This week, Zak and Aaron are back at it, talking about indie mega-hit Slay The Spire 2 and its evidently divided player base. You see, while the game has earned rave reviews almost across the board and attracted hundreds of thousands of players, it's also been the target of three separate review bombing campaigns, the largest of which earned the game more than 70 thousand negative reviews on Steam... predominantly in the Chinese language. Why such anger from one specific area of the world? And what's up with those other two review bombs, anyway? Please, enjoy.Check Out Bobo Bay on Steam!Sources:We Know Why They Did It - Bellular NewsI Read Chinese Reviews to Understand Slay the Spire 2's Backlash - WayshushSlay the Spire 2 is Being Review-Bombed Yet Again - GamerantSlay The Spire 2 Is Fantastic, So Why Is It Being Review-Bombed? - GameSpot Slay The Spire 2 Getting Review-Bombed Again After Latest Update - KotakuListen to Beach Girl on SpotifyCheck Out MosscatMarket on Instagram
i think I already ranted about ghostbuisters but here it is again i guess
Anita Sarkeesian is so despised by gamers that thousands purchased Slay the Spire 2 just to review bomb it because Sarkeesian was listed in the credits as a "consultant" ... whatever THAT means. Many are demanding refunds. And now the gaming media is hailing the second, third or fourth coming of Gamergate. Watch the podcast episodes on YouTube and all major podcast hosts including Spotify. How did we get to the place where gaming journalists are openly antagonistic toward the general gaming audience, and regular gamers use "gaming journalist" as a byword? Moreover, how should we, as Christians, react? Trey and I are going to look back at Gamergate and the consequences it had on gaming in the United States, and also at the aftermath and pushback that has come from those consequences.
Una leve explicación del gamergate, evento que cambio la industria de los videojuegos, critica de los mismos, y terminología en internet.
Looks like we are dealing with the current fallout of Louis Theroux's documentary on the "manosphere". Feminist have been reveling in the aftermath, shouting from the mountaintops "I told you so!" But do they have a point? Bogie muncher Laurie Penny has returned from the catacombs of GamerGate to give her take.
Today we dive into gaming culture, joined by Alison's dear friend Spenser! Who plays these video games anyway? And not just who plays them… who identifies as a "gamer”? We talk about player demographics, studies on the effects of violent video games, and the sexist/discriminatory practices of gaming companies. Then we get into GamerGate, and how its bullshit didn't stay local to gaming, but bled into the rise of the alt-right movement as well. Turns out it was never really about video games in the first place.ig: @sadgap.podcast / @misandristmemes
On a this week's (very special) episode, Nathan and Gita are joined by podcasting royalty, Michael Hobbes of If Books Could Kill and Maintenance Phase, to discuss Aftermath's latest, greatest, possibly dumbest event, Woke Week, as well as Michael's true passion: video game speedruns. What was Woke 1? What were its true ills versus those centrist pundits have wrongly tried to diagnose? And why are Woke 1 and Woke 2 fighting? Can they stop? There are also multiple shocking—to Michael—reveals throughout the episode, such as Nathan's role in Gamergate. We fill him in on all the deep gamer lore and some recent drama involving Chris and Bluesky that exemplified the Woke 1 vs 2 divide. Finally, we decide which games constitute the Woke 2 canon, and we pick out a mascot (Kirby).Credits- Hosts: Nathan Grayson, Gita Jackson, Chris Person, and special guest Michael Hobbes- Podcast Production & Ads: Multitude- Subscribe to Aftermath!About The ShowAftermath Hours is the flagship podcast of Aftermath, a worker-owned, subscription-based website covering video games, the internet, and everything that comes after from journalists who previously worked at Kotaku, Vice, and The Washington Post. Author David Wolinsky talks about whether the internet is helping or hurting more, AI destroying movies and TV, dopamine addiction, The Onion, going cold turkey on social media, the email monster, and the idea that asking questions without having the answers is better than trying to figure it out. Bio: He's a former Onion editor best known for once interviewing the watermelon-smashing comedian Gallagher turned oral historian, author, and documentary researcher. Now, he's very much in the "serious" business. His journey into oral history began with an independent initiative following Gamergate in 2014, where he recognized a gap in traditional journalism's ability to address emerging issues in digital communities. In response, he conducted interviews, launched a website, and began publishing these conversations online to highlight diverse perspectives on serious issues facing media, workers in "cool" industries, and fan subcultures. He's not an academic, but Stanford wound up stepping in to preserve all the 500+ hours of interviews this entailed. This continuum of work has resulted in a book, The Hivemind Swarmed, which will be published August 2024 by Beacon Press. The oral history, which received advance praise by Ken Burns, exemplifies his ability to take initiative, conduct in-depth research, and produce insightful interviews without external funding or institutional support. (And also, his ability to get household names to take the work of a non-household name—me—seriously.) Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
In this episode, I sit down with Brianna Wu for a wide-ranging and candid conversation on antisemitism, Israel, progressivism, trans politics, Gamergate, the Democratic Party, and the collapse of the political center in America.Brianna has become one of the most outspoken and unexpected public voices defending Israel and the Jewish community in the wake of October 7, especially within spaces where that has come at real personal and professional cost. We discuss what drew her into this fight, why so many Jews feel politically homeless right now, and why allyship has felt so rare in progressive circles. We also explore Brianna's political evolution from Democratic strategist and progressive activist to one of the sharpest critics of the excesses of modern progressivism. From Gamergate to campus culture, from anti-Zionism to the future of liberal democracy, this conversation asks what happens when both the left and the right abandon moral clarity. We also spend significant time on the national debate over transgender politics, including medical safeguarding, gender ideology, social contagion, civil liberties, and the danger of forcing every difficult issue into an all-or-nothing political framework. Whether you agree with every point or not, this is a serious and honest conversation about some of the hardest questions in American public life.We discuss:Brianna Wu on Israel and October 7Why antisemitism has exploded on the leftJewish politics after October 7Why many Jews are losing trust in the Democratic PartyTrump, Republicans, and Jewish supportGamergate and the transformation of online political cultureThe trans debate in AmericaProgressivism, victimhood, and political extremismWhy America needs a real political centerWhat solidarity should actually look likeThis was one of the most fascinating conversations I've had in a long time.#briannawu #israel #zion #transrights #trump #transhealthcare #transgender #transgirl

Videogame culture is obsessed with development. But gaming is still widely associated with wasted time, squandered potential and backwards attitudes. Even as the average gamer grows older, the medium remains dogged by the same old question: when will videogames grow up? The Gamergate movement lent this question renewed urgency, launching attacks on feminists and “social justice warriors” that have come to be seen as a catalyst for the emergence of the alt-right and election of Donald Trump. Artgames after GamerGate (Palgrave Macmillan, 2025) explores how makers of independent and experimental videogames responded to Gamergate and its aftermath. Analysing key titles released between 2015 and 2018, it shows how artgame designers used assets, characters and mechanics scavenged from classic franchises like Zelda, Street Fighter and Sonic the Hedgehog to review gaming's history, reframe their own biographies and link gaming's growing pains to a broader sense of disorientation, disillusionment and decline in American culture. Rudolf Thomas Inderst (*1978) enjoys video games since 1985. Historian Kevin Impellizeri shares a story of a video game controversy to his friends: Kate Lynch and Andy Hunter. We continue our look at The Real Game Awards, the alternative gaming awards show/business venture of former Screw Attack co-founder Craig "Stuttering Craig" Skistimas. This time around, we take a closer look at their "Worst Game Journalist" category and the moral panic over Sweet Baby Inc., a small, Montreal-based games script doctoring company/possible corrupt shadow organization manipulating all of video games. Topics discussed include: the horrors of body type B, getting mad at games that don't exist, the long legacy of GamerGate, how a former DeVry recruiter turned his obsession over Alyssa Mercante into a lucrative YouTube channel, and Kevin inadvertently stumbles upon the grift.Read Umberto Eco's influential 1995 essay "Ur-Fascism" here: https://theanarchistlibrary.org/library/umberto-eco-ur-fascism.For an introduction to KiwiFarms and LOLcows, check out the Behind the Bastards series "A Terrible Story about the Internet": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eA6Mrt5OPfE.You should also check out Kristin L. This week we look at an online phenomenon called "Gamergate" or #gamergate. This was an organized effort to "right" the "wrongs "that were done to the "integrity of video game journalism"...while others will label this as nothing more than an online harassment campaign against women in the video game world who dared to develop games they might want to enjoy. The side effects of this culture war would reverberate in the mainstream and lead to other major online movements that may be responsible for the election of a certain president... It's been a while folks, but the Munchie Boys are officially back on the horse. No, not H. The figurative horse that having a child can buck you from. And how are Adam and Josh repaid for their long overdue return to actively podcasting about Law & Order: SVU? Well, once you move past the fact that they basically had a three-minute commercial for the podcast on primetime network television, they had to watch an episode that avid gamer Ice-T has since distanced himself from. Yes, it's time to revisit Gamergate, one of the dumbest incidents in our timeline that somehow seems more and more germane to the world in which we live with each passing day.Music:Divorcio Suave - “Munchy Business”Thanks to our gracious Munchies on Patreon: Jeremy S, Jaclyn O, Amy Z, Diana R, Tony B, Barry W, Drew D, Nicky R, Stuart, Jacqi B, Natalie T, Robyn S, Amy A, Sean M, Jay S, Briley O, Asteria K, Suzanne B, Tim Y, John P, John W, Elia S, Rebecca B, Lily, Sarah L, Melsa A, Alyssa C, Johnathon M, Tiffany C, Brian B, Kate K, Whitney C, Alex, Jannicke HS, Roni C, Erin M, Florina C, Melissa H, Olivia, Holly F, and Karina H - y'all are the best!Be a Munchie, too! Today we're talking about #gamergate and how it can help us understand what has been going on in our culture, just beneath the surface. Understanding that has changed my perspective on how I address certain topics with people I engage with. "Leftists may have a better product to sell but conservatives know better how to two sell a product." Did you know? Some studies show that "right-leaning individuals" actually understand that "left-leaning individuals" are more morally sound in their foundations. This is why logic and rationalization is pointless. They don't need to be good. They don't need to be right. They aren't trying to win. They are trying to keep the argument going. The argument isn't supposed to end. They want to kick the can down the road, with no intention of recycling it. They are very good at convincing you it's in "good faith", when it is not. Don't engage. Recognize that the "high road" doesn't exist. This week Max expands on his initial response to the murder of Charlie Kirk and reflects on the diseased state of the online American male. Gen Z gamers who came of age during “Gamergate” are still living more online than “IRL” and appear to be divorced from their consequences. From school shootings to the Kirk murder, the motivations of incels are becoming harder to divine and even more radicalized from their roots. How this evolves is anyone’s guess but don’t look to this administration to dig into the problem or provide clarity; not while the anger and confusion provides the perfect cover for their Project 2025 agenda. Adam's Paternity Leave continues, so why not continue down the path that imperils Captain Don Cragen more than any Captain should be. Patreon payments are frozen for the time being. A few resourceful new Munchies have figured out a work-around where you can join as a free member and upgrade from there to a paid account which charges you for one month and unlocks the back catalog behind the respective tier of the paywall. After that first payment, you won't be charged again until we're dropping new content (which we'll warn everyone is coming), so if you want more of this it can be had, along with access to the fully uncut episodes from 100 to present and Movie Club episodes. If you thought that Munch My Benson would approach the hour-and-a-half-long Season 14 Premiere mega-sode "Lost Reputation/Above Suspicion" with a pithy plot reconstruction and a few succinct comments, you were sorely mistaken. This televised love song to Dann Florek provided so much material for Josh and Adam that it had to be broken up into roughly equal parts. This week's topics include GamerGate, a Meadow Soprano drinking game, obscure Haitian rums, tulpas, Henry Winkler, and, of course, an in-depth history of the wizened, hairline-challenged, not-quite-leading men of television. In this episode, David Wollinsky, author of The Hivemind Swarmed: Conversations on Gamergate, the Aftermath, and the Quest for a Safer Internet, and Sam Close, Assistant Professor at DePaul University College of Communication, join us to unpack systemic challenges in the video game industry. From gender and racial discrimination to toxic workplace culture, they highlight the need for moral courage, ethical decision-making, and structural changes to foster a more inclusive and equitable environment. The discussion revisits key moments like Gamergate, a flashpoint that exposed deep-seated harassment, and explores movements like the "girls game movement" that sought to empower women in gaming. Despite progress through women-led initiatives and increased awareness, the industry continues to grapple with significant barriers to inclusion and diversity. Here are some of the references from this episode, for those who want to dig a little deeper:The Hivemind Swarmed: Conversations on Gamergate, the Aftermath, and the Quest for a Safer InternetGamergate - WikipediaGamergate | Summary, Facts, & Zoe Quinn | BritannicaWhat Gamergate should have taught us about the 'alt-right'Atari founder Nolan Bushnell on why life is 'a game'Purple MoonWhat makes a AAA game a AAA game?Party Like It's 1995: The Rise and Fall of the Girl GameThe ‘Girl Games' of the '90s Were Fun and FeministThe Three Theories of Criminal JusticeConclave on IMDb, official trailerWatch the uncensored moment Will Smith smacks Chris Rock on stage at the Oscars, drops F-bombMetacriticBooks Mentioned:Broad Band: The Untold Story of the Women Who Made the Internet by Claire L. It would have been unthinkable for Brianna Wu to have appeared on Honestly a decade ago (if the show had existed back then). But Brianna isn't most people. I actually can't think of anyone else quite like her. She's a trans woman who advocates passionately for trans healthcare, but thinks many trans activists have alienated women and feminists. She's a progressive who once called Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez “one of the best politicians in America,” but is today a staunch supporter of Israel. She was cyber-attacked by an alt-right mob during Gamergate, but now thinks the political left acts just like that mob. Brianna says her politics haven't actually changed. Instead, it's the Democratic Party that has morphed. And she says they've become unelectable. But Brianna is not sitting idly by while it runs itself into the ground. She wants Democrats to get back to common sense, kitchen table issues, which is why she's launched a political action committee and is fundraising big time in the 2024 election cycle. At The Free Press we cover a lot of people whose politics have shifted over the past few years. But very few have experienced that evolution in public in the way that Brianna has. On today's episode, Brianna tells us how Gamergate changed her life, the story of her political evolution, why she is a staunch supporter of Israel, and a critic of niche left causes, and what Democrats risk if they continue to alienate voters. *** We are calling on all Free Press readers, listeners, commenters, and lurkers: We want to learn more about you and what you're craving from The Free Press.
