I love Dr. Seuss books. I grew up reading Dr. Seuss books. I remember going to the neighbourhood library and reading for hours all the different books he wrote. When I learned that in march 2021, 6 of his books were being pulled and banned I was very keen to learn more about it. Why were they banned? Was Dr. Seuss racist? All these questions I answer (from my perspective) in this podcast episode Onwards! As always, I'm Hussam El Hage and you can find me: YouTube Instagram Twitter Facebook Newsletter
Not everything in life goes according to plan and sometimes you fail at something. What counts is what you do with that failure and learn from it. I will never forget the first time I opened a Pokemon pack of trading cards. As a little kid, watching Pokemon on TV and playing Pokemon Yellow on my Gameboy color, this was the most exhilarating feeling ever. When I decided to get the new Pokemon booster box recently and I opened that 1st pack, all those feelings as a kid came back. Especially that of nostalgia and emotions towards my father, the one who bought me my first ever pack. Memories have a way of instilling themselves inside of items and whenever we interact with them those memories come right back. What a feeling! Onwards! I always loved reading as a kid. There were infinite worlds for me to escape in and live a life of someone brave, courageous, and cool...something I wasn't at the time. Two books for me were crucial in my early development and growth of my imagination; The Wringer and Maniac Magee, both written by Jerry Spinelli. It was only last year I emailed Mr. Spinelli some questions and he actually answered. This is that story. Onwards! A Pokemon card was just sold for $150,000 dollars. Comic books are increasing in value daily. We spend hours remembering the old cartoons from the 90's and the games we used to play. Why is that? Have you ever been bullied? Ever been put down? Do you carry that chip on your shoulder or do you let it go? Throughout my life I have kept those grudges and utilized them to grow and advance in my life as well as in my career. It was only after I let them go did I learn that the journey itself is the motivation I need to keep going. If you think about it, which way is the right way? Book, Goals, Leaders. 3 Topics that have been racking my brain all week. I used to talk about achieving goals, but never actually followed through. So I have dedicated my time to writing down my goals and planning them in detail which has helped me to actually follow through. Building a smoker, learning a new language, trying pottery; these are all activities I have always wanted to try. Now with tangible plans I will begin to tackle each of them. Reading has and is an ongoing goal for me. Lets Take This Online is one avenue of exploring knowledge growth and books play a major role in that and one of my goals is to finish 4 books a month and share what I learned with all of you. Lastly, but most importantly is the concept of a "good leader". I have been thinking of what makes a good leader a lot lately. I think it starts with getting to know and understand what motivates your team as we are all different. Understanding how each of us work can help create an atmosphere that drives performance instead of stifling it. Onwards! Hard work, long hours... You want to get good at anything, you can't skip those 2. Menon started rapping when he was 15 and kept at it, nonstop every day. He would work a full-time job, then spend the rest of his time at the studio; to the point that he started falling asleep at the wheel. So what did he do? He slept at the studio! That kind of dedication has pushed Menon to be one of the known rappers within the Middle East and now the Philippines, as he decided to take his music there to get closer to his heritage. It was amazing to hear his journey and the lessons he learned on the way. You can find Menon here. Onwards! We have all had at least one job we did not enjoy in our lives. Have you ever asked yourself, why did I hate it so much? was it me? was it the company? I found that knowing how you work and communicating that to your management will help keep a positive work environment. We are all unique and we all work in our own unique ways. I also share some funny stories and situations I have dealt with at the work place. Onwards! As always, I'm Digital Hoos and you can find me: YouTube Instagram Twitter Facebook Newsletter
I absolutely love it when a podcast goes in a completely different way than I initially expected. Sometimes you talk to individuals and you suddenly go down a tangential path into complex topics. Dana is a talented poet that has had quite an interesting life journey to get to where she is today even surviving a terrorist attack! The podcast itself jumped right into a discussion of social media algorithms which got me thinking and helped me further my own thoughts on that topic alongside a series of topics. You can find Dana here. Onwards! As always, I'm Digital Hoos and you can find me: YouTube Instagram Twitter Facebook Newsletter
Sometimes the fact that I don't script my podcasts really works in my favor because I get to discover my guests' experiences and lessons on the spot, at the same time my listeners do. You meet some tough people in life. Ones that have been through things you never would think about. Some of those people turn negative and some become even more positive and decide that they will be the ones that will break that negative cycle. Shereen is one of those people. I find friendships interesting, especially comparing the kind of friend I used to be to the one I currently am. Friendships are complex dynamics that change drastically based on your own journey. Some friends drift away while others become closer over time. Farrah is one person, even when I wasn't the greatest friend, that has been there throughout the years. Over 13 of them to be exact! Funny enough, we both ended up podcasting and she has been a great supporter and person I go to for podcast advice. Not only did we discuss podcasts, but I also got to learn a lot more about her work in her wine classes and her love for the industry itself. It was very insightful for me and I hope for you as well. We are still in lockdown and I can't think of a better way to spend the time than having Rayan Bailouni back on the podcast! Rayan is a music producer, who has been working with some amazing local artists such as Menon; the artist behind the intro song called Second Nature. Just because we are in lockdown doesn't mean we can't podcast with guests right? Finally had Zeina on the podcast where we talked everything podcast-related. We are in a lockdown! Dubai has instilled a curfew and 3-day complete lockdown while it sterilizing the city. So what better way to spend the time than record podcasts? In this episode, I ask you to share your concerns and outline some of the information I gathered about this outbreak from credible sources. Let's be honest, genuine and authentic. We are living in strange times. A mysterious disease has spread itself across the world, people are panicking, lives are being lost, jobs are being lost, and we are social isolating. Instead of one day, looking back and recording content about this time, I thought it would be best to do it while we are living it. I wanted to share my feelings and thoughts on what is going on in the world today and hope it resonates with you. So here it is! My first solo episode. No guest, just me. Onwards! "A Day Without Laughter is a Day Wasted" - Charlie Chaplin Comedy is awesome, isn't it? There is a special skill to make a room full of people laugh. I have been getting more and more into the comedy world over the years, learning of comics like Theo Von, Chris D'elia, Bryan Callen, Bobby Lee and a ton more from around the world. Only recently have I started learning about the local UAE comedy scene and my first attempt was visiting a local comedy show hosted by Comedy Kix, a UAE comedy club. What brought me there is a story of its own and the result was awesome. One comedian really grasped the attention of the crowd through his crowd work, it had a strong feel of Andrew Schulz, and that was Abz Ali. After the show, I invited Abz on the podcast and when we started recording I knew it was gonna be an interesting one. This one is for the books! I hope you enjoy it and laugh along with us. How authentic are we with our content? Why do we not share our journey with others? Do you have value to add? These are some of the questions this podcast episode tries to answer. I was fortunate enough to sit down with my closest friend Hani, who I've known for over 20 years. Like so many of us, Hani and I ended living in different countries and continents and it has become rare to have a long-form discussion face to face. This is why this episode is very dear to my heart. I was finally able to share my thoughts and ideas of this journey I am on for the first time with someone that has known me in my early days. Not only that, I was able to hear his thoughts and perspectives on many topics and learn more about him. It was a great episode full of value and I hope to have many more with Hani in the future. One lesson that I definitely can take away from this is, we all need to put more effort into our relationships as true genuine friends are hard to come by. "I graduated computer science and day 1 I got a marketing and sales job" So many of us choose an education degree that we are either pushed into or we chose to appease someone else. A big chunk of my podcast guests all studied something that they did not end up practicing in their professional careers. Rami always had a love for music, so even though he studied coding he chose a career path that brought him to what he loved. At the time of this podcast, he was working in Anghami; a music aggregator that is dominant in the Middle East. Now, he is the Head of Video and Creative at TikTok. I met Rami in the podcast world, as he hosts his own podcast, and it was just great to riff and discuss his journey. Self-awareness. I have been obsessed with this concept for a while now and discuss it openly with my podcast guests, friends and on social media. Sometimes in life, you go down a rabbit-hole due to circumstances, your group of friends, or a number of other reasons. My guest on this episode started his hustle creating a rap group in his hometown to then owning a nightclub at the age of 20. He had to develop that self-awareness to realize that if he continued down that road, it might take him to a place he did not want to go. He is currently the Head of Growth at Chalhoub Group after spending many years as Managing Director of Duval Consulting. Nick found a way to take the learnings of his youth and implement them in his professional life. Listening to that journey was just awesome! You learn a lot from the people you work with, even if you don't think you are. Some teach you technical stuff, others teach you strategic aspects and even the ones you think suck, they actually teach you as well. The point is, always learn. Learn from everyone around you. Pedro is one person, that really helped me shape my knowledge of digital media buying; especially the world of programmatic He is an ex-colleague who took the time to riff and discuss aspects that, at the time, were out of my realm of knowledge. So to get him on the podcast and discuss different topics from media to running a beer company and much more was just awesome! I first came across Rayan from his Instagram ads playing one of his Beat Labs; the moment I heard that song I was blown away. His Beat Lab series has blown up due to the consistency and creativity of his work. You have to check out the beat he created call Shogun, which will be on his Instagram page. Apart from producing music for artists, Rayan also sings and can be seen across many music events in Dubai. Not only did we talk about music we also delved into our personal journeys in life, the importance of self-awareness and a ton of other topics. It is always awesome having an author on the podcast. The process they follow to write, edit and publish a book is a long and difficult one and is full of lessons that I want to derive. I first was introduced to Rachael through social media, where she is active and constantly posting valuable content. Once her book was released I got a copy and started reading, and I truly enjoyed it. At Home Anywhere is Rachael's journey to Dubai and the constant moves she did before, and most importantly the lessons she learned and hopes to share with us. It was great speaking to her and I recommend this episode to everyone out there Rachael's Instagram Website Free Chapter of her book As always, I'm Digital Hoos and you can find me: YouTube Instagram Twitter Facebook Newsletter
Another great time recording with a friend and ex-colleague. Muzammil and I have known each other for many years but never had the chance to sit down and just talk. Moving forward all episodes can be found on YouTube where you can watch the first 30 minutes of the podcast, before choosing to continue on this audio platform. We enjoyed recording the episode so much we decided to create and co-host a brand new podcast show called The Tangent! It is quite rare, or at least not as frequent, to see a social media influencer who utilizes LinkedIn to its full extent. More so even, when that person is from a younger generation. This is exactly what caught my eye about Jayde. Not only is she a verified creator on TikTok and has over 1.2M, but her utilization of LinkedIn is one that most adults seem to be lacking in. She literally is everywhere on LinkedIn! I've seen her dropping daily posts, she actually has a great series of ABC's of TikTok, she appears on a ton of podcasts as well as collabs with individuals across the platform. It was great to record an episode with her and I am excited to see her success in the future. https://www.tiktok.com/@jaydecandance https://www.linkedin.com/in/jaydevincent/ As always, I'm Digital Hoos and you can find me: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/digitalhoos/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/digitalhoos LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/hussam-el-hage-42566230/ Sign Up to the LTTO Newsletter Here: https://mailchi.mp/6f383cc738de/lttosignup
