This week, lil onions, we're kicking off extended mainfeed coverage of Disney films from childhood, or what is more specifically known as the Disney Renaissance. The best place to start is at the beginning with 1989's The Little Mermaid! Carie manages to keep the big baby tears back as they unravel the story of Princess Ariel of Atlantic, a mermaid who wants to be part of the human world. After trading her voice to a sea witch to get the guy, she'll have to work fast to ensure she's not reduced to haunted seaweed as a pawn in some beef between her father and auntie. Carie describes an actual physiological relationship with the music and lyrics of Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, and Ross recalls a very specific affinity for a King Triton figurine.  SUPPORT US ON PATREON!

They also touch on the generational shift in attitudes towards disabilities and the impact of societal norms on children's perceptions. In this conversation, Amanda Owen discusses how to address children's curiosities and teach empathy and inclusivity towards individuals with disabilities. She emphasizes the importance of recognizing similarities and finding common interests, as well as using moments of curiosity as teaching opportunities. Amanda also suggests using the phrase 'excuse us while we're learning' to address inappropriate comments and engage in a respectful conversation. She encourages parents to have scripted conversations with their children about differences and to model empathy and inclusivity in their own behavior. Amanda also shares her books, 'Owen the Wonder' series, which teach children about disabilities and promote understanding and acceptance. Taking a leap of faith, Amanda left the classroom 11 years ago to launch Puzzle Pieces, a Kentucky-based nonprofit that serves individuals with disabilities, offering them targeted autism services, residential living, vocational training, supported employment, behavior services and more. Amanda's work has become a state and national model for disability services, allowing her to speak all over the country on advocacy, provider services and her perspective as a sibling. Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

"The Little Mermaid" sparked the Disney Renaissance of the '90s, burning unforgettable songs like "Under The Sea" and "Part of Your World" into the memories of Gen X and Millennials alike. Since then, Pixar and other studios have pushed animated features to levels we never thought possible. Digital framerates, lighting, sound and design are near perfection, making Disney's 1989 release feel a little dated. But old isn't necessarily bad. So listener Jackson M. posed this question to Shat The Movies: Does a 35-year-old "The Little Mermaid" still hold up? And it was a tough one to answer. In this episode, the Shat Crew explores whether Ariel was a nightmare child, why King Triton entrusted her safety to a singing crab and how Disney handled a teen mermaid's transition into a human girl. In this special bonus episode of In Search of the Crystal Skull, Arun and Patricia discuss about the 2023 film The Little Mermaid, a live action remake of the 1989 animated Disney film of the same name. Ariel, a young mermaid, falls in love with a prince named Eric who lives in the surface. Her father King Triton forbids her from going to the surface and prefers she stays in the ocean with him and her older sisters. An evil witch named Ursula wishes to get revenge on King Triton by tricking Ariel into joining her when she offers to turn her into a human for three days so she could get to Eric. The catch is, she cannot speak and she has amnesia. Will Ariel convince Eric to fall in love with her before it's too late? When the film premiered in theaters, it made over $569 million dollars on a $200 million dollar budget. It had mixed to positive reviews praising Halley Bailey as Ariel, the new songs written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, and adding necessary updates to a classic film. Hey everyone, so I was not planning on doing this but I honestly had too many thoughts after seeing it to not do a review, so here it is, my review of the 2023 live-action remake of the Disney animated classic, The Little Mermaid. I have been REALLY burnt out by these Disney remakes over the past number of years so I had very low expectations going into The Little Mermaid, combined with the fact that The Little Mermaid was never one of my favorite Disney films as a kid. With that said, is this the remake that could turn the tide on how Disney live-action remakes are perceived/made or is this another miss? Find out in this review. The Little Mermaid (2023): Directed by: Rob Marshall Screenplay by: David Magee Music by: Alan Menken Cinematography by: Dion Beebe Film Editing by: Wyatt Smith Production Design by: John Myhre Cast: Halle Bailey, Jonah Hauer-King, Melissa McCarthy, Javier Bardem, Daveed Diggs, Jacob Tremblay, Awkwafina Synopsis: The youngest of King Triton's daughters, and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea, and while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. With mermaids forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land, but ultimately places her life – and her father's crown – in jeopardy.

Britney and Nicole are usually pretty good at retaining what they saw in each week's movie, but for some reason with "The Little Mermaid" a lot didn't stick. However, the sisters did pick up on the classic Disney tropes of characters only having one parent or none at all, and Disney princesses who are desperately wanting to find adventure elsewhere but instead end up settling for falling in love and marrying some man. Ariel might be the worst offender yet! Britney and Nicole also discuss Sebastian's many job titles, Mermaid contract legality and wonder if King Triton is also a sea witch because of his magical powers.

Andreas was 10 or 11 when he saw Walt Disney's The Jungle Book and it changed his life. As a boy in Germany he dreamed of working for the studio that captured his imagination so completely… and he made that dream come true. A master animator, he brought King Triton to life in The Little Mermaid, Scar in The Lion King, and Jafar in Aladdin, to name just a few. He never surrendered his pencil, choosing to burnish his skills rather than adapt to computer technology. For most of the last decade he's been working on an animated film of his own called Moushka. Andreas is that rare artist who has carved his own path and been rewarded for his dedication (and talent). Leonard and Jessie are longtime friends and fans.

Whether it was your first movie in the theater like Lauren or you are still living that Little Mermaid life with husbandly antics accompanying every car ride like Jen, The Little Mermaid has certainly left its mark on us. Is there anything so breathtaking as Jodi Benson's voice? We'd argue that there very likely is not. And while we adore that fiercely independent mermaid, in this episode we're going to talk about a different creature entirely. A merman*, in fact. That's right! King Triton himself takes center stage as we explore an all-to-familiar challenge in parenting: really seeing our kids. Like...really really seeing them.  This isn't about permissiveness. It's about connection. And, speaking of connection, you can snag all of the journal prompts and conversation starters that come with our Magic Family membership for this episode for free here on our Patreon page @ patreon.com/magicalmindsetmoments. Let's dive in, shall we? *Apologies to all. Derek Zoolander will not be featured as part of this episode.

The Broads talk about whether or not relationships are "hard work." Amanda and Shandy take over when Colleen's wifi goes out to discuss the reality of being able to choose your own adventure in our society. Colleen returns to take the Broads on a ride from Smash City to Sleep City and all the way down to Poundtown. Smash or pass King Triton and his Zaddy energy? Should Harry Styles play the Goblin King if they ever remade Labyrinth?
