Earlier this week we wrote an article called “A US-Made iPhone Is Pure Fantasy." The long and short of it is that Trump's dream of moving all high tech manufacturing to the US is extremely difficult because global supply chains are so intricate, manufacturing expertise exists primarily in China, Vietnam, Cambodia, and other countries, and the components that go into a phone are often made in other countries as well. But there is currently one smartphone that qualifies for a “Made in the USA” title from the FTC. It's the Liberty Phone, which is made by a company called Purism. The phone is a version of Purism's Librem 5. The Made-in-China Librem 5 costs $800, and the Liberty phone costs $2,000. It has 4 GB of memory, and reviewers say that its specs are pretty outdated. Not every single component in the Liberty Phone is made in the USA, but the company has been trying very hard to make it as American-made as possible. The fact that it exists at all is kind of a miracle, and the way that Purism is approaching manufacturing is really interesting, so I called Purism's founder, Todd Weaver, to talk about smartphone supply chains, making tech products in the United States, and tariffs. In this episode, I'm joined by Jacob Ivey, Bryson Shipman and Kyle Snook to talk about their friend, Todd Weaver. Jacob, Kyle, Bryson and Todd were all platoon leaders together in D/2-502IN before splitting off to different companies just ahead of a deployment to Afghanistan in 2010. They share some awesome parts of Todd's story from his writing letters to the families of his Soldiers to the deep conversations had right when they arrived in country. Early in the deployment, Todd and Jacob were sent to support 1-320FA in the Arghandab River Valley just outside Kandahar. They talk about Todd taking on the new mission and how much he enjoyed being able to mentor and lead a new group of Soldiers in this challenging environment. Todd was killed in action on September 9th, 2010, but it's clear in talking with his friends that he left quite the legacy and is still making an impact today. Jacob Ivey was a Ranger-qualified Infantry Officer and served as a platoon leader in the Arghandab River Valley with B/1/320 during the 2010-2011 deployment to Afghanistan by 2IBCT, 101st Airborne Division. Jacob ultimately served for 10 years before moving on to the civilian sector where he lives in Gainesville, FL with his wife and children. Bryson Shipman was an Company Executive Officer in Zhari District, Kandahar Province with D/2-502 Parachute Infantry Regiment during the 2010-2011 deployment to Afghanistan in support of OEF X-XI. Bryson is still serving in the United States Army. Kyle Snook served 5 years as an Infantry officer with a deployment as a platoon leader to Zhari District, Afghanistan with the 101st Airborne Division's 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment in 2010. He now works in healthcare entrepreneurship and lives in Denver, CO with his wife, dog and 1-year-old daughter.

As America becomes more and more divided along political lines, it is more important than ever to understand the history of tech companies using data on individuals to create startlingly accurate profiles. Case in point, the Nazi campaign of the Holocaust of the Jews in the buildup to and during WWII was made up of six phases — the identification of the Jews, the expulsion of the Jews from society, the confiscation of their assets, the ghettoization of the Jews, their deportation, and finally, their extermination. IBM — an American tech company — was intricately involved in all six phases. This episode will unpack that as much as one episode allows and I will show that Big Tech is up to the same tricks now. An invaluably important step to preventing the Surveillance State from continuing to gain the kind of power that could be used to play a repeat of the abuses of Nazi Germany is to fight political censorship in all its forms. Silencing the voices of those with whom we disagree is a dangerously slippery slope. I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend your right to say it. The alternative is too horrible to allow. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Enemy of the [Surveillance] State is written, produced, and narrated by C. Second, I address the ways you can use the extra time with family and friends to help spread the message of privacy and liberty. This week, I am joined by a special guest, Todd Weaver who because of his dedication to privacy, started a company called Purism making computers and now a phone that respect and protect your privacy. We discuss mobile privacy, how to protect it, and more. I’ve been following Purism for years now, watching the company grow and keep promises of creating top-of-the-line devices that protect privacy. As an active advocate — and practical practitioner — of privacy, I have had to hack the heck out of my devices to make them privacy-friendly. Purism’s goal is to make privacy convenient. And they are doing it. If you are considering a new phone or laptop, be sure to put them on the list of companies you check out.FULL DISCLOSURE: I HAVE NO RELATIONSHIP AT ALL WITH PURISM. I WAS NOT COMPENSATED IN ANY WAY FOR RECOMMENDING THEM. I BELIEVE IN WHAT THEY ARE DOING AND RECOMMEND THEM BASED ON THAT. Purism is the brainchild of our founder and CEO, Todd Weaver. In 2014, watching his daughters growing up, Todd was increasingly concerned about the exploitative direction of the tech industry; out of this concern, he launched a crowdfund to form Purism – a company dedicated to freedom, privacy, and security. For full show notes, check out ComputerAmerica.com!

On today's episode of the Prepped and Polished Podcast, Alexis Avila talks to Alexis Avila talks to Todd Weaver, MBA, College Financial Aid Advisor, and Vice President of Strategies for College. Todd specializes in integrating the college selection process within cost management parameters for the families he works with. Todd gives us his best FAFSA tips to get the most financial aid. Tip 1: Know your deadlines. Every college has different deadlines. Research the Financial aid web page for each specific school to get specific deadlines. Tip 2: Colleges are asking for two years worth of tax returns, so make sure you get your tax returns together dating back to January 1 of sophomore year. Tip 3: Make sure you read the directions carefully and know whose questions you're answering; student qs vs. parents qs. Tip 4: Tip for after you fill out the FAFSA, Make sure you check the summary page after you fill out the FAFSA and check to see how long it takes average graduate to graduate from a school you're looking into. If it takes six years on average to graduate from a school, then that will cost you a lot more money than a four-year school, so reconsider your options if on a budget. Did you know? TWC Constructors and Atelier3 Design are Redefining Design and Changing the Landscape Of Construction. An industry that will always be relevant and remain in demand is engineering and construction. Projections for the St. Louis region place the industry at over 4 billion dollars in the next few years. Despite the surplus of capable young men and women in this region there is a workforce shortage that threatens the industry. Today we meet two very accomplished design and construction entrepreneurs who are making tremendous impact while creating opportunities. They are as committed to community as they are their businesses. Each one of these CEO's is giving back, changing the landscape of the industry and building pathways for minorities within their design. At 11 years old, Todd Weaver came to construction and design on a dare to find work in order to help his mother out. his unique story is likened to “The Blind Side” movie. As if it were divine design, his serendipitous collision with Clayco CEO, Bob Clark laid an unimaginable foundation of opportunity for his life to develop from an entirely different blueprint. Admo Ogun was taken over by a love for the diverse landscape of this country while in America as an exchange student in college. This American site survey overwhelmed him and lured him back to St. Louis where he builds communities for and with the people it serves. Both men were guided and influenced by men of standard and strength in their lives. Today, they both strive to strengthen the young men and women who follow. Their journeys have paralleled one another to find themselves grounded and invested in the future of underserved individuals, this community and the industry as a whole. In this episode: What are the personal philosophies of these successful entrepreneurs? What perspective do they bring to this work? How has their experience in the industry shaped their commitment to community? Why the emphasis on minority contractors? As an entrepreneur, what hurdles or challenges did Todd and Admo overcome to be where they are today? What was the turning point for them in their businesses? What challenges and opportunities are there in the design, engineering, mechanical and construction industry? What advantages and opportunities are there for minority entrepreneurs in engineering and construction in our region? What do they want to create with their work and/or the way they operate their businesses? Their encouragement for those who are rethinking what's possible with their entrepreneurial endeavors? Purism develops privacy respecting laptop computers - they source the hardware components and pair it with their own Linux fork designed to completely protect user privacy. It even has a physical switch to disconnect the webcam and microphone. Because they source all of the hardware components they also have complete control of the drivers that are being used with those computers. I always love speaking with CEOs of companies as they are often the most knowledgeable about their products. I really enjoyed talking with Todd, he has an interesting concept for PC design here.
