Dave Parkin: Trusting Your Instincts

Twenty-five years ago, Dave Parkin opened Blackbird Sound Studio in Perth, Western Australia, an independent recording studio that he own's and manages. Since then, he's been working in the music industry, picking up awards along the way—including 14 WAMI Producer of the Year wins and an ARIA-winning song—plus a handful of nominations. Dave's had numerous songs chart in the ARIA rankings and a few tracks in the Triple J Hottest 100, with one reaching #2 and several others making the top 10.Beyond the accolades, one of the most rewarding parts of his career has been working closely with bands such as Jebediah, South Summit, Old Mervs, Great Gable, and Spacey Jane, to name a few, on song structure, arrangement, and helping shape their sound. He's had the privilege of contributing to the launch of many successful artists, both independent and signed to record labels, guiding them through the creative process and bringing their music to life.Despite all that, Dave has kept a pretty low-key online presence and hasn't relied much on advertising— he's always preferred to let the music speak for itself, and people find him through the work he's done. More than anything, Dave loves what he does and feels lucky to have built a career around it. These days, he's found a better balance between work and family, trading the long, late hours of his 20s for a more sustainable routine. Making music is still his passion, but so is spending time with his wife and kids.IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN:Getting started with running a studioHow to find good bands to trust you with working on their musicBeing open to experimentationDealing with impostor syndromeHow to create clarity with effectsAutomating effects during the tracking stageWhen to use reverb vs. delayCreating movement in a mix through sidechained effectsDistorting drumsHis trick for tracking big, fat snare soundsTo learn more about Dave Parkin, visit: http://www.blackbirdstudio.com.au/Looking for 1-on-1 feedback and training to help you create pro-quality mixes?Check out my coaching program Amplitude and apply to join:https://masteryourmix.com/amplitude/ Want additional help with your music productions? For tips on how to improve your mixes, visit: https://masteryourmix.com/ Download your FREE copy of the Ultimate Mixing Blueprint: https://masteryourmix.com/blueprint/ Get your copy of my Amazon #1 bestselling books:The Recording Mindset: A Step-By-Step Guide to Creating Pro Recordings From Your Home Studio: https://therecordingmindset.com The Mixing Mindset: The Step-By-Step Formula For Creating Professional Rock Mixes From Your Home Studio: https://masteryourmix.com/mixingmindsetbook/ Check out our Sponsors:Want more Mixing or Mastering clients? Stu Watts chats with Alex Lahey, who is an LA based multi-instrumentalist, producer, and writer from Melbourne, Australia. Despite studying jazz saxophone at university, Alex hit her stride with her distinctive brand of infectious indie rock as showcased through two successful albums released on Dead Oceans in US/Europe and via her imprint Nicky Boy Records in Australia/NZ, where she's been ARIA Gold certified, has charted in the ARIA Top 20, and has had multiple songs in the Triple J Hottest 100 over the last 5 years. Her third album, 'The Answer Is Always Yes' released in 2023 was critically acclaimed by Pitchfork and The New York Times and has seen Alex tour the album across the US, Australia, Europe and the UK. An engaging collaborator, Alex has become a go-to writer and producer for artists looking to straddle the pop and alternative worlds, providing unique lyrics paired with accessible yet imaginative sonics. Her own songs have become a favorite across the film/tv and advertising landscape, with prominent placements in shows like Grey's Anatomy, Ramy, The Bold Type and Supergirl, video games such as the relaunch of Tony Hawk Pro Skater, advertising campaigns for Lidl, and original composition for film including the theme song “On My Way” for the Oscar-nominated animated film The Mitchells vs. The Machines. What on earth can us business owners learn from Jono Coghill, a member of Powderfinger … one of Australia's biggest ever rock bands? The answer? Plenty! Tune in as we go deep into the business of music with rock 'n roll royalty. It's a very rock ‘n roll episode 612 of The (13 year-old, award-winning) Small Business Big Marketing podcast with host Tim Reid.  A little more about Powderfinger's Jono Coghill …  Jono Coghill was the drummer for Powderfinger, one of Australia's biggest rock bands of the 90s and naughties. Their achievements include 18 ARIA awards, the third highest behind Silverchair and John Farnham, including Best Group, Album of the Year and Highest Selling Album.  They've sold millions of albums, and accumulated well over 1.5 billion downloads on Spotify alone. Their anthems These Days and My Happiness were ranked #1 on the Triple J Hottest 100 in 1999 and 2000, and 21 other Powderfinger tracks have ranked on this list in other years. They've toured with ColdPlay, Crowded House and Silverchair, and have had their music feature in Hollywood blockbusters including Mission Impossible and Two Hands. Now, at this point I can hear you yelling down your speaker “Hey Timbo, what's all this got to do with small business marketing?” Everything! This is a deep dive with one of Australia's rock ‘n roll royalty about the business of music. Afterall, Powderfinger went from an idea to a small business to a very fucking big one. New episodes come out every Monday. You can find the week's other reviews on the show's social on Instagram @themastercast and Twitter @mastercastpods I'm your host, Marie, and this week I'm bringing you a review on …"Like a Version"This weekly music podcast is actually a recorded segment that is performed live on the Australian radio station Triple J. It was created by Mel Bampton for his show "Mel in the Morning" in 2004.Every set has artists, both international and local, play two songs, one of their own and a cover of someone else's in their own style (or version). It's similar to BBC's "Radio 1's Live Lounge" sets and Irish Today FM's "Even Better Than the Real Thing." The name is also said to be a play on “Like a Virgin” Madonna's 1984 album.Originally these performances were acoustic, but the style has since developed to include all sorts of music. The show's wide popularity has led to CDs as well as some of the covers making it onto the Triple J Hottest 100.It is also a podcast on most podcast players but a playlist on Spotify. While most sets can be found on Triple J's website as well as their YouTube channel, the online archive doesn't go back further than August 2006.Like most cover songs, you have to take the good with the bad. While there are some incredibly well-done ones, there are also misfires. I really enjoy when bands really try to cover a song in their own style instead of as close as they can to the original. It is like a version after all.Apple Podcasts has 4.6 stars and 32 Ratings. So far there are 577 episodes currently available with new ones coming out every Thursday, and on average they last about 20 minutes.OwlTail's most popular isn't working for this podcast, but my favorites are almost too hard to pick. I adore the CHVRCHES cover of Kendrick Lamar's 'LOVE' (their ‘Do I Wanna Know?' is also amazing), and Meg Mac's ‘Let it Happen' originally done by Tame Impala. Those are just two of the many stunning songs. Seriously, all worthy of checking out, but again some are better than others. No swears for this one but the nature of songs can vary. Side note: Triple J does another brilliant segment called "Bars of Steel" that features rappers and is worth checking out (I recommend A.Girl's set).Similar Pods: "Tiny Desk Concerts," "Live Lounge Uncovered" and "Headliners"That's all for this week, but remember if you want to see the cover art, sources or the written transcript for this episode be sure to check out the show notes or KCSUFM.com. In the early '90s, indie pop band Frente! enjoyed a meteoric rise in Australia, going from the Triple J Hottest 100 to regulars in the top 5 of the ARIA chart in just a couple of releases. In this episode, we hear from singer Angie Hart about the band's early success and the backlash they suffered following the release of "Accidently Kelly Street", which was brutally parodied by The Late Show. This episode also covers a different — but linked — music industry story. In 1995, Angie provided vocals for a track called "Tingly" by Pop! But despite rave reviews and support from a variety of FM radio networks, it wasn't the hit it should have been. Now, as Angie has reunited with Pop! for new single "Waiting", she and Amy Flower explain what happened with "Tingly". We'll also hear about Frente's acoustic cover of New Order's "Bizarre Love Triangle" and less commercially successful second album, Shape, and eventual split.

Not too shabby for a track released a year and a half ago.Glass Animals are an anomaly in the best possible way, conjuring otherworldly psychedelic pop and hypnotic electronica in their recordings, while also often reworking their tracks to be more dance friendly for their live sets - and Aussie fans are set to cop the group live in technicolour action later this year, with the group lined up to play their biggest headline shows to date, including Perth, Sydney and Melbourne in July, and they're also on deck for the sold out Splendour In The Grass extravaganza lined up for July as well. And along for the ride, of course, will be a long-awaited live celebration of the group's sublime 2020 album Dreamland. But before the band return to their adoring fans here in Australia later this year (and for the first 2022 episode of The Green Room): today frontman Dave Bayley joins host Tiana Speter to discuss live shows, personal songwriting, what kept him going through the pandemic and new music confirmation and much more - including the fact that host Speter scarily and somewhat poetically had some glass shatter in front of her thanks to a storm the moment the interview Zoom call started.IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS:Glass Animals being "honorary Australians" and finally returning down under to tour their album DreamlandThe history of Glass Animals playing in Australia, and a particularly memorable Falls Festival moment for Dave featuring an Aussie fan and a belt made out of goon bagsWhy Dave loves playing at festivals, and Dave accidentally reveals his go-to festival disguise to get out and about in the crowdWhat we can expect from a Glass Animals show in 2022, and what it was really like to play their first live show post-lockdown in the UK (hint: there were nerves and possibly tears)The contributing factors that led to their 2020 album Dreamland being more personal than previous Glass Animals material, and how the band felt when the album was finally releasedThe incredible success for Heat Waves, both globally and here in Australia, and the contribution the love down under had to Dave traversing the COVID-19 pandemicDave chats about his love of Australia, Aussie crowds compared to other countries and how his mum's new boyfriend may contribute to him being in Australia more oftenWhy Dave currently finds himself loving festival shows compared to more intimate venues (for now)Dave reminisces about the first ever official Glass Animals live show, warts and all, as well as how it helped them positively evolve and led to their early Australian performancesWhat bands and artists caught Dave's ears in 2021, including Aussie artist D. D DumboDave reveals some minor secrets about what Glass Animals are cooking up in 2022 (hint: new music)Dave's key item on the rider when Glass Animals are on the road (Jerry Seinfeld would approve), and why we might be able to get our hands on a Dave Bayley cereal sometime soon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Something I forgot to mention was that I voted I Don't Want to Talk I Just Wanna Dance by The Glass Animals as my number 1 for Triple J‘s Hottest 100 and it got 23. Talk about The Jungle Giants concert held in Brisbane is in the episode as well and it finishes with a song by Bring Me the Horizon. Ancient Channels: Live at The Zoo, Fortitude Valley, 23 July 2020 In 2019 Kelly Hanlon from Terra Pines and DEAFCULT joined with Chris Preindl from Leavings, Apparitions and Vestiges to start a new musical project called Ancient Channels. With Hanlon on vocals, guitars and keyboards and Preindl handling drums and percussion, they recorded an album called "Moments In Ruin". While trickling out a string of singles ahead of the album's release, they recruited an all-star team to bring the multi-layered songs to life onstage, featuring talent from bands including A Country Practice, Start Together, The New Middle Class and Julia R. Anderson's band. In addition to Hanlon and Preindl, the full seven-piece lineup of Ancient Channels features Elise Clark on vocals, Gerard Lawrence on guitar, Joel and Kelly Saunders on keys and Imogen Kowalcyzk on bass. This set you're about to hear is notable for two reasons. First, it was the debut live performance of Ancient Channels, and second, it was the first gig to be recorded by Live Delay since the easing of restrictions on live music venues that came about as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Special safety precautions were in place at this gig, such as isolated, jazz club-style seating, reduced venue capacity and stringent cleaning measures before and after the show. Recorded by Scott Mercer Mixed by James Potts Special thanks to live engineer Steve Palmer Pale: Live at The Zoo, Fortitude Valley, 9 August 2019 In 1992 Tim Hills and Ben Thompson from the band The Modern Poets struck out on their own to form a new outfit called Pale. Soon joined by drummer Dale Rankine, their debut EP, "Submerged" was released on cassette later that year. This was followed by three further EPs on CD: "Fade Buzz" in 1994, "Felicia's Window" in 1995 and "Art Of Mind Control" in 1996. The single "Lemon Sparked", off "Fade Buzz", reached number 62 in the 1994 Triple J Hottest 100. Rankine ultimately left the trio and was replaced by Leigh Nelson from the bands Freeside and Tangled Shoelaces. In the late '90s Pale's members began exploring more and more side projects, and they eventually split in 2001 after the release of the album "Travelling Indoors". Since then they have reunited for special occasions in 2006, 2014 and most recently in 2019, at this gig you're about to hear, which featured both drummers from the band's history taking turns behind the kit. Recorded by James Fearn-Wannan Mixed by Harry McKenzie Special thanks to live engineer Steve Palmer This set was mixed by an audio production student from the School of Audio Engineering Institute Brisbane as part of their course. We talked about our predictions for the Triple J Hottest 100 of The Decade that's happening in March, we played a game of This or That where Cam and Jacob decide whether I gave them a Pirate's name or an Australian Explorer's name, and we talked about some really interesting letters in MQULOVERANTS which eventually lead to us talking about cuck-ery for the 3rd week in a row. Being a White Australian growing up, this was the day Australia was born.So what is Invasion Day? Shouldn't we be proud of the country we live in now? How does what happened 200 years ago effect us in 2020? Shouldn't we all celebrate Australia together? These are honestly the questions I asked myself when I first heard of "Invasion Day". And because of this, one thing that I knew, was that I didn't understand the meaning of Australia Day to Indigenous people. This podcast was my chance to speak with my friend, Shain Stephens, who is from the Iwaidja people. What do you do when you live on the Gold Coast and you've already visited the various amusement parks? If you're Amy Billings - aka Amy Shark - you take to learning guitar, working your way up to singing and eventually giving the whole singer-songwriter thing a go. After building up a sure but certain following, Billings went for gold with last year's "Adore." What she ended up with, however, was double platinum and the #2 spot in the Triple J Hottest 100. So, who is this out-of-nowhere upstart and what's next on her radar? Before a sold-out show at the Newtown Social Club (RIP), Billings talked Twitter trolls, Thirsty Merc and the day the nation adored her. Amy Shark's "Night Thinker" EP is out now. She is performing nationally at Groovin' the Moo and touring in support of Milky Chance. Melbourne via Hobart via Sydney's Courtney Barnett has come a long way since kicking around in bands in her youth. This supposed overnight success story has come through years of DIY touring, slide-guitar detours and a steady build up to one of the country's most celebrated contemporary songwriters. Days before chalking up four songs in the Triple J Hottest 100 - and hours before performing a sold-out show at the Enmore Theatre in Sydney - Courtney spoke about her initial interest in music, the communities she's involved herself with along the way and the tall-poppy syndrome that has come with her success. Sometimes I Sit And Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit is out now via Marathon Artists / House Anxiety / Milk! Records / Mom + Pop Music, depending on where you live. You can stream, download and purchase physical copies of the album here: https://courtneybarnett.bandcamp.com/album/sometimes-i-sit-and-think-and-sometimes-i-just-sit Courtney's label, Milk!
