Two sisters rewatch and discuss the movies of their childhood to see if they still hold up or are they just nostalgic? Hosted by Britney Young (from Netflix's GLOW) & Nicole Young
Britney and Nicole are back with another set of quick questions for this week's movie, "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom." They quickly find out that Britney is a history buff while Nicole is just along for the adventure. Oh and Britney really needs to get some air conditioning in her apartment!
This week Britney and Nicole discuss one of their favorite movies, "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom." Even though they enjoy the movie, they both realize there is a lot of cultural insensitivity and racism throughout, and oh yeah, it doesn't really even have a plot! There are so many actions scenes throughout this movie that have no plausibility and make no sense. No wonder Mythbusters tried so many myths from the franchise. The sisters discuss yet again another failed female character in Kate Capshaw's Willie Shaw, but gush about Ke Huy Quan's Shortround.
Britney and Nicole find out that dreams are a funny thing on this week's lighting round, where they discuss "Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland." Things get heated when Britney tries to convince Nicole that yes, you can fall in a dream and not wake up. They discuss what their nightmares look like, they seem to be filled with lots of birds. And talk about vivid dreams that they still remember to this day.
Britney and Nicole find out the hard way that recording an episode during a huge storm, is going to give them a few technical problems. But never fear, the sisters get through their discussion of this week's movie "Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland" pretty much unscathed...well, they do get into an epic disagreement about the words to King Morpheus's scepter incantation, so maybe not. They also discuss how the films plot mimics dreams and nightmares because it's all over the place and doesn't make much sense. The sisters also lament on another undeveloped female character, and try to figure out where Little Nemo get's the audacity to accept the role of Slumberland heir, when there is already a Princess in waiting.
Britney and Nicole are starting to find that thinking of questions for odd movies like, "The Last Unicorn", is difficult. But never fear, they got it and end up having an interesting conversation. They discuss mistakes from their past that have made them think: "yup, that was a choice!" The sisters agree on what band or musician would create the soundtrack to their life. And on a very funny tangent, they highly recommend not sneezing with your eyes open!
Britney and Nicole conclude that this week's movie, "The Last Unicorn" is not made for children! It's extremely creepy and weird, and had both of them scratching their head during several key moments. The sister's agree this unfortunately is another movie with a extremely stereotypical female lead character who can't save herself and wants to change herself for the love of a man. The movie deals with a lot of deaths and violence and...sexualized animal and plant characters?!? Yep, that was a choice the filmmakers made apparently! Britney and Nicole agree this movie is creepy, and wonder what exactly made them watch it so much as children?
Another Lightning Round goes off the rails and is full of non stop giggles as Britney and Nicole discuss this weeks' movie, "The NeverEnding Story." The sisters try to determine if they would be able to pass through the oracles gates for being pure of heart, if they would be able to save the world on an epic quest, discuss their dream fantasy worlds and give each other their very own "Moon Child" name.
Britney and Nicole continue their "movies that scared us that shouldn't have" month with the 1980s classic: "The NeverEnding Story." It's very clear from the beginning that Britney has several issues with this movie, and the sisters admit that they honestly couldn't catch the names of a majority of the characters. They grimace about how this is another movie that sends a young child to save a world with absolutely no instructions. But they are pleasantly surprised that this movie didn't escape the classic overdramatic and out of place 80s synth soundtrack.
We have quite a funny lightning round for this week's movie, "The Labyrinth." Britney and Nicole discuss their favorite characters (and make it very clear which character they don't like!), their conversation about what the smell of their personal "Bog of External Stench" goes into creepy territory really fast, and they decide would they go into the Labyrinth to save each other or their brother?
Britney and Nicole disagree on whether this week's movie, "The Labyrinth" belongs in this months category of "movies that scared us, that shouldn't have". Nicole admits to finding the movie boring and fast forwarding several sections, while Britney feels the movie wasn't as scary as she thought it was as a kid. One thing they agree on is that the main character is overdramatic and annoying, and David Bowie's pants are way too tight!
Some movies are great lightning round fodder, and then some movies are "The Dark Crystal." Britney and Nicole discuss their scariest scene, which character they are most like, and air their feelings about Hollywood's obsession with reboots.
This week's movie "The Dark Crystal" will go down in Movie Night with the Youngs as the fastest: "is it nostalgia or does it hold up" conclusion EVER! Britney and Nicole talk about how confusing they found this movie. What exactly is the plot, and why is every creature in this movie moving so slow? Like glacially slow! The sisters compliment the production design and the puppets, and Britney comes to realize one character she was scared of as a child, may be the most relatable character in the entire movie! Oh, and real life sneaks in again as the sister's get interrupted by a visitor and a group text from their mom!
Britney and Nicole are ready to leave "Return to Oz" behind. But before they can, the sisters discuss what fictional land they would like to visit, talk a lot about dreams and who would be a part of their Emerald City crew.
New month, means new theme: Movies that Scared Us, That Shouldn't Have. And boy do we have a dozie this week! Britney and Nicole watch the 1985 movie "Return to Oz" and yikes, is this movie creepy! The sisters discuss how the movie's music score and production design sounds and looks more like District 12 from "Hunger Games" than the whimsy of Oz. They talk about how the headless Princess Mombi scared them just as much as adults as she did when they were kids. And they question how this movie was ever marketed to children when it's absolutely nightmare inducing! It's horrifically obvious Dorothy is no longer in Kansas!
This week's movie "The Little Mermaid" have Britney and Nicole discussing love at first site, and if they have ever changed themselves to win over a crush. They also discuss the time their dad threw all their classic Disney VHS tapes away at the dump, making their mom cry.
Britney and Nicole are usually pretty good at retaining what they saw in each week's movie, but for some reason with "The Little Mermaid" a lot didn't stick. However, the sisters did pick up on the classic Disney tropes of characters only having one parent or none at all, and Disney princesses who are desperately wanting to find adventure elsewhere but instead end up settling for falling in love and marrying some man. Ariel might be the worst offender yet! Britney and Nicole also discuss Sebastian's many job titles, Mermaid contract legality and wonder if King Triton is also a sea witch because of his magical powers.
This week's lightning round for "Aladdin" is filled with lots of laughs and Britney and Nicole learn a few new things. They solve the question from this week's earlier episode of what exactly the Cave of Wonders told Aladdin he couldn't touch. They tell each other what they would wish for if they had a magic genie. And wonder if there is a weight limit on the magic carpet? Britney also teaches Nicole about the Mandela Effect. Don't say our podcast isn't educational!
We are starting to see a disturbing pattern with these Disney classic movies: lots of violence! This week's movie "Aladdin" fits the bill, so much so that Disney+ even begins the movie with a content warning. Often times Britney and Nicole seem to have similar thoughts about each week's movie, but this week it's almost like they are sharing one brain. They discuss their thoughts on why Jasmine has to get married, why another Disney movie has characters without parents and get into a heated discussion on whether or not the Cave of Wonders said "touch nothing" or "touch nothing, but the lamp!"
This Lightning Round is full of Hakuna Matata! Britney and Nicole ask each other random questions about this week's movie "The Lion King." They assign each member of their family an animal counterpart, discuss why Elton John was a perfect choice to create the music for the film and reveal what strange food items they've eaten!
It wouldn't be a Disney classic if someone didn't die, huh? Britney and Nicole really see how committed Disney is to that plot device in this week's movie "The Lion King." The sisters talk about how emotional this movie made them, and how for the first time they picked up on all the inspirational and prophetic life lessons Mufasa instilled in Simba. The sisters clearly missed those as kids, but this time around as adults they caught on. They also caught on to just how many murder plots are planned throughout the film. Isn't this supposed to be about a loving family of lions? Why so much death Disney?!?! No notes about the amazing soundtrack though!
Britney and Nicole answer some interesting questions about this week's movie "Beauty and the Beast." Like what household item would you be from your own house if the enchantress put it under a spell? Britney's answered seem to make sense but Nicole's...well, she's just thinking on the fly. The sisters also discuss what personality the trait of their own the enchantress can punish them with and what would be a suitable punishment for them. How would one get out of a "Groundhog Day" situation?
Oh boy! We know this podcast is about us rewatching and discussing movies, but oh boy, do we get an insight into life with Nicole on this episode! Her loving dogs Night and Moon make some loud appearances because Grandma couldn't babysit, and her boyfriend thought it would be a good idea to make some tacos in the microwave and wash the dishes. Oh yeah, we do discuss this week's movie "Beauty and the Beast", aka "Britney's favorite Disney movie." We question if any girl could've broken the spell or did she have to be pretty? We discuss how Disney movies made it seem like you could fall in love in a day, and how Gaston straight up seemed like he hates women and might actually be a small time criminal.
We doth protest too much, wethinks! We probably should've held back, but personal stories galore are revealed in this week's lightning round! Britney and Nicole answer random questions about this week's movie, "A Goofy Movie." They talk about the times where their parents embarrassed them and decide what other Disney movie Tevin Campbell would've done well in. Nicole reminisces about when their Dad used to relax her hair with products that made her scalp burn (we hope Just for Me Kids has changed their formula by now!) and Britney reveals the one lie she told that spawned some criminal activity on her part.
"A Goofy Movie", lives up to the theme of our podcast: seeing how movies from our childhood effect us differently now as adults. Because we saw this movie in an entirely new light! Britney and Nicole can't believe the way Max treats his dad Goofy, and both agree they'd never talk to their parents that way. The sisters discuss the movie's similarities to teen classics "Sixteen Candles" and "Grease" and the wonderful casting of Tevin Campbell as Powerline. Oh and our apologies for our terrible singing.
Really isn't any other way to start of a Lightning Round episode than Nicole unable to contain her laughter from a story she told five minutes before taping. Britney and Nicole are back with the first Lighting Round episode after hiatus, and this week's movie is "Super Mario Bros." The sisters share which video game they'd like to see turned into a live action movie, talk about which Super Mario Kart character they always chose, and in true the spirit of true sisterhood: Britney corrects Nicole's grammar. There is no x in the word escaping!
WE ARE BACK...and our first movie is confusing! Too many characters, too much action, we can't keep it all straight. First movie back from hiatus and Britney and Nicole have picked: "Super Mario Bros". No, not that one with Christ Pratt but the live action classic with Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo, which both Britney and Nicole can both proudly say they own on DVD since this movie wasn't available anywhere to stream. The sisters discuss the differences between the old school video game and this live action version. Whether or not they had any issue with Bob Hoskins not doing the Mario accent. And why does this world of Super Mario Bros actually look like the set from "Total Recall?"
In an interesting twist, this week's Lightning Round gets a bit deep. Britney and Nicole give a glimpse into their states of mind when they answer questions about what quality they would ask The Wiz for. Their answers have a very 2023 New Years resolution vibe. The sister's also talk about their favorite songs, favorite parts of Oz and which character would they play. Even discussing their mother's connection to "The Wizard of Oz" when she played the Cowardly Lion in her high school musical. And if you listened to this week's episode you know Britney had some headphone technical issues, they continue and cause her to miss a very vulnerable answer from Nicole. Whoopsie!
This is one of the our favorite movies of all time! We watched this nonstop growing up, so much so that we practically memorize it. After watching it so many times though, Nicole confesses to fast forwarding through spots she doesn't really like, making Britney realize that when she watched on her own she saw parts of this movie she hasn't seen in over 20 years! The sisters discuss their favorite songs, comparisons to "The Wizard of Oz" starring Judy Garland, and how watching a movie with an all black cast has affected them now as adults versus when they were little kids. Plus, they realize, this movie is WAY more sensual than they remember it being!
Britney and Nicole agree that although the vibe of this week's episode on "Space Jam" was different than past episodes, it's a prime example of what the "Movie Nights with the Youngs" podcast is all about: discussing how movies from childhood effect us as adults. Some leave a significant impact, and others just fall flat and it shows. But what doesn't fall flat is this week's accompanying Lightning Round! The sisters discuss their favorite songs from the film and get lost on a tangent on CDs and the repetitiveness of techno songs from the 90s. We also find out which NBA star's talent they would steal if they needed to, and they wonder who comes to mind when someone says "MJ"? Michael Jordan? Or Michael Jackson?
This week provides another "Movie Night with the Youngs" first! We won't ruin the surprise, you'll have to tune in to find out as Britney and Nicole rewatch and discuss the Lonney Tunes basketball classic, "Space Jam." Keeping with this month's theme of "movies with good soundtracks" the sisters agree that the songs that accompanied the film are fantastic, but Britney wonders if they really matched the tone of the film? The sisters admit they weren't big Looney Tunes fans growing up, but that they enjoyed this animation and live action hybrid. Especially those little aliens from Moron Mountain, and were impressed with the voice acting talents of Danny Devito. But they both are taken by surprise when they realize Bill Murray was in this movie...huh? We will be honest, there is a different vibe to this week's episode and we are curious for those of you who have watched the movie, do you feel the same way as we do?
First Lightning Round of 2023! This week Nicole and Britney rewatched and discussed "Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit". As always, this lightning round has both of the sisters super hyper! Britney admits to pirating songs when she was younger, and Nicole goes into detail about how she still owns CDs and that her car has a six changer CD player. Do they even make CD players anymore? Nicole keeps making fun of Britney for not using her indoor voice. And the sisters aren't quite sure which character they feel matches their personality but they agree that as sisters their personalities are quite different from each other.
Brand new year, brand new month! This month on "Movie Night with the Youngs", Nicole and Britney are rewatching and discussing, movies with great soundtracks! First up, "Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit." Sorry, but the sisters are skipping the first movie and going straight to the sequel. They discuss how the power of music transcends language barriers and religious views. Britney and Nicole wonder if these kids ever attended any other subject besides music? Once again Nicole and Britney can't remember character names, and embarrassingly, Nicole leaves her phone on and their mom calls her several times during recording. Oh boy, 2023 getting off to an interesting start!
Here we are, the last Lightning Round for 2022! Coming off of a heated (well, from Britney's end) discussion about this week's movie "Gremlins", Nicole and Britney lighten it up with some laughter and...well, we shall call it, confusion. Nicole brings up a sledding memory from their childhood that Britney says is the funniest moment of her life. And they both pick which Gremlin they most related to. Thanks for an amazing 2022, we shall see you in 2023!
For the final episode of 2022, Nicole and Britney rewatch and discuss, "Gremlins." Ringing out the year in style, we have a "Movie Night with the Youngs" first ! What could it be? Tune in to find out! The episode also gets interrupted by an earthquake. Don't worry, nobody was hurt, and the sisters just keep rolling! Get ready to see Britney more heated than we've ever seen her! While Nicole reveals that her love of horror movies made the violence in this movie seem quite tame. The sisters discuss the movies all over place tone, and make a few mistakes along the way. But hey, getting things right that's what 2023 is for! Happy New Year!
Dominic joins Britney and Nicole for this week's lightning round. The siblings discuss their favorite Christmas songs and the best Christmas gifts they've ever gotten. They realize many of their Young Family Christmas traditions go against the Christmas norm. Like, did your family leave cookies out for Santa? And are your gifts from Santa wrapped or unwrapped on Christmas morning?
Britney and Nicole welcome a very special guest to this week's episode to discuss "Elf." Well, they think he is special, he is their little brother after all! The siblings quickly find out that Dominic is the questions guy; bringing up thoughtful questions like: how does one travel from the North Pole to New York on a piece of floating ice? And why didn't Santa just raise Buddy himself, since he is also human? The Young sibling dynamic is on full display, as the trio reminisce about Christmas past, Dom's weird obsession with snow globes, and they figure out they actually don't know the words to a lot of Christmas songs. Oh and they try get something called "The Elf Challenge" started. Tune in to find out what that is!
Another Lightning Round gets a bit testy! Nicole and Britney argue which is better: Halloween or Christmas? They wonder what exactly would be behind the St. Patrick's day door, Ireland or just beer? And the sisters go down memory lane and discuss Christmas presents from Christmas days past, and were there any presents that they just didn't like ?
This week's episode is the Tim Burton classic, "The Nightmare Before Christmas." This week the accusations fly! Nicole accuses Britney of not having an imagination because she questions the logistics of Christmastown too much. Britney accuses Nicole of having a dark Halloween heart. And they both accuse Jack Skellington of "Holiday Appropriation" as he steals Christmas without honoring it's history or it's customs. All accusations are made out of love, of course...well, not the one about Jack! Plus, the sisters get stumped on trying to figure out if there are penguins in the North Pole.
Hurray for our first Holiday movie Lighting Round! Britney and Nicole ask each other questions about this week's episode, "Home Alone." Their questions bring up memories of their dad's movie collection and hoarding Betty Crocker frosting as kids. And they wonder, would the be able to do all the things that Kevin did if they were home alone?
Happy Holidays! A new month has begun, which means a new theme: Holiday Movies! We start with a bang with this week's film: "Home Alone". Britney and Nicole discuss the childlike innocence of the holidays, wonder how they would protect their home from thieves and agree that as kids they were rooting for Kevin, but as a adults they realize, he may be the criminal!
Britney and Nicole ask each other questions about this week's movie, "Teen Wolf" Like: "what mythical creature would you want to be?" The sisters wrack their brains and get lost in a tangent about cartoon characters; which they decide are not, mythical creatures. Nicole tells a few stories about her Fast & Furious stunt driving in the family's old Windstar Minivan and Britney can't stop singing! Needless to say, this is another off the rails Lightning Round!
Still together, and snug in the warmth of inside heating, Britney and Nicole rewatch and discuss this week's movie, "Teen Wolf." They wonder: with a werewolf as it's lead character, can this really be considered a sports movie, or is it just a giant metaphor for puberty? Britney and Nicole question if all high school house parties are really that wild, what gives Michael J. Fox's mane such volume, and geez louise why were these basketball players so sweaty?
The 35 degree Alaskan temperature has clearly gotten to Britney and Nicole as hints of their own sibling rivalry rears it's head while they ask each other questions about this week's movie, "The Little Giants." They discuss their Christmas tradition of playing Monopoly, reminisce about learning to ride bikes through a Japanese cemetery and make a plea to several athletes to make a guest appearance on an episode of "Movie Night with the Youngs."
Britney and Nicole are finally together in the same place and think: wouldn't it be a fun idea to record this episode outside in the 35 degree Alaskan weather? They quickly find out, it wasn't a good idea. They froze their butts off. But it did lead to a lot of laughs and a great discussion about this week's movie, "The Little Giants." Britney and Nicole once again discuss how female characters are treated in sports movies, talk about everyone's 90s crush Devon Sawa and try to figure out what exactly is the "Annexation of Puerto Rico."
Once again, Britney and Nicole's knowledge of this week's sport is minimal, but it leads to great laughs and some heated debates. Could driving a bobsled feel as simple as riding a roller coaster? And the girls go on the ultimate food tangent. All we can say is: McDonald's do better.
This week's movie hits Britney and Nicole in a way they haven't experienced yet on Movie Night with the Youngs. They both agree as children they were drawn to the comedy, great training montages and feel good vibes of "Cool Runnings" (1993). But now as adults, the message of not letting anyone tell you your worth and that it's okay to be different, just be yourself; hit Britney and Nicole right in the feels.
Britney and Nicole's hockey knowledge really gets put to the test as the Lightning Round gets a bit heated! "The Mighty Ducks" questions Britney and Nicole ask each other bring up a lot of childhood memories, both good and bad! Nicole reveals you should never play movie board games with Britney, and they both realize they never watched the entire back half of the "Sound of Music" growing up!
Nicole and Britney realize they know absolutely nothing about how the game of hockey is truly played, as they rewatch and discuss "The Mighty Ducks" (1992). They recognize that this movie is a lot darker than they remember it as kids. And wonder: did anyone really ask for the romance between Coach Bombay and Charlie's mom? And what the heck actually happens in detention?
After rewatching and discussing "The Sandlot" for this week's episode, Nicole and Britney ask each other a series of questions about the movie, like: "how do you make the perfect smore?" and "who is your favorite Sandlot character?" Listen in as we reminisce about embarrassing family stories and share plenty of laughs.
The premiere episode of MOVIE NIGHT WITH THE YOUNGS! Nicole and Britney rewatch the movie "The Sandlot" (1993) and discuss how different aspects of the movie affect them differently now as adults versus when they were kids. They question: "why didn't they just ask for their ball back?", "who's treehouse is it? ", and "why aren't there more female characters? " among other things.
