After a couple of weeks off for rest and recalibration, Badass Records is back with a new episode, and this one features the fantastic Cole Bales of Black Light Animals.Cole is a son, a brother, a boyfriend, a bandmate times two, and he's my guest for Episode No. 164.Black Light Animals has an upcoming RecordBar gig. That's Thursday, May 1st at RecordBar. They also have a new album out. It's called Last Call Love Songs, and you can find it digitally or get yourself a vinyl copy via their Bandcamp, or at blacklightanimalsband.com. Cole's also a member of The Freedom Affair, and they have a gig, Friday, May 2nd at The Madrid. So, please check them out, too.My conversation with Cole involved growing up, the art of recording and producing, bandmates, family, and -- of course -- a few of his favorite albums. Those were these:The White Album (1968), The BeatlesGeorge Harrison's All Things Must Pass (1970)Exile on Main Street (1972), The Rolling StonesThe Black Keys' Brothers (2010)Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino (2018), The Arctic MonkeysIt was both a pleasure and a joy meeting Cole and chatting with him. Follow @blacklightanimalsband on Instagram, and make sure you're dialed in with all that Cole has going on.Cheers.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the audio clips contained within this episode. Today, Polish Club frontman Novak joins host Jeremy Dylan to discuss the Arctic Monkey's divisive cult classic album ‘Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino', the sci-fi concept album that followed up the rock'n'roll behemoth of AM. Jeremy and Novak reminisce about their days as office-mates, Novak coming out as a singer at karaoke, ageing in rock'n'roll, why so many artists both love and envy this album, the artistic bravery of following their biggest commercial hit with a ‘jazzy concept album about eating pizza on the moon', the alternate reality where this was an Alex Turner solo album, how swerving musically helps sustain a long career and more. Listen to the new Polish Club album 'Heavy Weight Heart', out now!
Spinning Out (another music podcast) We talk to artists about their favorite albums and go on wild tangents. This week on the pod we're joined by Jael Holzman & Liam Hughes of Ekko Astral. Ekko Astral are a band from Washington, DC and they just released their debut album, "Pink Balloons," on Topshelf Records. In this week's episode we follow up on last week's episode by having the same show name, hosts and general format in what critics are calling "yet another episode." Sorry that description was boring because this album absolutely is not: the stellar (lunar?) album that 100% of the critics got totally wrong half of the time, Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino. Also in this episode: Drake does what very well be the worst AI thing yet, Billie Eilish hates certain large mammals, and Charlie cements his legacy as Villain of the Pod in a contentious showtime. We're feeling the love this week on @weheardwonders. Andrew gives his verdict on last weekend's @connectfestsco and Iain salutes a singular album celebrating its 28th anniversary. Then it's down to the new releases: big returns from Arctic Monkeys (now that he's checked out of the Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino, where will Alex Turner take up residency next?), alt-country singer-songwriter Caitlin Rose and pagan psychedelists Goat (will Iain be tempted to join fully-paid-up card-carrying tribe-member Andrew in the group's commune?), plus beguiling tunes from Silvana Estrada and Cass McCombs ripe for unpacking. Finally, something suitably stirring and cinematic has The Vinyl Word. In dieser Episode besprechen wir chronologische alle Platten von Whatever Say People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not (2006) bis Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino (2018).

That Record Got Me High welcomes local guitarist and polymath Buffalo Brown, whose band Cog Nomen made some of the best music South Florida heard in the last ten years, along with his cohort Ulysses Perez. Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino is a departure for Arctic Monkeys, from the earth to the moon, literally. A blend of modern adult angst and sweeping retro-futuristic soundtracks, it will surprise you as much as it did us. Take your seat and buckle up, it's time for lift off.
Man of Science, Man of Faith #5 - Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino by Arctic Monkeys by Zachary Leeman/Taylor Berryman
It's not a 180 degree turn, but it's certainly a 90 degree turn in the Arctic Monkey's sound with their latest release Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino. It's an album based around the idea of "Lets go and write about another world in order to comment on this one." The social commentary regarding social media, government, relationships, and technology runs up and down the lyrics while paired with a lounge style, harmonically rich, low-key sound. Easily the weirdest record in the Arctic Monkeys' catalog, Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino is a fun, flawed aberration (at least, for now). Even in failure, there's enough to explore within Alex Turner's thicket of lyrics and the haze of this inviting, yet not quite fully realized sonic setting to warrant a few active listens. Getting chemically altered and listening to this in some headphone on a very dark night might be a solid way to pass the time.
