Filmmaker Dave Markey discusses his documentary "The Secret Lives of Bill Bartell", the punk scene's most fascinating, mysterious, and surprisingly influential behind-the-scenes figure. Stream it now | Order the Blu-Ray Topics Include: Dave Markey has a large record collection but stopped buying recently. Vinyl prices have skyrocketed — once cheap records now cost thousands. Dave bought records directly from band members at punk shows. Ian MacKaye sold Dave a first press Minor Threat 7". Dave bought Minutemen and Descendents EPs from D-Boon for a dollar. Dave made the Bill Bartell documentary for people who don't know him. Bill Bartell was unknowable — different things to different people. Dave tried making this film in the 90s; Bill refused to cooperate. The film was made ten years after Bill passed away. Bill Bartell faked backstage passes to get into arena rock shows. Bill named the Iron Maiden live EP Maiden Japan. Bill gave Steve Harris his outfit, worn in the "Run to the Hills" video. Bill saw no distinction between the Scorpions, the Germs, and the Beatles. Bill would tell artists exactly what he thought — no filter whatsoever. Bill told Steve Perry he was responsible for the worst night of his life. Bill told Beck "I don't like you" upon their very first meeting. Bill tried out as guitarist for Public Image Ltd in 1981. Kiss circulated photos of Bill to security: do not let him in. Bill befriended Sean Lennon, which led to a friendship with Yoko Ono. Bill's 1988 Beatlefest noise performance nearly caused a riot. Bill talked Kiss manager Bill Aucoin into discovering Generation X. That connection indirectly launched Billy Idol's massive solo career. Billy Idol himself didn't know Bill Bartell's role until recently. Bill gave Kurt Cobain Os Mutantes tapes, reviving the band's career. Pat Smear and Drew Barrymore were sought for the film but unavailable. Dave's band Painted Willie did Black Flag's final tour in 1986. Dave preferred Painted Willie's early Spinhead Records releases over SST output. The Bill Bartell documentary and Love Dolls films are now on Criterion Channel. Bill Bartell's Flying V guitar now hangs in the Punk Rock Museum, Las Vegas. Bill's money, connections, and secrets largely died with him — still a mystery. When Patrick Cross bought a Flying V guitar that survived a fatal bar fire in Michigan, he had no idea the instrument harbored an evil entity that would cost him his job, his health, and nearly his sanity.IN THIS EPISODE: Just because a guitar is the only thing to survive a building fire doesn't mean that guitar is lucky. In fact, it might be the exact opposite, as Patrick Cross found out when he bought the guitar in 1995. The movie kicks off, once again way harder than it needs to. Bombay is out there crushing it in the minors. His future is bright. But he's hit hard and goes down with a knee injury. He goes back home and is picked up by Hans's brother, Yan. They talk about what's next for his life. He doesn't want to go back to Ducksworth. He doesn't think he can make money with pee wee. For now, he's just going to help out in the shop. One day, he has a visitor. It's Don Tibbles and he wants Bombay to coach a team representing the United States in the Junior Goodwill Games in Los Angeles. You'd think maybe there'd be an open try out. There's not. He just gets the Ducks back together thanks to Charlie.Team USA is going to consists of the Ducks and 5 new players: Luis Mendoza, a fast skater who can't stop, Dwayne Robertson, a cowboy who is good with the puck, Julie "The Cat" Gaffney, a goalie that will give Goldberg a run for his money, Ken Wu, a junior Olympic figure skater, and Dean Portman, who is a new enforcer.During the first practice, the teams tutor comes in. Michelle McCay. Bombay immediately puts on the moves. The first practice is rocky, but that's nothing some line dancing and country music can't solve. They have 1 school lesson and they're off to Los Angeles to get started! Up first, Trinidad & Tobago. Tough that USA has to play 2 teams at once but what can ya do. They dominate. The next day, at a press conference, Team Iceland shows up and the coach says TEAM USA IS GOING DOWN, THAT'S WHERE THEY'RE GOING! That's coach and ex-NHL player Wolf "The Dentist" Stansson. More on him later. Bombay begins to enjoy the fancy things that Dom Tibbles is giving him and begins to leave the team by themselves more which causes some issues. One night, Fulton & Portman are out past curfew and they see Bombay out on a date with one of the assistant coaches from Iceland.Bombay walks into the locker room the next day in a fancy suite and his slick back hair. The vibes are off. It's time to play Iceland for the first time. It does not go well. They get blown out 12-1 and Tibbles threatens to fire him if he doesn't get this figured out. He yells at the team and they get real mad. On a mandatory off day given by Michelle, the players go play some street hockey, against a team led by a kid who has been trash talking them at all the games. His name is Russ and he blows their minds with his knuckle-puck.After a kick in the pants by Yan, Bombay goes to skate to clear his mind.In their match against Germany, Bombay fails to arrive on time cuz I guess he lost track of time while skating? I dunno man. Charlie asks Michelle to coach and she does her best but the team is struggling. Bombay finally arrives with his duck call which we all know is duck for "I'm sorry" and the team gets straight to business with the Flying V and win the game. Bombay and Yan go full Mr Miagi and teach all the kids how to use their special skills. Bombay finds out that Banks has a hurt wrist and tells him he has to bench him. But Charlie has found his replacement - Russ and his knuckle-puck. At the last team practice, Bombay wants to have some fun with a beach ball. The Dentist shows up, squashes their ball, and challenges Bombay to a 1 on 1 game. Bombay is killing him when The Dentists nails his knee with his stick intentionally. It's time for the championship and Banks walks in to show that he's been healed. Only problem is his roster spot has been filled. So Charlie offers to give up his spot and become a coach. Bombay does not try to talk him out of it because Charlie sucks at hockey. The game is off to a real rocky start and they go into intermission down 4-1. So they head into the locker room and Bombay gives the classic "ducky fly together" speech and Yan surprises everyone with Ducks uniforms because there's no rule in the play book against changing jerseys during the game. And it works! Thanks to some clever play, the Ducks tie it up. The championship comes down to a shootout. It's 4-3. Iceland has one more shot to tie it up. Naturally, Bombay puts in Julie the cat as goalie. She stops it and the Ducks, I mean Team USA, wins!!!The team heads home and spends some time around the fire as they sing we are the champions together.
I remember seeing the Edge and James Hetfield with an Explorer. Billy Gibbons and Jimi Hendrix with a Flying V. Johnny Winter and Allen Collins with a Firebird… Such fascinating tones from such fascinating players. Of course I wouldn't call these guitars traditional by any stretch of the imagination. Simply put… they look awkward, clunky, and like something out of a sci-fi movie. That said… I currently own the Gibson versions of an Explorer… Flying V… and Firebird… and they are probably some of the best sounding guitars I own. But… Why did these guitars fail early in production? Were they before their time? What keeps them from being popular now? Are they built any different than a Les Paul? Do they have a unique sound? What artists are using them? Are they worth having in a guitar collection? Can they be a guitar players #1? And size… Do they fit in the trunk of my car?Well we will discuss this, and more on this group therapy session with Barber, on the Tweed Couch.
Matt hones his amicable disagreement skills and finds some common ground with Brady Davis and Matt McCormick of Flying V, a ranch management and ducking hunting media company.

If you don't know John McDermott, he's been the guardian of Jimi Hendrix's musical legacy for nearly 30 years. He's the kind of guy with stories you can't Google, insights you can't fake, and a lot of passion for preserving one of rock's greatest icons. We talked about everything from Hendrix's unreleased gems to their upcoming Experience Hendrix tour coming to the Fox Theatre on March 22nd. The Magic of the Fox Theatre First, McDermott talked about his upcoming concert at the Fox Theatre. John said it's one of the best places to perform. "We've played the Fox five times, and the crowd's energy is just incredible, it's not like playing a generic performing arts center where it's just another stop on a subscription series. These fans are passionate. They show up because they love the music." A Lifelong Journey with Jimi Now, how exactly does one become the catalog director for Jimi Hendrix? I asked John, and he dove right in. It started in 1992 when he co-wrote a book called Hendrix: Setting the Record Straight with Eddie Kramer. A year later, John helped produce a tribute album, Stone Free, which raised scholarship funds in Jimi's name through the United Negro College Fund. In the mid-1990s, John helped the Hendrix family win a long legal battle to regain control of Jimi's music. "When they finally won the rights, they asked me to manage the catalog," he explained. "Our first release was in 1997, and I've been doing it ever since." From curating historic releases to creating documentaries, John's helped make sure Hendrix's music remains timeless. How Many Hendrix Songs Are Still Unreleased? Every Hendrix fan has wondered: Is there anything left in the archives? According to John, the answer is, "Yes, but not as much." Over the years, his team has dug deep to release unreleased tracks, documentaries, and live sessions. "We're definitely closer to the end of the archive than we were 20 or 25 years ago," he admitted, "but every now and then, something new surprises us." Case in point? A few years ago, they uncovered a never-before-heard 1967 recording of Hendrix at the Hollywood Bowl. Want to know how early this was? It happened before Are You Experienced? It even dropped in the U.S. That's serious history right there. Why Hendrix Still Resonates When I asked about Hendrix's lasting legacy, John said, "Every generation rediscovers him." From Prince to Stevie Ray Vaughan to John Mayer, Hendrix's influence is woven into the DNA of music. "Jimi's music is timeless," John said. People hear it in movies, commercials, or even on the radio and are driven to find out more. His music speaks for itself—you don't have to hard-sell it." Even in pop culture, Hendrix's impact is everywhere. Quick example? Hulk Hogan famously strutted into the ring to "Voodoo Child." And John lit up when I threw that out there. "Yeah, that's a great example! And people like Paul McCartney still tell stories about their friendship with Jimi on stage. It's amazing how his influence just keeps going." The Experience Hendrix Tour Here's the part you need to know about—the Experience Hendrix tour. If you're even remotely into guitar legends, this is the show for you. John explained why it's such a hit. "It's not just a loose jam session," he said. "It's collaborative. You'll hear the Hendrix songs you know and love, but you'll also discover new artists who bring their own energy to the legacy." The lineup is stacked—think Zakk Wylde, Eric Johnson, and Marcus King, just to name a few. "These artists come because Jimi inspired them in different ways," John added. "It's a common denominator for audiences. People might come in because they're fans of one artist, but by the end of the night, they leave blown away by others." Oh, and if you happen to be at the Fox Theatre on March 22nd? Keep an eye out for surprise appearances. John flat-out said they love throwing unexpected guests into the mix. Hendrix Memorabilia: What's Left? John said Jimi was more of an "off-the-rack" kind of guy when it came to guitars. "He usually had a black Strat, a white Strat, and a Flying V," he shared. "Sometimes a Gibson Les Paul Jr. for blues numbers." Many of Jimi's personal items and stage gear now reside in museums, including the Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP) in Seattle and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Seeing them up close makes Hendrix feel real. "His dad, Al Hendrix, wanted these items shared with fans," John said. "It's incredible to see someone connect with a piece of Jimi's history in person." What's Next For The Hendrix Estate? John said the Electric Lady Studios project has been a big focus, "If we find more material that deepens fans' appreciation of Jimi, we'll explore ways to share it." If you're in Detroit on March 22nd, do yourself a favor and Experience Hendrix (literally) at the Fox Theatre. Trust me, this tour isn't just a concert—it's a celebration of a legend. See you there!
This episode has three main ingredients: Shifty, Schenker, and shredding. What more do you need? Schenker was just 11 when he played his first gig with The Scorpions, and recorded on their debut LP, Lonesome Crow, when he was 16. He's been playing a Gibson Flying V since those early days, so it's only natural that both he and Shifty bust out the Vs for this occasion. While gigging with Scorpions in Germany, Schenker met and was poached by British rockers UFO, with whom he recorded five studio records and one live release. (Schenker's new record, released on September 20, celebrates this pivotal era with reworkings of the material from these albums with a cavalcade of high-profile guests like Axl Rose, Slash, Dee Snider, Adrian Vandenberg, and more.) On 1978's Obsession, his last studio full-length with the band, Schenker cut the solo on “Only You Can Rock Me,” which Shifty thinks carries some of the greatest rock guitar tone of all time. Schenker details his approach to his other solos, but note-for-note recall isn't always in the cards—he plays from a place of deep expression, which he says makes it difficult to replicate his leads. Tune in to learn how the Flying V impacted Schenker's vibrato, the German parallel to Page, Beck, and Clapton, and the twists and turns of his career from Scorpions, UFO, and MSG to brushes with the Rolling Stones.
