2017 studio album by The National
POPULARITY
On episode 24 of Past Prime, we go full “Sad Dad.” In 2017, after a decade being carried in the arms of cheerleaders, The National were disoriented. Their unexpected stardom was bumping up against their middle-aged domesticity. There was the scary new President. Members of the band even dared to leave Brooklyn for “the ru-burbs.” “Sleep Well Beast” was the band anxiously experimenting their way through the malaise of middle-age complacency. In this episode we discuss the contemporary compulsion for change (“Kid A Syndrome”), modern farmhouse architecture & the fine line between anxiety & depression in The National's seventh studio album. To read more about Television's self-titled reunion album, check out the full essay at Past Prime.

On this new episode of Cosmic America, we take a listen to Sleep Well Beast, the four-years-in-the-making follow-up to Trouble Will Find Me. There's a definite evolution of sound here from earlier in the decade, including guitar solos(!) and a more antiseptic, distant mix. How do these sonic shifts affect the songs? Galen and Alex go track-by-track through the whole album, as we continue our evaluation of the entire catalogue of The National.
Emotionally estranged from your spouse? Avid vocal fry ASMR listener? The National’s Grammy winning record Sleep Well Beast may be for you. The guys are back to talk about Sleep well beast, the latest (for now) album by the national. Sorry it's a day late.
Unfortunately, the guys didn't have enough time to record a full episode, so here is their thoughts on the latest single from The National. Even more unfortunate, the guys spend the first 10 minutes talking about politics. This is your trigger warning. If you're not interested in listening to two idiots navigate a topic well beyond their depths, just skip to next week where they'll be covering Sleep Well Beast... You have been warned!

This is the big 'un. We talk about literally everything. EVERYTHING. It was recorded in the beginning of September, before we were completely aware we'd waste an entire month of our lives on Destiny 2, but we touch on Until Dawn, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, Modern Baseball, and the National's new album, "Sleep Well Beast". Enjoy!

Exquisitely crafted as always Sleep Well Beast is keeping with The National sound. It hits all the old notes while adding a few blips and bleeps to the mix that we're not sure improves or detracts. But one thing is for sure: dont sleep on this indie rock beast, the national prove yet again they are masters of the craft. So pour a little something in your lemonade cause we got a secret meeting in the basement of my brain and the only topic on the agenda is The National! Emma Kate Lewis is a Maltese writer who is way too polite and lovely to be on this podcast. Host Ryan Sim does his best to crush her well-intentioned excitement about The National's new album to dust, and she does her best to indulge his grievances. I think this is what they call discourse? Anyway, "Sleep Well Beast" sounds like a Coldplay album from the future. It's a dystopian album, but where a show like Black Mirror fills the future with lots of spooky excitement, The National imply that the future will just be a dull grey blur, and even though that's not super fun to listen to, they're probably right. Emma disagrees, as is the point of this podcast.
Last month I wrote a profile for Uproxx.com that detailed the making of The National's latest album, Sleep Well Beast, which came out on Friday. The band worked at guitarist Aaron Dessner's studio in upstate New York. What else is there to say about yet another great National album? Plenty, in fact. I reached out to Jayson Greene, formerly of Pitchfork and Wondering Sound, to talk about how The National manages to evolve within the relatively narrow confines of a fixed identity. We both agree that Sleep Well Beast extends the band's run of first-rate albums, but what exactly makes this record different from the others, while also reiterating the National's established themes and sound? In First Impressions 002, we discuss The National's seventh LP, "Sleep Well Beast." One of our most anticipated albums of 2017, here The National abandon whiskey for the vape pen, and conjure up a plodding, late-nite record, while still retaining the elegant songwriting that we've always loved about them. Songs featured in this episode are: "Day I Die," "Empire Line," and "Carin At The Liquor Store." The National's Matt Berninger and Bryan Devendorf join host Brian Hiatt to go deep on the making of their new album, Sleep Well Beast. They explain how weed, Donald Trump, Karl Rove inspired some of the songs, and why "rock n' roll in general is on its way out."
In this episode, Sean and Jake discuss their excitement about new single from the National and their upcoming new album "Sleep Well Beast." They also discuss PWR BTTM and the recent sexual assault allegations that have been made against the band. Segments include Trim the Fat on The Beatles classic White Album and Two Truths and a Lie about Rolling Stone.
