Less than 1% of landowners in the Maasai Mara Conservancies are women. Aside from harmful gender norms such as early childhood marriages, female genital mutilation, and teenage pregnancies, these are over-normalized in the community. In episode 103 of The Gradient Podcast, Daniel Bashir speaks to Dr. Kathleen Fisher.As the director of DARPA's Information Innovation Office (I2O), Dr. Kathleen Fisher oversees a portfolio that includes most of the agency's AI-related research and development efforts, including the recent AI Forward initiative. AI Forward explores new directions for AI research that will result in trustworthy systems for national security missions. This summer, roughly 200 participants from the commercial sector, academia, and the U.S. government attended workshops that generated ideas to inform DARPA's next phase of AI exploratory projects. Dr. Fisher previously served as a program manager in I2O from 2011 to 2014. As a program manager, she conceptualized, created, and executed programs in high-assurance computing and machine learning, including Probabilistic Programming for Advancing Machine Learning (PPAML), making building ML applications easier. She was also a co-author of a recent paper about the threats posed by large language models.Since 2018, DARPA has dedicated over $2 billion in R&D funding to AI research. At any event, the team of people making it all happen is the most important foundation for success. Drawing from Patrick Lencioni's The Working Genius, the team at Handbid discuss the six different types of working styles and how to utilize them to maximize profitability. Typically people are innately gifted in two types, resistant to two types, and competent in the remaining types. Here is a breakdown of the working geniuses as applied to running a charitable event: People with the Genius of Wonder push organizations towards change with a natural gift for pondering the possibilities in every situation. At planning meetings for events, they are constantly questioning how the program could be better in the future.  Those with the Genius of Invention thrive on creatively solving problems and drafting plans to bring ideas into being. They love to think outside the box to make the impossible become a reality.  Team members with the Genius of Discernment can intuitively discriminate between good and bad ideas and provide important checks and balances. They are especially good at pattern recognition and trend identification, ensuring that every aspect of the event aligns with purpose. The Genius of Galvanizing usually manifests in team cheerleaders, those who are able to rally the troops with inspiration and a call to action. These people excel at coordinating volunteers, recruiting, and running check-in. People with the Genius of Enablement provide encouragement and assistance for ideas and projects. These are the helpers and customer service team members who help set up and tear down an event.  Finally, those with the Genius of Tenacity push projects to completion to achieve desired results, often doing the jobs no one else wants to do. They are all about the execution and are therefore great team members for acquiring auction items.  An assessment of each team members' working geniuses allows leaders to place people in optimal roles for their strengths. It can also reveal gaps in the team that need to be filled as it takes all six types for a team to function well. From the moment Alexandra Van Houtte first told me about her newly launched platform in 2016, describing it as Google for fashion, I knew she was onto something. Since then TagWalk, the website she founded and is the CEO of, has grown by leaps and bounds and has become a linchpin platform for anyone working in the fashion industry. It is the first runway image keyword search engine in existence. In a nutshell, the former stylist's assistant created a site that, in just a few simple clicks, makes it possible for stylists to whittle down their sartorial selections for fashion shoots or mood boards from the thousands of catwalk images, lookbooks, and street style shots taken every season. It is also the perfect tool for fashion journalists and editors who are obliged to cull together images for those never-ending “top trend” texts, as the platform allows users to search for images by keyword, colour, season, brand, and more. Tagwalk also offers a variety of features that make it easy to save, share, and organize images. In addition to its popularity with fashion professionals, Tagwalk's democratic nature has made it a widespread tool for your average fashionista. As it allows visitors to the site the chance to explore the latest trends, discover new designers, find inspiration for their own personal style and create seasonal wish lists of the key pieces she wants to invest in. My conversation with Alexandra really gets into the nitty-gritty of what it takes to get a start-up off the ground, how best to bring on investors and what skill sets a successful leader needs. As always Alexandra is honest and open with her answers, not pulling any punches when it comes to the hard questions about revenue streams, scaling her business and her hiring practices.
