Our discussion with COL (R) L. Scott Lingamfelter, author of Desert Redleg and Yanks in Blue Berets. L. Scott Lingamfelter was born in Richmond, VA. He then attended the Virginia Military Institute, graduating as a Distinguished Military Graduate, and commissioned in the Army as a Field Artilleryman in 1973. As a combat artilleryman with the 1st Infantry Division during Operation Desert Storm, he helped plan and execute the largest field artillery assault on enemy forces since World War II. He was then selected to command the 6th - 37th FA BN in South Korea. After many assignments worldwide, including Germany, South Korea, and the Middle East, he rose to the rank of Colonel. Following his service in numerous combat units, the Defense Intelligence Agency, as a Political-Military Officer in the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency, and as a senior advisor on Special Access Programs to the Secretary of the Army, the Chief of Staff of the Army, and the Vice Chief of Staff of the Army, he concluded his military career as Military Assistant to the Director, Operational Test and Evaluation of the Office of the Secretary of Defense. He retired in 2001 after 28 years of active duty service. Since retirement he gained significant experience in the war-torn Middle East as a US Army Military Observer with the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization, working with both Observer Group Syria and Observer Group Lebanon in the midst of armed turmoil. He has also worked for the private sector focused on strategic planning in support of the senior leadership for the US Missile Defense Agency in Washington, D.C. Additionally, he has worked in the emergency management, homeland security, and border security arena in support of Federal agencies, states, and localities. Elected to the Virginia House of Delegates from 2002 to 2018 representing Prince William and Fauquier Counties, he was a prominent voice for both fiscal and social conservatism in the General Assembly. Since retiring from the General Assembly, he authored his first book, Desert Redleg: Artillery Warfare in the First Gulf War (University Press of Kentucky, 2020) and a second book Yanks in Blue Berets: American UN Peacekeeping in the Middle East that will be released on 4 July 2023 (University Press of Kentucky). He has started another book on reviving the revolutionary spirit of America's founding fathers in today's culture. Colonel Lingamfelter routinely contributes to the commentary page of The Washington Times on a range of political and national security topics.

In 2001 he graduated from the University of Central Florida(2017 NCAA Football National Champs). He has had many opportunities to gain efficiency at PCS'ing over his 20 years of active federal service but considers himself luckiest to have once Commanded a Donkey and a Goat. He has been in the seat as FA Branch Chief for one year. His next stop is Army War College. LTC(P) Stephen Walker was commissioned from the United States Military Academy in 1999. He has had many opportunities to serve in many FA formations over his 22 years of active federal service. He most recently served as the commander of 2-362FA at FT Bliss, TX prior to assuming duties as the FA Branch Chief for OPMD. He will remain in the position for an additional year before attending Senior Service College in 2022. MAJ Elliot J. Garrett entered the United States Army in 2002 and deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom III. In 2007 MAJ Garrett completed Officer Candidate School and commissioned in the Field Artillery. He has served with 5-3 FA, 17th Fires Brigade, 2-11 FA, 2 SBCT, 25 ID, 1-30th FA and 2-2 FA. He has also served as Analysis Branch Chief for the Joint and Army Experimentation Division (JAED), Concept Development and Learning Directorate (CDLD), Army Capabilities Integration Center (ARCIC). MAJ Garrett graduated from the University of California, Riverside with a BA in Philosophy, and has an MBA from the College of William and Mary. MAJ Garrett has also deployed to Regional Command-South, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Col Michael Roach, commander of the 12th Marine Regiment, Okinawa Japan discusses current operations. A native of Brooklyn NY was commissioned in May 1996. Col Roach has commanded at the battery, battalion, and brigade levels over the course of his career. He has deployed in support of Exercise Native Fury in Kuwait, Operation Enduring Freedom in Southwest Asia, Operation Anaconda in Afghanistan, Operation Iraqi Freedom I, Operation Iraqi and Freedom II. He also supported combat operations in Iraq, Syria, and Yemen. He participated in Humanitarian Relief Operations in Mississippi and Louisiana in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Col Roach's awards include the Bronze Star, the Combat Action Ribbon, and 7 sea service deployment ribbons. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Tulane University, a Master of Science Degree from Kansas State University, and a Masters in National Security from the US Army War College.

COL(Ret) L. Scott Lingamfelter, author of the recently published Desert Redleg, discusses his experiences with 1ID DIVARTY during Operation Desert Storm. During Operation Desert Storm, 1ID DIVARTY controlled the equivalent of 17 FA Battalions, planning and executing some of the largest fire plans the US Army has conducted since WWII. COL(Ret) L. Scott Lingamfelter served as the Executive Officer for 1ID DIVARTY during Operation Desert Storm. Prior to that assignment he had served as the 1ID DIVARTY Operations Officer. During his active duty military career he rose to the rank of Colonel with his last assignment serving as the Military Assistant to the Director, Operational Test and Evaluation of the Office of the Secretary of Defense. He was commissioned from the Virginia Military Institute as a distinguished military graduate. He is a graduate of the US Army Command and General Staff College, the US Armed Forces Staff College, and the US Army War College, where he served as President of his class. He retired after 28 years of active service.
A candid discussion on the performance of the fire support arm and what fire supporters can do better to support their Maneuver counterpart with COL Michael Simmering, the Commander of the Operations Group at NTC, Fort Irwin, CA. COL Simmering most recently served as the Brigade Commander for 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division from July 2017 until June 2019. As a Brigade Commander, COL Simmering deployed in support of Operation Atlantic Resolve in support of US Army Europe and Operation Spartan Shield in support of US Army Central Command. COL Simmering has served in all key and developmental positions of an Armor Officer and has had multiple combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. COL Simmering’s military education includes the Armor Officer Basic Course, Armor Officer Advanced Course, Command and General Staff College, and the Joint Advanced Warfighting School, National Defense University. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Engineering Management from the United States Military Academy as well as Master’s degrees from Kansas State University and the National Defense University.
LTG Richard P. Formica, US Army (Retired), President of the Capitol Cannoneer Chapter serves as the host of this podcast featuring MG Erik Peterson, HQDA, G8, Force Development.
