When you conjure up an image of a c-suite executive, you probably don’t envision a smiling, friendly person. At first, Kate Lewis didn’t either. And that was a problem as Lewis started taking on jobs in the publishing world with greater and greater responsibilities: By nature, she has a smiling, friendly disposition. But she didn’t see very many people like that in the corridors of power. “In the magazine industry, there are a lot of—there’s an image, right, that you need to be a high-fashion person, that you need to have been a journalist in the trenches,” said Lewis, the chief content officer for Hearst Magazines. As a young, ambitious woman, she emulated them—thinking doing so was key to her thriving in the notoriously fast-paced New York publishing world. Instead, she had a realization that changed everything: What if being herself—that smiling, friendly person—actually made her a better leader? “I found my success when I became who I am. And that’s hard,” Lewis said during an interview for POLITICO’s Women Rule podcast. “I became comfortable with just being Kate. And that enabled me to have more candid, more deep, more real conversations with the people who were either going to hire me or were going to manage me or who I was going to work with. And I think that has made me more successful.” At Hearst, Lewis oversees some of the most enduring and recognized magazines in America, including Cosmopolitan, Country Living, Good Housekeeping, Elle, Marie Claire, Popular Mechanics, Harper’s Bazaar and Elle, to name a few. “Even though wisdom may be, you know, not to be the goofball, and to … not openly question yourself or open yourself up for debate, I think that has worked out really well for me,” Lewis said. “I think it’s coupled with the fact that I am decisive, and when I see the path, I go after it, and that I am capable of being critical, and all those things.” “To me, that is the best strategy,” said Lewis: “Just be yourself and trust that that’s enough.”

Kate Lewis is a Deputy Program Manager with the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) BioPreferred Program. She joins Biobased Radio host, Denny Hall, from Philadelphia where she’s attending BIO International, a convention dedicated to growing the global biotech industry. In the episode, Denny asks Kate about her journey to the BioPreferred Program through a degree in communications and her early career at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) where she worked on the Energy Star program. When Kate came to the USDA’s BioPreferred Program, one of the program’s biggest challenges was finding a way to educate the public on biobased products and creating a system that would certify those products. Thus, the USDA’s Certified BioPreferred label was born. Since the inception of the BioPreferred label, the program has certified 3,500 products in over 100 categories. To search the online catalog of certified products, check out the BioPreferred website at https://www.biopreferred.gov/BioPreferred/faces/catalog/Catalog.xhtml. But, wait. What is a biobased product? Kate goes into detail about what makes a particular product biobased and eligible to receive the Certified BioPreferred label. Haven’t heard of biobased products before? You’re not alone. According to a survey conducted by the Bioproducts Innovation Center at The Ohio State University, only 8% of the public are aware of biobased products. How can we change that? Kate has some advice for people who are interested in creating a more sustainable future and how you can get involved. Music is Beyond The Line from Bensound.com

Emma Kate Lewis is a Maltese writer who is way too polite and lovely to be on this podcast. Host Ryan Sim does his best to crush her well-intentioned excitement about The National's new album to dust, and she does her best to indulge his grievances. I think this is what they call discourse? Anyway, "Sleep Well Beast" sounds like a Coldplay album from the future. It's a dystopian album, but where a show like Black Mirror fills the future with lots of spooky excitement, The National imply that the future will just be a dull grey blur, and even though that's not super fun to listen to, they're probably right. Emma disagrees, as is the point of this podcast.

Luke 12:13-21 Today's gospel is proclaimed by our preacher. Here are some of her notes to accompany her dialogue with our congregation. `````` I used to hear our text today, “Fool, this very night your life is being demanded of you,” and it took it as a threat. – a moral admonition to get back in line. But friends, that’s not it. To know, at every moment, that my life is being demanded of me, That all can be lost, that nothing is forever, And that my efforts at security are pointless, To know all this is actually one of the Gifts of God for the People of God. God’s gift, Jesus’ message over and over again, is to tell us and teach us That it’s by our woundedness that we find out holiness. When I die to my own ego, break apart the structures of my false self, When I do not cling tightly to my own manufactured sense of security- Then I am alive and free and happy and safe. With this in mind, I bring you an image that I stumbled across on Facebook That has grabbed a hold of my attention for these past weeks I share it with you and I want to talk about it with you.
