Dave Cooke is a seasoned business consultant and communication expert with a focus on improving listening behaviors. With over forty years of experience in sales, relationship development, and strategic advising, Dave excels in helping organizations and leaders enhance communication and problem-solving through his Selfless Listening program. This program aids in building trust, fostering better relationships, and promoting effective teamwork and collaboration. Additionally, Dave has successfully applied these techniques in assisting parents with children facing substance abuse challenges. His guiding principle, "open your eyes, ears, heart, and mind," underpins his belief that effective listening can transform interactions and relationships. Dave is also an accomplished podcaster, author, speaker, and executive coach Summary In this episode, Andrea and David Cooke discuss the importance of listening in effective communication. They explore the difference between listening and hearing, and the impact of technology on listening skills. They also discuss the power of nonverbal cues and the importance of silence in communication. Additionally, they share insights on effective communication in relationships and navigating communication challenges. The conversation explores the importance of creating a safe space for authenticity and active listening. It provides insights on improving listening skills in a Zoom era and being an active listener without a mirror. The conversation also discusses the significance of flipping the phone over as a signal of attention and the importance of being authentic in communication. Takeaways Listening is a key element in effective communication and building trust. Nonverbal cues, such as eye contact and facial expressions, play a crucial role in active listening. Technology can be a distraction in communication, and it is important to create boundaries to stay present in conversations. Internalizing information and demonstrating understanding are essential in effective listening. Effective communication in relationships requires understanding and respecting each other's communication styles and setting clear expectations. Create a safe space for others to be authentic by being authentic yourself. Practice active listening in virtual meetings by focusing on the other person's face and body language. Improve listening skills by avoiding distractions like phones and watches. Flipping the phone over can signal to the other person that you are giving them your full attention. Be authentic in your communication and don't try to be someone you're not. Disagreements – Episode #19 In This Episode... We have a special guest today. We welcome the Senior Pastor from our church, Calvary Baptist Church in Riverhead, NY, Dave Cooke. 01:38 – Segment 1 The discussion gets started in that disagreements in and of themselves are not bad. Iron sharpens iron is a well-known Scripture. However, that only happens when there is friction. How do we handle situations in which we have disagreements? The problem of disagreements is made worse and more public by social media. We will be talking about two general types of disagreement. Those that are theologically based and those that are not theologically based. In theological disagreements, we cannot disagree about the essentials. You can find a deeper treatment of the essentials in our previous podcast on Theology. Everything we do is in love. In everything, we need to be representing Christ and the Gospel. We discuss disagreements of doctrine that lies outside orthodoxy. There is a brief discussion on the Middle Ages and how they viewed orthodoxy. Are disagreements different with Christians and non-Christians? Both cases, we must represent the Gospel. There are three levels on disagreement in doctrinal matters: Essentials Non-Essentials that are discussed in Scripture but are unclear. Adiaphora that are not discussed in Scripture. ”The Peacemaker” by Ken Sande lays out a view of three options during a disagreement: The perfect Christ Centered response. Fleeing Attacking. Dave’s wife provides wisdom with “It is more important to be righteous than right.” It is important to remember in all situations, we are talking to another human being. 21:18 – Segment 2 We start to talk about debatable matters. In this, we need to be careful not to become too dogmatic. John holds onto debatable doctrine with an open hand. How do we know when it is a secondary matter? Is it worth disagreeing with someone especially on social media? We have a discussion on tongues as an example. 28:38 – Segment 3 Nuts and bolts what are some parameters when we disagree on Facebook? We need to be charitable. If it’s a Christian, we need to have the view that they are speaking out of a desire to glorify God. Ad hominem attacks are unacceptable. What do we do when we see people spouting heresy? We have different levels of responsibility such as church family, friends, and others. We are talking to an image bearer of God. On social media, we have time to respond and we should take that time. We should remember on social media who are audiences are. Our primary audience is the person to whom we are responding, but we have a secondary audience of everyone who can see it. As such, we shouldn’t be so dogmatic in debatable issues. 39:36 – Segment 4 The branches talk about disagreements that are not theological in nature. Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure we’d talk about the 2016 election. Dave wrote an excellent blog on this topic. James gave his personal view on the election. Dave talks about how we conduct ourselves as shown in Ephesians 4. The unity of spirit and bond of peace turned into WWE Smackdown. We turn the discussion to how we should have disagreed. What do we do when we are doing things right, but we are being attacked. We don’t want to be contentious when we are talking to people about being contentious. When things are getting contentious we can diffuse the situation by praying together. We need to be willing to admit we’re wrong especially in secondary matters. In the end, it’s okay to disagree but we need to do it in a God honoring way. Dave Cooke, a Valley business coach and founder of 100Pedals, discusses how 100 days totally changed his life, and ultimately helped his son. “Some people choose to embrace the darkness. I choose to look for the light” Over six years ago, Dave Cooke had hit rock bottom while trying to save his youngest son from addiction, and in doing so, Dave's own life was out of control. Dave thought and prayed, “God just give me a heart attack so I can escape this” Life had become just too much. Dave Cooke found it hard just to get out of bed. One night while sitting on the porch, which he did often, he realized things had to change. Dave also knew nothing would change unless he did something about it, so he challenged himself to ride his bike one hour a day for 100 consecutive days. He wanted to start each day with something positive. His 100-day challenge was not immediate. It took him a couple of days to get started, but finally Dave got his bike out of garage and just rode. One hour and 8 minutes later he finished day one feeling inspired and energized. Dave wrote some notes and waited for the next day. Every day he rode and every day he journaled. Dave Cooke found himself becoming more confident, stronger. The more he pedaled and journaled, the more momentum he had. Dave recalls how his son Brandon's journey to addiction started by smoking pot in 8 th grade. Brandon then began struggling in school, couldn't play soccer any longer because of his grades, chose different friends, and over the years, became a heroin addict. Brandon stole from his family, lived on the streets and was arrested. According to Dave Cooke, more than 23 million people struggle with addiction, and the saying ‘My kid would never do drugs' is just not true. He goes on to say that Brandon knew he was loved by his family, but like other addicts, his addiction was his coping mechanism he chose for his pain. Dave believes it can happen to anyone. Dave felt like a failure. He earned his living as a business coach and yet he couldn't change or coach his own son. It was devastating. He felt broken. He was not himself. He was failing to allow his love to show through. Through the 100 Day Challenge, Dave was able to create healthy boundaries for his relationship with his son. It took him out of ‘rescue mode' and gave him clarity. Dave was able to stop bringing his fears and doubts into his son's situation. His mindset shifted. He became healthier. Dave made his son responsible for his own recovery. Brandon is now 8 months clean and is doing the work to stay sober. When Dave launched his non-profit, 100Pedals, he biked from Santa Monica to Detroit along legendary Route 66. An amazing journey with a mission. This ride allowed Dave to experience life in slow motion. The purpose was to show his healing, and to connect with others. While on his trip, people came up and shared their own stories of addiction. Soon Dave will be doing a second ride from Charleston to New Orleans. Through this, Dave Cooke wants us to remember, “Love trumps everything…love trumps fear”. He reminds us all to surrender to love… allow yourself to love and to be loved. Nothing disrupts or interrupts peace or joy more than adversity. Life would be so much simpler and easier if we just didn’t have to deal with conflict. In the world of a parent of child with substance abuse issues, the disruptions can often become overwhelming.  The other day I was coaching a parent about managing their response to these events.  The discussion centered around learning to emotionally react to the situation vs. intellectually responding to it. The challenge is understanding how to detach from the situation long enough to identify the differences between what you can control and what you have no control over; then, defining how to respond to what you have control over. The likelihood you have positioned yourself to make a better, more intelligent decision increases significantly.  Additionally, you begin to learn how to avoid getting pulled into the chaos of the behaviors, choices, and decisions of others, which are activities you have no control over anyway. This is one of the processes I have used in my 100Pedals journey to help me find peace in the chaos of my son’s addiction. It is a process I have used to manage conflict in every area of my life and it has been a game changer for me. It is my hope you find peace in your chaos as you learn to manage your emotional reactions and replace them with intellectual responses. In the holiday season, the relationship tensions that exist in families are often exacerbated. Even in the best of families, there are often relationship issues present between various family members. A family impacted by addiction are no exception. In fact, these tensions might even be more significant and pronounced, especially during the Holidays.  There are really no easy answers regarding the reality that these tensions might prohibit one loved one from attending a family function because of the potential participation of another. Because every family situation is different and unique, I cannot offer a clear, simple solution.  I can only share how our family is dealing with this very issue and why I am comfortable with our approach. In today’s podcast, I am sharing our family’s approach to the possibility that some members may not be in attendance because of their boundaries or history. I love that my children have defined their boundaries and expectations based on lessons and experience. I have no intention of challenging, changing, or criticizing their boundaries. Defining them and honoring boundaries are critical for one’s emotional, physical, and psychological health and security.  However, relative to the boundaries of others, my own boundaries, rules, and philosophies are to be equally respected and honored, as well. It is in this conflict is where today’s podcast goes.  Hoping this helps you and your family. When it comes to a loved one’s addiction, every member of the family responds to it differently. Moms and dads are no exception. In an earlier podcast, I reflected on why it is critically important for parents to work together and come to agreement on how they are going to respond to this crisis within the families. This week's podcast is a direct invitation to Dads to become and remain more actively involved in this crisis. When I give talks or workshops, the participation of Dads is less than 20%. There are always are a variety of reasons and justifications for this occurrence; however, just like problem solving, education and collaboration requires a team effort. Addiction is a family problem; everyone is involved whether they want to be or not. It is one that requires the active engagement of all to better understand the issue and the appropriate measures for dealing with it while helping our loved ones.  Dads provide a critical leadership component in the family dynamic. Regardless of this situation, it is important they participate in this process, as well. Dads, please accept my heartfelt invitation to join us in the learning process.  We need you.  **** If you are struggling with the addiction of a loved one or child and need someone to talk with, please contact me. One of the greatest conflicts that arise as a result of addiction in the family is the impact this has on the parents’ relationship.  Moms and Dads respond to the situation and look at the issue from two different perspectives. At some point in the process, as the addiction adversity increases, the differences in approaches often lead to conflict, confusion, and resentment.  When parents are divided, the addiction has control over everyone. The family will experience an even greater division at a time when strong agreement and support for each other is at its most critical juncture. Addiction can easily, and often do, ruin marriages. This can be avoided. Nothing is more critically important to an addiction issue than having two parents in agreement, collaborating to find ways to support each other and their child appropriately, while going through the collective thought and education process together.  In today’s podcast, I talk about the keys to parents working together, how they can proactively collaborate despite each other’s different approaches, and tips for coming to agreement.  **** If you are struggling with the addiction of a loved one or child and need someone to talk with, please contact me. The consequences of our choices

100Pedals Talk

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 31, 2016 4:18

Every parent dealing with the choices and behaviors of child with an addiction struggles with developing and honoring boundaries.  In reality, most parents struggle with clearly defined boundaries and consequences, in general.  Teaching our children and ourselves this lesson is a critical life skill that the entire family benefits from.  The process for creating healthy boundaries involves three key steps. First, in a moment of rational thought clearly define your rules and expectations for the acceptable behaviors of others. Second, take time to share these expectations and outcomes with those involved. Finally, make and honor your commitment to follow-through on the consequences you have identified and articulated. Every parent has the authority and the responsibility to teach their children, whether they are using or not, that there are expectations and rules associated with their behaviors and their choices.  Part of teaching these responsibilities requires parents to be willing to assign outcomes for failing to honor these rules and expectations and following through with their declarations.  Otherwise, they become empty threats that effect credibility and respect. In this podcast, I share my personal thoughts and experiences with my responsibilities as a parent to my children in this area.  It begins with rational thought and planning.  And, it manifests itself in the execution of the commitment.  How others choose to respond to our clearly defined expectations is not our responsibility; it is our responsibility to teach our children the concept of and our commitment to our rules, expectations, and our defined consequences for failing to honor them.   **** If you are struggling with the addiction of a loved one or child and need someone to talk with, please contact me. When denial gets in the way of reality

We have all heard the saying “your gut is always right.” Despite our affirmative experiences with this truth, we have all had that defining moment where we wish we trusted our gut instincts. It is hard for parents to believe that one of their children is using, lying, being dishonest, or manipulating them.  Even though our strongest instincts are screaming at us to pay attention to them, many times we allow denial, not instinct to manage our decision-making processes. In this podcast, I share a story about a personal experience with denial and the powerful lesson I learned to trust my instincts from that day forward. From this experience, I have developed the confidence to trust my instincts over everything and it has protected me from disastrous decisions ever since. **** If you are struggling with the addiction of a loved one or child and need someone to talk with, please contact me. The question was asked, "how do you talk to your addicted child without pushing them over the edge?" The answer is easier than you may realize, executing it may take some time and effort. We want so badly to steer them toward recovery, responsibility, change that it is hard to resist the urge to remind them what they need to do to get there.  When in reality, they pretty much know all this already. In this short podcast, I share the approach I have used to have healthy conversations with my addicted son. While it sadly has not changed the choices he is making, it has enabled us to have very productive conversations that allow me to convey my unconditional love, hope and my commitment to him regardless of his mess.  I have learned that these conversations are more impactful to him because he always leaves knowing he is loved and left with something that reminds him there is hope. **** If you are struggling with the addiction of a loved one or child and need someone to talk with, please contact me.  You can reach me with your questions or concerns at: dave@100Pedals.com Dave Cooke travels around the country giving inspirational and educational talks to business organizations, support groups, churches, schools and treatment facilities. We took a unique break from our traditional format. Instead of having a guest on this podcast, we opted to ask our parent listeners to provide issues and struggles for host, Dave Cooke, to reflect on. The response was tremendous. Thank you! From your submissions, we selected five questions that best reflected the general tone of all your questions. Today's podcast focuses on the following topical areas: 1. Dealing with a child who is not ready to embrace recovery; yet is at tremendous risk if they don't. 2. The challenges of finding effective recovery programs for our children. 3. Inspiring a child to get on with their life, post recovery. 4. Responding to societal related issues of family, friends, relatives -judgement, scorn, ignorance - who just don't understand the roller coaster pain of a parent's addiction journey. 5. Handling family divides, especially between siblings, that result from everyone's respective addiction related experiences. Thank you to the parents who submitted questions. We will do this again.  My son has offered to participate in our next Q&A session to bring someone with personal addiction experience and perspective into the conversation. Next week (January 8) we will resume our series of guest interviews.  In the meantime, enjoy and many blessings to you and your families through this holiday season and into 2015!
