Implausible, I know, but I like to think that he had sex the night before, and a little bit of residue is blocking his urethra, allowing the urine to flow in two separate directions.

The troubling thing about William F. Buckley, the media savvy founder of modern American conservatism, isn't so much his politics, but his likability. How could such an overtly reactionary racist and homophobe (even if he was himself gay), be such a charming fellow beloved by all who knew him? That's one of the central questions which Sam Tanenhaus addresses in his massive new biography Buckley. Tanenhaus reveals shocking new details about the Buckley family's secret funding of segregationist newspapers and White Citizens Councils—information that even appalled Buckley's own son Christopher. Buckley explores how someone could be genuinely charitable and philanthropic in his personal affairs while promoting such corrosive politics. Tanenhaus argues we live in a moment when it seems "almost impossible to disentangle those personas," yet Buckley embodied both simultaneously. This wasn't just genteel bigotry—it was a foundational contradiction that changed the United States and now helps define the theatrical toxicity of Trump's America. 1. That is, that we might set off from Earth in the morning and arrive at Alpha Centauri system in time for tea. It's only 4.3 light years away after all. B. Space Colony. A standard theme of science fiction and science forecasting is that we'll establish space colonies one day. This is certainly possible, if not likely, but there are a number of issues to think through. Most importantly, you need energy – so if you are going to build a real space colony that's in space then the Earth – Moon Lagrange points 4 and 5 might be good since they keep pace with the Moon around its Earth orbit and so will get Earth-Moon levels of solar flux. Or you might float a gondola above the clouds of Venus and get even more solar flux – or you might do the traditional thing and build on the surface of a celestial body. Implausible Engineering – Episode 2a: Brain in a robot In a step towards technoevolution and potential immortality that some future generation of humanity will develop the ability to transfer their brains into robot bodies and hence have prolonged if not immortal lives. Various complications arise in trying to engineer this. Assuming you have all the vital veins and arteries attached to tubes which feeds a nutrient solution in and out with some kind of hemoglobin carrier in it that donates oxygen and removes carbon dioxide – all you are really doing is replacing the life support systems previously provided by a human body. But your brain is still a brain.   Implausible Engineering – Episode 2b: Evolving into robots As we like to discuss on Cheap Astronomy us humans, like the dinosaurs and the trilobites and the blue-green algae are just steps in a meandering evolutionary pathway to nowhere particular. In this post, I wish to outline an alternative picture to the grabby aliens model proposed by Hanson et al. (2021). The grabby aliens model assumes that "grabby aliens" expand far and wide in the universe, make clearly visible changes to their colonized volumes, and immediately prevent life from emerging in those volumes. In contrast, the picture I explore here involves what we may call "quiet expansionist aliens". This model also involves expansion far and wide, but unlike in the grabby aliens model, the expansionist aliens in this model do not make clearly visible changes to their colonized volumes, and they do not immediately prevent life from emerging in those volumes - although they do prevent emerging civilizations from developing to the point of rivaling the quiet expansionists' technology and power. The reason I explore this alternative picture is that I think it is a neglected possible model for hypothetical alien expansion. I am not claiming that it is the most plausible model a priori, but I think it is too plausible for it to be altogether dismissed, as it generally seems to be. 1. What changes in the quiet expansionist model? The most obvious change in this model compared to the grabby aliens model is that we would not be able to see a colonized volume from afar, and perhaps not even from up close. Likewise, the quiet expansionist model implies that there would be more instances of evolved life, including observers like us, since the expansionist aliens would not immediately prevent such observers from emerging within their colonized volumes; they could instead stay around and observe. Taken together, this means that quiet expansionist aliens could in theory be here already, and they could even have a lot of experience interacting with civilizations at our stage of development. Note that the grabby aliens model and the quiet expansionist model need not be mutually exclusive, as they could in principle be combined. That is, one could have a model in which there are both grabby (i.e. clearly visible) and quiet expansionist aliens that each rule their respective volumes, and different versions of the model could vary the relative proportion of these different colonization styles. (The original grabby aliens model only involves clearly visible expansionist aliens, not quiet expansionist ones; that is a helpful simplifying assumption, but it is worth being clear that it may be wrong.) 2. Arguments against the quiet expansionist model A reason the quiet expansionist model is rarely taken seriously is that there seem to be some compelling arguments against it. Let us therefore try to explore a couple of these arguments, to see how compelling they are and what they should lead us to conclude. 2.1 "Implausible motive" One argument is that it is implausible that an expansionist civilization would not visibly change its colonized volume. In particular, it is difficult to see what kind of underlying motive could make sense of such cosmic silence. The default expectation appears to be that we should instead see overt signs of colonization. How convincing is this as an argument against the plausibility of quiet expansionist aliens? In order to evaluate that, it seems helpful to first outline what could, speculatively, be some motives behind quiet expansion. For example, it is conceivable that quiet expansion could aid internal coordination and alignment in a civilization that spans numerous star systems and perhaps even countless galaxies. By staying minimally concentrated and diversified across its colonization volume, a civilization might minimize risks of internal drift and conflict. Another potential reason to stay silent is to try to learn about emerging civilizati...

Romans 1:24-2:1 // Tom NelsonAs thoughtful readers of the text, let's remember that rabbi Paul who wrote the book of Romans writes from a coherent biblical worldview.  A worldview is an attempt to make coherent sense of our lives and the world. All worldviews are built on faith assumptions that cannot be absolutely proven with certainty whether they are atheistic, (there is no god), pantheistic (everything is god or a force), or theistic (There is a God, distinct from us.) Worldviews, we all have them–whether they are carefully thought through or not, all of us wrestle with life's biggest questions and the most challenging experiences of our lives. Questions like where did we come from, is there meaning to our lives, what is wrong with the world, what about suffering and evil, and where are we heading? For Paul, the heart of the problem is the problem of the human heart. Since that fateful day long ago in the Garden of Eden, humans have chosen to embrace a lie, worshiping created things rather than the Creator. An unlikely creation.

This week Britney and Nicole discuss one of their favorite movies, "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom." Even though they enjoy the movie, they both realize there is a lot of cultural insensitivity and racism throughout, and oh yeah, it doesn't really even have a plot! There are so many actions scenes throughout this movie that have no plausibility and make no sense. No wonder Mythbusters tried so many myths from the franchise. The sisters discuss yet again another failed female character in Kate Capshaw's Willie Shaw, but gush about Ke Huy Quan's Shortround. 

We have quite the mixed set for you here in episode 145. We start off with a few notes on the Titan submersible that tragically imploded on its way to the Titanic. We switch it up for the second part of the show and discuss completely implausible movie scenes. I'm sure we can all name a few!
