New Patreon supporter Greig has reached back into the 1970's for his first pick and it from the year of the gang movie, 1979's The Wanderers! The production of The Wanderers (1979), directed by Philip Kaufman and co-written with his wife Rose Kaufman, was an adaptation of Richard Price's debut novel. Set in the Bronx of 1963, the film aimed to authentically portray the era's street gang culture. Filming took place on location in various Bronx neighborhoods, including Fordham Road, the Grand Concourse, and Pelham Parkway. Cinematographer Michael Chapman, known for his work on Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, contributed to the film's dynamic visual style. The cast featured emerging talents such as Ken Wahl, John Friedrich, Karen Allen, Toni Kalem, and Tony Ganios.Despite not achieving significant box office success upon its release, The Wanderers garnered critical acclaim for its vivid depiction of adolescence and gang life. Over time, it developed a cult following, appreciated for its blend of nostalgia, pathos, and drama. The film's soundtrack, featuring a selection of late 1950s and early 1960s rock and roll, further enhanced its period authenticity. In 1996, Warner Bros. re-released the film theatrically in the United States, reflecting its enduring appeal. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter.www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesbackTrailer Guy Plot SummaryIn a world teetering on the edge of innocence and rebellion, The Wanderers takes you back to 1963 Bronx, where leather jackets were armor and gangs ruled the streets like teenage warlords. Meet Richie and his crew — not just tough guys, but kings of the block — navigating high school, heartbreak, and turf wars in a city simmering with change. As rival gangs clash and the world around them begins to shift, these boys must face the end of adolescence and the beginning of something far more dangerous… adulthood. Artists and musician team up for BAU show There's plenty of cross-pollination behind the scenes at the Poetry of Place exhibit scheduled to open March 8 with a reception at the Beacon Artist Union (BAU) Gallery. Next month will be mixed-media artist and BAU member Karen Allen's turn to display in the showcase gallery visible from the street, and she invited Jenn Wiggs, who lives in Missouri, to share the space. "Jenn said that she always wanted a show in New York, so I found one," says Allen, who resides in Westchester County. Allen discovered Wiggs' work online during the pandemic, and they gelled. During regular virtual visits, they discuss approach, technique and philosophy. Another of Allen's partnerships will also be on display - with vibraphonist Chris Dingman. They met in October at an Ossining art fair after Dingman paused to study one of Allen's pieces. "I saw him ponder it for a while and then circle around it like a shark," Allen says. For their collaboration, she lends the musician a piece of her art and "I connect with it and visualize the energy," says Dingman, who lives in Nyack. He improvises tones, splices them together and drenches the mix in effects, resulting in experimental ambient sounds. Dingman will perform at the gallery during the opening reception with a hip-high vibraphone, a cross between a piano and a percussion instrument. His 4- to 6-minute compositions will be accessible through QR codes. The Dingman track responding to Allen's "Shadow Hamadryade" stacks layers of cascading notes over a propulsive rhythm. Intertwining drone tones and a prominent hum compete for attention. After the emergence of a throbbing vocal, the song builds to a crescendo. Another piece of music is inspired by Allen's "Third Eye of Hook Mountain," which augments the vaguely discernible features of the Nyack landmark with an underbelly of what could be a river of darkness or primordial layering. As Dingman's tones unfold, dynamics swell, notes seem to play at random intervals and an electronic, Morse Code-like tone chimes. Allen's artistic vision began with a realistic bent: landscapes, figuratives and still lifes. But after meeting Wiggs, she dug into her feelings and "let the spirit take control." According to her website, Allen follows "visual intuitions" and explores a "poetic vision" to convey moods, rather than objects, as she turns toward abstraction. With that approach, "it's easy to start getting into a canvas or montage," she says. "The hard part is knowing when it's done." Some abstract artists are averse to interpreting their work. Others say they want only to know how a piece makes viewers feel - ask at your peril if that cloudy figure in the corner is a bird. For Wiggs, "if someone tells me they see a squirrel and I recognize the squirrel, I'm painting it out," says Wiggs. "Everyone wants to know the meaning behind an edgy piece of art or music. The question is often the answer because sometimes words fail us, and it's just about how we respond emotionally." A joint opening reception for Poetry of Place; Translucent Hues, by Eileen Sackman; and a member group show is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. on March 8 at the BAU Gallery, 506 Main St. The exhibits continue through April 6. BAU Gallery is open Saturday and Sunday, noon to 6 p.m., and by appointment. See baugallery.org.

We're deep into our second annual Christmas movie theme and we haven't mined any material from, or inspired by, the Charles Dickens classic “A Christmas Carol”. Fuck it, this year we'll do two adaptations and maybe catch an old version of the story next year. This particular adaptation was prime basic cable Christmas break material when we were kids and in many ways it holds up and even impresses in certain ways. Bill Murray could carry a comedy in the 80s and his leading role of a stingy TV executive Scrooge-stand-in does deliver some quality jokes bouncing off of an extended comedic cast. Richard Donner's 1988 Christmas comedy “SCROOGED” remains pretty worthy holiday cheer and there's no shortage of prime 80s stars including Bobcat Goldthwait, Carol Kane, David Johansen, Alfre Woodard and Karen Allen. There's also some nice appearances from veteran actors of TV and film such as Robert Mitchum, John Forsythe, John Houseman and Buddy Hackett. Miles Davis is even in this thing. Folks, you gotta bring out the bells and whistles when you're adapting a story that everybody knows. You gotta throw some horror in there. Maybe even a little sadism. Just go with it. What's the best baseball movie ever? For Koto creative director Caroline Fox, there's only one answer to that question: 1993's The Sandlot. It tells the story of Scotty Smalls, a fifth-grader in a new town, making new friends, and learning about baseball. Co-starring Karen Allen, Denis Leary, and James Earl Jones, the movie has lessons about collaboration and overcoming challenges. Caroline talks about her work with Koto, team and client relationships, plus we dive into the fun advertising and graphic design from a bygone era, as featured in The Sandlot.-The Sandlothttps://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108037/https://www.si.com/fannation/sneakers/off-court/pf-flyers-baseballism-collaborate-ahead-of-world-series-Baseball movieshttps://www.mlb.com/news/best-baseball-movies-of-all-time-c301609142https://variety.com/lists/best-baseball-movieshttps://www.comicsands.com/league-of-their-own-reunion-Koto branding for Workdayhttps://koto.studio/work/workday/

In 1984, John Carpenter brought to earth a movie than blended road trip, romance, sci fi, and just a touch of Stockholm Syndrome. It's Karen Allen and Jeff Bridges in STARMAN.
In honor of the passing of the late and great James Earl Jones, I have dug out of the old archives the Sandlot and cleaned it up. As our own baseball season is winding down, nice to reminisce about the boys of summer and one of the greatest voices to grace the silver screen. As an aside, my own voice on this track sounds unrecognizable, yeesh. How will the Sandlot on this 10 year old episode hold up? Host: Nic Panel: Scott, Billy, Daniel Directed by David Mickey Evans Starring: Tom Guiry, Mike Vitar, Art LaFleur, Patrick Renna, Chauncey Leopardi, Marty York, Brandon Quintin Adams, Grant Gelt, Shane Obedzinski, Victor DiMattia, Denis, Karen Allen, and the late great James Earl Jones
2003's biggest surprise (besides The OC and maybe Arnold becoming a governor.) A movie, star, and director that are all SO much better than you'd expect. Remember 2003? This movie encapsulates it. The Rock is a professional bounty hunter who hates his job, guns, and a wannabe Indiana Jones named Travis (Seann William Scott), who's too busy searching for a mythical golden artifact in the Amazon to answer his dad's phone calls. Rosario Dawson is reliably great in a well-written part that's basically Karen Allen from Raiders of the Lost Ark minus the drinking competition (

Unlike lots of people their age, neither Laci nor Matt grew up with the Indiana Jones films. But at least one of them has fallen in love with the franchise as an adult, especially this first film. The two talk about the origins of Raiders of the Lost Ark on a beach in Hawaii in 1977 as Steven Spielberg and George Lucas built sandcastles together. One imagines they were very well-crafted and functional sandcastles, Lucas's a little too clinical, Spielberg's a little sappy. Still, they were good castles, is what we're saying. Matt recalls his first time watching Raiders of the Lost Ark at the relatively late age of 16, while Laci has mushed all the Indiana Jones movies together and experiences all of time as one instant. But she loves Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones! He's doing a lot of work, she says. Then the podcast goes very thoroughly through the film, recapping Raiders of the Lost Ark in excruciating detail. Harrison Ford and Karen Allen are great, of course, but Paul Freeman as René Belloq kind of steals the movie. Does the film do enough with Indiana Jones's fear of snakes? Is the Raiders of the Lost Ark car chase the best in movie history? Is the plot of this movie too hard to follow? This and much more is litigated over this spirited two-hour Raiders of the Lost Ark movie review. Watch this episode in full: https://youtu.be/tZNfFFFYhkQ Next week: A.I. On this week's show, a review of the 1988's Scrooged directed by Richard Donner, and starring Bill Murray, Karen Allen, Alfre Woodard, Carol Kane, and Bobcat Goldthwait. Thanks in part to Murray's ability (or lack thereof), Donner's directing, their egos, and on-set clashes between the pair during production, this darkly comedic and horror tinged take on the Charles Dickens classic, A Christmas Carol, has gone on to become a, somewhat divisive, holiday classic. But first, what TV shows have great holiday themed episodes? We want to hear from you! If you like what you hear, please subscribe. Enjoy!
Stupid summer movies, Anheuser-Busch CEO interview, Stuttering John v. Karl, Drew Crime, another cruise ship passenger goes overboard, and a call to the innovative doctor making thicker dongs. Lyla tries to eat Trudi's prescription medication. Insane police body cam footage has dropped of the Texas Mall shooting. Donald Trump thinks Ivanka Trump is hot and wonders how she is in bed. Gene Simmons almost killed everyone in a concert fire. Thankfully every single concertgoer was filming with their phones. The CEO of Anheuser-Busch, Brendan Whitworth, went on CBS This Morning and said a bunch of nothing. John Boyega is finally allowed to talk to Jamie Foxx. Reveals nothing. Wheel of Fortune: Ryan Seacrest is getting hate for landing the hosting gig, but TMZ's Harvey Levin has his back. Vanna White goes on the offensive because she hasn't had a "raise" in 16 years. $3M/year for 73 years hasn't been enough. We deep dive on a riveting 1988 interview with Vanna (the last interview she did). Danny Bonaduce is doing fine. Madonna has been hospitalized for a bacterial infection of her butt or something. Pete Davidson is in rehab for a "tune up". Stuttering John made a return to podcasting on Misery Loves Company and Karl Hamburger destroyed him. Fall Out Boy re-did 'We Didn't Start the Fire' and it sucks. Tori Spelling is getting divorced. Her podcast is awful as well. Christine Baumgartner is squatting in Kevin Costner's house. Lushful Aesthetics is here to fatten up your dong. We inquire about our own personal wangs. Pump yours up today! We HAVE to tell Jonah Falcon about it. YouTube star Shallon Lester lays into Not-a-Prince Harry and that beast, Meghan Markle. She is suing the royal couple. Sir Trevor Phillips takes aim at that beast, Meghan, as well. Drew Crime: More victims are coming out against the North End Rapist. His hot girlfriend is standing by him. Bryan Kohberger's sister hates him too, but mostly because he stole her phone. He's facing the firing squad. NASCAR legend Jimmie Johnson is in the middle of a true crime massacre. John Legend and Chrissy Teigen paid some random chick to have another brat. A Delta plane landed without it's nose gear. The 'Summer of Falling Off a Cruise Ship' continues as a woman is saved after going overboard. Tresa Baldas has the latest on Ethan Crumbley's parents excuse-making. Movies: Trudi wants to see the Barbie movie. BranDon would rather watch Oppenheimer. Drew has never heard of either movie. Christian Bale wanted nothing to do with The Flash. Karen Allen is 71 and "unrecognizable" in the new Indiana Jones movie. Erika Eleniak is unrecognizable too. Animal House couldn't be made today.
