tolerant faction that will not subjugate women or oppress ethnic and religious minorities such as Syrian Christians, Druze, and Kurds. In a statement, the group told the Kurds of Aleppo “You have the right to live freely … Diversity is a strength of which we are proud…We denounce the actions of the Islamic State group against the Kurds, including the enslavement of women … We are with the Kurds to build the Syria of tomorrow.” ABC reports the U.S. will “recognize and support a new Syrian government that renounces terrorism, destroys chemical weapons stocks and protects the rights of minorities and women.” So far HTS seems to fit the bill. And if this all wasn't enough, the Syrian situation is further complicated by Israel using this moment to expand its foothold in the country. CNN reports Israel has “launched airstrikes at military targets across Syria and deployed ground troops both into and beyond a demilitarized buffer zone for the first time in 50 years,” setting the stage for a possible new front in Netanyahu's ongoing regional war.5. In Palestine, the Intercept reports five Palestinians in the West Bank, along with the councils of the three villages they hail from have filed “a formal regulatory complaint in Germany accusing the media giant Axel Springer of contributing to human rights abuses in Palestine.” Specifically, the complaint concerns Yad2, a classified ads platform and subsidiary of Axel Springer that has been compared to Craigslist, which the plaintiffs allege enables illegal settlements. According to the complaint filed by Jerusalem Legal Aid and Human Rights Centre, Yad2's facilitation of settler activity violates Germany's Supply Chain Due Diligence Act, which “requires German companies to identify and mitigate human rights risks within their global supply chains, including in subsidiaries which they control.”6. In more Israel/Palestine news, the student body at Yale has “overwhelmingly,” passed three pro-Palestine referenda, including two demanding that the university “disclose and divest from its holdings in military weapons manufacturers, ‘including those arming Israel,'” per Yale Daily News. These measures passed with around 80% of the vote. Han Pimental-Hayes, an organizer with the pro-Palestine Sumud Coalition, is quoted saying “University leaders have long tried to paint pro-Palestine and pro-divestment students as a fringe minority. The results of this referendum demonstrate that in reality, the movement for a free Palestine and a more ethical endowment is overwhelmingly popular.” Yale Friends of Israel however expressed that they are “certain” Yale will not change its investment policy regarding Israel's weapons of war.7. Looking to Africa, Semafor reports that the incoming Trump White House appears set to recognize the breakaway state of Somaliland, spurred on by right-wing elements who wish to use the unrecognized country as a base for anti-China intelligence operations. This piece highlights that this move would rattle the governments of East Africa and draw the ire of the African Union, but Trump's China hawks see it as a critical element of countering Chinese influence in the region and particularly in Djibouti where the People's Liberation Army has set up one of its handful of foreign military bases. Even if Trump does not recognize Somaliland however, and instead hews to the traditional American “One Somalia” policy, Republicans are calling for Trump to take an approach akin to Taiwan – treating it as independent without formal recognition.8. Turning to domestic politics, POLITICO reports Democrats are staging a “mutiny” against the old guard who have monopolized power in the House. This report focuses on Rep. Jerry Nadler, 77, who will vacate his position as the top Democrat on Judiciary to clear the way for Jamie Raskin, Rep. Raul Grijalva, 76, who announced he would step down as the top Dem on the Natural Resources Committee, and David Scott of Georgia, 79, who is looking down the barrel at multiple challenges for his spot on the Agriculture Committee. Since this piece was published, another major challenge has emerged – NBC reports AOC is gunning for the top Democratic spot on the Oversight Committee. The POLITICO piece emphasizes Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries' approach of letting the challenges “speak for themselves,” as an indication that he will not fight this wave of challenges.9. Washington Post labor reporter Lauren Kaori Gurley reports the Teamsters are demanding Amazon agree to bargaining dates by December 15. In a statement, Teamsters President Sean O'Brien writes “The Teamsters are done asking nicely for Amazon to stop breaking the law. Amazon must commit to come to the table and bargain a Teamsters contract with its workers — or face the consequences of its inaction.” This gambit by the Teamsters comes just as the winter holiday gift deliveries are getting into full swing, maximizing the union's leverage. Moreover, the Teamster's Faustian bargain with the Trump administration may yield results for them, as the normally business friendly Republicans may be inclined to put the screws to Amazon on behalf of this particular union. Whatever the circumstances, the Amazon Teamsters deserve a contract and it is heartening that O'Brien is fighting for his members.10. In decidedly worse Trump news, the president-elect has announced former Missouri Republican Congressman Billy Long as his pick to lead the IRS. A story by the Lever sounds the alarm on how he might use the “non-profit killer” bill to pursue political vendettas against tax-exempt organizations he dislikes. This piece exposes Long's role in trying to pressure the IRS to launch a probe into, of all things, the Humane Society following their support of a Missouri ballot measure strengthening dog breeder regulations. Put another way, if Long was ready to use the long-arm of the IRS to crack down on an organization whose sole political goal is the protection of animals, what might he do to organizations devoted to civil rights or social justice? This has been Francesco DeSantis, with In Case You Haven't Heard. Gisèle Pelicot waived her right to anonymity when her husband - and dozens of other men - were charged with raping and sexually assaulting her. Her decision allowed journalists to cover the trial in full and made her a feminist icon in France. This weekend, the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris will reopen, five years after the devastating fire of 2019. As a frequent visitor over the years, this magnificent building has always captivated me. One of my passions is creating field recordings, and I've captured numerous audio moments in and around the Notre-Dame. I've been gathering stories about some of these recordings, including one from my very first session in the cathedral back in 2007. With the Notre-Dame reopening this weekend, it felt like the perfect moment to share this story. Since I wasn't confident about recording the narration myself with the quality I wanted, I used an artificial voice from ElevenLabs for the spoken text. All the field recordings you'll hear are my own, with just a news clip coming from France24. Mark Farid, a visionary artist and researcher, discusses his provocative projects on digital privacy and surveillance. He shares his experience of giving away all his passwords for six months, aiming to live without a phone or computer, which led to social and financial isolation. Farid also describes "Poisonous Antidote," where he broadcasted all his online activities, revealing personal habits and validating his behavior. His latest project, "Invisible Voice," funded by the European Commission, aims to empower individuals by providing information on companies' environmental impacts, corporate accountability, and more, promoting collective action and influencing external narratives. In this episode, you will hear: Identity, performance, perception, and the self. The relationship between anonymity, privacy, and agency. Living life as a 23-year-old without a phone or computer. Data privacy and protection, and where the weak points are for you. The cultural changes happening day-to-day and how our technology usage keeps us connected. Solitude, loneliness, and being alone. Being known intimately and continually. The big and small ways to have accountability in our lives. The power of collective action. Mark Farid is an Artist, Researcher, and Lecturer in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London. He specializes in the intersection of the virtual and physical world, and the effect new technologies have on the individual and their sense of self. Farid's work embodies hacker ethics, such as a focus on privacy policies, use of surveillance technologies, and campaigning for data privacy and protection. His work forms a critique of social, legal, and political models. Farid graduated from Kingston University, London, with a First Class (Hons) degree in Fine Art (2014), and has since given talks and participated in group and solo exhibitions in England, France, Germany, Spain, Denmark, Finland, Slovenia, UAE, and Japan. He gave a TEDx talk in 2017 about his first two projects, “Data Shadow” (2015) and “Poisonous Antidote” (2016). Farid was selected for the Sundance Institute's 'New Frontier' Fellowship in Utah, USA (2016), for his ongoing VR project, “Seeing I”. "Seeing I" was piloted as a solo exhibition at Ars Electronica Digital Arts Festival (2019), and was selected for the European Media Artist Residency Exchange, as part of the Creative Cultures Programme of the European Union (2020/21). In 2022, Farid received European Commission Horizon 2020 research and innovation funding to develop his browser extension, "Invisible Voice”, which was later presented at the Pompidou Centre, FR (2022). In 2023-24, Farid received European Commission ST+ARTS funding to further develop "Invisible Voice" into a mobile phone app, a cross-device platform, and an interactive artwork. This will be exhibited at Ars Electronica Digital Arts Festival, AT (2024). Farid's projects have been covered by media outlets worldwide. He frequently engages in art and technology conversations appearing on Fox News, Sky News, France24, Arte, BBC Radio 4, BBC 5Live, Times Radio, The Telegraph, The Guardian.
După profitul net sub așteptări realizat în prima jumătate a acestui an, gigantul auto american Tesla amână data de lansare a câtorva dintre noile sale modele pentru prima jumătate a anului 2025, notează France24, care citează AFP.
We hear from Dr. Thaer Ahmad, a Palestinian American doctor who spent time in Gaza trying to administer to a civilian population under relentless siege. Plus, Constitutional scholar, Bruce Fein, takes apart the Supreme Court's decision to grant the president of the United States the powers of a king. Dr. Thaer Ahmad is a Palestinian-American emergency physician who has made numerous relief trips to Gaza. Dr. Ahmad is Assistant Program Director for the Emergency Medicine Residency Program at Chicago's Advocate Christ Medical Center. He also serves as the Global Health Director and Medical Ethics Director for the Emergency Department at Advocate Christ. Dr. Ahmad is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago and a board member for MedGlobal, a medical humanitarian NGO that works at building healthcare capacity and reducing health inequities globally.I don't think [Palestinian healthcare workers] get enough credit for what they've had to deal with over these last several months… These doctors are also displaced. Their families are displaced. They are living out of tents and they are showing up every day at the hospital to treat the community that's there. They've not been paid—the health ministry collapsed—they have no money. They're totally dependent on the scarce aid that gets in. These doctors are showing up to work when they should be in line at the bakeries that are producing some of the bread—where they should be in line collecting some of the aid that's being distributed. But they're showing up.Dr. Thaer AhmadI work with MedGlobal. They're doing fantastic work on the ground. They're in Gaza—more than 110 physicians and nurses who are Gazans are running medical points throughout the Gaza Strip. They have a malnutrition center that they're also using to help with the starvation that we were talking about. So I think that that's an excellent organization to contribute to—medglobal.org .Dr. Thaer AhmadBruce Fein is a Constitutional scholar and an expert on international law. Mr. Fein was Associate Deputy Attorney General under Ronald Reagan and he is the author of Constitutional Peril: The Life and Death Struggle for Our Constitution and Democracy, and American Empire: Before the Fall.[On Trump v. United States]: The court gave nothing more than the equivalent of, “We know when it's not immune when we see it, but otherwise you try to guess what that's going to be.”Bruce FeinIt's a judicial counter-revolution. It's a violation because it basically turns the Constitution into a scrap of paper—it means whatever the Justices want it to mean. It doesn't have to find even a single word in the Constitution to justify the opinion.Bruce FeinIt's really a judicial coup d'etat that occurred on July 1, 2024. It's hard to fathom the belief that these six judges think they're going to get away with it. There is going to be all kinds of damage to all kinds of people—regardless of their political labels—and there's going to be a big pushback. Do they think they're going to get away with it? These unelected, lifetime-position judges?Ralph NaderNews 7/10/24 In Case You Haven't Heard with Francesco DeSantis1. Haaretz reports that in the immediate wake of the October 7th attack, the Israeli Defense Forces implemented the ominously named “Hannibal directive” which “directs the use of force to prevent soldiers being taken into captivity.” In other words, the explicit order of the Israeli military was for Israelis to kill Israeli soldiers to prevent them from being taken hostage by Hamas, in order to deny the group leverage in negotiations. As Haaretz reports, this directive also put civilian lives at risk. The Hannibal Directive had been a secretive but official Israeli policy since the 1986 capture of three soldiers by Hezbollah in Lebanon, but was formally revoked in 2016. 2. Lancet, the prestigious British medical journal, has published a study estimating that as many as 186,000 people have been killed in Gaza as a direct or indirect result of the genocidal Israeli military campaign. This casualty count, far higher than the commonly cited figure of under 40,000, supports estimates offered by advocates. If accurate, this would mean Israel has wiped out nearly 8% of the total population of the Gaza Strip. 3. Due to previous legal entanglements, the United Autoworkers union is subject to a consent decree with the federal government. Included within this consent decree is a federal monitor assigned to the union. Yet, the Detroit News reports that this monitor, Neil Barofsky, went far beyond his mandate to pressure the union over its position on the crisis in Gaza. According to this report, following UAW's official call for ceasefire, Barofsky called UAW president Shawn Fain to share his “concerns” about the union's position. Later, Barofsky signed off on an email which included an ADL complaint about the union's call for a ceasefire. Benjamin Dictor, outside counsel for the UAW, wrote to Barofsky saying “Your call to President Fain on an issue so blatantly outside of the Monitor's jurisdiction was inappropriate…[and] represents a surprising lack of integrity.” 4. More misbehavior from the ADL is on display in a recent expose from the Guardian. According to this report, based on a leaked internal memo from 2020, “the ADL collected information on a Black Indianapolis activist, Tatjana Rebelle, who worked on Deadly Exchange, a national campaign against an ADL-backed program to send US police officials for training with the Israeli military.” Rebelle is quoted in this piece saying “It scared the s**t out of me…It stopped me from moving forward because I don't want to put people in my life at risk – I work with youth, so it stopped me in my tracks.” The ADL calls itself the “leading anti-hate organization in the world,” with a straight face. 5. AP reports Boeing has taken the deal offered by the Department of Justice, and will “will plead guilty to a criminal fraud charge stemming from two crashes of 737 Max jetliners that killed 346 people.” The plea deal, which must still be approved by a federal judge, dictates that Boeing must pay an additional $243.6 million fine and submit to independent monitor-ship for three years, among other provisions. Ike Riffel, whose sons Melvin and Bennett died in the Ethiopian Airlines crash, is quoted saying “Boeing has paid fines many a time…When people start going to prison, that's when you are going to see a change.” 6. President Biden shows no intention of stepping aside as the Democratic nominee. This is despite open calls from prominent Democratic lawmakers, such as Jerrold Nadler and Adam Schiff, as well as a full-blown revolt from major Democratic donors like Abigail Disney. Recent polls show Biden losing most swing states by a substantial margin, including an AARP poll in Wisconsin showing him running 12 points behind Democratic Senator Tammy Baldwin. Infuriating many of those who wish to avoid a second Trump term, Axios reports “President Biden indicated…[in his interview with George Stephanopolous] that he would be at peace if he lost to former President Trump ‘as long as I gave it my all.'” 7. Hurricane Beryl is ravaging Texas, leaving millions without power, according to CNN. This widespread power outage will only compound an incoming heatwave, with the Houston heat index reaching 100 degrees on Tuesday. Las Vegas hit a record high temperature of 120 degrees the same day, per Fox 5. As many have remarked, this is likely to be the coldest summer for the rest of our lives. 8. The Daily Beast reports the Pope has excommunicated Carlo Maria Vigano, an ultra-conservative archbishop who served as the Vatican's ecclesiastical diplomat to Washington from 2011 to 2016. A long time opponent of Pope Francis, Vigano has become increasingly unhinged in his criticisms, including accusing the supreme pontiff of being a “servant of Satan.” Other wild claims he has made in recent years include retweeting a Marjorie Taylor Greene post stating that “The Covid vaccines are killing people,” and calling Black Lives Matter protests the machinations of “the children of darkness.” Vigano was accused of schism and found guilty. 9. In the United Kingdom, the New Arab reports five pro-Gaza independent candidates won seats in the House of Commons, including Shockat Adam, who defeated shadow Cabinet minister Jonathan Ashworth. Most prominent of these however is Left-wing luminary and former Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, who successfully defended his seat in Islington North after being expelled from the Labour Party over his criticism of Israel. Reuters reports that upon his victory, Corbyn said voters are “looking for a government that on the world stage will search for peace, not war.” 10. Finally, beating all expectations, the French Left emerged victorious from the second round of legislative elections. The New Popular Front lead by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, won the most seats, followed by Macron's centrist bloc, after the two formed a “Republican Front” to defeat the Far-right, led by Marine Le Pen. Now, negotiations are underway to choose the country's next Prime Minister, according to France24. Mélenchon has campaigned on a very simple platform, stating “I'm not saying we will create a paradise from one day to the next, but we will put an end to hell.” This has been Francesco DeSantis, with In Case You Haven't Heard.

Programledare: Vendela LundbergAvsnittsmakare: Hateff MousaviyanSlutmix: Fredrik NilssonLjudklippen i avsnittet är hämtade från Sveriges Radio, France24, Complément d'Enquête, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Late Show with David Letterman, Golden Globe, AFP, Al Jazeera, The Hollywood Reporter, ”Les Valseuses”, ”Cyrano de Bergerac”, ”Green Card”, ”Asterix och Obelix möter Caesar”.Boken ”Ça s'est fait comme ça” och dokumentären ”L'homme dont le père ne parlait pas” har varit till särskilt stor hjälp under arbetet.

Season 16, Episode 16: It has been quite the story. First, the revelation that France's cricket board was approving scorecards from domestic games with no evidence of ever existing. Then, blacklisting the entire national women's squad when those players asked for an investigation. The ICC says there is nothing to see here. As ever, there is a lot of money at stake. We speak to the France24 reporter who broke the story, Peter O'Brien, and one of the banished players, Poppy McGeown. Bill Shufelt, co-founder of Athletic Brewing, hasn't just built a successful drinks company — he's revolutionized the entire American market for non-alcoholic beer. And he's done it in just six years. Bill gave up a comfortable life in finance because he knew that if he was interested in drinking non-alcoholic beer, other people would be too. But it was an uphill battle, because non-alc beer has been a stigmatized product in the U.S. almost since Prohibition. He was turned down by almost every brewer he approached, and at times was reduced to approaching strangers in liquor store parking lots to help him sell his product. Today, Athletic Brewing has grown to become the 13th-largest U.S. craft brewery and the second-largest non-alcoholic beer brand in the U.S. In 2022, Athletic was ranked as the 26th fastest-growing private company in America by Inc. Magazine and named one of TIME's “100 Most Influential Companies.” Join us for a fascinating conversation, as Bill explains how he built the company, and where he sees the market going next. Key Insights: Why non-alc beer is a major volume saver for retail and on-premise accounts. How Athletic got its first Whole Foods placement (awesome story!). How 66 individual investors took Athletic from its Seed Round all the way to Series B. Why DTC is the best channel for innovation. What the U.S. non-alc drinks segment can learn from their counterparts in Europe. The path Athletic sees for NA beer to grow to 10-20% of all adult beverages. When Sarah Hoffman had the idea to put premium wine into cans, she had no idea how revolutionary it was. But soon, she and her co-founders were convincing winemakers to trust them with their wines — and were kickstarting an entirely new category with their company, Maker Wine. In this episode of Business of Drinks, Sarah tells us how her background in digital marketing led her to launch the company, which makes high-quality, affordable wine available to everyone. Sarah explains how she learned to navigate the three-tier system, what she's discovered about wine consumers, and how Maker scaled to 22,000 cases of wine, making more than $1 million in sales annually. Join Sarah, Erica and Felicity as they discuss who the new wine consumer is and what they're looking for, how to reach them with Zoom and other digital channels, and how a group of outsiders navigated the complex world of wine, for fun and profit — and where there are still opportunities to be found. Key takeaways: How Maker raised $2.3 million in funding Early growth strategies to scale on a shoestring How data is informing Maker's brand strategy Transitioning from DTC to omnichannel How Maker grew its quarterly Can Club to more than 2K subscribers The success of limited edition drops for Millennials How to leverage influencer and UGC advertising Stay tuned for our next episode dropping on 12/27. Remember the lockdowns? It was a time when too many people spent their time drinking too much. But Nick Bodkins' wife was pregnant, so he gave up alcohol in solidarity. And, immediately, he confronted a problem that needed to be solved — non-alcoholic beverage options for adults who want something more sophisticated than a soda to drink. So he took the leap and created Boisson, a chain of non-alc stores with a DtC arm — and he's secured more than $34 million in funding, including a recent $5 million investment from Pernod Ricard's Convivialite Ventures. In this episode he tells us why the non-alc category is exploding; why non-alc creators need to think in terms of occasions, rather than flavors; and why the way forward is to build a “Sephora of drinks,” because this is a space where consumers are looking to get their problems solved, rather than looking for particular brands. Nick also discusses why bars and restaurants are crying out for these products. Above all, Nick says, follow the data. Boisson targets customers based on their browsing and purchasing behavior to drive sales and boost engagement. As always, we follow the money and ask where the opportunities are in the dynamic non-alcohol space. Bonus episode! Today's guest is Shehryar Hussain, co-founder and CEO at AccelPay. If you're unfamiliar with AccelPay, it's an ecommerce platform specifically built for bev-alc brands. It handles everything from payments to fulfillment and customer support — so any brand can sell on their own website while being 3-tier compliant. Their goal is to make it easy to sell regulated products online, and enable new digital experiences for consumers. But before we get too far, a declaration of conflict of interest. AccelPay is Business of Drinks's very first sponsor. Just to be clear, though, this podcast was BOD's idea. The more Felicity and Erica learned about AccelPay, the more they thought it was the kind of company we would feature in any case. Plus, it came highly recommended. Remember Hamlet Hound from Season 1? The Business of Drinks podcast kicked off way back in March this year, with the story of Christy Frank and her Hamlet Hound RTD, built around high-quality bourbon. BOD followed her journey from a tiny business in upstate New York through to getting wider distribution. She did it, in part, because she works with AccelPay, which allows her to sell in some 44 states, and she sang its praises to the BOD team. In this episode Shehryar reveals: How to use data to turn customers into true fans How to build customer relationships from your own website How to get sell in multiple states without a national distributor How small brands can test their brand ideas How to stay completely compliant, while offering great customer service AccelPay has been a game-changer for the beverage alcohol industry and it's a service that all everyone in beverage alcohol from start-ups to established DTC brands need to know about. This is an exciting episode! We've just launched a major, national study into the drinking preferences of Millennials and Gen Zs. Here, we reveal the results of that report, from how much these audiences spend on wine, to their evolving relationships with soft drinks, canned cocktails, and spirits. More importantly, we have fresh insights into why Millennials and Gen Zs make the drink choices they do. This is groundbreaking research that answers the key questions that are currently gripping the beverage alcohol industry — from why wine consumption is falling to what younger audiences think about alcohol and health. Five things we discuss: Why soft drinks are so important to Gen Z and what they say about how the social norms around drinking are changing. The two top wine regions for Millennials and Gen Z — what's the appeal? What makes Millennials and Gen Z choose one drink, or one brand, over another? How are demographic changes impacting the alcohol market — and what are the implications for marketers? What are the biggest influences shaping what Millennials and Gen Zs buy and drink? We partnered on the study with Roger Brooks, founder of Research and Marketing Strategies, a market research consultancy to organizations in technology and alcohol. Join us — Roger, Erica and Felicity — as we take a deep dive into the findings and emerge with answers and opportunities for people working in the drinks industry — from wine, beer and spirits to soft drinks and seltzers. If you work in drinks and you only listen to one podcast this year, make it this one. Because by the end of the episode, you'll have the answer to this big question: Where have all the younger drinkers gone? What does it take to succeed in the no- and low-alcohol space? The man to ask is Derek Brown, the award-winning bartender, author and National Academy of Sports Medicine-certified wellness coach. Derek was one of the most successful bartenders in the U.S. when he decided to re-think his relationship with alcohol. In 2020, he wrote an article for Vox called “Becoming a mindful drinker changed my life.” The article changed his life, too, as it went viral and established him as a leader in the exploding no- and low-alcohol space. Today he's the founder of Positive Damage, Inc., a company dedicated to “making room for everyone at the bar with delicious no- and low-alcohol drinks” — and he brings his bartender's sensibility to creating products that people love. In this episode, he tells us why the days of the mocktail are well and truly over, and why so many no- and low-alcohol products fail to catch fire. He also reveals the four elements that are needed to create a truly satisfying substitute for alcohol. Best of all, he tells us where to find the biggest opportunities in this space, including for wine companies. Listen along as we follow the money through the no- and low-space. Everyone who works beverage alcohol right now is asking just one question: “Where have all the young drinkers gone?” Not only are young people, both GenZs and Millennials, drinking less alcohol, but a significant number aren't drinking any alcohol at all. According to Google, 41% of GenZers don't touch alcohol, while the number of college-aged Americans who are teetotal has risen to a whopping 28%. What's going on? Is this a generational blip — or a permanent change? This season on Business of Drinks, hosts Erica Duecy and Felicity Carter explore these questions from every angle. We're also going to seek out bright spots and opportunities — and of course, we'll look for the money to be made in this rapidly evolving segment. On February 24, 2022, Russian tanks rolled across the border into Ukraine. They attacked in the north from Belarus, in the south from occupied Crimea, and they attacked from the east, heading toward the capital Kiev. Just one month before, Germany had been reluctant to send weapons to Ukraine, not wanting to inflame already tense relations with Russia. The Germans infamously offered the Ukrainians just 5,000 helmets in response to their plea for help, as Russian troops amassed at the border. But just two days after the invasion of February 24, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz made a surprise announcement. He committed the German government to increased military spending in 2022 by 100 billion euros. And, he pledged to send Ukraine 1,000 anti-tank weapons and 500 surface-to-air missiles. This move did not just put Vladimir Putin on notice that Germany would stand with the Ukrainians... It also signaled a radical shift in Germany's policy, one that had stood for decades. As the news website France24 noted, “Often described as predictable and ‘robotic,' Chancellor Olaf Scholz has become emboldened since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, smashing policy taboos to steer Germany into ‘a new era' that could reshape its role on the world stage.” (February 28, 2022) And that's exactly what this shift has done--radically change Germany's post-war policy. Since World War 2, Germany has not allowed its weapons makers to export into war zones. It has not even allowed third parties to buy them for use in these areas. That policy was a reaction to Germany's dark, Nazi past. But now, everything has changed. This policy about-face has been nothing less than stunning. But there's more to the story. You see, it's not just that Germany is taking a more muscular approach to its own defense and its neighbors' defense. There's something else happening behind the scenes. What does it mean for Bible prophecy? And where will it lead in the end-times? We'll discuss that today, on Tomorrow's World. And be ready to request your own free copy of our study guide, Germany in Prophecy. I'll give you the information to request your copy, later in the program. So, what is the significance of Germany's more robust, bold approach, politically and militarily? Why does Germany matter, especially in the end-times?
