The Light Shine Theory (Episode 306) by Moose, Ceaz, Dona, & Joz

Shining your light is a result of your depth in Christ. It reflects a deep spiritual truth in scripture. Letting our light shine is a mandate from the Lord and is pertinent in reaching a broken and lost world.

Sharing our faith should be exciting to us. It is exciting. When we consider the free grace God gave us through His Son, telling others about Jesus should be on our priority list every day. For whatever reason, many find it very awkward to talk to others about Jesus. We can talk about just about anything else, though. That's why it's crucial that we look at sharing the gospel as an intentional thing we do. Intentionality is a great way to overcome our hesitancy, and let's be honest, sometimes fear keeps us from sharing. Truth is, each personality requires a customized approach to sharing about Jesus. Some are outgoing and others are shy. A blogger for God TV has written that he admired a friend who told every seatmate on every plane he'd been in about Jesus.The blogger went on to write that “Even if my fellow passengers desperately wanted to know Christ, they likely couldn't even get my attention with a jackhammer drill or a pie in the face.” Kind of funny and also kind of sad, also very common. Matthew 16:24 says, “Then Jesus said to His disciples, ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.'” So, if we're looking for ways to overcome our mediocre gospel sharing, what can we do? Let's look at a few tips. The first is prayer. Get honest with God and tell Him you're not so great at evangelism. I mean, He already knows, anyway. Ask Him specifically to give you both opportunities and an intentional plan for communicating the best news anyone will ever hear.Two, plan, think ahead. Are you a person who's good at conversation? Go over a mental checklist that provides you with enough scripture and short sentences to make your pitch when the time comes. However, if you're not outgoing, maybe you're a writer. Consider communicating with a card to let the person know you're thinking about him or her. Play to your strengths, not your weaknesses. Number three, listen before you talk. How many times do we jump into a conversation or meeting without taking a breath? Train yourself to be quiet for a bit until you hear where the other person is coming from. You'll learn about your friend or acquaintance, and you can then think through the best way to approach them about the saving gift of Jesus. But also, don't just wait for your turn to talk. Hear them. Meet them where they are, and listen to the Holy Spirit to see how you can speak Jesus into that person's life. Very few of us are Billy Graham. That doesn't mean we can't share the gospel. Somebody's depending on it. Let's pray.Father, whatever our personality and our experiences, give us a passion for loving unbelievers and caring about their well-being. In Luke 8:16–18, Jesus says no one lights a lamp just to hide it, but to shine for everyone to see, and He warns us to pay attention to how we listen. In the context of the parable of the sower, this means when God's Word takes root in us, it grows and bears fruit—but if we ignore it or hide it, even what we think we have will slip away. The fruit Jesus promises isn't stuff or success, but the fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, and more—that shines out of us and points others to Him. God already knows everything about us, even our flaws, and still loves us as His children, so why would we hide His light? Sometimes I feel like we are living in a Charles Dickens novel, "It was the best of times and the worst of times..." As disciples of Christ we can defiantly see that times are getting harder. However there are also some great things happening as well. For example, never before has humanity had the ability to communicate with the rest of the world without a middleman. Also for us Orthodox Mormons we can be a little more bold in proclaiming who we are than those who came before us to keep the religion alive. Today I have on a family who is taking advantage of both of those things. On this episode I sit down with Jeff, Vanessa, & Sharis Alldredge. They have just started a brand-new Youtube channel which is going to give viewers an inside look at their family as they go about their everyday life homesteading in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Before we finish our study and thoughts on Luke 8, I want us to go back to verse 16, where after Jesus shared the parable of the Sower, the Seed and the Soil, He makes this statement: "No one, when he has lit a lamp, covers it with a vessel or puts it under a bed, but sets it on a lampstand, that those who enter may see the light.”  And then in the rest of this chapter, He proceeded to manifest that light on a stormy sea, delivering a demon possessed man, healing a poor hopeless woman, and bringing a 12-year-old girl back to life! Today, I want to talk about letting the Light of Jesus Christ shine through you!  There is no place on planet Earth, there is not anyone who is too far away for Jesus to love and care for and touch. But they must come in contact with Jesus, with His love, and with His Person. And it is only through believers today that this can happen.   Today, Jesus is seated at the right hand of the Father in heaven. But remember that in John 14:12, Jesus said to His disciples, "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.” How is that possible? When Jesus was on Earth, He could only be in one place at one time physically. If He was in Bethlehem, He couldn't be in Jerusalem. If He was in Nazareth, He couldn't be in Bethany. He could only be in one place at one time. If He was in Gadara healing a demon possessed man, He couldn't be in Capernaum helping and healing people there.   But today, while Jesus is seated in heaven, He lives in every believer (Colossians 1:27)!  This means that wherever a believer is, there can be manifest the presence and power of Jesus Christ. That is why when I walk through my neighborhood or I'm walking down the dirt streets in a village in a foreign country, I'm praying continuously for everyone in every house or hut. In my neighborhood, I've learned and memorized the names of almost all my immediate neighbors, and I am praying for them by name. I'm asking the Lord to meet their needs and that God's grace, and His wisdom will be upon them, and if they need salvation, their eyes will be open to Who Jesus is. Not a religion, but a Savior Who they can have a relationship with in an intimate and personal way! Wherever you are, you are the Light of the world! We should not hide it under a basket or a bed but put it on a lampstand so that everyone in that house can see because of that Light and be guided by that Light and not be stumbling around in the darkness.   You and I carry the only hope they have, as Jesus, the Light of the world shines in us and through us! How do they see this Light? It is when we have been knocked down and we are hurting as we go through a difficult time, when everything falls out from underneath us, instead of griping and complaining and blaming everybody, but we respond with His peace and joy and confidence that despite the pain everything will work together for good! We admit that it is hard and difficult, but we are sure that His grace is sufficient, and we will make it through! And then when they ask us how we can have this peace, we can testify and tell them about Jesus Who is with us in the storm! And they see the manifestation of Jesus in our life! (2 Corinthians 4).   Just this week on Christmas Eve, one of my dearest friends, Elaine Brugh, went to be with the Lord. I was able to pray with her and her children over the phone just before she passed. Even over the phone, 300 miles away I could sense the presence of the Lord as I heard her sweet voice say very weakly, “Thank you”. Yesterday I was able to minister to her husband, Henry, who is in deep sorrow over saying an earthly good-bye to his precious wife of 65 years. I'll never forget what he said as we talked about her life and passing. He said, the greatest joy in his and her life together was bringing precious souls to Jesus!
