On August 14th. 2026 ; Fr. Daniel Klimek's homily presents St. Maximilian Kolbe as a fearless missionary of the Immaculate, whose deep love for the Blessed Virgin Mary gave him the courage to defend the Catholic faith, evangelize those opposed to the Church, and remain faithful even through persecution, brutality, and death at Auschwitz. From his encounters with atheists, Freemasons, and unbelievers to his work with magazines, radio, and new technology, Kolbe understood that Christians are called not to retreat from the world, but to enter it with truth, charity, and a desire for conversion. His life is a call to reject fear and compromise. St. Maximilian fought spiritual and cultural opposition through prayer, mobilization, evangelization, sacrifice, and media, always seeking the salvation of souls rather than hatred of his enemies. He showed that true freedom belongs to the person who knows he belongs to Christ through the Immaculate. The homily also challenges Catholics today to sanctify the media. When the culture pressures Christians to remain silent or abandon the faith, St. Maximilian's example says NO. He used the newest means of communication available to proclaim the ancient and unchanging Gospel. His witness calls us to enter today's media courageously, defend the truth without compromise, honor Our Lady, evangelize the culture, and use modern technology for the greater glory of God and the salvation of souls.Readings for August 14th 2026: https://bible.usccb.org/bible/readings/081426.cfm© 2026 Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception. Friends of the Rosary,Today, we celebrate the memorial of St. Maximilian Kolbe, "a martyr of love," as St. Pope Paul VI described him, whooffered his life in exchange for the life of a husband and father of two sons, on August 14, at the German Nazi concentration and death camp of Auschwitz in Poland. The Polish 47-year-old Franciscan Conventual priest was killed by the Nazis with a lethal injection on August 14, 80 years ago.St. Kolbe, the founder of the worldwide evangelization movement, Militia Immaculatae, and a missionary in Japan in the 1930s, faithfully followed the path of Christ's sacrifice and His words in John's Gospel: “No one has a greater love than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends” –that we read today. The priest was arrested in February 1941 on charges of aiding Jews and the Polish underground and was imprisoned in Warsaw. He was deported to the death camp of Auschwitz, Poland, where he was stripped of his Franciscan habit and assigned prisoner number 16670. He was forced to do the most humiliating jobs, such as carrying dead bodies to the crematorium. Nevertheless, he continued his charity and priestly ministry, for which he was subjected to violent beatings by the guards. At the end of July 1941, when a prisoner escaped from Auschwitz, in retaliation, the deputy camp commander picked up 10 men to be starved to death in an underground bunker to deter further escape attempts. When one of the selected men, Franciszek Gajowniczek, cried out, "My wife! My children!", Kolbe volunteered to die in his place, arguing he was a Catholic priest and older than Gajowniczek, 41. The deputy commander accepted the offer. The Polish priest and others were thus locked up in the "starvation bunker" without food and water. There, Kolbe led the prisoners in prayer. Prison guards found him standing or kneeling in the cell and looking calmly at those who entered. After they had been starved and deprived of water for two weeks, only Kolbe remained alive. The prison authorities administered him a lethal injection of carbolic acid. Kolbe is said to have raised his left arm and calmly waited for the injection. Before dying, he pronounced the two words, “Ave Maria”, the final pledge of a life entrusted to the Immaculate Conception. His remains were cremated on 15 August, the feast of the Assumption of Mary.During his visit to Poland in 2016, Pope Francis visited the " starvation bunker " on July 29, where Kolbe breathed his last in Auschwitz. After a moment of silence and reflection, he left, signing the visitors' book with a brief prayer: “Lord, have mercy on your people, Lord, forgive us for so much cruelty”.Ave Maria!Come, Holy Spirit, come!To Jesus through Mary! Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will. Please give us the grace to respond with joy!+ Mikel Amigot w/ María Blanca | RosaryNetwork.com, New YorkEnhance your faith with the new Holy Rosary University app:Apple iOS | New! 8/21/25 - Anthony D'Ambrosio is the writer and director of the new Catholic film “Triumph of the Heart,” which follows St. Maximilian Kolbe's last days in the Nazi death camp of Auschwitz and how he led his fellow inmates, also sentenced to death by starvation, to triumph over their heartless and barbaric jailers. Anthony joins us today to discuss the process of the film's development, his own personal journey to the Catholic church, and why the world needs strong Catholic filmmaking now more than ever. In this second episode of the Fatima Today martyrdom series, hosted by Barb Ernster with Katie Moran, we look at “red martyrdom” giving one's life for Christ. On his feast day, we share the inspiring story of St. Maximilian Kolbe: from his childhood vision of two crowns, one white for purity and one red for martyrdom — to his brave fight against evil through his love for the Blessed Mother. You'll hear about his arrest for helping refugees, his time in Auschwitz, and the moment he offered to die in another man's place. Even in the starvation bunker, his days were filled with prayer, song, and a deep peace that only God can give.   Stay tuned for the next episode — the touching story of Bl. Alexandrina da Costa, the “white martyr,” who offered her whole life to God through suffering.

“Let us remember that love lives through sacrifice and is nourished by giving. Without sacrifice, there is no love.” -St. Maximilian Kolbe. You may believe that in a moment of great peril, you would certainly have the strength offer your life in the place of a family member, but, could you make the ultimate sacrifice for a stranger? It is most appropriate on this year's Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception to tell the story of St. Maximilian Kolbe, who was so ardently devoted to our Blessed Mother. If you want God to fill your heart with the courage of a martyr, this episode of the #BecomeFire Podcast is for you.
