Jesus said that the whole Old Testament spoke of Him. Jesus is in the pages and promises from Genesis to Malichi. So Christmas too is in the Old Testament, if even as a whisper. Today Dr. John looks at the Day of Atonement and points to the coming of our Saviour. There is an overlap of truth from Leviticus 16 and the Christmas account from John's gospel. In both, we see the presence of God among us to bring redemption. Christmas From the Beginning of Time: We can't understand Christmas by beginning with Mary and Joseph and the appearance of an angel. Christmas is a part of the grand program of God working itself out in history. To understand Christmas rightly, we must see it as God's redemption promise beginning in Genesis and woven throughout the Old Testament. Christmas is more than angels, shepherds and Magi. Christmas is a promise kept; a promise meant for you and I today.
Pastor Dave York reads from Malichi. Here is the big idea: God calls us to revere Him, be faithful to Him, and give Him our best.
We shouldn't be satisfied with only half of a good story. And yet with Christmas, that is what most of us do. We enter the story of Jesus without much consideration of the story God has already spoken. We begin at Bethlehem, but God's story about Jesus begins much earlier. In today's message, Dr. John reminds and instructs us about the Old Testament being all about Jesus. Genesis to Malichi is God's story to us about the Saviour to come. As Christmas approaches, let's consider the whole narrative of Jesus.Christmas From the Beginning of Time: We can't understand Christmas by beginning with Mary and Joseph and the appearance of an angel. Christmas is a part of the grand program of God working itself out in history. To understand Christmas rightly, we must see it as God's redemption promise beginning in Genesis and woven throughout the Old Testament. Christmas is more than angels, shepherds and Magi. Matthew 17:9, 10-13 St John Paul II said the key to understand all reality is the loss of fatherhood. The first reading that refers to what the prophet Malichi said: “How awesome are you, Elijah, in your wondrous deeds! You were destined, it is written, in time to come to put an end to wrath before the day of the LORD, To turn back the hearts of fathers toward their sons, and to re-establish the tribes of Jacob. Advent invites us to ponder the reason behind the mystery of the incarnation, of God's coming to us in his Beloved Son. Jesus is the one who has come to turn our rebellious hearts back to our Heavenly Father.
Episode 2 of Ruck up Buttercup hosted by Deployed Love Ruck up Buttercup is a podcast hosted by Deployed Love with Co-Hosts Sabrina Johannes, Kim Clagg, Sierra Cortez, and Ashley Brown. Join us in a fun conversation each month, about a different topic, and how it works into our lives as military spouses, military children, and friends. On this episode of Ruck up Buttercup Sabrina and Ashley are joined with Vince and Donna Guzman from My Beloved Marriage Ministries. My Beloved Marriage Ministries (MB) was established in Jan 2000 at their local church in Berwyn, IL. MB is a 501 c3 Non-Profit Religious Organization. Our Vision: To equip married couples with God's plan for Marriage (Oneness Gen 2:24) & Parenting (godly offspring - Malichi 2:15) Mission Verse: Matthew 7:24-25: "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and acts upon them may be compared to a wise man who built his house upon the rock. And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat against that house, and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded upon the rock." They accomplish this via our 7 Pillars (attached) MB Cafe, MB Rock Groups, MB Date Nights, National Events, MB Sunday School, MB Marriage Discipleship and MB Community Outreach. Matthew 1:1-17 Series: Advent 2020 #1 I have never preached a series of advent/Christmas messages before. For a number of years I've taken the four advent Sundays and connected four confession exhortations or communion meditations, but never four sermons. I prefer keeping the course through a book of the Bible, at least up until the Sunday immediately preceding Christmas. Even then many times I try to link the providentially appointed next paragraph with the holiday theme. But it's 2020. If the only thing that doesn't change is change itself, then could we say that change feels like the most normal thing? That obviously breaks down, and quickly, but I thought, why not? Revelation 17 and 18 go together, so pausing in between is sort of like parking on the downhill side. After these Christmas sermons and some sermons on our worship and liturgy, we'll pick up in the Apocalypse and speed toward the finish sometime in the spring, Lord willing and the 'rona don't rise. So, four whole messages for advent. Advent (from Latin *adventus*), as we've learned, means *coming*. Some people advent naturally, others of us have learned to appreciate the discipline of the season, and even how the annual month of conscious re-waiting for celebrating Christ's incarnation (His first coming) orients us for Christ's parousia (second coming). Not everyone gets excited about the Christmas holiday, and fine, but every Christian should be getting ready for the great day of the Lord. What I'd like to do in these messages is consider some Christmas *meta*, not just sub details, but some of the overarching narrative that gives a pattern or structure for our beliefs. Christmas is a message about the coming of God's Son, and Christmas gives meaning to God's people. To start that, I want to take a look at a part of the story that most people skip, or skim. We're going to take a look at, and a look through, the genealogy of Jesus in the first chapter of Matthew. If your family reads Scripture on Christmas morning, you probably start in Matthew 1:18, "Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way" (or you read Luke 2 instead). And yet the first verses of Matthew's gospel, the first verses of the New Testament are, "The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ" (1:1). There are (at least) four large-scale encouragements, applications, plot points, object lessons, etc., in this genealogy. Don't get anxious about how bored you're going to be, at least wait a little before deciding you'd rather quietly disagree about the millennium. In fact, the first lesson is just that: **wait**. Waiting is an appropriate subject for a heavenly host of reasons, including that this is the first Sunday of advent, so it is the furthest Sunday from Christmas. Christmas is on Friday this year, so we're almost as far away as we could be. We are at least post-Thanksgiving, which makes it lawful to talk about the next festivity, but it is also still *November*. Waiting is also appropriate because 2020 has demanded it. “Fifteen days to flatten the curve” was **259** days ago. Lockdown deadlines approached, pressure built, and then deadlines were extended, restrictions added, inconsistencies multiplied, apparently arbitrary decisions magnified. We turned some anticipation energy toward elections, and what a sinus headache with your head in a vice on a plane climbing altitude that turned out to be. Whence comest relief? We can't crescendo forever, right? I like movies the same way I recommend marital engagements: short and sweet. Anticipation can be fun, if it doesn't go on forever. I appreciate Melville's work in _Moby Dick_, how he so successfully gave me a sense of how tedious months on a ship in the the middle of the ocean would feel, even as I felt that way wading through page after page reading about it. Solomon similarly nailed not only the content about vain repetitions, he captured it in his style. Christmas is *a lot* about waiting *a lot*. As a kid, my sister and I poured over the J.C. Penny catalog and crafted our lists and presented them to our parents with sufficient time for ordering without Amazon's overnight delivery. Then we'd go back to the catalog to visualize the acquisition of our lists into real-time use. That was Christmas to us, shallow, but not altogether wrong. God's people waited *generationally* for The Gift. They weren't working from a wish list, they were working from *divine promises*, from God the Father giving His Word to patriarchs that He would send a Savior-King-Son. We do not have time to sit in their waiting shoes, but we can be encouraged by the Scripture written beforehand. We should read the Scripture that starts the Christian story, a family story, a royal store, a sinful story, a *long* story. > The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. > > Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram, and Ram the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon, and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of David the king. > > And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah, and Solomon the father of Rehoboam, and Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asaph, and Asaph the father of Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah, and Uzziah the father of Jotham, and Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, and Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, and Manasseh the father of Amos, and Amos the father of Josiah, and Josiah the father of Jechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon. > > And after the deportation to Babylon: Jechoniah was the father of Shealtiel, and Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, and Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, and Abiud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor, and Azor the father of Zadok, and Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud, and Eliud the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ. > > So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ fourteen generations. (Matthew 1:1–17, ESV) We probably know enough of the Bible to appreciate a lot of what's here, and we also can spare a little time to learn some more about it. I mean, you're not going to get these verses on a greeting card. I pray that after four weeks considering these verses that we will never be able to unsee these points, and at least introduce your reading in 1:18ff with "After waiting many generations for the Christ...." Matthew 1:1 begins with the *biblos geneseos* (Βίβλος γενέσεως Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ), the "genesis," the "roll of birth," the history of origin. While there are three paragraphs in the body of the list, there is an intro sentence and a conclusion. Unlike the genealogy that Luke provides going back through Mary's side of the family to Adam, Matthew starts with Abraham down to Joseph, Jesus' earthly father. Matthew's focus from Abraham through David to Jesus has a crucial connection which will be the subject for another sermon. For now, remember that both were given promises, both were called to believe, and *neither* of them saw the fulfillment in their lifetimes. They had to *wait*. God called Abram to another land and said, "I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing" (Genesis 12:2), so that "in you all the families of the earth will be blessed" (12:3). By Genesis 15 Abram was still without a child, and the LORD not only reaffirmed that Abram would have his own son, the LORD also said, "know for certain that your offspring will be sojourners in a land that is not theirs and will be servants there, and they will be afflicted for four hundred year" (15:13). After Abram's sin with Hagar, God said, "I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout the generations for an everlasting covenant" (17:7). Then Paul explained further, "Now the promises were made to Abraham and his offspring. It does not say "And to offsprings," referring to many, but referring t one, "And to your offspring," who is *Christ*" (Galatians 3:16). It turns out that Abram was *42 generations* (or more) from Christ, over **2000** years. Isaac was a miracle, so Jacob, then Judah and his brothers (Matthew 1:2), but those only began the 400 year exile in Egypt. Abraham lived by faith, believing the LORD (Genesis 15:6), and *waiting*. The genealogy in Matthew gives attention to David due to a promise God made. That promise is summarized in Psalm 89 (see the promise in context in 2 Samuel 7:4-17): > You have said, 'I have made a covenant with my chosen one; I have sworn to David my servant: I will establish your offspring forever, and build your throne for all generations." (3-4) Even the book of Revelation refers to Jesus as the Root of David, the one who has conquered and coming (Revelation 5:5; 22:16). But according to Matthew 1:17 there were 14 generations between Abraham and David, then 14 more before the Babylonian captivity where Israel was **70** years waiting on the promised one, and then there were another 14 generations after Israel went back to Israel before Christ was born. How many believers felt as if they were in Nomans Land, *waiting*. They waited for immediate deliverance from foreign enemies, deliverance from crooked kings and unjust judges and polluted priests, deliverance from the burden of the law and the sacrificial system, deliverance from physical and relational pains. There were over 400 years of silence from God between Malichi and Matthew, between the last prophet of the Old Testament and John the Baptist. And then, the Christ came! But(!), He came quietly, privately, remotely, innocently. It would take another 30 years before Jesus was announced to the public, three more years of mixed reviews, and then He was put to death. How was any of that a relief to all the built up pressure? How could a baby born in Bethlehem possibly be what they were waiting for? But He *was*. > Behold the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel (which means, God with us). (Matthew 1:23) His name will be "Jesus for he will save his people from their sins" (verse 21). "All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet" (verse 22), in fact, by many prophets. Christmas is more than fun surprises of gifts and about promised deliverance by grace. But the package says in big letters: **Some Anticipation Required**. This is how God worked before the first advent, we ought not be surprised if He calls us to exercise waiting muscles before the second advent. All of this was written that we might have *hope*. Not only is God, by attribute, the God of endurance (Romans 15:5), He gives hope and joy and peace in believing so that we may abound in hope (Romans 15:13). Many Gentiles are being brought to rejoice in Christ, the same Christ promised to the patriarchs, many of whom are written by name in the genealogy. > The root of Jesse will come, even he who arises to rule the Gentiles. In him will the Gentiles hope. (Romans 15:12) # Conclusion Our Christmas Quick! needs are so high that we don't even have time to wait two or three years for the wise men to show up in our nativity scenes. At least we can sing some songs with minor chords, “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.” Jesus holds it all together (Hebrews 1:3) for *generations*. In peace and in war, in prosperity and in captivity, in summers and winters, in harvests and hardships, in sickness and in health, over lifetimes and centuries. So *wait for the Lord*. > It will be said on that day, > “Behold, this is our God; we have > waited for him, that he might save us. > This is the LORD; we have waited > for him; > let us be glad and rejoice > in his salvation.” > (Isaiah 25:9, ESV) ---------- ## Charge Because of how God made the world, we cannot skip genealogies. We can skip reading them, though maybe we shouldn't. But we can't skip being *in* them. Some who came before you have been waiting to see what you would do when your time came. Others who come after you will look back to see how you ran the race, including how well you *waited* for the Lord. ## Benediction: > May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Romans 15:5–6, ESV)
ONCE UPON A GENE - EPISODE 011 Rollin' With Spina Bifida Joining me today is Whitney Stohr, a master advocate for her son and others in the community. There's a lot to learn from her family and a lot of good information in our conversation. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS Tell me about you son Malachi He is almost 21 months old, adorable, the most social little guy you'll ever meet and he has Spina Bifida. Spina Bifida means that in-utero, very early in a pregnancy the spine of the baby doesn't form like it should. As a result, when the child is born, there's an open area on their spine. During the development later into the pregnancy, the nerves that go down the spine are open to the fluid inside of the placenta and to the air when they're born, causing damage to the nerves. It can cause numerous related disabilities, usually impairs mobility and often leads to Hydrocephalus, or water on the brain. Hydrocephalus is caused by the Arnold-Chiari malformation, which is where the spine is open to the air and it tugs the spinal column down, brings the brain down to the upper part of the neck and blocks the fluid that naturally occurs on the brain. This causes a buildup of fluid on the brain which requires surgery to place a device in the brain to help drain it. When did you find out that Malachi had Spina Bifida? We got our diagnosis just after my second trimester ultrasound where everything looked great and my regular OB didn't see anything. I had the quad screening and that showed an open neuro tube defect which is what Spina Bifida is. They brought me back in and sent me to a specialty clinic to do a high resolution ultrasound. I went into research mode to find out everything I possibly could about the condition. I feel like I didn't miss a beat in trying to determine what the next steps were. Tell me about Malachi being born. Malachi was born in January 2018 at 35 weeks. I was living in Yakima, about 2-3 hours away from Seattle. We were flown over by medical flight in the middle of the night and taken to the University of Washington Medical Center and rushed into the operating room for a c-section. They couldn't get the epidural to work, so they had to put me under. It was traumatic because I wasn't sure if I'd wake up and even have a baby. They put me to sleep, I woke up in my hospital room and my husband told me Malachi was fine, in the NICU and being prepared for a transfer. They wheeled him up in his incubator, I got to meet him for the first time, say hello and say goodbye and send him on his way. Malachi was taken to Seattle Children's Hospital and had surgery to close up his spine. For the first surgery, they brought in a couple teams to pull the muscle and skin and literally zip up his spine. If the spine isn't closed up soon enough, there's a risk of infection so the goal was to get him into surgery as soon as possible. He was born in the middle of the night at 12:38am and had the surgery mid-afternoon the same day. Malachi spent the first eight months in the hospital. He had five other surgeries in this time. He had spinal surgery on day one and brain surgery on day two to correct the Hydrocephalus. He was born with congenital heart defects, so he also had open heart surgery at two months old. You're living in Yakima, so where are you staying and what are you doing for eight months? My husband had to go back to work, so he was living in Yakima and commuting, working Monday through Friday and then coming to Seattle on the weekends. When Malachi was in the NICU and I wasn't allowed to stay with him, we were at the Ronald McDonald House, which was a godsend. Once he was moved down to a room, I lived in the hospital with him. It was a long journey to bring Malachi home. After his heart surgery, he started having a lot of trouble breathing, so before he could go home we had a tracheotomy and he became ventilator dependent. Part of our going home plan involved weeks and weeks of training on how to keep him alive. We were terrified to bring him home. In August 2018, we brought Malachi home to Yakima for the first time and it really kicked in then just how challenging it would be to be outside the hospital, trying to live a somewhat normal life and how many obstacles there were. Since then, it's been a learning opportunity every day. How do you get out of the house with Malachi and all his stuff and get to an appointment? Not very well. It's a mess. I follow all these other medical moms on Instagram and a lot of their kids have trachs and feeding tubes and I feel like they're my heroes and they're so much better at it than me. I feel like a hot mess all the time. Malachi has to have a giant stroller, which I call the magic school bus. It's a sit and stand stroller made for two kids, I put his ventilator on the bottom where a toddler would stand and strap it on with bungee cords. We put his oxygen tank on the bottom and we travel with a giant red emergency backpack that has all of his spare equipment in it. We also have all the regular baby stuff like diapers and food. We attach his feeding tube and cords to the stroller with a clamp to keep from rolling them over. How is he thriving so far with his new therapist? Is he in a co-op with Birth to Three or is he still too young? No co-ops or group therapies yet. We are hoping to, but the challenge right now is that it's cold and flu season and we're nervous to have him around other people. We'll be going into isolation in November until April or May. Hopefully by spring we can get him in a playgroup through the therapy center with other kids with disabilities and we're looking forward to that. Can you tell me a little bit about what you've learned about being an advocate for Malachi medically and in general? I'm such a loud mouth and always have been. I've never been afraid to tell people to stick it when they need to hear it. That probably suits me well in this case. It has been different because I don't have a medical background and there's been a huge learning curve and I'm still learning every day, but as medical parents we can be an advocate in two ways. We can be an advocate for our kid, which is a given. We can also use our experience and the knowledge we gain to be an advocate for the community and for all kids and all people with disabilities or medical diagnosis. The disabled community is considered the largest minority group in the US, so whether we have disabilities or not, if we're going to be advocates for anything we have to include advocacy for disabilities. Opening my mind to that world has shown me how much privilege I have to not have to be aware of the issues that affect the disability community. I didn't have to be worried about good sidewalks or accessible parking spaces or accessible restrooms because it didn't affect me. A big part of this advocacy has been educating myself on these vast issues that affect people and kids with disabilities. It's been a practice in humility for me because I've had to accept that I was naive to these issues, but as an advocate it was a kick in the pants. It's important for medical parents to use their voice and to get involved however they can. There are ways that every single one of us can get involved and because we have this unique experience, it's so important that we all do get involved. Can you tell me about the new organization you are a member of now? It's called Parent Institute for Engagement (PIE) ran through Washington State, the same program that runs the early intervention services statewide. They wanted to get more parents engaged and they wanted to give them the skills they need to advocate. This is not just advocacy for your child, but advocacy for the community, focused on a broader level. It's a year long leadership program, with seven people in my cohort and we meet once a month alongside the state interagency coordinating committee, which are government appointed people and representatives from different agencies. They come together once a month to talk about improvements, problems or how to make recommendations to state agencies on areas that need to be addressed. We have our meetings and learn specific skills. Last month, we learned how to tell our story for an advocacy purpose. Then we attend the meeting with the SICC where we get to meet all of the representatives and hear about ongoing problems. PIE is a group of really dedicated parents who want to be active advocates in their community and it's so fantastic. Anyone can apply, so I encourage other parents who want to be advocates and who want to learn those skills to apply. What are your advocacy goals over the next year? I want to get more involved. Before Malachi, I didn't know much about disability issues or even issues happening in our own state and there are a lot of issues. I hope that through the PIE program and through other ways I've gotten involved in the community because of Malachi, that I make connections and get involved in the programs and campaigns that these groups are leading. Hopefully I can add my voice to the masses and we can make some change. How hasn't having Malachi changed you? How do you feel it's changed your entire family bringing someone like Malachi into the world? Having a kid like this, being in and out of the hospital, seeing how much these kids go through just so they can wake up every day with a gigantic smile on their face is really profound how it affects you. I think it affects everyone you share your story with, which is why we do share our story. It's made me more focused, more of a serious and driven person. It's made me incredibly passionate about causes that are close to my heart. For the rest of my family as well, we've become very involved in issues related to Malachi's conditions. We've become a lot more outspoken about issues affecting kids like Malachi or kids with any other condition. Overall, your sense of empathy grows. Sunday evening sermon from Jay Don Poindexter
Message from Jeff Hensley on August 28, 2013
Session 03 of why study bible prophecy. We look at what many scholars have called "THE SUPER SIGN". It is the nation of Israel and how all of our understanding of the End Time scenario is played out in our understanding of the Second Coming of Jesus. We will examine what many of the prophets pointed to. We will overlay these texts and we see it is centered on Jerusalem and Israel. Zechariah 12 & 14, Michah 1, Malichi 1, Joel 3 and a host of others. We continue to define terms of "That Day" and others. It matters what you think about the End Times. Shalom, Keith
What do we have to learn from the prophet Malichi?
