From bar-hopping at CMA Fest with Jason Aldean's band to scheduled high school fights at 3 pm sharp, this episode of Try That in a Small Town is all about chaos, consequences, and the crazy ways we somehow survive it all. The guys kick things off with surgery scars, locked-up backs, and near misses in the garage, then pivot into behind-the-scenes CMA Fest stories, in-ear monitor nightmares, and why late-night stadium sets grind down even veteran players. They talk Morgan Wallen flipping pianos and throwing phones, Taylor Swift's historic new country single tied to Toy Story 5, and how modern country production has become so “perfect” it's almost personality-free. Things get heavier when they unpack the Carmelo Anthony/Austin Metcalf stabbing at a track meet, race narratives in the media, and what real self-defense is—and isn't—when someone pulls a knife. They contrast that with a powerful small-town hero story: a Gwinnett County officer who saves a 7-year-old launched through a windshield. In classic TTIAST fashion, the crew rounds it out with songwriting pet peeves, delusional DMs from strangers wanting co-writes and video calls, bullying stories that still haunt them, and how golf, TV binges, and pizza reviews are getting them through recovery. 01:30 Surgeries, brutal bruises, allergic reactions to bandages and upcoming product bans in Tennessee 04:40 Locked-up back on the toilet, crawling across the house and day-three recovery status 06:30 Surviving CMA Fest: bar crawl sets, in-ear monitor disasters and playing blind on stage 09:45 Bar energy vs stadium distance and podcast fans popping up at shows 11:15 Late-night stadium headlining slot, fried fans, and what TV does to show times 14:00 Original Glory and Patriot Mobile sponsor segments 15:10 Learning piano one-handed after surgery, Jingle Bells, and mining TV shows for song ideas 17:50 TV recs: Life After Lockup, The Invisible Pilot, and Cape Fear reboot 20:20 NBA and Stanley Cup talk: Knicks' huge comeback, Wembanyama, and why some tuned out the NBA 22:45 Trump at the Garden, celebrity courtside culture, and politics vs respect for the office 24:40 Taylor Swift's Toy Story 5 country single and the business behind her return to the format 29:00 Why modern country records all sound the same and the few acts still using their own bands 31:40 Morgan Wallen: “I Ain't Coming Back” lyric love, phone toss, piano flip and Billy Joel's defense 36:30 Wild private plane trip with Morgan Wallen, crass “rich buddies” and what stuck with Kalo 38:20 Post-surgery meds, apologizing to Neil, and the nurse/dong/stripper one-liner 41:10 Group shave before a heart cath and hospital humor 42:00 CMA Fest nights with Luke Bryan at his bar, tequila overload and four-day hangovers 44:10 Dipshits of the week: insane video chat requests, song pitches, and social media entitlement 47:00 Fans demanding co-writes and “brain picking” vs actually earning a seat at the table 50:40 The worst song “idea” ever: Cats in the Cradle… but backwards 55:00 Young writers sliding into DMs, asking for writes and coffees, and basic industry etiquette 58:40 Nearly gassing yourself in a closed garage while checking mixes: calling dipshit on yourself 1:01:40 Drone-rescue story: Apache down, surviving in the water and next-level military tech 1:05:30 Golf injuries, steroids on the road, and fighting to stay in playing shape 1:07:10 The Carmelo Anthony–Austin Metcalf stabbing: facts, sentencing and race narratives 1:12:10 Media framing, self-defense vs murder, and how race gets injected into every case 1:16:00 Scheduled school fights at the park, bus brawls and why nobody brought knives back then 1:19:40 Getting drilled in the face for knocking a kid's basketball away: lesson learned 1:20:30 One cold jab to the nose and understanding when you've gone too far 1:22:10 The bully who made you fast: getting wrecked in pickup football and later asking for tickets 1:24:20 Small Town Big Story: Officer Ariana James saves a 7-year-old thrown from a truck in Gwinnett County 1:26:10 Closing: Peacemaker Coffee, shoutout to listener Ed, scheduled fights and listener call-to-action ______________________________________________________________________________________________SPONSORS: The Try That in a Small Town Podcast is powered by e|spaces!Redefining Coworking - Exceptional Office Space for Every BusinessBook a tour today at espaces.comFrom the Patriot Mobile studios:Don't get fooled by other cellular providers pretending to share your values or have the same coverage. Adam revisits James Gunn's Superman one year after its release and looks at how it holds up as DC heads toward Supergirl. We discuss why the movie's relentlessly positive take on Superman works, why the character needed to be rebuilt before being deconstructed, and how David Corenswet's Superman fits into a modern, complicated world without losing the “big blue boy scout” core. Adam also talks through the film's weaker third act, the Superman clone problem, the hypno-glasses explanation, and the standout Mr. Terrific sequence. From there, the discussion shifts to DC Studios' bigger issue: the messy selective continuity left behind by The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker, Amanda Waller, Rick Flag, Harley Quinn, and the old DCEU baggage James Gunn's reboot still has not fully escaped.

Chairman Jason Smith of the House Ways and Means Committee joins the Try That In A Small Town podcast from CMA Fest in Nashville. He breaks down what the powerful Ways and Means Committee actually does and how it touches every American's life through taxes, trade, Social Security, Medicare, and more. Jason opens up about his small-town Missouri roots, being a fourth-generation farmer, raising white buffalo, and why he still lives in the same rural community he represents. He explains how he took the Ways and Means Committee on the road to 32 states to listen to working families, small businesses, and farmers before writing what he calls the “Big Beautiful Bill” – the largest tax cut in U.S. history, including no tax on tips and overtime. The conversation gets candid on Social Security's future, election integrity and slow vote counts in places like California, and what happens when people lose trust in the system. Jason also shares behind-the-scenes stories of working closely with President Trump – from grilling him for three hours on every line of a 103-title tax bill in the Oval Office to the now-famous “red button” that just orders Diet Coke. Along the way, they talk CMA Fest, Jason's obsession with Reba, the Chiefs, Mahomes vs. Brady, cleaning up Washington, D.C., and why he believes the founding fathers' values are really small-town values. Jason closes with a powerful story of a single mom whose $10,000 tax refund changed her life – and why that's why he still fights for small towns and working families. Timed highlights 2:00 Who is Chairman Jason Smith and what is the Ways and Means Committee? 5:13 CMA Fest, first concerts, and Jason's country music roots 7:11 The Ozarks, one of America's poorest districts, and small-town values 8:14 Reba superfan stories and being starstruck in DC 10:02 How the guys first met Jason at the South Dakota Governor's Hunt 11:49 Nashville's Bluebird Café, songwriting, and music in DC 13:06 Jason's priorities: working families, small businesses, and farmers 14:19 White buffalo, donkeys named Bill, Hillary, Chelsea, and Hunter 15:29 Growing up poor in a trailer, farm life, and why that shapes his politics 19:15 Taking Ways and Means to 32 states and writing the “Big Beautiful Bill” 20:20 No tax on tips, no tax on overtime, and tax ideas from real Americans 22:06 Social Security history, FDR, and why both parties will keep it 23:35 Will Social Security ever go away? This conversation explored how politics and faith can both serve the common good—politics by organizing our shared life and religion by bringing people together. Centered on the teaching of Jesus, George emphasized that while ideas and information matter, lasting transformation come through love and peacemaking that treats others with dignity. Peacemakers are people who enter life's conflicts carrying "water for the fire," creatively holding tension, building bridges, and trusting that love has the power to change people and communities.

Matthew 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. Romans 12:18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. 1. Predetermine to be a peacemaker Definition of peacemaker: Eirēnopoios Eirene = peace or wholeness Poieo = to make, to do, or to create A peacemaker chooses to be a BRIDGE of reconciliation to people who DON'T KNOW peace to a GOD WHO IS peace. John 13:35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. Romans 12:9-21 “Marks of a True Christian” Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. 2. Practically be a peacemaker Matthew 5:47 If you are kind only to your friends, how are you different from anyone else? Even pagans do that. 3. Portray the original Peacemaker Matthew 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.Romans 15:5-6 May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Isaiah 26:3 You keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.

Pastor Jim examines a period of peace and transition in the life of the biblical figure Abraham from Genesis 21. He focuses on a specific narrative where Abraham enters into a covenant with King Abimelech, emphasizing the importance of believers acting as peacemakers within their local communities and the state. Pastor Jim highlights how Abraham uses generosity and honest communication to resolve a dispute over a well, suggesting that modern Christians should similarly strive for harmonious and generous relationships with those outside the church. He also encourages the congregation to utilize times of relative calm to strengthen their faith by drawing deeply from the "well" of scripture. Ultimately, he presents these peaceful intervals as essential opportunities for spiritual preparation and establishing a resilient identity in God's grace before future trials arise. Support the showThanks for listening! As a teenager, he shipped out on a freighter, hitchhiked through the Algerian Revolution, helped make the first ascent of Denali's dangerous North Wall, and reported from war zones around the world. His quest for excitement eventually led him to serve as a U.S. Foreign Service officer in Libya, Vietnam, and at the United Nations. But it was during the Vietnam War that John experienced a profound awakening that forced him to confront the emptiness behind a life spent chasing danger. That turning point set him on a new path—one focused on service, justice, and helping others create meaningful change. John discusses the lessons he learned from surviving life-threatening situations, the search for purpose, his role in international peace efforts, and the inspiration behind the Giraffe Heroes Project, which honors people who courageously "stick their necks out" to make the world a better place. This powerful conversation explores courage, transformation, purpose, and the enduring impact of choosing service over self-interest. Full post: https://www.yourradicaltruth.com/053-John-Graham

Have you ever been in a conversation and realized somewhere along the way you completely checked out? Not because you wanted to, but because your wiring just took you somewhere else? That's what this episode is about. Jason VanRuler is back as co-host, and together he and Candace break down what happens when each of the five PATHS communication types disengage. Not through open conflict or blowups — the quieter drift that happens when a Peacemaker decides it is not worth it, when a Thinker goes silent and starts cycling inward, or when a Harbor abandons themselves by over-functioning for everyone else. Candace talks openly about parenting teenagers and what it took to remember she was the adult in the room, even when the room was loud. Jason shares what it looks like when couples call him months after an intensive counseling session, having slid back into the same patterns that brought them in the first time. Connection, he says, is not something you tend to reactively. It is something you build consistently, and every PATHS type has a particular way of falling off that path. There are four listener questions in this episode, and they are honest ones: about anger that feels like it comes out of nowhere, about walls built to protect and then impossible to take down, about keeping a marriage strong when your husband is gone for twelve-plus hours a day. Candace shares what 30 years of marriage actually looks like, including the truth that not every day is a great day, and why two willing people might be the only real secret there is. What if the reason your closest relationships feel stuck isn't about how much you care — but about how differently you and the people you love communicate? Today, I sit down with Jason VanRuler, therapist, Enneagram Two, and author of Discovering Your Communication Type: The 5 Paths to Deeper Connection and Stronger Relationships, as he introduces us to his P.A.T.H.S. framework — five communication styles he identified through years of working with couples navigating betrayal, teams in conflict, and individuals trying to understand why the same words land so differently depending on who's in the room. Those five types: the Peacemaker, the Advocate, the Thinker, the Harbor, and the Spark.  The nine Enneagram types map fascinatingly onto these five communication styles, and we walk through each type together. We talk about blind spots (every communication style has one), what happens to our style under stress and in conflict, and why the most generous thing you can do in any relationship is learn to speak your people's language rather than demanding they speak yours. Jason also shares honestly from his own marriage — he's a Harbor married to a Thinker — and what changed when he learned to stop reading his wife's precision questions as opposition and started hearing them as her version of love. Whether you're an Enneagram enthusiast, a couples therapist, a team leader, or just someone who's tired of feeling unseen in conversations, this episode is for you.

If you grew up being the one who kept everyone calm, you didn't choose it. It was assigned to you. And the role you played as a child often becomes the role you play everywhere — at work, in relationships, in friendships. Today I want to talk about what it actually costs to be the family peacemaker. Why your nervous system probably still scans every room. Why you can't relax when other people are tense. Why "I'm fine, don't worry about me" comes out of your mouth before you've even checked whether it's true. And what it might look like to gently put the job down. Ready to break the cycle for good? Have you ever known something was broken in a relationship but had no idea how to say what you actually needed to fix it? That's where so many of us get stuck. This week, Candace and communication coach Jason VanRuler move from understanding the PATHS types to putting them to work, starting with a listener question about a family conflict that has been festering for twenty years. Jason reframes the whole thing: the problem is rarely that people won't talk. It's that they don't know what they need in order to move forward. The conversation moves through how each communication type engages with conflict, from the Peacemaker who needs reassurance that the relationship will survive the hard conversation, to the Advocate who can throw the whole relationship away for the win, to the Thinker who arrives with a trolley of evidence, to the Harbor who creates so much space for feelings that the conflict never actually gets resolved, to the Spark who surprises everyone when the intensity finally breaks. Jason also addresses what to do when the other person simply is not willing, and how to tell the difference between what we want and what we actually need. Two more listener questions round out the episode: a mom whose first-grade son keeps getting excluded, and a teenage girl named Blythe navigating anxiety. Jason's answer to both comes back to the same thing. Confidence rooted in identity. When we know who we are and what we stand for, rejection still hurts, but it doesn't define us. And for the teenage girl spinning in worry? Noting the anxiety and then redirecting that energy somewhere useful turns out to be far more effective than overthinking it. Conflict provides a unique opportunity to honor God. Proverbs 15:1 reveals that a gentle answer turns away wrath, while harsh words fuel quarrels. Navigating tension with biblical wisdom transforms difficult moments into paths for reconciliation. Implementing the four G's—Glorify God, Get the log out of the eye, Gently restore, and Go and be reconciled—fosters healthy connections. Selfishness often hinders peace, but following the example of Jesus brings restoration.   Pastor: Enos Marshall Series: Better Together (7) Title: Cooperation (Proverbs 15:1) Date: 2026.05.30+31   LINKS:

Pastor Seth Troutt continues our series, **“The Blessed Life,”** by unpacking Jesus' words, *“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God”* (Matthew 5:9). In a world filled with conflict, gossip, and division, what does it actually mean to resemble our Father in heaven by making peace?Drawing from Scripture and everyday life, Pastor Seth explores how true peacemaking begins with peace with God through Christ and then flows into our relationships—with friends, family, enemies, and even those who have deeply hurt us. He also contrasts real, costly peacemaking with both destructive conflict and a shallow “peace, peace” that ignores reality.Whether you struggle with conflict avoidance, anger, gossip, or just feel overwhelmed by broken relationships, this message will help you see both the hope and the responsibility of living as a peacemaker.---⏱️ **Message Outline****00:00 – Introduction**  Seth opens with a personal story about resembling his earthly father and connects it to how followers of Jesus are called to resemble their Father in heaven. He introduces Matthew 5:9 and frames the sermon around what it means to be a peacemaker in a fractured world.**03:54 – Anti-peace Makers**  Before defining biblical peacemaking, Seth looks at its opposites: gossip, slander, division, faction-building, and false “peace.” He shows how our culture often celebrates these patterns, and how even Christians can justify them. He also explains the danger of saying “peace, peace” when there is no peace, and how Jesus disrupts false peace in order to bring true reconciliation.**25:58 – The Ultimate Peacemaker**  Here Seth turns to Jesus as the model and source of all peacemaking. He walks through how Christ makes peace between God and people through the cross, and how Jesus brings peace to surprising groups: sellouts, outcasts, oppressors, obvious sinners, judgmental religious people, and even close friends who have failed Him. From 2 Corinthians 5, he explains our calling as ambassadors of reconciliation.**34:30 – Wisdom for Peacemaking**  In this final section, Seth offers practical, biblical wisdom for living as peacemakers: seeking first to understand, refusing one-sided narratives, resisting gossip, and doing “as far as it depends on you” to live at peace with others (Romans 12:18). He also addresses why we often struggle to make peace—our insecurity before God—and calls us back to the grace and security we have in Christ as the foundation for real peacemaking.---This message is part of **“The Blessed Life”** series through the Beatitudes, exploring what it truly means to live under the blessing of Jesus in everyday life.00:00 - Introduction03:54 - Anti-peace Makers25:58 - The Ultimate peacemaker34:30 - Wisdom for peacemaking**HOW TO FIND US*** SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YouTube CHANNEL: https://www.youtube.com/@IronwoodChurchAZFACEBOOK https://www.facebook.com/ironwoodchurchaz/ INSTAGRAM https://www.instagram.com/ironwood.church/WEBSITE https://www.ironwoodchurch.org/

Blessed are the peacemakers.” Listen, guys, I want to look at these words a little differently this morning. This may challenge the way you have always understood these words. This may be an absolute paradigm shift. But hang with me. Listen, guys, your biggest war is not with any person … any person. Not your ex-wife, not your political enemies, not your parents, not your boss, not the people who betrayed you. Your biggest war is with God. Your other resentments, rivalries, feuds, hatreds, wars … they all pale by comparison. And any real peacemaking is going to have to start right there: Peace with God. In fact, even peacemaking between men, if it is going to last, has to start with peace with God.

IS MONSTER PARTY HAVIN' A LAUGH? JAMES GONIS, SHAWN SHERIDAN, LARRY STROTHE, and MATT WEINHOLD ponder the age-old question of whether humor and genre topics can live and laugh comfortably together. So, as Elvis Costello might ask… WHAT'S SO FUNNY ABOUT HORROR, SCI-FI, AND FANTASY? Let's face it, making a truly funny horror, sci-fi, or fantasy film or television show can be tricky business. There's a fine line between a loving send-up and an uninformed attack. And even with the best intentions, that doesn't guarantee you'll be watching a knee-slapper. In this side-splitting study of genre jocularity, MONSTER PARTY puts all their funny favorites (and not-so-favorites) to the test. How did films like ABBOTT & COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN and YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN manage to find the sweet spot between over-the-top comedy and a loving homage to Universal horror films? Is SPACEBALLS a better film than we remember, or should we just push that reassessment aside and watch GALAXY QUEST instead? How do genre TV shows like RED DWARF and WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS generate laughs while presenting often thought-provoking horror and sci-fi concepts? Where do cult classics like DR. STRANGELOVE, REPO MAN, MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL, and THE ADVENTURES OF BUCKAROO BANZAI fit in? And are superhero vehicles like THE BOYS, PEACEMAKER, and the DEADPOOL film series the best comedies coming out of Hollywood today? Helping us answer these important questions while tickling our ribs in her own right is a return guest who is no stranger to the world of horror, sci-fi, and fantasy humor. She is a mega-talented writer who has worked on such beloved genre comedy projects as MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 and HANGING WITH DR. Z. Please welcome back… TAMMY GOLDEN! OH, AND YES, WE DID JUST WIN THE 2026 RONDO AWARD FOR BEST PODCAST! OUR HEARTFELT THANKS TO ALL THE MONSTER PARTIERS OUT THERE WHO HELPED MAKE THIS HAPPEN! NOW, LET'S START CANVASSING FOR 2027!

Have you ever walked away from a conversation feeling like the other person heard something completely different from what you said? That gap between what we want and what really happens is where so many of our hardest moments show up — in our marriages, with our kids, with the people we love most. This week, Candace sits down with licensed therapist, coach, and author Jason VanRuler to start a six-week series on the five communication types he outlines in his book "Discovering Your Communication Type." Right from the start, this one feels less like a lecture and more like finally getting words for something you've always sensed about yourself. Jason introduces the PATHS framework: Peacemaker, Advocate, Thinker, Harbor, and Spark — and the conversation digs into the first type: the Peacemaker. If you've ever found yourself working overtime to keep everyone okay, managing the energy in a room without anyone even knowing, this episode is going to feel very familiar. Jason shares how our communication types are often rooted in what we needed most as kids, and how the gift we give others is usually the gift we once longed for ourselves. A listener question from Bethany about her husband's phone use leads to one of the most practical moments in the episode — including a line from Jason that could genuinely shift a marriage: "If it matters to you, it matters to me."
