As a result of Zilla Jones' The World So Wide, slated for publication with Cormorant Books on April 26, 2025, Linda reflects on opera (specifically Verdi's La Forza Del Destino) – historically an elitist art form, but one that Felicity Alexander, the protagonist of Jones' novel, in part challenges and overcomes through the very successes of her career. The trajectory of that career takes a darker turn when she finds herself in Grenada during the 1983 American invasion of that country – not an untimely revisioning of history in view of the current American political situation (27:40; 28:50).Linda also speaks about Verdi's La forza del destino with Renata Tibaldi as Leonore and her father's love for opera (2:15), before she turns to the interview with Zilla Jones to speak about the following:Opera's potential as an artform vs. its polarizing, and its elitism as art form (3:20; 12:30)Arts vs. politics (13:30)Sara Ahmed's What's the Use? Care More Be Better: Social Impact, Sustainability + Regeneration Now
The coffee industry is indeed one of the most thriving in the world, but it has a darker and rarely discussed aspect: the plight of its farmers. They constantly face low commodity prices and get little to no support, making them highly exploited by middlemen and at risk of climate change. Bob Fish and Michelle Fish share what they are doing to salvage the coffee industry through their business, Biggby Coffee. Joining Corinna Bellizzi, the couple shares how their direct-buying model guarantees coffee farmers fair prices and helps promote regenerative farming practices. Bob and Michelle also emphasize the importance of building emotional connections between consumers and producers through their Full Circle Program.Message From Bob:My name is Bob Fish. My wife Michelle and I are on a journey to discover and unite us with the lands and the people that make this unbelievably great and natural product that we all love. We will examine and verify that what we are consuming is being produced in a humane, sustainable, and quality matter. We invite you to be right there with us as we meet the families and learn their names and their stories. Together, we will explore what it means to be on our ”One BIGG Island in Space”… oneness without boundaries.About Guests:Michelle Fish began her life as part of a family that lived in many places in the United States and Europe. By the age of 17, when she started college at Michigan State University, she had moved 13 times. She put herself through MSU by working at a local family style pancake house restaurant. By the time she graduated, she was the General Manger of that restaurant and two years later, after helping them grow from one to four locations, she owned the third one. Michelle took a year off and created with co-founder Mike McFall the concept BIGGBY COFFEE. They started with one location in 1995, added a second in 1997, and started franchising in 1999. Today, they are 100% franchised and have 408 units open in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida and Idaho.Bob Fish and his wife Michelle are travelling the world in search of coffee farms and farmers that are taking exceptional care of their people and the planet. Their goal is that 50% of the 2,000,000 pounds of coffee that BIGGBY COFFEE sells in a year will be farm direct by 2013. The couple tells the stories of those farmers and their journeys in a blog: ONEBIGGISLANDINSPACE.comGuest LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/biggbybob/Guest Website: https://www.biggby.com/https://www.onebiggislandinspace.com/Guest Social: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_guvQGVUpohttps://www.facebook.com/BiggbyCoffee.Bhappyhttps://www.instagram.com/biggbycoffee/JOIN OUR CIRCLE. As the ship continues to burn and crumble on the mountainside, Trix introduces Regi to the rest of their current group. In turn, Regi reveals that the mayor from Sparrow's Landing has put out an open contract for their deaths. He tells them that while she doesn't plan to go through with the contract now, they warn them that if he doesn't do something the contract will remain open and will have to deal with worse foes down the road. Eight offers to give him their finger as “proof”, but the party decides they have some time to work out a plan as Regi will need to accompany them for a while before they can leave the desert. The party, plus Regi, set up camp for the evening. Eight uses some magic to repair most of the damage to the cart before getting instructions on sleeping from Regi. Seeing their excitement to try it out, the rest of the group divides into pairs for watch. Trix and Regi take the first watch, and use the time to catch up on what they've been up to since they parted ways. While overall the conversation is pleasant, Trix brings up an uncomfortable and potentially problematic flaw in Eight's plan to give up a finger. today we're delving into the topic of relationships, exploring those moments when doubts and struggles arise. You know those times when you've tried everything, followed the books, but you're left wondering, "Is this relationship worth fighting for?" We often hit this crossroads in distress, questioning the potential and the happiness it brings. So, let me break down three key principles for you to consider.Firstly, the three commandments for a healthy relationship: "I am happy, you are happy, and the relationship is happy." Simplifying it helps us avoid overcomplicating things. Essentially, it's about both partners committing to personal and mutual happiness, aligning their directions.Secondly, the importance of distinguishing personal anxieties from relationship dynamics. Self-projections, those doubts and stories we carry, can heavily influence how we perceive our partner's feelings. It's essential to differentiate between what's truly happening in the relationship and what's our own inner narrative. Finally, core characteristics and values play a crucial role. We often get into relationships for what they bring to us, rather than embracing the traits and values of our partner. Evaluating whether your partner's traits align with what you genuinely desire is key.In essence, it's about being aware of the traits, characteristics, and values at play, understanding the nuances, and making informed decisions about the viability of the relationship. Remember, these reflections might require some introspection and openness to discussing these aspects with your partner. Support the showSet yourself up for relationship success. Salvaging Empire: Sovereignty, Natural Resources, and Environmental Science in the South Atlantic (Cornell University Press, 2023) by Dr. James J. A. Blair probes the historical roots and current predicaments of a twenty-first century settler colony seeking to control an uncertain future through resource management and environmental science. Four decades after a violent 1982 war between the United Kingdom and Argentina reestablished British authority over the Falkland Islands (Las Malvinas in Spanish), a commercial fishing boom and offshore oil discoveries have intensified the sovereignty dispute over the South Atlantic archipelago. Scholarly literature on the South Atlantic focuses primarily on military history of the 1982 conflict. However, contested claims over natural resources have now made this disputed territory a critical site for examining the wider relationship between imperial sovereignty and environmental governance. Dr. Blair argues that by claiming self-determination and consenting to British sovereignty, the Falkland Islanders have crafted a settler colonial protectorate to extract resources and extend empire in the South Atlantic. Responding to current debates in environmental anthropology, critical geography, Atlantic history, political ecology, and science and technology studies, Dr. Blair describes how settlers have asserted indigeneity in dynamic relation with the environment. Salvaging Empire uncovers the South Atlantic's outsized importance for understanding the broader implications of resource management and environmental science for the geopolitics of empire. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose doctoral work focused on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars.
