What if happiness isn't just a feeling — but a formula? In this mind-expanding episode, I sit down with Dr. Alphonsus Obayuwana — physician, scientist, happiness coach, and founder of the Triple-H Project — to break down his 30+ years of research into human hope, emotional well-being, and what really drives lasting happiness. We are discussing his new book: The Happiness Formula. He introduces the groundbreaking Triple-H Equation: Hope over Hunger = Happiness — and explains how it can reshape your relationship with money, your goals, and your emotional peace. You'll walk away learning: How happiness and hope are scientifically connected — and why one can't exist without the other What the five “human hungers” are and how they silently shape your financial stress How to calculate your Personal Happiness Index — and what your score says about your well-being Why people with financial success still feel unfulfilled — and how to change that Practical ways to increase your hope and reduce your emotional “hunger” starting today Why measuring your happiness is the key to improving it This is one of the most profound conversations I've had — and one that could completely reframe how you think about wealth, success, and peace of mind. The Science of Happiness – Ancient Wisdom Meets Modern ResearchIn this enlightening episode, we explore the science of happiness as revealed in Bhagavad Gita verses 18.36 to 18.40. Lord Krishna outlines a sophisticated psychological map that categorizes joy into three distinct types: sattvic, rajasic, and tamasic. This ancient framework anticipates findings from neuroscience and positive psychology, offering profound insights that contemporary research is only beginning to understand. You'll hear how Krishna's analogy of the Indian gooseberry—"bitter at first, sweet in the end"—mirrors the brain's preference for delayed gratification over instant highs.Krishna's description of sattvic happiness, which arises through self-knowledge and inner purification, finds strong support in modern neuroscience. Activities that demand effort in the beginning, like meditation or disciplined learning, light up parts of the brain linked to sustained wellbeing and inner contentment. This type of happiness feels challenging at first but nurtures deeper peace over time, establishing neural pathways that build lasting fulfillment rather than brief dopamine spikes. The Gita's warning about rajasic happiness mirrors what psychologists now describe as the hedonic treadmill. Experiences like scrolling social media or chasing quick wins offer an initial rush, followed by emptiness and fatigue. Krishna called this "like nectar at first, but like poison in the end." The science of happiness confirms that these patterns, driven by dopamine surges, lead to compulsive cycles of pleasure-seeking and regret.Tamasic happiness, the lowest kind, involves escapism, laziness, or self-deception. Modern research into procrastination and experiential avoidance shows how these behaviors offer short-term relief while increasing long-term disengagement and dissatisfaction. Krishna described this as a happiness that "covers the true nature of the Self," a sharp reflection of what cognitive scientists now observe in those trapped by fear and comfort. This episode bridges timeless spiritual wisdom with cutting-edge science to offer a unified perspective on what truly makes us happy. You'll walk away with actionable insights for transforming short-term indulgence into sustainable joy, and for replacing anxiety-driven behavior with mindful awareness.Join us as we connect the ancient science of happiness with modern-day challenges, and discover a path that leads not just to feeling good, but to being whole.krsnadaasa (Servant of Krishna)

Are university students unhappy? We won't generalize, but many are, and this was something Bruce Hood noted. Being an experimental psychologist who teaches at the University of Bristol,  an opportunity presented itself. Why not start a course on the science of happiness, and while teaching it collect data from the students attending? The resulting course (created with advice from one his former students, Laurie Santos) proved popular, and Hood last year published a book, The Science of Happiness: Seven Lessons for Living Well. In this Social Science Bites podcast, Hood explains to interviewer David Edmonds the scientific basis of happiness, some details on how to measure it, and then some of those lessons for harvesting its benefits. Hood explains how scholarship has determined some genetic basis for happiness, how circumstances contribute to but don't dictate happiness, and how individuals focus more on the negative than the positive, which clearly not the most nurturing environment for happiness. There is a bias towards negativity, he says, “So that's why we know the negative things more quickly and more loudly than the positive.” That sounds bad (see – negative). But there's another bias at play, one that also favors optimism, that Hood attempts to harness. “So we tend to see the future as grim, and we have these distortions. But what's interesting, if you ask people, ‘Do you think to yourself individually you'll be better off in five years' time?' Then it seems to switch. People seem to say, ‘Yeah, I think I will be better.' So, it's a kind of interesting paradox that we think the world's going to hell in a basket. And yet, as individuals, we think things can get better.” Hood's research interests arose around the visual development of infants, and then evolved to include intuitive theories, self-identity, essentialism and the cognitive processes behind magical thinking in adults. It was in relation to those that Hood first appeared on Social Science Bites, addressing the human belief in the supernatural. You can listen to that podcast, and also enjoy a lovely Alex Cagan poster built around the episode.

Are We All Out of Our Minds? With Neuroscientist Dr. Dwayne Godwin & Cartoonist Dr. Jorge Cham

Send us a text In this episode, Dr. Eeks is joined by neuroscientist Dr. Dwayne Godwin and cartoonist Dr. Jorge Cham, the creative duo behind Out of Your Mind, a book that makes neuroscience both fun and digestible—perfect for Nerds and Nerd Nots alike (yes, that's my podcast tagline). They kick things off with love—what it is, why we fall for some people and not others, and whether science could create a love potion that turns romance into a biochemical hostage situation. From love, they move to hate and how some people actually get addicted to hate. They'll also discuss AI—whether it could ever develop consciousness and what that might mean for humanity—before diving into addiction and the ongoing debate over how much of it is choice versus biology. They'll talk about happiness, whether money can actually buy it, and a bizarre true medical case of a man who, after a brain surgery gone wrong, was left permanently stuck in the present moment.  Finally, they'll explore what happens when we die and whether the authors ever get existentially bummed out thinking about how fragile and robotic we really are. If you like science with a side of humor and deep, slightly absurd questions, this episode is for you. Dr. Dwayne Godwin is a neuroscientist, educator, and professor in the Department of Translational Neuroscience at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. His research focuses on abnormal brain rhythms, exploring calcium channel function, epilepsy, and traumatic brain injury to develop potential treatments for neurological diseases. Beyond the lab, he is passionate about science outreach, co-creating Mind in Pictures for Scientific American Mind and contributing to blogs for the Society for Neuroscience and the Museum of the Moving Image. Dr. Jorge Cham is a Daytime Emmy-nominated, best-selling cartoonist and the creator of PHD Comics, a popular online comic strip about academia. He is the co-creator, Executive Producer, and Creative Director of Elinor Wonders Why, a top-rated PBS Kids animated series. Cham has co-authored several popular science books, including We Have No Idea: A Guide to the Unknown Universe and Frequently Asked Questions about the Universe, as well as the children's book Oliver's Great Big Universe. He also co-hosts and co-creates the hit podcast Daniel and Jorge Explain the Universe. What makes a good life? For decades, psychologists have debated whether true fulfillment comes from happiness—a life of comfort and joy—or meaning—a life of purpose and impact. But what if there's a third way?University of Chicago psychology professor Shigehiro Oishi has spent his career studying happiness, meaning, and what truly brings people deep satisfaction. His new research suggests that some of the most fulfilled people don't prioritize either—they live psychologically rich lives, full of novelty, challenges, and transformative experiences. In this episode, Oishi explains why psychological richness might be the missing piece in our search for fulfillment.

Science can change your life. The more we study what makes people develop, grow, learn, and flourish—the more we see how the practical application of scientific findings can help us transform our life and experience—into a life of value, meaning, purpose and true thriving.Yale psychologist Laurie Santos has spent her career investigating the human brain and how it thrives. From her popular Yale course to her podcast, The Happiness Lab, she's communicating actionable and hopeful lessons for how to build lasting habits, cultivate self-compassion, manage complex emotions, and realign our lives toward meaningful happiness. In this conversation with Dr. Laurie Santos, we discuss:How the mental health crisis affecting young people changed her, and how she teaches psychologyHow our brains lie to usThe role of positive and negative emotions in a good lifeHow feeling good can lead to doing goodThe psychological and relational benefits of faith and spiritualityAnd she offers practical insights, science-backed guidance, and powerful exercises for managing misalignment and difficult emotions.Laurie Santos on how to activate psychological science for more happiness and meaning (from the episode):“Some of these factors that we know scientifically do work. From simple behavior changes like being more social, doing nice things for others, just healthy habits  like sleeping and moving your body,  to mindset shifts, to becoming a little bit more present, to becoming more other oriented, to becoming more grateful, more self-compassionate, and so on.There are shifts that we can make that can have a huge effect on how we actually interact in the world. We need to understand that we're not perfect, we're just human. And we will mess up a little bit too. But it's really the journey that   matters.”About Laurie SantosDr. Laurie Santos is the Chandrika and Ranjan Tandon Professor of Psychology at Yale University and host of The Happiness Lab podcast. Read our book, The Score That Matters https://amzn.to/3XxHi7p Full show notes at www.LearningLeader.com Notes: Arthur grew up with one goal - To be the world's greatest French horn player. He learned that striving for something was fungible across all fields of life. It was a great laboratory for learning. Intrinsic vs Extrinsic motivation - Intrinsic motivation comes from an internal desire to accomplish a goal, while extrinsic motivation comes from external rewards and praise.  "Misery comes from excessive auto-focus." Misery comes from thinking about yourself too much and not enough about helping others. The curse of the strive... All happiness comes from progress. The arrival is not the goal. How to be happy while striving: Be grateful - Write it down. Do it daily. Always look to help others. "All research is 'me-search.'" The Four Idols:  Money, Power, Pleasure, and Prestige/Fame. We talked through ours… What are yours? The Four Focus areas to help with happiness Faith Family Friendship Serving Others Define your purpose. Write it down. Understand why you're here. Mine = "To inspire others to value and pursue excellence." Too many people are ok with mediocrity. We should strive for more. Oprah Winfrey is the same person everywhere she goes. She is genuine and authentic to all. Arthur's column helped Oprah stay positive and happy through the pandemic. So much so that she called him and asked to meet. And eventually, write a book together. That book became a #1 best-seller. #1 Life Hack: "Don't lie ever." Arthur is jacked (in great shape). Taking care of your body helps with unhappiness. Wake up 1.5 hours before dawn. Work out hard. Lift weights. Do challenging cardio. Life/Career Advice: Don't worry too much about the first job out of college. Don't sacrifice relationships. Bring love to every relationship and be great at what you do. Be excellent. Emanate love and show excellence.
