Join your host, comedian Ryan Sim, as he tries to defend his irrational hatred of popular stuff to his guests each episode. Each episode we review the new big thing in pop culture, from TV to movies, music to books (jk no one reads books anymore).
I went back to school because turns out the podcasting industry isn't the lucrative cash cow that was promised to me. The gold rush is over my friends. Good news is, may as well keep doing it anyway! David Woodhead (Black Comedy, Be Your Own Boss) joins me to tip toe around the issue of Drake for an hour. He has a coughing fit. This episode was recorded a while ago so I don't fully remember how it goes, but I'm sure it's funny. Make sure you catch Dave at Adeaide Fringe and everywhere else.
Face of Gamergate, Ethan Simiana joins me to discuss video games and his hot parents.
Okay so there are a couple of times in this one when I might SOUND like I'm being racist but I'm not, I watch Anthony Bourdain. I know things about culture. Great, now that's out of the way and no one's gonna post about me, this episode is great. Bronwyn Kuss (@cocotits) is not only a great comedian but she's an awesome storyteller and she takes us on a JOURNEY from a naked drum circle in Edinburgh across to the NEAR EAST, the land of SPICES and SILK (I'm not racist), INDIA, where she travels from the Nepalese border up to the Punjab and back down to Mumbai. We talk a lot about how we're NOT racist, how important travel is for privileged white people to really find out "who they are," and how I've "heard of" a lot of what she talks about, mainly through Bourdain. ENJOY ONE OF THE ONLY GOOD EPISODES OF THIS PODCAST!
Holy shit this one is annoying. I have a blocked nose and I'm talking craft beer with Dan Dennis (@DapperDan8 / @beerbatteredboy) of the legendary Who DEM Boys? We drink A LOT of alcohol while recording this and get downright INSUFFERABLE. Dan pees a bunch, coz of all the drinks, and we talk about the great local producers like Green Beacon Brewing, Range Brewing, Ballistic Beer, and Slipstream Brewing Company, as well as awesome local craft beer bars like Tippler's Tap Fortitude Valley, Netherworld, and Brewski. Given the fact we sound like utter wankers the drunker we get, I'm not sure these guys would want us as spokespeople, but our enthusiasm is earnest. This is the most earnest this podcast has probably ever been. Coz it's an episode about getting wasted, the only remaining joy on God's green Earth. Also discussed: the body, blood, and cum of Christ.
Joel Batham and I solve Dutton, Morrison, Louis CK, and basically every bad thing in the world on this one baby! You thought good political comedy in Australia died along with Tonightly with Tom Ballard? Guess again! Meet your new gods (me, Ryan Sim, and also Joel). We talk about our political education (lol), whether it's worthwhile being politically engaged in Australia, the idea that being a single issue voter is okay if that issue is people literally dying in offshore detention, and the biggest issue of all: where do WE as COMEDIANS stand in this discourse? Who will listen to us and give us money? We deserve it.Please subscribe to us on iTunes, and leave us a little 5 star review.
This week I'm joined by famous podcast guest & essentially unknown comedian, Nick Carr. Recognisable as the whipping boy on The Little Dum Dum Club with Tommy Dassalo and Karl Chandler, Nick joins me on my real podcast to have a real discussion about real issues (his words), those being the teen sex comedies of the late 90s and early 2000s, specifically Sorority Boys, American Pie, and Road Trip. We blame basically all of our personality flaws on these films and basically, we're perfect humans now. I think this is a good episode but who can ever be sure?
This one is REAL HEAVY folks, so enjoy it or don't! I met Jen Sutton (@curlcity) when I ran a very tiny comedy room in a very tiny bar. She'd come to every show and we became friends, and she's lived a pretty interesting life. She said she wanted to come on and talk about God so we did. Gus has a guest starring role on this episode, sorry. Jen is a poet and has recently started doing open mic comedy and shes very funny. This episode is not very funny, but it's real deep and good.
Claudia Bergs has polio! I mean she's paleo! Your host, Ryan Sim (me) is vegan! Strap in folks, we have a real good time talking about the things we put in our mouths. She brought me macadamia nuts! We talk about racism! This episode is really late coz I was moving house and I got a puppy but I think it's really good. I don't know, I didn't listen back to me, but I'm pretty sure I didn't make any slurs. Listen! Claudia draws cartoons! Follow her Instagram @claudia_bergs
Terry Pratchett, author of the Discworld series is dead BUT he was never #MeToo'd unlike Terry Gilliam. Comedian and writer @NgaioGraceJarvis joins me to brag about how she knows how to read, how gross Neil Gaiman is (we really dropped the ball by not making a Neil Gay Man joke), and old white British men in general. She loves them!
Horse-girl Aria Salan and Hentai-boy Mickey Flykick from the Ain't It Rich podcast (subscribe, rate, review) sit down with me, Ryan Sim and talk hot rods, Neon Bebop Cowboygelion, Say Anything, and their friendship in general, including "The Exploding Horse Story." Stamps dot com.
Sam Bowden helps resurrect the podcast by talking about Arctic Monkeys and their new record Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino. I don't get it. I like Hed PE. You know, REAL music, none of this teenybopper stuff. We also talk shit on other comics, you know, a podcast, and get drunk. I'm struggling to remember how to speak on this one so enjoy it I guess.Subscribe, rate and review us on iTunes!
Well it's the most mediocre time of the year, only in 2018, it didn't fall on a day that celebrates the decimation of Indigenous culture, which means white Australians everywhere got to spend 8 hours listening to the most middle-of-the-road songs written in the past 12 months completely guilt free. Professional Comedian @JackGramenz joins returning guest/interrupter @JoelBatham to discuss their votes, the relevance of Triple J in today's cultural climate, their deceased high school teachers, and Brockhampton.
In an unprecedented betrayal, this week host Ryan Sim takes on THE STRAIGHT EDGE. Guest JOSH HOWES gives a very lukewarm defense of the subculture, and mostly the two just talk about the Australian hardcore punk scene. Ryan was straight edge for a good 10 years and then he started comedy. Josh is still straight edge but he's also from Newcastle so all his friends are on Ice, and he doesn't want to alienate them by denouncing their life choices. All in all, this episode is just two old friends reminiscing on the scene that shepherded them into adulthood, for better or worse. Josh manages the bands Cursed Earth, Easy Life and Deafcult so go buy their records and tickets to their shows.
Laura Elizabeth Dern (born February 10, 1967) is an American actress. For her performance in the 1991 film Rambling Rose, she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress, while for her performance in the 2014 film Wild, she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Most recently, she starred in Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017). Justin Theroux is also in this movie. (Follow my guests at @jonobri and @maneszj).
A spooooooky and tiiiiiiiimely Halloween episode! I really like Winona Ryder ESPECIALLY when she is stealing shit. But the only thing Stranger Things stole from me was my time AND I WANT IT BACK. Come listen as I get mad about the bad show that really encapsulates the "Content" culture we're living in. Put the coin in the slot, get some candy for your brain. We're all just mice in the Zuckerberg experiment. Anyway, return guest Michelle Azevedo battles me, insults me, and resorts to name calling in her frustration, but she can Finn my Wolfhard for all I care. We talk about all the Louis CK stuff up top coz it had literally just happened and I was real mad about it. Keep listening though, most of the episode is about that dumb fucking show everyone seems to love.
Cate Blanchett is hot as hell, although as this character, she's more like Cate BLANDchett. Resident film expert Darcy O'Connor (@therealdadsy) joins your host Ryan Sim to complain about the Marvel Cinematic Universe for an hour. We also spend about 15 minutes talking about Good Time, 2017's best movie, though that is right at the end. Go see it if you haven't, we spoil it real good. Anyway, Thor Ragnarok could have been good if Taika Waititi had actually been able to have any substantial creative input. Instead you get like a tasting plate of what he, usually a pretty good director, could do, but you gotta wash it all down with the extreme banality that is Marvel. A shitty smoothie with too many ingredients and a meaningless score. This movie is sad coz it is like BEGGING to be recognised for having "personality" but it's just the same old shit. Some good jokes I guess, and we see Hulk's sweet ass (I'm not horny).
The inaugural EVERYTHING YOU LIKE IS GOOD. Blade Runner 2049 is dope, despite Jared Leto's inclusion. Listen to an hour of a Jared and a Ryan talk about another Jared and Ryan. It's confusing and fun. Jared Smit (clever non-de-plume) is a comedian and musician, and one half of the band Release The Bees with past guest David McNevin. Topics of discussion in this episode include horniness, how old are these characters, who do they look like, and Ryan Reynolds. Jared makes fun of my house and insults my hospitality. Listen in as we get real film school on Sicario 2: Blade Runner.
Host Ryan Sim is joined by known dreamboat, Tom Cooney (whose album Futureproof is available now) and known TRAITOR, Jordan Kadell to discuss the worst film ever made, Withnail & I. Seriously, this movie sucked. It's 30 years old this year & there are a bunch of articles & special screenings happening & honestly it's all a bunch of bullshit. Tom loves this movie earnestly & he very patiently walks us through why & how it exists. Jordan & I watched this together & were in aggreeance on its complete uselessness, or so I thought. Turncoat! Anyway this is number 10. Good Schroedinger joke up top. Rate and review us on iTunes please!
This what it sounds like when you use a podcast to hang out with your friend who's been away for three weeks. We talk about everything except this album, including some hot takes on the Civil War (to be clear, I do know that Nevada fought for the Union), same sex marriage, and Incubus. Comedian Sam Bowden tries valiantly to educate host Ryan Sim about the history of the greatest third-tier American rock band, The Killers, but we mostly just get weird about anything and everything else. Highest Fallout Boy ratio of any episode so far.
Super not sure about this one. Definitely our most questionable episode thus far, and that's after I edited out a bunch of career-ending stuff. To be fair, we are talking about a film about a murderous clown hungry for children's blood. Michelle Azevedo joins host Ryan Sim and our first return guest, Joel Batham, to defend her love of this movie, which is best described, academically, as "long and shitty." We really get into the psychology of this one, and it's actually kind of interesting, but then we also make jokes about John Wayne Gacy, just so you know what you're signing up for. I had two glasses of white wine before we recorded this.
Emma Kate Lewis is a Maltese writer who is way too polite and lovely to be on this podcast. Host Ryan Sim does his best to crush her well-intentioned excitement about The National's new album to dust, and she does her best to indulge his grievances. I think this is what they call discourse? Anyway, "Sleep Well Beast" sounds like a Coldplay album from the future. It's a dystopian album, but where a show like Black Mirror fills the future with lots of spooky excitement, The National imply that the future will just be a dull grey blur, and even though that's not super fun to listen to, they're probably right. Emma disagrees, as is the point of this podcast.
Host Ryan Sim tries to get comedian Richie Goodacre (@itsallgoodacre) woke to the realities of hypermasculinity and violence, but maybe that is just a thin veil for the fact Ryan doesn't "get" sports... maybe. We talk about the obscene amounts of money getting thrown around so this guy can punch other guys in the face, and the fact that the UFC's campaign of unimaginable violence is "regulated" now. Conor McGregor is not considered so much as an individual in this episode, more of a promotional phenomenon, spectacle doing as spectacle does, vicariously sating our primal and inherent urge for blood, a modern day human sacrifice. This episode is brought to you by Squ
I can't believe we did a whole hour (plus!) podcast about GoT without ONE SPOILER! This is a spoiler-free episode you guys. No spoilers. Promise. Host Ryan Sim watched approximately 27 consecutive hours of this fucking soap opera just to do this podcast, so he was even more biased than usual. Jasmine Fairbairn (@jasmaniac) and David McNevin (@McNevin_D) came and left as die hard fans but failed to form an alliance between their houses and Ryan's. Anyway, this episode is a bunch of fun, it's got everything. Political strategy, incest, zombie dragons. We cover more ground than this entire season of this horrible TV show. Watch Six Feet Under instead.
In the most inside baseball episode of anything ever, your host Ryan Sim is joined by film maker, screenwriter, and musician, Darcy O'Connor (Manhunt, The Uglies) to discuss the emo-darlings Brand New and their first album in eight years. In Darcy's own words, it's fine. Front man Jessie Lacy gets a real lampooning in this episode. We lampoon him hard. We talk about our respective introductions to the band who seemed to justify so many young white boys' animosity towards girls who wouldn't fuck them. Ah, nostalgia. We discuss the punk rock scene and name drop a lot of bands that most people probably won't recognise. Still, this episode is probably less alienating than the self-suck fest that is "Science Fiction." Thanks to Darcy for coming on such short notice. Enjoy the episode.
A journey of discovery as host Ryan Sim strives to understand, to connect, with the mystery of Lana Del Rey. Music blogger and pillar of the community Erryn Ayres (from Broader Lines) attempts to act as spiritual sherpa, but some mountains are just too great to summit. This episode is all about America, old Hollywood, swear words, Fleetwood Mac, and finding new friends in the most unlikely places. Hopefully this is more accessible than Lana's own impenetrable and inconsistent metaphors. Enjoy!
'Everything Now' really sucks. An album that basically just says 'the internet is bad' in 2017. Exactly what we needed. This episode is a classic tale of betrayal, heartbreak, and lies. Since 'Neon Bible' was such a classic album, it has made everything Arcade Fire has released since then that much more heinous. Host, Ryan Sim, delves into his early romance with the band, dashed upon the rocks of mediocrity all too soon. Joel Batham didn't like this album either, but he's "objective" about it, but also offers insight into Win Butler's NBA career.
Things get personal on the first episode as host, Ryan Sim confronts his nemesis, director and screenwriter, Christopher Nolan. Guest and friend Jordan Kadell (comedian, actor, voice of reason) makes some good points in defense of this new WW2 epic, but Ryan remains unconvinced. We talk about how weird it was watching this film in the presence of a WW2 veteran, and do some scene breakdowns. This podcast is nothing but spoilers.
