    George Hassell: The Family Axeman

On the evening of December 24, 1926, a farmer in Farwell, Texas, called the sheriff to report that his neighbor, George Hassell, had been acting very strangely in recent days and he had been telling conflicting stories about the whereabouts of his family, who had been missing for several days. When the sheriff arrived at the Hassell farm, he began questioning George about where his family had gone, but mid conversation, Hassell removed a pocket knife from his pocket and stabbed himself three times in the chest.  Hassell was taken to the hospital, where he was not expected to survive, but against the odds, George pulled through. With no option for escape and having given law enforcement good reason to suspect him in the disappearance of his family, George began confessing to multiple murders. At first, it was assumed he had flown into a rage and murdered his family a week earlier, but the more Hassell talked, the clearer it became that George Hassell violent and murderous behavior went well beyond the walls of his home in Farwell. For nearly fifty years, one family owned the same historic building in the middle of town. Over the decades they repaired it, protected it, and passed it from one generation to the next. Along with the building came one strange family tradition that no one could fully explain. The attic door was never supposed to be locked. When the newest owner modernized the building, he ignored the old rule. It seemed like common sense—every other door had a deadbolt, so why should the attic be any different?Within days, he began hearing someone working in the workshop after the building had closed for the night. Drawers opened. Tools slid across the old workbench. The wooden stool creaked beneath invisible weight. Every sound stopped the moment the attic was unlocked. It wasn't until his father admitted the noises had been happening for generations that he realized some family traditions aren't meant to be questioned.#GhostStory #HauntedAttic #Paranormal #FamilyHaunting #TrueGhostStory #HauntedWorkshop #Supernatural #Unexplained #SmallTownHauntings #GhostEncounter #HauntedBuilding Love real ghost stories? Many people know the term “bipolar disorder,” but few understand what mania actually looks like, how depression presents, or why recognizing the warning signs can be so difficult. In this episode, host Gabe Howard sits down with ADAA (Anxiety and Depression Association of America) Member expert Bruce M. Cohen, MD, PhD. Dr. Cohen is a psychiatrist, Harvard Medical School professor, and former president and psychiatrist-in-chief of McLean Hospital. Together, they break down the realities of bipolar disorder, including the differences between bipolar I, bipolar II, and cyclothymia. Listeners will learn: how some risk-taking behaviors could be warning signs how distinguishing bipolar from personality traits requires careful evaluation how caregivers need support and self-care to be effective They also tackle an important question: When is someone simply energetic, dramatic, or outgoing — and when could those traits point to a mental health condition? Using real-world examples and decades of clinical experience, Dr. Cohen explains how mental health professionals distinguish personality from illness. If you've ever wondered what bipolar disorder really looks like — or how to help someone who may be struggling — this episode is for you. We would like to thank McLean Hospital for providing educational support for this episode. “I've been doing this for 50 years and I've focused on psychotic disorders and bipolar disorders. [. . .] Most of them lead good lives and they're successful.” ~Bruce M. Cohen, MD, PhD Our guest, Bruce M. Cohen, MD, PhD, is the Robertson-Steele Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and President/Psychiatrist-in-Chief Emeritus at McLean Hospital. Currently, as Director of the Program for Neuropsychiatric Research at McLean/Mass General Brigham, he leads a consortium using cell culture, genomic, pharmacologic, brain imaging, and clinical studies to increase understanding and develop new treatments for psychiatric disorders. This work is particularly focused on identifying inherent factors that might be modulated to reduce the risk of illness. Convergent evidence from these studies highlights key factors underlying risk for illness, prominently including abnormalities of energy production and brain cell growth and maturation. These abnormalities affect brain development, brain remodeling during adolescence, and brain repair with age. In addition, his work has documented evidence-based dimensional approaches for diagnosing psychiatric disorders that describe each person seeking treatment more accurately and thoroughly than standard diagnostic models. Collaborating investigators work at McLean, the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT, and international sites. Following undergraduate studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and graduate (molecular genetic) and medical studies at Case Western Reserve University, Dr. Cohen completed his residency training at McLean. He was co-founder of a Clinical Research Center, founding Director of McLean's Brain Imaging Center, and director of McLean's Residency Training Program, and a Vice President at McLean, before becoming President and Psychiatrist-in-Chief of the hospital. Under his leadership, McLean, which was struggling financially, established over 30 new programs, became financially stable and grew to treat more patients, perform more research, and teach more trainees than at any time in its distinguished history. He has taught locally, at McLean, Harvard Medical School, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as well as lecturing nationally and worldwide to academic and lay audiences. He has directed continuously funded translational research projects and centers for 48 years.  Dr. Cohen has over 400 publications and 5 awarded patents.  He authored one popular book for lay audiences and has chapters in 19 textbooks. He has consulted to industry and clinical centers. He has been featured in national publications as one of the best doctors in America, been named Psychiatrist of the Year twice by the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Massachusetts, and has won awards for research, teaching, and clinical care. Our host, Gabe Howard, is an award-winning writer and speaker who lives with bipolar disorder. He is the author of the popular book, "Mental Illness is an Asshole and other Observations," available from Amazon; signed copies are also available directly from the author. Gabe is also the host of the "Inside Bipolar" podcast with Dr. Nicole Washington. Gabe makes his home in the suburbs of Columbus, Ohio. Basic qualifications include: Credit score of 680+ Existing credit lines (at least $10,000) A clear business mission and low-risk profile. Avoiding Scams Beware of unsolicited emails/texts promising easy money. Do your homework: Check companies on Better Business Bureau (BBB). Look for testimonials and partnerships with reputable banks (e.g., Chase, American Express). Never share sensitive information without verifying legitimacy. Importance of a Business Plan Funding is not free money—you need a strategic plan. Katrina calls it a “money mission”: know exactly how funds will be deployed. Without a plan, money disappears quickly, leading to debt and bad credit. Family & Friends Lending Treat personal loans like business loans: Have written agreements with terms, repayment schedule, and penalties. Decide upfront if it’s a gift or a loan. Services Offered by New Day for You Financial SBA loans, equipment loans, purchase order financing. Lines of credit and 0% interest credit cards (18–21 months). Credit card stacking for higher funding amounts. Credit restoration referrals for those with poor credit. Success Story Example: A tax accountant secured $160,000 in less than a week due to strong credit, revenue history, and a solid business plan. Notable Quotes “If you don’t have a plan for your money, your money will have a plan—and you’ll look up and it’s gone.” “We don’t want to be out here racking up good debt and then you’re not going to be responsible.” “You have to vet companies. Go to BBB, Google them, and check their credibility.” “If I give you money, I decide—is it a gift or a loan? There are rules to borrowing money.” “We say if you don’t get anything, we don’t get paid.” #SHMS #STRAW #BESTSteve Harvey Morning Show Online: http://www.steveharveyfm.com/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Luis Romero didn't just try heroin. He fell in love with it. That love affair started in his teens and followed him straight into adulthood, into gang life, and into four felonies.By the time he was sentenced to five years in prison, Luis thought a behavioral modification program was his way out. It wasn't. He got out, relapsed, and ended up at Freedom Ranch in San Diego, the place that finally gave him a program that stuck. He started over with nothing. Dishwashing shifts. Three years riding the bus because he couldn't afford a car. No shortcuts, just the slow work of rebuilding a life from scratch.Fourteen years later, Luis hosts the Fuck Fentanyl podcast and works at the same Freedom Ranch that gave him his start. "MK Confidential" continues its deep dive into the murder of JonBenét Ramsey, the case that gripped America and fueled nearly 30 years of obsession. It is still the day after Christmas, 1996, but by early afternoon the kidnapping no longer makes sense: no phone call ever comes, no intruder is in sight, and only the Ramsey family is known to have been inside the home the night JonBenét died. Megyn Kelly follows the investigation as it turns inward: the ransom note written on the family's own notepad, the demand that nearly matched John's bonus, the bowl of pineapple, the disputed handwriting, the detective certain a parent did it, and the FBI profiler who reads the very same evidence as the work of an intruder. At the age of 15, the filmmaker and actor Kyla Harris had an accident that forever changed what her body could do, and what it couldn't. From then on, she needed someone with her 24 hours a day to help her with things like going to the bathroom, cooking and showering.  Family members, friends, romantic partners and personal assistants have all played a role in Kyla's care over the years. She's had to learn to communicate, in exceptionally clear terms, how her body feels and what it needs, at any hour of the day or night.  Kyla is a creator and the star of the BBC TV show “We Might Regret This,” and her character, Freya, has the same disability that Kyla does. While the show depicts a fictional world, its complex web of remarkably close, interdependent relationships is, in part, inspired by Kyla's life. In this episode of “Modern Love,” Kyla tells Anna Martin what it's been like to approach every want and need as a group project. This dynamic becomes especially interesting when it comes to Kyla's thriving sex life, from dance-floor makeouts to long-term partnerships. Kyla discusses getting creative with her body — and the occasional prop —  and takes a deep dive into what intimacy can really mean.   How to submit a Modern Love EssayHow to submit a Tiny Love Story Subscribe today at nytimes.com/podcasts or on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.        Populous architecture in KC has released a "legend" of where the Royals new ballpark will be located and what will surround it.  It's part of an effort to rezone the entire area and will be featured at a public meeting Monday night.  This is far from anything final but I've got the details on what looks like an incredible development and area for baseball.  It could wind up being the best place for baseball in America!     It's hard to believe but your humble host got a really nice shout out on social media from none other than Mayor Q.  I'll fill you in.    A huge voter fraud story has been released in New Jersey about thousands of illegal aliens that became eligible to vote even though they checked a box they were not citizens.  And... it's been released by a Democrat.  This should be the breakthrough that breaks the dam for the SAVE America Act.   Jonathan Cain, from the band Journey, wrote the song Don't Stop Believin' and he has just unloaded on Bruce Springsteen. This is really good.    A major league player fouls a pitch off his body and winds up having a surgery I've never heard of.  You have to hear  this.     The Chiefs report to camp Friday, Eli Drinkwitz makes fun of Kansas on a national radio show, Aaron Rodgers is back in the fold with his family and a star from the Yellowstone spinoff is a whiny old man.

We talk about healing as though it's inevitable. As though proximity to Scripture, therapy language, or Christian community automatically produces transformation. But God does not force anyone into wholeness. He invites. He confronts. He calls. And too many believers confuse awareness with growth. This week on Win Today, Debra Fileta joins me for a sober conversation about emotional health and spiritual maturity. We examine why so many Christians remain emotionally immature while sounding spiritually fluent, how "trauma-informed" has in some circles become trauma-defined identity, and why you cannot become spiritually mature if your mental and emotional life is neglected. Healing is not passive. It is participatory. If your faith is sincere but your reactions are volatile… if you know the right language but keep repeating the same patterns… or if you've mistaken self-protection for self-awareness, this episode will clarify what real growth actually requires. Guest Bio Debra Fileta is a Licensed Professional Counselor specializing in relationship, marital, mental, and emotional health. She is the author of five books, host of the Love + Relationships Podcast, and founder of TrueLoveDates.com, a widely read relationship advice platform reaching millions worldwide. You've been telling yourself the same story. That you need more money to start. That you need the perfect plan before you move. That fear is the reason you're stuck. Here's the truth: the only thing holding you back is the belief that something outside of you has to change before you can begin. Robert Herjavec went from arriving in America with nothing to building and selling companies worth hundreds of millions of dollars. He's one of the most recognizable faces on Shark Tank, and in this episode, he breaks down the exact mindset shifts that turned urgency into wealth, why most people quit before they compound, and the leadership mistake that quietly destroys great companies. From structuring earnouts with no money down to scaling a $400 million business without raising a dime, Robert reveals the frameworks that separate people who stay broke from people who build empires. In this episode, you'll learn: Why fear is what holds most people back and how the fear of hard work without guaranteed results is the real killer, not the work itself The poverty versus wealth mindset: why working to make a living keeps you stuck and how shifting to building wealth changes everything How Robert bought 13 businesses with no outside funding using earnouts, seller financing, and cash flow leverage, and why you don't need money in the bank to do deals The biggest mistake founders make when pitching: asking people to listen instead of making them want to hear, and why humility and subconscious alignment close deals before you even open your mouth How to value a company the right way: understanding industry multiples, EBITDA, and why people fail because they price based on what they need instead of what the business is worth Stop waiting for permission. Stop waiting for certainty. The life you want is on the other side of the decision you're avoiding. My new book, Own Or Be Owned, is all about building a business so good it doesn't need you. Drop us some Fan Mail. Thanks! When we think about attachment in adoption and foster care, we usually focus on the child. But parents bring their own attachment histories and life experiences into the relationship as well. Dr. Chaitra Wirta-Leiker explores how a parent's past can shape their parenting, influence reactions to challenging behaviors, and impact family connection and healing. Dr. Wirta-Leiker is a licensed psychologist, transnational and transracial adoptee, adoptive parent, creator of the National Adoptee-Therapist Directory, and author of the Adoptees Like Me children's book series. In this episode, we discuss:When we talk about trauma and attachment in adoption and foster care, most of the focus tends to be on the child. Why is it equally important to explore the parents' history? What do parents sometimes miss about the role their own experiences play in parenting? Why can it feel uncomfortable or even threatening for parents to turn the lens inward rather than focusing exclusively on the child? Can you give us a working definition of what you mean by "attachment" so we are all on the same page? How does that relationship from our childhood influence our parenting style now? The 4 major adult attachment styles, and what do they look or feel like in our parent-child relationship:SecureAnxious/PreoccupiedAvoidant/DismissiveDisorganized/UnresolvedMany parents hear descriptions of attachment styles and immediately start self-diagnosing. Why is that unwise or unhelpful? And what do you want parents to understand about using these concepts as tools for growth rather than labels? How do unresolved childhood experiences or trauma shape our parenting responses? Our kids with their histories of trauma, attachment disruptions, grief, losses, and trauma often bring those into our relationships. When these histories intersect with our unresolved experiences, both parent and child can feel triggered. What are some common ways our history of trauma may get activated—or "triggered"—by our adopted or foster children? How can we talk to ourselves when we feel that activation happening? Scripts we can use or messaging we can rehearse? Are there certain child behaviors that tend to be especially activating for parents with unresolved attachment or trauma wounds? What is happening neurologically and emotionally when a parent feels disproportionately angry, hurt, rejected, or powerless in response to a child's behavior? Why do you think parenting in adoption and foster care is uniquely effective at exposing unresolved issues that a parent may not have known were there? How do our parental expectations—about bonding, gratitude, trust, or family life—sometimes become obstacles to connection? What are some signs we notice when we are responding from our own history rather than from what the child actually needs in the moment? What signs can we notice in our kids to help us see that we may be responding from our own histories? What does healthy self-awareness look like for adoptive and foster parents? When parents recognize their own triggers, what practical steps can they take in the moment? How can parents begin exploring their own attachment history safely and productively? Is it possible to move toward a more secure attachment style as an adult? If so, how does that happen? What's one question parents should ask themselves when they find themselves repeatedly stuck in conflict with their child?Where would you encourage parents to begin if today's conversation has raised some difficult but important self-reflection?Resources:Grow Beyond WordsUnderstanding Attachment Between Parent and ChildAdoptee and Foster Alum Voices resource pageTherapy Resources for Adoptive, Foster, and Kinship FamiliesSupport the showPlease leave us a rating or review.  This podcast is produced by www.CreatingaFamily.org. Keep winning! Two-time Emmy and Three-time NAACP Image Award-winning, television Executive Producer Rushion McDonald interviewed LaVashia Davis. Guest: LaVashia Davis, Founder of Ell Wess Advisors (boutique family office and wealth management firm)Host: Rushion McDonaldTopic: Building multigenerational wealth, family wealth planning, asset protection, and creating lasting legacies. Purpose of the Interview The interview focuses on helping first-generation wealth builders and entrepreneurs understand that wealth creation is about more than investments. Davis explains how families can organize, protect, grow, and transfer wealth across generations by treating their family finances as a structured enterprise rather than simply accumulating money. A central theme is that many successful individuals earn substantial incomes but lack a blueprint for preserving and transferring wealth. Davis advocates for intentional planning, legal structures, family involvement, and asset protection to create lasting legacies. Key Takeaways 1. Wealth Requires a Blueprint Davis explains that creating a legacy does not happen automatically. Families need a deliberate plan, legal structures, and defined roles if they want wealth to survive beyond one generation. [Lavashia D...(Podcast) | Txt] Takeaway: Making money and building wealth are not the same. Wealth requires systems and succession planning. 2. Family Should Be Treated as an Asset One of Davis's strongest messages is that family members can play meaningful roles in wealth-building efforts. She argues that when people think about legacy, they often overlook the importance of human relationships and family participation. Wealth-transfer strategies frequently require successors, trustees, managers, and beneficiaries. Many of those roles can be filled by family members. [Lavashia D...(Podcast) | Txt] Takeaway: Family can be a strategic asset when properly organized and aligned. 3. Not Every Family Member Contributes Equally Davis acknowledges that some family members may behave more like liabilities than assets. Using a balance-sheet analogy, she explains that every family includes both contributors and individuals who may create financial burdens. The key is identifying those dynamics without allowing them to derail long-term wealth planning. [Lavashia D...(Podcast) | Txt] Takeaway: Successful family wealth planning requires honest assessment of family dynamics. 4. Wealth Management Is More Than Investments Davis differentiates her firm's approach from traditional investment-focused advisory services. Her firm begins with: Family and wealth governance Legal structures Estate planning Tax planning Business succession planning Preparing future generations to inherit wealth Investments are addressed after these foundational elements are in place. [Lavashia D...(Podcast) | Txt] Takeaway: Investments should support a broader wealth strategy, not drive it. 5. "Your Family Is a Business" One of Davis's most memorable concepts is that families should think of themselves as enterprises. She advises clients to separate their “wealth business” from their personal household and to create structures that can survive beyond their lifetime. [Lavashia D...(Podcast) | Txt] Takeaway: Families should operate with the same intentionality that successful businesses use. 6. First-Generation Wealth Creates Unique Challenges Davis specializes in serving people who are the first high earners or successful entrepreneurs within their families. She notes that these individuals often face challenges that previous generations never had to navigate, including: Sudden financial complexity Family expectations Tax planning Asset protection Wealth transfer decisions [Lavashia D...(Podcast) | Txt] Takeaway: New wealth requires new skills and specialized guidance. 7. There Are Four Forms of Capital Davis identifies four sources of capital: Human Capital – people, family, relationships Intellectual Capital – knowledge and expertise Social Capital – networks and connections Financial Capital – money and assets She argues that most families focus only on financial capital while neglecting the others. [Lavashia D...(Podcast) | Txt] Takeaway: Wealth is broader than money. 8. Asset Protection Is Essential Davis warns that unprotected assets can disappear quickly due to lawsuits, business failures, creditor claims, or debt obligations. She emphasizes the importance of proper ownership structures, legal entities, and asset protection strategies. [Lavashia D...(Podcast) | Txt] Takeaway: Wealth must be protected as carefully as it is created. 9. Different Advisors Serve Different Stages of Wealth When McDonald asks how people should evaluate their current financial advisor, Davis provides a thoughtful perspective: An advisor who helped someone build their first million dollars may not be the right advisor to help them grow to ten million dollars. Increased wealth often brings more complexity and a need for broader expertise. [Lavashia D...(Podcast) | Txt] Takeaway: Financial advisory needs evolve as wealth grows. Notable Quotes On Family and Legacy "Your family is your God-given team, not your liability." [Lavashia D...(Podcast) | Txt] On Wealth Planning "When you say that you want to build something that's long lasting or you want to create a legacy for children, there's a blueprint that needs to be followed." [Lavashia D...(Podcast) | Txt] On Family Dynamics "Your family even has a balance sheet when it comes to assets and liabilities." [Lavashia D...(Podcast) | Txt] On Financial Complexity "My particular mission is the first-generation families who want to make an exponential difference in their families." [Lavashia D...(Podcast) | Txt] On Her Approach "We don't begin with investments. We begin by stabilizing and creating a way that you really want to operate your wealth business." [Lavashia D...(Podcast) | Txt] On Family Wealth "Your family and your finances are definitely a business." [Lavashia D...(Podcast) | Txt] On Wealth Building "Your family is in the business of growing the value of your last name. Period." [Lavashia D...(Podcast) | Txt] On Capital "The four sources of capital are human capital, intellectual capital, social capital, and financial capital." [Lavashia D...(Podcast) | Txt] On Asset Protection "The wealth you build can be taken if it's not protected." [Lavashia D...(Podcast) | Txt] On Advisor Selection "The advisor that may have gotten you to your first million... may not be the advisor that can get you to ten million." [Lavashia D...(Podcast) | Txt] Overall Message Lavashia Davis's core message is that wealth is not simply about earning or investing money—it is about building systems, structures, and family alignment that allow wealth to endure across generations. By treating the family as an asset, activating multiple forms of capital, protecting assets legally, and planning intentionally, families can transform income into legacy. #SHMS #BEST #STRAWSupport the show: https://www.steveharveyfm.com/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today's Headlines: Kash Patel scheduled a trip to Russia in October with no disclosed agenda or meeting list, which is a perfectly normal thing for the FBI director to do while leading an agency that investigates Russian interference. In tariff news, Trump dropped new tariffs on Canada — specifically cars, alcohol, cheese, and hockey sticks — on products covered by the USMCA trade deal he negotiated himself in 2020 and called "the best deal ever," though they don't kick in for 30 days so this is probably a stunt. Meanwhile, the cyclospora lettuce saga got weirder when the FDA announced the positive test on Taylor Farms lettuce was a "false positive" — conveniently after Taylor Farms donated a million dollars to Trump's super PAC in 2025, six days after the FDA delayed food traceability rules that would have applied to companies like Taylor Farms, and one day after Taylor Farms executives met with senior FDA officials before issuing their voluntary recall and blaming Taco Bell, so the whole thing smells like something other than lettuce. On ICE, the FBI will no longer investigate confrontations between ICE agents and civilians — essentially eliminating the only oversight ICE was ever exposed to — with responsibility for investigating ICE now falling to ICE itself, and traffic stops resuming less than 24 hours after DHS said they'd stop them. On a related press freedom note, the DOJ subpoenaed phone records of multiple New York Times journalists, at least two of their spouses, and one of their mothers, dating back to January 1st — long before their reporting on Trump's Qatari jet. A judge temporarily blocked the Paramount-Warner Brothers merger for two weeks, siding with 12 state attorneys general on antitrust grounds, which means Bari Weiss running CNN is on hold until at least August 3rd. On the election beat, Lindsey Graham's sister Darline — sworn in less than two weeks after her brother died — announced on Sean Hannity that she's running for the full six-year term, citing "inner peace," which is one way to process grief. And finally, on a genuinely positive note, Senator Andy Kim introduced MediKIDS, legislation that would automatically enroll every child at birth in health insurance through age 26, covering 4.4 million uninsured kids.
