Making asking anything & everything from the Lord a habit of the Heart. A key connection with living joy.
Ever been surprised by something and then think, “I should have seen that one coming”. In todays gospel Jesus is preparing his disciples and all of us that if we stand with Him we are standing against ‘the world' and ‘The World' has at the center of its dogma a belief that can be summed up in a sentence from the Supreme Court ruling Planned Parenthood vs Casey: “At the heart of liberty is the right to define ones own concept of existence, of meaning, and the mystery of human life”. Be prepared, the world is very much threatened by anyone who would contradict those core beliefs by maintaining that God, not man is the center of all reality. “Blessed are those who are persectued for the sake of righteousnes, the kingdom of heaven is theirs”.
St. Thomas Aquinas defines ‘Delight' as resting in the possession of some good. What or who do you delight in? When have you been delighted in? If only we could bottle that up? In today's Gospel, John 15:9-17, Jesus reveals his desire to for us to remain or ‘abide' in Him, the fruit of that will be ‘Living Joy'. Jesus says and does a lot things in throughout the Gospels which are shocking. In today's Gospel, John 6:60-69 Jesus seems to really have crossed a line. We live in a world, a culture that thrives on being shocking. What the Church believes about the Eucharist should shock you and can be used to shock others.
What are you afraid of? Fear can distort our perspective on life, on God. When the storms of life descend upon us, its not uncommon to believe that God is not present or does not care. His promise is, “I am with you always”.. True love casts out all fear.
Mark 16:9-15 Misery loves company, but only the same kind of company. Like the disciples we can get stuck in our misery and focus on the problems not the promise of the resurrection. Jesus is calling out to us, ‘Eyes up here'… There is nothing the power of the resurrection can not redeem and therefore give us hope.
Tonight we celebrate the intuition of the Priesthood and the Holy Eucharist. What advice would I give my younger, just ordained self?
In the Gospel today, Jesus gives us a glimpse into what is going on in the hearts of two different men at prayer. If we could read a transcription of what goes on in our hearts at prayer, what might they reveal?
St. Joseph the Patron Saint of the universal Church… a silent saint whose actions spoke louder than words.
Matthew 5:43-48 Pray for your enemies, change your world… and be perfect as your Heavenly Father is perfect.
What do we share in common with the call of Levi who left everything to follow Jesus? The answer is in the invitation for a real Metanoia … a transformation of how we see everything, profoundly how we are to see ourselves in through His eyes
In the Gospel today Jesus looks right at his disciples and says something that seems quite the contrary of what one would expect or think about being ‘blessed'. When was the last time you said or felt you were blessed?
Mark 3:20-21 “He is out of his mind.” Jesus relatives knew Jesus but they did not really know him, who he really was. They said he was ‘out of his mind'. The great crisis in the church today is many within the Church know about Jesus but they don't really ‘know him'. Evangelization has to be more than words about Jesus but facilitating an encounter with the risen Lord.
Matthew 17:9, 10-13 St John Paul II said the key to understand all reality is the loss of fatherhood. The first reading that refers to what the prophet Malichi said: “How awesome are you, Elijah, in your wondrous deeds! You were destined, it is written, in time to come to put an end to wrath before the day of the LORD, To turn back the hearts of fathers toward their sons, and to re-establish the tribes of Jacob. Advent invites us to ponder the reason behind the mystery of the incarnation, of God's coming to us in his Beloved Son. Jesus is the one who has come to turn our rebellious hearts back to our Heavenly Father.
Matthew 9:35-10:1, 5-8 “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest.” How dependent god is on us, to help complete his mission. He calls, he equips and then he sends us, ‘to be his hands, his heart'.
Luke 20:27-40 Some Sadducees, those who deny that there is a resurrection, came forward and put this question to Jesus, saying.. The question raised in the gospel is not really about ‘whose wife will she be in heaven' but do you believe in the Resurrection. At the end of our liturgical year, the Church invites us to reflect on our ‘now‘ moment and connect it with the ‘hour of our death'.
Luke 16:9-15 Jesus said to his disciples: “I tell you, make friends for yourselves with dishonest wealth, so that when it fails, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings Ignatius' Principle and Foundation grace of holy indifference which expose our inordained attachments, will help free us from our inordinate attachments and live for that which we were created, to praise, reverence and serve god.
Luke 14:1, 7-11 On a sabbath Jesus went to dine at the home of one of the leading Pharisees, and the people there were observing him carefully. In today's gospel, Jesus turns the tables on Pharisees, exposing their pride and insecurity and revealing absolute necessity of the virtue of humility.
Luke 13:1-9 ‘For three years now I have come in search of fruit on this fig tree but have found none. So cut it down. Why should it exhaust the soil?' What must I do to bear good fruit? The paradox of the spiritual life, is primarily not really doing but letting something be done unto us. Imitating Mary we first have to “Let it be done unto me” and then fruitfulness will follow.
Matthew 18:1-5, 10 “See that you do not despise little ones, for I say that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father.” Devotion to our Guardian Angels is not just a piety for children, they are given to us by God and intercede for us constantly.
Luke 9:43b-45 While they were all amazed at his every deed, Jesus said to his disciples, “Pay attention to what I am telling you. The Son of Man is to be handed over to men.” Jesus wants to deter the disciples and each of us from falling into the trap of seeking our identity from the approval of the world, or others. Our identity is received not achieved.
Luke 8:4-15 “But as for the seed that fell on rich soil, they are the ones who, when they have heard the word, embrace it with a generous and good heart, and bear fruit through perseverance.” ‘Nunc Coepi', Latin for “Begin Again”, an attitude, a spiritual posture of trusting in Divine Mercy which is essential for finishing the race.
Luke 6:43-49 “I will show you what someone is like who comes to me, listens to my words, and acts on them. That one is like a man building a house, who dug deeply and laid the foundation on rock”. At the heart of the principle and foundation of the Spiritual Exercises is an awareness of how utterly dependent I am on God for everything.
Luke 6:1-5 The chosen episode number 6, season 2 depicts the scene from todays gospel of Jesus and his disciples being confronted by the Pharisees for violating the sabbath. True worship is brings about integration to the whole of our whole lives. St. Catherine said: “Come who you are called to be and you will set the world on fire.”
What are your ‘talents'? Patrick Lencioni, author of Five Dysfuncitons of a Team, came up with 'WIDGET' 6 types of working genius. Google it! (Wonder, Invention, Discernment, Galvanizing, Enablement, Tenacity) When I discover where God has naturally gifted me, I can embrace those areas and recognize areas I‘m just not naturally gifted in, and therefore need others in the mystical body of Christ to help me. St. Irenaeus said, “The glory of God is man fully alive.” Matthew 25:14-30
John 21:15-17 Jesus asked Peter “Do you love me”… an invitation to an immediate & profound examination of conscience , to recognize that sin is not just a one sided equation and then an invitation to try to absorb the mystery of how much he loves us.
John 15:12-16 Jesus said to his disciples: “This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. What are the marks of true friendship?
Matthew 17:14-20 ‘Because of your little faith..'. There are areas in our heart where we just don't believe or trust in God's goodness. Need to ask the Lord to increase our faith in who He is, and in who He says we are. To believe like St Paul, ‘That I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me‘.
