The Trinity – Episode #31 In This Episode... We return from our little hiatus. We are busy realigning our schedules so we can get back to bringing you edifying content every week. We come back talking about the Trinity. Segment 1 Why did we being the episode with the Athanasian Creed instead of Scripture? Early on, the Trinity was important. Christians are fiercely monotheistic, but we worship The Father, The Son, and The Spirit. The word Trinity is not in the Bible and Tertullian is credited as being the first to use the latin word trinity. These episodes are born of John C. reading while on vacation where he came up with questions for us to talk about on the podcast. Segment 2 Why is the Trinity important? This is how God has revealed himself in Scripture. Also, other doctrines rest on the Trinity. In discussion of the Three Persons of the Trinity, John uses a big word, Perichoresis. We come up with a good working definition of the Trinity using Systematic Theology by Louis Berkhoff. Segment 3 We begin looking at how we logically come to the doctrine of the Trinity. Did it being in the New Testament or the Old? A number of Scripture is read to come to the conclusion that the Father is God, Jesus is God, and the Spirit is God. We move on to distinguishing all Three Persons from Each Other. Jesus, Man – Episode #27 In This Episode... In the next two weeks we talk about the two natures of Jesus. This week, we focus on Jesus's humanity. Today, Mormonism is the fastest growing “Christian” religion in the world. We’ve been visited by Jehovah’s Witnesses. They both speak of Jesus. What makes our Jesus different? Does it matter? Important questions we felt needed answering. 01:04 – Segment 1 We start the discussion by talking about how Jesus is the most popular Sunday school answer. Why is it important to talk about Jesus Himself? John C. has been shunned by members of his family as they are Mormon. The wrong Jesus can’t save anybody, therefore, this is an important topic. Jesus has two natures, so we’ll discuss them in two episodes. We give an overview of the next two weeks including a definition of nature. How do you pronounce Chalcedonian? The branches have a brief discussion on a history lesson about the early church and coming up with a formulation and battling heresy. The ditches that can occur with this topic land you in heresy. 09:37 – Segment 2 We go through the various characteristics of Jesus’ human nature. Jesus is truly God and truly Man in one Person. The glorified state of Jesus' body is discussed. We feel sorry for James, the brother of Jesus. A relevant discussion on Nestorianism and other early church heresies is had. 23:46 – Segment 3 There is a further discussion on heresy and why it logically doesn’t make sense to separate Jesus’ natures. We continue to discuss the different attributes of the humanity of Jesus. Next, we ask, did Jesus have a soul? All of this is fine, but we finally get into the why. So, why does Jesus need to be truly Man? It brings great rest that Jesus understands what we go through, and we have all the tools that Jesus used to not sin. Does fast forwarding through the bad parts of shows really work? It comes down to an issue of the heart. Phil Moser and his books on Biblical Strategies use the lie, the truth, and the promise. The lie is I can watch and not be affected or I can just fast forward. John J. demeans Christian entertainment. The branches discuss legalism and how to avoid that in the quest for purity. John J. mentions a podcast that talks about this topic frequently, Theocast It comes down to a matter of conscience. James asks “What is it about this show that is satisfying?” in order to get to the heart issue. This leads to Root sins vs. fruit sins. We talk about the heart in our conversation with Dr. and Mrs. Tedd Tripp which you can find here. 14:33 – Segment 2 Okay, so can we enjoy worldly entertainment? We speak about changing our mind to realign our thoughts to God’s thoughts and move in that direction. How does this jive with Faith alone? Is repentance a one time thing? The Christian life is a repenting life. What about God repenting in the Old Testament? How does an unchanging God change His mind?, 11:06 – Segment 2 How do repentance and forgiveness go together? First, we talk about what repentance is not. Then, it starts with a heart overwhelmed by Godly sorrow. Unless the spirit of God is present, there can’t be true repentance. What if I repent and keep doing the same sin? The heart condition is important for true repentance. That’s why repentance comes from God. An unbeliever can’t repent unless God regenerates. 24:41 – Segment 3 How long does repentance take? Other sins, such as pride, can get in the way of repentance. Church discipline is necessary because of unrepentant sin. Thomas Watson calls repentance a spiritual medicine made up of six special ingredients. 28:49 – Segment 4 We move onto forgiveness. No, 70 times 7 doesn’t mean you only have to forgive someone 490 times. We discuss the different relationships in which we ask for forgiveness. What are the responsibilities of the two people in a moment where forgiveness is being sought. What is the person doesn’t ask for forgiveness. A picture of what unforgiveness looks like is painted and how it contrasts. John C. with the quote of the day, “The ultimate purpose of forgiveness is to heal the relationship.” Forgiveness with non believers and does forgiveness mean putting yourself in a bad position? A good picture of the forgiveness process is shown in Lysa TerKeurst’s relationship and divorce with her husband. Disagreements – Episode #19 In This Episode... We have a special guest today. We welcome the Senior Pastor from our church, Calvary Baptist Church in Riverhead, NY, Dave Cooke. 01:38 – Segment 1 The discussion gets started in that disagreements in and of themselves are not bad. Iron sharpens iron is a well-known Scripture. However, that only happens when there is friction. How do we handle situations in which we have disagreements? The problem of disagreements is made worse and more public by social media. We will be talking about two general types of disagreement. Those that are theologically based and those that are not theologically based. In theological disagreements, we cannot disagree about the essentials. You can find a deeper treatment of the essentials in our previous podcast on Theology. Everything we do is in love. In everything, we need to be representing Christ and the Gospel. We discuss disagreements of doctrine that lies outside orthodoxy. There is a brief discussion on the Middle Ages and how they viewed orthodoxy. Are disagreements different with Christians and non-Christians? Both cases, we must represent the Gospel. There are three levels on disagreement in doctrinal matters: Essentials Non-Essentials that are discussed in Scripture but are unclear. Adiaphora that are not discussed in Scripture. ”The Peacemaker” by Ken Sande lays out a view of three options during a disagreement: The perfect Christ Centered response. Fleeing Attacking. Dave’s wife provides wisdom with “It is more important to be righteous than right.” It is important to remember in all situations, we are talking to another human being. 21:18 – Segment 2 We start to talk about debatable matters. In this, we need to be careful not to become too dogmatic. John holds onto debatable doctrine with an open hand. How do we know when it is a secondary matter? Is it worth disagreeing with someone especially on social media? We have a discussion on tongues as an example. 28:38 – Segment 3 Nuts and bolts what are some parameters when we disagree on Facebook? We need to be charitable. If it’s a Christian, we need to have the view that they are speaking out of a desire to glorify God. Ad hominem attacks are unacceptable. What do we do when we see people spouting heresy? We have different levels of responsibility such as church family, friends, and others. We are talking to an image bearer of God. On social media, we have time to respond and we should take that time. We should remember on social media who are audiences are. Our primary audience is the person to whom we are responding, but we have a secondary audience of everyone who can see it. As such, we shouldn’t be so dogmatic in debatable issues. 39:36 – Segment 4 The branches talk about disagreements that are not theological in nature. Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure we’d talk about the 2016 election. Dave wrote an excellent blog on this topic. James gave his personal view on the election. Dave talks about how we conduct ourselves as shown in Ephesians 4. The unity of spirit and bond of peace turned into WWE Smackdown. We turn the discussion to how we should have disagreed. What do we do when we are doing things right, but we are being attacked. We don’t want to be contentious when we are talking to people about being contentious. When things are getting contentious we can diffuse the situation by praying together. We need to be willing to admit we’re wrong especially in secondary matters. In the end, it’s okay to disagree but we need to do it in a God honoring way. Marriage and the Family Part 3 – Episode #18 In This Episode... 01:11 – Segment 1 As a parent, we are to disciple our children/li> How does a Christian disciple unsaved children? Even unsaved, children are created in the likeness and image of God and have to be obedient. We should take an evangelistic role with our children, preaching the Gospel saved or not. We need to model the disciplines of the Christian life to our children. The motivation to get our kids to obey needs to be for God’s glory. We are not worthy of having our kids obey us. God is. Kids honor God by obeying their parents. As parents, we need to exhibit the grace that God shows us, but we need to make sure they understand there are consequences for our sin not out of anger. We need to make sure that the consequences are shown to be because of the sin, and not out of unforgiveness of the parent. 09:500 – Segment 2 The branches move onto discussing discipline of children. LITV Episode 15 | Roman Catholicism vs the Reformation

Roman Catholicism versus the Reformation – Episode #15 In This Episode... 01:50 – Segment 1 The reformation was a Protest to Reform the Catholic Church Justification by Faith Protestant Definition – Legal transaction where we are made right in God’s Sight only because of our faith. Double Imputation – our sins were imputed to Jesus and His perfect righteousness was imputed to us. (Also called the Great Exchange) Another example is a chalkboard full of our sins being erased, but it also has to be filled with righteous deeds which we cannot do, so Jesus writes His deeds on it. Protestant belief is we cannot lose that righteousness. A brief definition is given. The term catholic (with a lower case c) means universal and is okay. Many solid biblical creeds and confessions use the term catholic faith to describe the whole body of the church. When we discuss catholic in this episode, we mean Roman Catholic. 07:45 – Segment 2 Roman Catholic Justification – Infused righteousness. Kind of like a B12 shot of righteousness which you can lose by committing a mortal sin. We believe this flys in the face of the sufficiency of the atonement. The prominent theme of the Reformation is a deep concern for the Gospel. Martin Luther said, in his 1535 commentary on Galatians that is the doctrine of justification is lost, the whole Christian doctrine is lost The immediate cause of the reformation was the selling of indulgences. John mentions that it still exists in the Catholic world. While that is technically true, as a matter of clarification, it is not now, nor has it ever technically been something that can be sold. Indulgences themselves are accepted by Catholic doctrine, but they are not to be sold. Only done through meritorious works. Indulgences are useful to shorten a persons time in purgatory, another Catholic doctrine in which Protestants don’t believe. The discussion of indulgences led into a discussion on the sacramental system. Roman Catholics believe partaking in the sacraments, of which there are seven, will impart grace to the believer. (Per the discussion earlier about losing your infused righteousness, the sacraments help to restore it.) There is a brief discussion on sacraments versus ordinances among Protestants. While all Protestants hold to two sacraments/ordinances – there is a question of what those items do. There is a discussion on the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick as necessary to help keep a believer in a state of grace. 18:31 – Segment 3 What is the extent of the church’s authority? Protestants believe the church has authority but only that which it has been given by Scripture. Roman Catholics believe the church has authority, the Scripture has authority, and tradition has authority. When the Pope speaks as the Pope, he is infallible and has ultimate authority. In contrast, we believe that Matthew 16 (and Matthew 18:18) gives the keys to Peter, but in the context of the congregation of the church, not resting in one man. The Council of Trent – The counter reformation – The Roman Catholic church had a discussion on the role of the church compared to Scripture. There was a latin phrase changed from partem partem to et. The nuance was fine, but substantial. John J. laments that in response to the holy view of the church in Roman Catholicism, people have swung too far the other way throwing away creeds and confessions that are extremely helpful to the church body. Item 3 we discussed Why is it important to discuss this? On Long Island, the beliefs of Roman Catholicism is a major roadblock to true faith. Where is the Good News? You have to continually do the sacraments to have a chance to go to heaven. The purgatory doctrine in Roman Catholicism also seems to create a sort of universalism. The Reformers believed the papacy to be an antichrist. It is also important to talk about this because, for the most part,

HOLINESS – SIN & SANCTIFICATION – EPISODE 2 IN THIS EPISODE… 01:19 We discuss today’s topics – Holiness: Sin and Sanctification We start by trying to flesh out a definition of holiness God is Holy, but the Old Testament ascribes Holiness to a bunch of other things like ground, bread, etc. It is decided that holiness is a set apartness. As we are to be holy, we are to be set apart, consecrated, for the service to God. Between holiness, sin, and sanctification, people and the church take some more seriously than other. People can sometimes use sanctification as an excuse. “Well, I sin, but God is still working on me.” Part of sanctification is growing in our hatred of sin. As we are more sanctified, how we respond to sin will change as we’ll grieve and mourn over our sin more as we become more holy. Holy comes from an ancient word that means cut apart or a cut above. Separate from the world as Israel was called to look different from the world. 09:31 Segment 1 begins Why are we talking about holiness in a discipleship podcast? The intentional relationship about which we talked in our first episode, the point is to grow in holiness and obedience. . We walk through Ephesians 4:17-24 to show a little about holiness. We are commanded to walk no longer as the gentiles. We are not to be futile minded and have our understanding darkened. We use a number of Scripture to help avoid the trap of being “Holier than thou”. We are not longer to supposed to walk as “those people” but also, as we once were. The only difference between them and us is we have Christ. Paul is assuming discipleship is going on. You can see that in verses 22 to 24. Here, he introduces the concept of putting off the former life and putting on the new life. This is a big reason why we need discipleship. We need to know what to put off, and then, what to put on. For instance, if you live a life marked by lying, you need to stop lying. However, that is not enough. You need to then start telling the truth. The team discusses how people today focus so much on God being love that they lose sight of His holiness. Maybe that comes from our fear of God’s holiness. We look at the story of Jesus and His disciples on a boat in the Sea of Galilee where Jesus calms the storm and how the disciples seem to be more frightened of the holiness of this man Jesus, and less afraid of the storm. 23:44 Segment 2 begins We continue looking at our flippant attitude towards sin. Discipleship is helping each other become more holy. How we will deal with sin will change as we grow. The discipleship relationship allows us to have someone of the outside looking in to help us deal with sin. We disciss the tendancy we have to focus on a single attribute of God to the determent of the rest of His attributes. John J. talks about how in an effort to balance out the world focusing on God’s love, he tries too hard to focus on God’s holiness. This makes it difficult to have the loving relationship that God wants us to have with Him. It is pointed out this is why it is important that Christians preach the gospel to themselves as well as others. In Ephesians 4:11-15, Paul talks about various gifts to equip the saints for work on ministry to build up the body of Christ. This is why it is important to use your gifts. Even if you think they are not useful, God uses these gifts to edify the body and help them conform into the likeness of Christ. So why is this important? We need to grow in holiness to keep us from being tossed to and fro by false doctrine and the cunnings on man. 36:40 Segment 3 begins The team spends time discussing sanctification and the difference between definitive and progressive sanctification.li> The discussion turns to our response to sin during our sanctification and how the Bible is the best diagnostic tool to help other people see their sin..

That discussion was expanded to discipleship being a partner of evangelism and using discipleship to hedge against a growing influence of the secular world. John C. gave a viewpoint from growing up in the church as opposed to the secular childhood the others had. The team discussed the difference between discipleship and fellowship and specific markers of a discipleship relationship. James offered a working definition of discipleship as “The intentional encouragement of Christians on the basis of deliberate, loving relationships and training in God’s Word. The team began to discuss what a discipleship relationship looks like. They discuss using each of our gifts for the edification of the body of Christ, and how no one is better than anyone else. 13:32 Segment 2 begins We expand upon what a discipleship relationship looks like and begin the discussion on why discipleship is important. Sorry about the slip up Canada! 23:41 Segment 3 begins and we immediately run into a shameless plea for a 5 star rating on iTunes. You can do that by clicking below!. We spend this time trying to address objections and excuses people give why they are not in a discipleship relationship. There is a discussion on the organic nature of relationship and John J. embarrasses himself by telling a story at his failed attempt to begin a bromance. It is determined that it’s important for discipleship to be part of the church culture. Lack of time is cited as an excuse and the team discussed technology to help alleviate that. Ultimately, we make time for things that we want to do, and bringing Glory to God should be our highest want. Fear is discussed as another obstacle to discipling. 35:55 Segment 4 begins Wrapping up the podcast, the team discusses the spiritual disciplines and encouragement.
