S.O.S. (Stories of Service) - Ordinary people who do extraordinary work
Send us a textWhat's your next mission when the military ends? How do you find your tribe, your purpose, and that way to support yourself while a part of a growing community? Would you make a go at it by forming a military podcast? Roger and Dan, hosts of the Tracer Burnout podcast, join the S.O.S. podcast to tell the deeply personal story of how, as they left the uniform behind, they picked up microphones to ensure that other veterans' stories were never forgotten. Join us on this “collab” episode (I consider us a tight-knit community of military creators) with two incredible hosts bridging the civilian-military divide and humanizing serving people. We'll also share tips for others interested in sharing their stories or thinking of starting their podcast. An Army brat, Roger grew up in exotic locales such as El Paso, Texas; West Germany; Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Fayetteville, North Carolina. He entered the Army in 2004 as a Field Artilleryman, including deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. Roger's career consisted of traveling to many countries and enjoying his overseas adventures. Still, he would die happy if he never had to experience another Hindu Kush or Manchurian winter. After growing up in an Army family, Dan spent over 20 years in the US Army from the late 1990s into the 2020s. Stationed in both the US and Europe, he's held positions ranging from infantry rifleman to Platoon Sergeant and from Drill Sergeant to Observer/Controller. A lover of history, travel, and food, Dan has been assigned to Fort Irwin, California, Fort Drum, and New York. After spending several years in Afghanistan, Dan swore that upon retirement, he would never be clean-shaven again and never, ever take a hot shower for granted. Now happily retired, Dan greatly enjoys sitting by the fireplace, enjoying the fine distilled exports of Scotland, and turning the pages of an actual book.Tracer burnout podcast - https://tracerburnout.com/Visit my website: https://thehello.llc/THERESACARPENTERRead my writings on my blog: https://www.theresatapestries.com/Listen to other episodes on my podcast: https://storiesofservice.buzzsprout.comWatch episodes of my podcast:https://www.youtube.com/c/TheresaCarpenter76

The Joint Readiness Training Center is pleased to present the sixtieth episode to air on ‘The Crucible - The JRTC Experience.' Hosted by the Commander of Ops Group (COG), COL Matthew Hardman. Today's guests are the Commander of the Special Operations Training Detachment for US Army Special Operations Command, COL Nathanael Joslyn and one of their special operation forces mentor, Mr. Tom Vogel. The Special Operations Training Detachment (SOTD) at the Joint Readiness Training Center is crucial for preparing special operations forces and conventional forces for integrated combat operations. Responsible for orchestrating training rotations at both JRTC and the National Training Center (NTC) at Fort Irwin, CA, the SOTD provides realistic, immersive training environments that replicate the complexities of modern warfare. By focusing on interdependence, integration, and interoperability (I3), the SOTD ensures that SOF and CF units can operate seamlessly together. Key aspects of their training include joint mission planning, execution of combined operations, and honing of specialized tactics and techniques, which are essential for mission success in diverse and challenging operational landscapes. The JRTC team's call-sign is “Sierra” and NTC's team is “Burro.” In this episode we discuss special operations during large scale combat operations and the “SOF-CF I3” dynamic. Special operations forces-conventional forces interdependence, integration, and interoperability refers to the collaborative efforts between special operations forces and broader conventional forces, specifically the brigade combat team and any multi-national partners at JRTC and NTC. This framework aims to combine the unique capabilities of SOF, such as agility, precision, and specialized skills, with the larger-scale, sustained power and logistical support of conventional forces. The keys to success in SOF-CF I3 include clear communication, mutual understanding of capabilities and limitations, joint training exercises to build cohesion, and a unified command structure to ensure seamless coordination and effective mission execution. Part of S12 “The JIIMs of JRTC: Working with Our Unified Action Partners” series. Be sure to follow us on social media to keep up with the latest warfighting TTPs learned through the crucible that is the Joint Readiness Training Center. For the past month, more than 200 French military personnel have been stationed at Fort Irwin in California's Mojave Desert. For the first time, France has been invited to take part in joint exercises with five allied countries: the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. Initiated by the Pentagon, the project, dubbed "Convergence", is designed to enable all these armies to cooperate in conflict zones and act as an effective coalition. Now that war has returned to Europe, the stakes are high for France. Our correspondents Valérie Defert and Pierrick Leurent followed the French army in the field, with Wassim Cornet.

“Thinking Inside the Box – The Gauntlet” brings you interviews with the United States Army's experts in combined arms maneuver, the Observer Coach Trainers (OC/Ts) of Operations Group, at the National Training Center (NTC), Fort Irwin, California. Host, Capt. Seth Revetta sits down with Observer, Coach, Trainers from the Goldminer and Wagoneer Teams to discuss Dispersion of Sustainment. As explained in FM 3.0, pp. 1-5, the likelihood of the enemy force's use of massed long-range fires and weapons of mass destruction increases during large-scale combat operations—particularly against command and control (C2) and sustainment nodes, assembly areas, and critical infrastructure. To survive and operate against massed long-range fires and in contaminated environments, commanders ensure as much dispersion as tactically prudent. Lt. Col. Octavia Davis, the Senior Logistics Trainer; Maj. Boyce Newton, the Brigade Support Battalion Executive Officer and Staff Trainer; Maj. Sarah Barron, the Brigade Support Battalion Principal Staff Officer Trainer; and Maj. Kenneth Slaton, the Combat/Division Sustainment Support Battalion Principal Staff Officer Trainer informs Brigade Combat Team level leaders of the changes and challenges facing a rear-area support elements and provides some guidance on what they can do to limit friction points and increase survivability. “Thinking Inside the Box” brings you interviews with the United States Army's experts in combined arms maneuver, the Observer Coach Trainers (OC/Ts) of Operations Group, at the National Training Center (NTC), Fort Irwin, California. In this Episode we discuss Command Post Survivability in modern warfare. For years, Army command posts have grown in size as they attempt to maximize situational awareness. They have been consolidating staff, collecting liaison officers, adding monitors for power point presentation, and upgrading additional equipment allowing for the fight to be displayed in real time. With the spread of drones and signal detecting equipment, command posts have become easier to detect and have become larger targets. To get more insights on the topic Maj. Robert Rose interviewed Maj. Steven Pyles, Operations Group coach for operations officers and Capt. Seth Revetta, Operations Group coach for signal officers. They dive deeper into some of the recent articles, doctrinal publications, and best practices to help assist in the command post survivability. The best training many of us experienced has always taken us outside of our comfort zone. For military forces this is of critical importance – you can master personal or section, even company drills well enough in a variety of places, but when you start to operate with different parts of the military you get force integration stresses. These tensions need to be worked out well before you meet an adversary on the battlefield – ideally with a thinking team of professionals acting as a dynamic adversary who will thrash you, while giving you the opportunity to learn, grow and master new skills in extremely testing conditions. It is a big ask – it costs a lot of cash, and uses a huge area of space. More than that, the training itself needs to be conducted by people who really know what they are doing. One such place in the US National Training Centre at Fort Irwin. It represents the gold standard in unit and formation training globally – and has been doing it since 1980, when it was reopened and now acts as the center for final pre-deployment training for Brigade Combat Teams from the US Army. In this conversation, Peter is joined by Brigadier General Curt Taylor, the Commanding General of NTC and Fort Irwin. His aim, it seems, is to “give you your worst day in combat”, before you even leave the United States.
“Thinking Inside the Box” brings you interviews with the United States Army's experts in combined arms maneuver, the Observer Coach Trainers (OC/Ts) of Operations Group, at the National Training Center (NTC), Fort Irwin, California. While the Army focused on counterinsurgency, we had the luxury of taking time to make decisions, but large-scale combat operations will not afford this indulgence. Appropriately delegating decision-making authority allows leaders closer to a problem to make decentralized, rapid decisions rooted in the principles of mission command. Codifying who can make decisions prevents staff and subordinates waiting on a time sensitive action, because they are not sure if they are empowered to take action. Thinking through delegating decisions before arriving at the National Training Center will produce payoffs for commanders who understand when and where they must be present to make the essential decisions they can make. By defining who can make decisions, units will understand the systems needed to support making those decisions in various command posts, allowing effective dispersion of command posts to increase survivability. To discuss how to delegate decision making, we interviewed two members of our Bronco Team, our senior brigade trainer, LTC Adam Latham, and our senior Judge Advocate trainer, MAJ Timothy Davis. The Cognitive Crucible is a forum that presents different perspectives and emerging thought leadership related to the information environment. The opinions expressed by guests are their own, and do not necessarily reflect the views of or endorsement by the Information Professionals Association. During this episode, US Army LTC Brian Burbank discusses the Ghost Team's immersive information operations training capability at the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, California. The Ghost Team challenges brigade-sized units with multi-domain dynamics so that we can win the first battle of the next war. Research Question: Brian Burbank observes that everyone is talking about Artificial Intelligence and how it's going to change modern warfare. The real question is how, and how do we make it useful to help a Commander win? Lots of value to automate the science of Leadership, so Commanders can apply the Art to enhance our information dominance (Our OODA loop is faster than our adversaries). But if it doesn't help Commanders win, then it won't be of value. Before he departed Fort Irwin to become the current Commanding General of the 1st Cavalry Division, Major General Jeffrey Broadwater and I sat down in his office to chat about leadership, combat, the National Training Center, and how to personally manage the highs and lows of command. As a company commander in 2007, I was fortunate to be attached to 3-7 Cavalry as then LTC Broadwater led the squadron in counterinsurgency operations in the Adamiyah area of Baghdad, Iraq. As a clear indicator of his leadership approach, MG Broadwater treated us like one of his own organic companies. He was inclusive, empowering, and led from a coaching mindset…a characteristic that continues today and that you can get a true sense of in this chat. MG Broadwater is an Armor Officer and proud graduate of the University of Kentucky, has served in the 82nd Airborne, the 1st Infantry Division, the 3rd Infantry Division, commanded 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team at Fort Riley, and served as the Deputy Commanding General of the 1st Armored Division. Notably though, are his three assignments to the National Training Center. Through 70 rotations as an Observer/Coach/Trainer and as a rotational unit, MG Broadwater has more time in the Fort Irwin desert than just about anyone. As a LTC, he coached Armored and Infantry Battalions then led the Brigade O/C team. As a COL, he commanded Operations Group, mentoring brigade commanders and shaping the conduct of NTC rotations. And most recently, he served as the Commanding General of NTC and Fort Irwin, responsible for the Fort Irwin tenant units and every echelon of support for NTC rotations. This week on the Skeptical Skeptics Podcast, Rachel looks at the evils that lurk behind the.... Denver Airport. Meanwhile, RJ takes a look at the aliens, ghosts, and whistleblowers (fakes) at Fort Irwin... I mean, 29 Palms... I mean, Joshua Tree.
Rizza Islam was born on March 17th, 1990 in the Richland Farms area of Compton, CA. He is the youngest of 10 children, 5 boys and 5 girls. Growing up in the city of Compton, he was constantly forced to confront the daily plight of an inner city youth trying to make it with meager resources. Gang violence, drugs, and peer pressure were an everyday occurrence where he grew up. As a child he went to Winnie Mandela children’s learning village where he learned traditional African morals & principals along with basic school subjects. He went to Fort Irwin for middle school and for highschool he was a student at opportunities for learning in Long Beach, CA. Rizza Islam attended Compton college majoring in political science and also studied briefly at Hubbard college of administration. He was asked one day to help a young student with their homework and he agreed. Rizza Islam helped to break the horrific secret about the MMR (measles, mumps, Rubella) vaccination and how it had been genetically coded to give African-American males Autism! He had set up a meeting with key leaders within the community including Min. Tony Muhammad and individuals within the political sector such as Bobby Kennedy (Robert F. Kennedy jr) and Brian Hooker. The information was so massive that he was flown to Chicago to meet with The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan to bring it to him! Bobby Kennedy has confessed that NO GROUP wanted to expose this information and that NOONE wanted to work with him and that Min. Farrakhan was the LAST HOPE. As a result of Rizza along with others witnessed this information become exposed to over 1.9 BILLION PEOPLE in over 42 countries at the 20th year anniversary of the Million Man March in Washington D.C! The horrific truth that the senior lead scientist at the CDC Dr. William Thompson confessed that the MMR vaccination gave Black males AUTISM!
Last summer, word first spread that a severely injured wild donkey was roaming the desert near Fort Irwin. The burro, nicknamed Tripod due to his broken leg, soon captured the hearts of residents. Part folk hero, part social media star, here, he is truly the People's Burro. After months of struggle and against all odds, Tripod is on his way to a full recovery. In this episode, you'll hear his story firsthand from the determined group of biologists, veterinarians and community members who have done all they can to ensure he has a happy ending. And we'll wrap up with another story about the power of perseverance, checking in with local novelist Victoria Lafean for our community profile.
Family is important anywhere, but as many Soldiers and their families will tell you, it's even more important in the Army. In fact, family is often what makes all the training, moving and deployments possible -- and worth it. Today, for our holiday episode, we bring you stories about our "Army Family", the close bonds we form with each other and our communities. You'll hear from the mother-daughter team heading up Fort Irwin's gymnastics program, and from the Protestant Women of the Chapel -- a group its members call a "second family". Finally, we highlight two volunteers whose work is driven by the belief that our community is our family, and we must all take care of each other.
Heritage is the stuff that makes us -- where we came from, whose footsteps we are following, which stories we tell. In this episode, we talk with Fort Irwin archaeologist Coral Eginton about the landscape that existed here when the first humans arrived. It was a landscape vastly different from our own, when water filled the dry lake beds and mammoths roamed the hills. Then, we hear from Lupe Lopez and the Red Boy Production Company, who earlier this month performed at Fort Irwin's Native American Heritage Month celebration and work every day to keep their heritage alive. Finally, we sit down with Ken Drylie to hear how a burro helped shape the heritage of the National Training Center.
Every year, on Veterans Day, we as a nation stop to honor and remember men and women who have given everything to serve our country and preserve our freedoms. Service remains at the very core of our Army. It's not just something you do, it's something you join. An entire way of life. A willingness to put others before yourself. A dedication to higher ideal. In our episode today, we're celebrating all those who serve. We will hear from Carl DeVoll, a resident at the Veterans Home of California in Barstow, who as a young Navy recruit in 1946 served in the Marshall Islands during the nuclear tests at Bikini Atoll. And we'll hear from people who serve our community and our Army in other ways -- Barbara Ormsby, who sings karaoke at the Barstow Veterans Home. And E.J. Ane, a student athlete at Fort Irwin who has been honored for his excellence in the classroom, on the field and in the community. Listen. Be inspired. Remember.
Welcome to our first episode! We hear about "Resilience" a lot in the Army. But what does it really mean? Joining us is Fort Irwin resiliency trainer Dave Matthews, who walks us through how resiliency training can make everyone a better version of themselves. Then, listen to Ric Chavez explain how founding the Fort Irwin chapter of Team Red, White & Blue not only helped him get off the couch and start training for a triathlon, but also created a close-knit community here in the High Desert. From Fort Irwin, Calif. and the National Training Center, the Middle of Everywhere brings you real stories of real people at the U.S. Army's premier combat training center.
I had an interesting just a few weeks ago, met somebody, a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army, and it was interesting in what he was doing and how he was planning his future. I thought: “Wow, this would be a great example of what other people, as they’re thinking of another career, another job, or expanding their income some other way – they might have some ideas that they could do, too, from it, as well as they might even copy a little bit of what he did.” Let me get to that right away. We are on with Greg Motes. Greg, welcome. Greg: Hi. Thank you. Thomas: Tell me a little bit about what your life was like before you went in the military. I’m not thinking just in economic terms; I’m thinking in terms of you, your personality, etc. Greg: I grew up as a Military Brat. My dad was in the Army. We moved just a few times when I was growing up. I was lucky to be settled throughout most of my grade school and high school, which was fortunate, in the Midwest. From there, I had a typical Military Brat family lifestyle. I have two brothers, and we played sports, and we made our way through schooling. Thomas: Okay, that’s a little different because we don’t have many people who have been in that situation, a Military Brat, but I guess you couldn’t be so much of a brat, but when you get into the military and started out on your own. Did you find the military changed you at all? I ask that because the beginning of the military literally changed my life for the future tremendously. I could not even expound on how much. What about you? Greg: I very much enjoyed coming into the military. I was fortunate that when I came in, I went into the Armor Branch, and from Armor, I was out at Fort Irwin, California. Fort Irwin is a place where, every month, units from around the army would come to train against the opposing forces, and I was on the side of the opposing forces. It was a great environment to be in, because every month we got to go play on tanks and essentially play laser tag at 30 miles an hour across a playing field the size of Rhode Island. We would play four to six games a month. I say games, and obviously they were training, and it was very serious training, but at the same time, there was a mentality and an attitude about going out there and fighting to win and playing to win. I found a comradery that was very similar to what I had in high school, playing football and playing for state championship football teams, and then going into college and playing in intramural sports and things like that. The army, to me, I think at the onset was very much as an extension of that teamwork to be able to go there. Of course, coming in as a Lieutenant, I was put into a leadership role, and I very much enjoyed doing that. I think it was a lot of fun. Thomas: It’s interesting. Today, kids are playing video games; you guys play the real thing, which is really exciting. For all those kids, including myself, when we were younger and played army or cops and robbers, whatever you played, you didn’t have sticks or little plastic guns; you really had some good things to play with. One thing I find very interesting and it’s sometimes hard for people to know, realize, and understand is that word “teamwork.” One thing that really struck me in the military was that my friends came from some wide array of places. It turns out there was one guy whose father was the General Manager of IBM in the West Coast branch, so he had a tremendous life, all kinds of different things. Closer friends to me later on were actually one guy who was from Watts in L.A., another guy who was from the ghetto in Houston, and lots of places like that. What happened is you didn’t realize and know that until later on when you wanted to stay in touch or something, and you would get their information. The reason you didn’t know and understand that is because everybody’s dressed alike. There are no outfits, there are no funny costumes or anything else.
