Send us a textStonewall Jackson In this episode of The Figures of the American Civil War Podcast, I am joined by self-confessed Stonewall Jackson fan Chris Mackowski to discuss the life of Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson. Born on January 21, 1824, in Clarksburg, Virginia, Jackson graduated from West Point in 1846 and began his career in the artillery. He fought in the Mexican-American War, but in 1852, he resigned his military commission to accept a teaching position at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia, where he served as a Professor of Natural and Experimental Philosophy. Throughout his life, Jackson faced several tragedies, but his devotion to his faith helped him persevere. When the Civil War began, he accepted a position in the Confederate Army. During the Battle of First Bull Run, he earned one of the most famous nicknames in American Civil War history: "Stonewall." JacksonOther Confederate Figures.Confederate Figures. Feelings of burnout and boredom have become prevalent in modern life. To understand the roots of and solutions to these issues, we can turn to both ancient philosophers and contemporary thinkers. Among the latter is Korean-German philosopher Byung-Chul Han, whose thought-provoking analyses are gaining increasing recognition. If you're not yet familiar with Han's philosophy, Steven Knepper, a professor at the Virginia Military Institute and the co-author of a new critical introduction to this modern philosopher's work, will take us on a tour of some of Han's key ideas. In the first part of our conversation, Steven unpacks Han's concept of the “burnout society” and why so many of us feel tired from participating in what he calls “auto-exploitation” and “positive violence.” We then discuss how our burnout society is also a “palliative society” that tries to avoid suffering at all costs and how our obsession with health has turned us into a modern version of Nietzsche's “last man.” We end our discussion with some of Han's ideas for resisting the pitfalls of modernity, including embracing ritual, contemplation, and an openness to the mystery of others.Resources Related to the PodcastByung-Chul Han's books, including The Burnout Society and The Palliative SocietyShop Class as Soulcraft and The World Beyond Your Head by Matthew B. In this edition of Madison Book Beat, host Andrew Thomas speaks with Henry Wise on his debut novel, Holy City (2024, Grove Atlantic Press).Holy City is a novel that grabs your attention by the opening sentence and propels you into a world of crime, guilt, unrealized desire, and vanquished hopes and dreams. The narrative shuttles between Richmond, Virginia–the eponymous Holy City–and the rural county of Euphoria. Anything but euphoric, it's peopled by a cast of characters both burned out on the passage of time and not very optimistic about the present. We encounter people enduring the harsh realities of poverty, the legacies of racism, the personal and historical ghosts of the past, as well as the fickleness of the small town legal system. Everyone's running from something, and everyone's got something to hide. We encounter this world through the eyes of Deputy Sheriff Will Seems, a prodigal son of sorts who returns to Euphoria from Richmond after a decade away. While immediately embroiled in the investigation of a brutal homicide, our brooding protagonist must navigate a guilty past, a fraught relationship with family, and an increasingly suspect county Sheriff. Its fast pacing is complemented by a striking poetic lyricism that demands regularly slowing down and relishing in the talents of this poet-turned-novelist.Henry Wise is a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute and the University of Mississippi MFA Program. His work has appeared in Shenandoah, Nixes Mate, Radar Poetry, Clackamas, and elsewhere. His nonfiction and photography have appeared in Southern Cultures. Holy City is his first novel.

Initially enlisted in 1969 to play football for the army, Col. Tiso ended up on a bus to the Virginia Military Institute to ultimately get commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1973. He served decades as a soldier and, after mandatory retirement, still chose to serve 11 more years as an intelligence planner and analyst for a defense contractor. He deployed five more times to Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iraq. Col. Tiso explains that the Iraqi army was envisioned to be a bulwark against Iran. But its failures in the Battle of Najaf, as well as a pivot in strategy, ended up costing American lives in a war that could have been over by 2005.
