The Cognitive Crucible is a forum that presents different perspectives and emerging thought leadership related to the information environment. The opinions expressed by guests are their own, and do not necessarily reflect the views of or endorsement by the Information Professionals Association. During this episode, US Army Major Michael Zequeira discusses his Army Command and General Staff research entitled: the Effects of Social Media on Military Recruiting. More and more Americans receive information from social media. This work looks at the effects of social media's rise on U.S. Army recruiting. The primary research question was “Is the increased reliance on social media for information negatively affecting the U.S. Army's ability to recruit?” The secondary research questions were “What role do foreign mis, mal, and disinformation play in decreasing the propensity to serve in the Army of the United States population?” and “How do the negative effects of social media on mental health affect the Army's ability to meet its' recruiting goal?” The researcher answered these questions through a hermeneutics approach, analyzing existing research and correlating it to the past 10 years of recruiting trends. The researcher supplemented this by conducting open coding of videos on YouTube to assess the narratives portrayed based on various Army-related keywords. Based on this research, the increase in information speed of social media allows foreign adversaries to perpetuate mis, mal, and disinformation at speeds that decrease trust in the U.S. Government and Army. The well-documented negative effects of excessive social media use on mental health are decreasing the qualified youth available faster than any other discriminating factor.  Recording Date: 20 Jun 2024 Research Question: Mike Zequeira suggests an interested student examine:  For narrative/misinformation academic researchers, does the TikTok algorithm push content harmful to, or counter to, a positive US military outlook? For military researchers, how can Social Media feeds be integrated into the targeting cycle to enable real time/near real time targeting? Margie Taylor's son, Fort Hood Spc. Joey Lenz, 32, a tactical power generation specialist assigned to the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, was found dead in his barracks room on the morning of Feb. 1. 2022. Lenz, 32, who enlisted in 2017, was expected to leave the Army in mid-March. “He already had a job, he was happy, everything was good, and then he died,” she said. His mother said her son enjoyed his Army life, that he didn't want to leave, but he was being “pushed out.” Since his death, Taylor learned her son was being bullied and targeted by a captain who has since been moved. Taylor said Lenz's staff sergeant and the lieutenant colonel were also moved in recent weeks. Between Christmas, when her son visited her in Conroe, Texas for the holiday, and his death on Feb. 1st, Taylor was told her son has prescribed four medicines: Trazadone, Cyclobenzaprine, Fluoxetine, and Propranolol leading her to believe a drug reaction known as serotonin syndrome may have contributed to his death. During a memorial for Lenz at Fort Hood in February, Taylor said she met privately with over 30 soldiers who wanted to share happy memories of her son. "They said you need to get justice for Joey. They said, ‘We know he didn't just die. There's something going on and they overmedicate here.' Taylor said she was informed by Fort Hood CID Special Agent in Charge Maria Thomas that CID had completed its investigation and that her son had died of “mixed drug interaction.” “I believe there is more to the story,” Taylor said.

Episode 36 of the 18th Airborne Corps Podcast mines those experiences for wisdom and truth in a discussion with five openly gay Soldiers. Within this episode, Captain Nell Robinson, a reserve judge advocate at the United States Army Reserve Command, engages candidly about her experience while serving under Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell as an enlisted soldier, and the contributing factors that led her to take an eighteen-year break in service before returning to an Army that welcomes her wife. "Bradleys from the 30th Armored Brigade Combat Team were last sent to Syria in late October 2019 to guard oil infrastructure from [Daesh] militants, officials said at the time," Army Times reported Friday. "They were quietly pulled out after roughly a month when combined patrols with Turkish forces 'never materialized' and the 'mission requirements changed,' a military official in the region previously told Army Times." One year later, the US military is sending such forces back to Syria. What's the problem here, other than that the US should never have engaged in regime change in Syria in the first place?US President Donald Trump is preparing to nominate a successor to Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg this week. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said back in 2016, following the death of Justice Antonin Scalia, that the American people should be allowed to vote in the presidential election and through that process provide their input to the Supreme Court nomination process. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) made clear his belief that Supreme Court appointments shouldn't be pushed through in an election year, going so far as to say that if a similar situation came up in the future, "I want you to use my words against me." How do we see ourselves through the dust created by this political spin? "Close to 1 million people have died of the virus around the world, a staggering toll," the New York Times reported Monday about the COVID-19 pandemic. "Around the world, at least 73 countries are seeing surges in newly detected cases." What are we to make of this?US Claims UN Sanctions on Iran Reinstated: The World Disagrees - "On Sunday, the United States reiterated that “snapback sanctions” against Iran are back in place at the United Nations, and that all nations are compelled to obey them," Antiwar.com reported Sunday. "They say that the US was allowed to unilaterally do this under the P5+1 nuclear deal." There's a small problem here, a fly in the ointment: "the United States is virtually the only nation that thinks so," Antiwar.com noted. How will this end?A Saturday Reuters headline read: "Pompeo hails Colombia's stance on Maduro, pledges more help in drugs fight." The article said: “'Your support for interim [Venezuelan] president Juan Guaido and the democratic transition for a sovereign Venezuela free of malign influence ... is incredibly valued,' Pompeo told [Colombian President Ivan] Duque in a joint press conference in Bogota." What are we to make of this? A Friday article in CounterPunch said, "With tens of millions unemployed, inevitable eviction merely postponed for a few months and low-wage jobs and small businesses drying up like the Rio Grande south of Albuquerque, you'd think the federal government could negotiate some help for stranded Americans." Is this possible?"Ideas that Russia and China will play by sets of Western rules under any circumstances are deeply flawed, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in an interview with New York-based international Russian-language RTVI channel," TASS reported last week. What signals are being sent here? The title of Max Bluementhal's Friday piece in The Grayzone read: "Mainstream US reporters silent about being spied on by apparent CIA contractor that targeted Assange." What are we to make of this?Guests:Laith Marouf - Broadcaster and journalist based in Beirut, LebanonJohn Burris - Civil rights attorneyDr. Iyabo Obasanjo - Professor, epidemiologist, veterinarian and daughter of former Nigerian President Olusegun ObasanjoRobert Fantina - Journalist and Palestine activistLeo Flores - Latin America coordinator for Code PinkLinwood Tauheed - Associate professor of economics at the University of Missouri-Kansas CityDaniel Lazare - Investigative journalist and author of "The Velvet Coup"Jim Kavanagh - Writer at The Polemicist and CounterPunch and the author of the article "Over the Rainbow: Paths of Resistance After George Floyd"

As a company commander in 2007, I was fortunate to be attached to 3-7 Cavalry as then LTC Broadwater led the squadron in counterinsurgency operations in the Adamiyah area of Baghdad, Iraq. As a clear indicator of his leadership approach, MG Broadwater treated us like one of his own organic companies. He was inclusive, empowering, and led from a coaching mindset…a characteristic that continues today and that you can get a true sense of in this chat. MG Broadwater is an Armor Officer and proud graduate of the University of Kentucky, has served in the 82nd Airborne, the 1st Infantry Division, the 3rd Infantry Division, commanded 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team at Fort Riley, and served as the Deputy Commanding General of the 1st Armored Division. Witnesses: Major General David Allvin: J-5, US Air Force, US European Command (EUCOM) Rachel Ellehuus: Principal Director, Europe & NATO Policy, Office of the Secretary of Defense Tom Tyra: G-3/5/7, US Army Timestamps & Transcripts {06:10} Chairman Vicky Hartzler (MO)- "Foremost of these challenges is a resurgent Russia." {08:12} Rep. Jackie Speier (CA)- "Recent events in Europe have underscored this threat. For example, Russia has occupied Crimea and has fomented the continuing separatists struggle in eastern Ukraine. Across Europe and in particular along Russia’s border, the threat of Russian intervention is on many people’s minds." {11:45} Major General David Allvin - "The strategic environment in Europe has changed drastically over the past 30 months. One of the key reasons for the growing instability has been Russian malign influence, coercion, and aggression against NATO allies and other partner nations. Since the illegal annexation of Crimea and the Russian activity in the Donbass region of Ukraine, the potential for Russia to further advance their military adventurism into NATO countries has demanded a strong response. We at U.S. European Command have been working to assure our allies that our commitment to Article 5 of the Atlantic Treaty is iron clad." {15:59} Rachel Ellehuus- "The three challenges that I see post-Warsaw, and as we continue to think about the future of ERI, are, firstly, institutional adaptation—we need to find a way to make NATO more agile in terms of its decision making, command structure, and defense planning; secondly, defense investment—and that’s not just monetary but also in terms of political will—we need to encourage folks to continue to increase their defense spending and to support operations both within the European and transatlantic theater and further afield; and finally, we need to combat internal political challenges and resist those who seek to divide us or undermine the international security order." {18:10} Major General David Allvin -"We find that within the European theater, we see a more aggressive Russia that is influencing on the periphery states of NATO, and so given the current correlation of forces that might exist in a conflict, specifically with the United States, we do not have nearly the forces we had after 25 years of the degradation of the forces in Europe. This has been understandable because there have been other national-security priorities that have actually taken precedence in other parts of the world. However, we find ourself now with smaller number of forces from all services, as well as the appropriate equipment, in order to be able to field and to respond to any other Russian aggression, and I would say that what ERI has done is it is rapidly enabled us to reverse that trend." {20:35} Rachel Ellehuus -"So we’ve seen the French carrier, Charles de Gaulle, deploy in the Middle East to help us with some of our stress on our naval and maritime Forces, we’ve seen cooperative arrangements to use one another’s bases, and we’ve seen host nations stepping up. So when we send our forces to the Baltic states, host nations such as Poland and the Balts are stepping forward to provide that infrastructure and support." {26:40} Rep. Jackie Speier -"You had indicated to me privately that the troops that we will have stationed as part of ERI would be engaged in military exercises, and you had suggested that the numbers may be as high as a hundred per year, some smaller, some larger. How many of these are air shows?" Major General David Allvin: "Ma’am, I actually wouldn’t put an air show in the—" Rep. Speier: "Good." Major General Allvin: "—category of exercise. When we refer to these exercises, and when I say a hundred, some of these are small, maybe company-level exercises, but these are building that understanding that cohesion at the unit level, and I would say those are the most prolific. However, with the initial funding we’ve been able to receive through ERI, we’re able to have exercises at the larger level, the battalion level and above, which really help us understand the inner operability between formations, because we understand that U.S. European Command will not be the sole entity that will have to defend against Russian aggression; we will be fighting with our allies and partners in the region. And so these broader exercises, these higher-level exercises, really enhance that confidence to be able to fight and maneuver and do combined-armed warfare beyond just the United States but in the coalition." {29:33} Tom Tyra -"In the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, you would see 80 M1 tanks and 140 Bradley Fighting Vehicles, 18 artillery systems, a number of mortar systems and smaller pieces of equipment. So we would end up with that plus the support vehicles that enable that to fight. Then, there would be a rotating brigade that would bring identical sets of equipment. As you delivered the Fires Brigade, you would expect, a another hundred or so artillery systems, either tube or rocket launched to be added to that Fires Brigade." {52:16} Rep. Beto O’Rourke (TX) - "What are the potential risks of this strategy? What could go wrong?" Major General David Allvin: "So, you actually touched on it very well, Congressman, is that there is an escalation risk here."
