As we continue to investgate Liberty of Conscience, we come to a consideration of our liberty in matters indifferent. We search the Scripture to understand a right use and wrong use of things indifferent in our Christian life. Concrete examples regard even our use of alcohol, clothing, and entertainment as we seek to do all things to the glory of God.--In addition, we also see how the categories of indifference cannot be used to invent ceremonies or rites that have religious significance, but instead, worship is strictly regulated by the Regulative Principle of Worship. 1 Corinthians 10-22-33.

In Romans 14, Paul confronts how easily Christians can be divided over matters which are neither commanded nor forbidden by God (aka adiaphora). The adiaphora threatening to divide the Church was how Jewish and Gentile Christians deal with the practices and traditions of the Old Testament in the New Testament Church. Emotions can run deep when it comes to evaluating one's personal practices and insensitivity is common among those who don't seek to understand another's perspective but choose to judge. This is especially true of Christians when it comes to matters to which God's Word is silent. Paul encourages his brothers and sisters in Christ to recognize that our real responsibility is to live not for what is no longer important in the sight of God but for Him who died and rose again for us.

Adiaphora is a theological term that means "indifference." It typically refers to practices that are neither commanded nor forbidden by God in Scripture. The Lutheran churches have historically used adiaphora as a method for explaining and allowing reasonable liturgical and personal piety differences between churches to exist while remaining unified around the core confessions of the church. The fellows discuss why understanding adiaphora is important and how it can benefit the church. Only when the gospel of Jesus Christ becomes our primary identity is both unity and diversity possible. Adiaphora – non-essential matters that are deemed scripturally neutral Romans 14:1-9 1Accept the one whose faith is weak, without quarreling over disputable matters. 2One person's faith allows them to eat anything, but another, whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables. 3The one who eats everything must not treat with contempt the one who does not, and the one who does not eat everything must not judge the one who does, for God has accepted them. 4Who are you to judge someone else's servant? To their own master, servants stand or fall. And they will stand, for the Lord is able to make them stand. 5One person considers one day more sacred than another; another considers every day alike. Each of them should be fully convinced in their own mind. 6Whoever regards one day as special does so to the Lord. Whoever eats meat does so to the Lord, for they give thanks to God; and whoever abstains does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God. 7For none of us lives for ourselves alone, and none of us dies for ourselves alone. 8If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. 9For this very reason, Christ died and returned to life so that he might be the Lord of both the dead and the living. The goal of the church is unity, not uniformity. It is gospel unity that is proof of the deep work of Jesus to change our lives and how we interact with one another. Romans 14:10-15 10You, then, why do you judge your brother or sister? Or why do you treat them with contempt? For we will all stand before God's judgment seat. 11It is written: “ ‘As surely as I live,' says the Lord, ‘every knee will bow before me; every tongue will acknowledge God.' ” 12So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God. 13Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister. 14I am convinced, being fully persuaded in the Lord Jesus, that nothing is unclean in itself. But if anyone regards something as unclean, then for that person it is unclean. 15If your brother or sister is distressed because of what you eat, you are no longer acting in love. Do not by your eating destroy someone for whom Christ died. Romans 14:19-20 19Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification. 20Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. How can we be a radically united church in a radically divided culture? Find our identity in the gospel of Jesus Christ Practice humility and empathy Embrace diversity Actively listen Pursue reconciliation Pray for unity

Today Chris introduces the subject of "Adiaphora"--a term which means "things indifferent". He notes that it is a fine term, so long as you use it correctly. He addresses its use by the Cynics, and then Glenn discusses briefly how it was used by some of the Reformers in a very narrow sense. The trouble with it according to the gang is it has become a catchall for anyone who wants to shut down discussion on the meaning of certain things--reducing them to matters of taste. It is a favorite category for the Utilitarians in the church who wish to dismiss the promotion of Beauty entirely, and even narrow the application of Truth and Goodness to a very small set of concerns. If, as Abraham Kuyper said, ‘There is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is Sovereign over all, does not cry, Mine!’--then how can we say something is indifferent? Everything matters to the Christian because everything belongs to Christ. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/the-theology-pugcast/support

Living In The Vine – Bible Thumping Wingnut Network

Disagreements – Episode #19 In This Episode... We have a special guest today. We welcome the Senior Pastor from our church, Calvary Baptist Church in Riverhead, NY, Dave Cooke. 01:38 – Segment 1 The discussion gets started in that disagreements in and of themselves are not bad. Iron sharpens iron is a well-known Scripture. However, that only happens when there is friction. How do we handle situations in which we have disagreements? The problem of disagreements is made worse and more public by social media. We will be talking about two general types of disagreement. Those that are theologically based and those that are not theologically based. In theological disagreements, we cannot disagree about the essentials. You can find a deeper treatment of the essentials in our previous podcast on Theology. Everything we do is in love. In everything, we need to be representing Christ and the Gospel. We discuss disagreements of doctrine that lies outside orthodoxy. There is a brief discussion on the Middle Ages and how they viewed orthodoxy. Are disagreements different with Christians and non-Christians? Both cases, we must represent the Gospel. There are three levels on disagreement in doctrinal matters: Essentials Non-Essentials that are discussed in Scripture but are unclear. Adiaphora that are not discussed in Scripture. ”The Peacemaker” by Ken Sande lays out a view of three options during a disagreement: The perfect Christ Centered response. Fleeing Attacking. Dave’s wife provides wisdom with “It is more important to be righteous than right.” It is important to remember in all situations, we are talking to another human being. 21:18 – Segment 2 We start to talk about debatable matters. In this, we need to be careful not to become too dogmatic. John holds onto debatable doctrine with an open hand. How do we know when it is a secondary matter? Is it worth disagreeing with someone especially on social media? We have a discussion on tongues as an example. 28:38 – Segment 3 Nuts and bolts what are some parameters when we disagree on Facebook? We need to be charitable. If it’s a Christian, we need to have the view that they are speaking out of a desire to glorify God. Ad hominem attacks are unacceptable. What do we do when we see people spouting heresy? We have different levels of responsibility such as church family, friends, and others. We are talking to an image bearer of God. On social media, we have time to respond and we should take that time. We should remember on social media who are audiences are. Our primary audience is the person to whom we are responding, but we have a secondary audience of everyone who can see it. As such, we shouldn’t be so dogmatic in debatable issues. 39:36 – Segment 4 The branches talk about disagreements that are not theological in nature. Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure we’d talk about the 2016 election. Dave wrote an excellent blog on this topic. James gave his personal view on the election. Dave talks about how we conduct ourselves as shown in Ephesians 4. The unity of spirit and bond of peace turned into WWE Smackdown. We turn the discussion to how we should have disagreed. What do we do when we are doing things right, but we are being attacked. We don’t want to be contentious when we are talking to people about being contentious. When things are getting contentious we can diffuse the situation by praying together. We need to be willing to admit we’re wrong especially in secondary matters. In the end, it’s okay to disagree but we need to do it in a God honoring way. Explore what R. J. Gore has to say in his section on “Adiaphora and the Reformed Confessions” in his work, “Covenantal Worship: Reconsidering the Puritan Regulative Principle”. Consider that we need to receive tradition, contextualize it but winsomely and wisely, thoughtfully and ever aware of what is adiaphora and what is not. Consider that the unity of the Church catholic does not hinge on whether our worship is identical. Gore states, “. . . there is a consensus among these major Reformation confessions that there are matters neither commanded nor forbidden that may be used, established, changed, or removed by the church, depending upon the exact situation the church faces. This is consonant with the teachings of the New Testament on the nature of worship and the concept of adiaphora. Further, we may well conclude that much of the turmoil in the Anglican-Puritan controversy, as well as much of the confusion in the history of Presbyterian worship, could have been avoided by incorporating these two things: (1) a recognition that all of life is worship and is regulated along the lines of covenantal faithfulness, and (2) a healthy respect for and sober use of the concept of adiaphora as applied to the question of circumstances."

Have you ever been judged? Have you ever judged someone else? If so, check out this sermon from Pastor Jedidiah Maschke on Romans 14:1-12.

Creekside Bible Church

It seems, in our current culture, one of the worst things someone can be called is “judgmental.” Sadly, this label often given to anyone who declares a belief in a moral standard; Christians are constantly called judgmental. People are reacting to this in one of two ways: They get louder and angrier – seemingly more judgmental – or they stop talking about right and wrong altogether. The average person intuitively understands that these common, yet extreme approaches are both flawed. People shouldn’t yell at everyone who does something they don’t like; people shouldn’t accept everything that everyone does as good. The Bible offers a complex solution to this tension. This series of sermons aims to teach what the Bible says about judging others.
