In this episode, Al Roxburgh and Jenny Sinclair talk with Reuben Slife about the challenges of Christian life within the realities of late modernity. Growing up in America's Deep South and beginning in the United Methodist Church tradition, Reuben planned to teach theatre. However, his path took him, via GK Chesterton and the plays of the late St John Paul II, into full communion with the Catholic Church and to life in Steubenville, Ohio, a small town in the American Rust Belt. Reuben finds himself living within an emerging community of Catholic families drawn to building a Christian life together. Reflecting on the dynamics within the town, he describes his experience, both as a Catholic and through his work as an editor of political theology. Reuben explores both the creativity and the tensions around forming Christian life in the midst of a modern Egypt, recognising its harsh categories of self, the state and the market. Drawing on ways of thinking gifted to us from outside the modern West, Reuben is devoted to bringing forward traditions that were vital before the birth of the modern.Reuben Slife is the editor of New Polity Press, in Steubenville, Ohio. New Polity publishes essays, books and podcasts and is a think tank for political theology, dedicated to cultivating the Catholic tradition and fostering a movement to resist the cultural and political trends of the liberal state. Reuben edited and oversaw the translation of Rocco Buttiglione's Modernity's Alternative, on Latin America's “theology of peoples” [teología del pueblo], and currently is working on America in the Mystery of Christ and the Church by David L. Schindler. Do you ever have trouble following rules because you feel like they restrict you in some way? The Lord has given us the Ten Commandments not to take away our freedom but rather to allow us to be truly free. St John Paul II said “freedom consists not in doing what we like, but in doing what we ought” The CCC 2057 states that the Ten Commandments first must be understood in the context of Exodus when God liberates his people from Egypt. By giving the Ten Commandments God is revealing His Will and thus revealing His heart to us. “In making his Will known God reveals himself to his people.” CCC 2059The Catechism explains that it is in the New Covenant that Jesus affirms the validity of the Ten Commandments when he responds to the rich young man to keep the commandments in order to attain eternal life. In a different gospel passage when someone asks Him which one is the greatest commandment He replies you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind and the second is you shall love your neighbor as yourself. In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus not only confirms the commandments, He elevates them. The First three commandments include love of God and the last seven are about love of neighbor. The Ten Commandments I am the Lord your God: you shall not have strange Gods before me.You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.Remember to keep holy the Lord's Day. Honor your father and your mother. You shall not kill. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. You shall covet tour neighbor's wife. You shall not covet your neighbor's goods. The CCC 2071 explains that God has written natural law on the hearts of every human being, but God need to reveal the Ten Commandments because of our fallen human condition. He has given us His Commandments to clearly show how he wants us to live. These commandments can be difficult to follow but “what God commands he makes possible by his grace.“ CCC 2082We live in a culture where some believe that there is no moral absolute. However, if we truly embrace the Ten Commandments as a sign of God's love for us, and not His control, we can pursue the genuine freedom that He created us for. We can become truly free when we follow His Law, which is His Will and also His heart.

Friends of the Rosary, Today, October 22, is the feast day of Saint John Paul II (1920-2005), the charismatic and beloved Polish who was an extraordinary testimony of holiness. He contributed to the fall of communism in Europe, established World Youth Days and the World Meeting of Families, promulgated the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and instituted the Luminous Mysteries. Born in Wadowice, a small city 50 kilometers from Krakow, on May 18, 1920, Karol Józef Wojtyla became Pope in 1978. His exceptional apostolic zeal, particularly for families, young people, and the sick, led him to numerous pastoral visits worldwide during his 27 years of papacy. On May 13, 1981, an attempt on his life was made in Saint Peter's Square. Saved by the maternal hand of the Mother of God, following a lengthy stay in the hospital, he forgave the attempted assassin and intensified his pastoral commitments. John Paul II was beatified in 2011 by Pope Benedict XVI and canonized in 2014 by Pope Francis. “It is Jesus that you seek when you dream of happiness,” he told young people in 2000. “He is waiting for you when nothing else you find satisfies you; he is the beauty to which you are so attracted. It is he who reads in your hearts your most genuine choices.” Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You!St. John Paul II, Pray for Us! Come, Holy Spirit, come! This episode will continue on from the previous, exploring The Lamb's victory over the Dragon, Whore of Babylon and Antichrist. More importantly, we will dwell on the climactic finale of the entire bible: the Wedding feast of The Lamb! Prepare for a ride! Excerpt: "... fact check first: unlike what is presented in popular culture, the antichrist is not actually mentioned in the book of Revelation at all, and flowing from that, there is also no explicit notion that the antichrist is even one particular person / or entity that'll appear at the end of time. While interpretations of these ideas could technically be drawn from scripture, they are to be held lightly. Let's begin by looking at where the term antichrist actually comes from – and for that we turn to the letters of St John. About the antichrist, two significant passages are written: "every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already." Then in his second letter John says "for many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. Such a one is the deceiver and the antichrist." These passages are very indicative of the true nature of the antichrist – the one who denies the incarnation of Jesus – and more especially, the one who denies that God came in the flesh. Pause to think about this - for this is actually quite bizarre. After all, you'd think the anti-Christ would be some great leader who persecutes Christians, deceives the world to sin or simply wages war against love and peace etc. But as it turns out the most damaging opposition to Christian message is the denial of Jesus' humanity – of his fleshliness. The antichrist then, can be understood as an idea, a false idea, a heretical idea, as much as it could be depicted as a singular person in time. St John Paul II's Theology of the Body goes to lengths to explain why denial of Christ's humanity is absolutely toxic to Christianity... What was the original experience of man and woman that St John Paul II said was the “key” to understanding God's plan? Why does the enemy want to “counterfeit” the sacraments, and marriage in particular? Cale deals with these questions and more in this final episode of the miniseries.
