What if Anthony Michael Hall wasn't the face of 1980s teen angst? What if instead of starring in The Breakfast Club, he was flipping omelets at a diner or selling insurance in suburban Chicago? This week on Celebrity Jobber with Jeff Zito, we dive into the alternate reality of one of the most recognizable faces from John Hughes’ iconic coming-of-age films. Anthony Michael Hall — the original “geek” who made awkward cool — joins Jeff to talk about what could have been if Hollywood hadn’t come calling. Hall shot to fame with a string of unforgettable roles in Sixteen Candles, Weird Science, and The Breakfast Club, becoming the go-to actor for every lovable outsider in 80s cinema. But he wasn’t just a teen dream. He broke molds again by becoming the youngest cast member ever on Saturday Night Live at just 17 years old — a bold move that showed his comedic range and fearless ambition. Over the years, Hall has shed the high school persona and proven his versatility in serious roles — from the gritty The Dead Zone to portraying Whitey Ford in 61 and even embodying a cold-hearted villain in The Dark Knight. But despite the evolution, one question remains: What job would Anthony Michael Hall be doing today if he never got that lucky break? Many stars have walked a thin line between fame and flipping burgers. Remember Kanye West’s stint at The Gap? Or Brad Pitt sweating it out in a chicken suit for El Pollo Loco? Hall might’ve ended up a music producer, a writer, or even a motivational speaker — but one thing’s for sure: he never saw himself as just a jobber.

Description: In the summer of 2020, as Jen was beginning to process the loss of her 26-year marriage, there was one person walking her own similar but different journey, and understood many of the feelings of anger, grief, shame, and loss that Jen was just beginning to feel. Someone who knew how that disappointment felt. Jessica N. Tuner, founder of the popular lifestyle blog The Mom Creative, was a few months ahead of Jen in processing the loss of her 16-year marriage to her husband and father of her three children. Today, Jessica shared with Jen and Amy what the road to recovery has looked like for her, including grieving the end of the life she thought she would have forever, the change of her identity, navigating  the messy false-starts, and clawing her way back from what felt like “the floor of hell”. Jessica compiled those hard-fought lessons into a book she's hoping will be a manifesto of hope to others, called I Thought It Would Be Better Than This: Rise From Disappointment, Regain Control, and Rebuild a Life You Love. *** Thought-provoking Quotes: Nothing about what I thought my life was going to be, is my life now. Now I feel like I walk around in the world and I feel grief and loss and disappointment and dismay from everybody. It's amazing how my eyes have opened. It was a big awakening to the loss people are living with everyday.–Jessica N. Turner When we made the decision to divorce, I felt like I was sitting on the floor of hell, everything was dust, everything was different.–Jessica N. Turner No matter how devastating the loss, the life you can still rebuild is astonishing. – Jen Hatmaker Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Say Anything film (1989) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098258/ Sixteen Candles film (1984) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088128/ Cameron Crowe - https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001081/ John Hughes - https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000455/ James Spader - https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000652/ Some Kind of Wonderful film (1987) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094006/ I Go Crazy by Flesh for Lulu - https://open.spotify.com/track/2o1AevEuv39qZAVy6k2pmn The Breakfast Club film (1985) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088847/ Weird Science film (1985) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090305 Ferris Bueller's Day Off film (1986) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091042/ Planes, Trains and Automobiles film (1987) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093748/ Uncle Buck film (1989) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098554 Pretty in Pink film (1986) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091790 Beethoven film (1992) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103786 I Thought It Would Be Better Than This: Rise From Disappointment, Regain Control, and Rebuild a Life You Love by Jessica Turner - https://amzn.to/40yC1fF Outlander - https://www.starz.com/us/en/series/outlander/21796 Onsite - https://experienceonsite.com/ ONSITE COURSE [BOOK ORDER BONUS]: What now? What a CreepSome of the Creepiest Plots to John Hughes FilmsSeason 28, Episode 1John Hughes accomplished the remarkable feat of being a quintessential Baby Boomer while still resonating with Generation X and Millennials through his films. Movies—such as 16 Candles, The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Pretty in Pink, and She's Having a Baby—became essential viewing for generations that felt overlooked by mainstream media. He genuinely seemed like “one of us.”However, when we examine his work through a modern lens, it is difficult to overlook an alarming pattern of racism, homophobia, white privilege,  and sexism, as well as some questionable behavior exhibited by the male leads in his films from the 1980s and 1990s. This week we start a new end of year tradition as we celebrate 40 years of 1984 movies with “Our Best, Year of Movies Draft”.  That's right. 1984 is maybe the most consequential year in movie mania history as it's the beginning of the GenX blockbuster era . The Terminator, The Karate Kid, SixteenCandles, Ghostbusters (heck, even Indiana Jones makes an appearance), are but a few of the 1984 monster hits that informed what Hollywood would become for 40 years! But because we couldn't possibly talk about all them, we decided on an fantasy league style draft where our hostfull panel will draft their “Starting Five” best movies of 1984. Hard choices will have to be made but there are no winners or losers, just lively conversation and good cheer! Join Grim Shea, Marke., Johnny Heck and Retro Cool Nerd's Jimmy “The Gent” Leszcynski as they dig deep into the nostalgia well to draft their best 1984 movies.

This week, I'm reading the seventh chapter of the Peter David penned movie novelization of the 1991 Rocketeer film.  This chapter introduces Jenny Blake, Cliff's girlfriend (called Betty in Dave Stevens' original comic as an ode to pin up icon Bettie Paige).  That part, in the film, went to Jennifer Connelly, who you may also remember from 1986's Labyrinth.   When I was a teen, I had VHS copies of Labyrinth, Howard the Duck, Some Kind of Wonderful, Sixteen Candles, and The Rocketeer taped off the TV (often the edited for TV versions and/or missing certain scenes) and those films were often on rotation on weekend mornings for me.  This section also introduces the character of Lothar, a character Dave Stevens based off character actor Rondo Hatton. John Hughes is known for making popular movies about teenagers in the 1980s. He started as a National Lampoon's Magazine writer and then began writing scripts in 1979. In 1984, he directed "Sixteen Candles". The next year, he directed two well-known movies, "The Breakfast Club" and this 80s flick. Many people think "The Breakfast Club" is better, but this one is special because it mixes comedy with science fiction. The movie is about two unpopular boys in high school who use a computer to create the "perfect woman." The woman they create, Lisa, is beautiful and has magical powers. This leads to many funny and exciting situations. If you'd like to hear more about "Weird Science" from 1985, you can listen to this podcast episode with Tim Williams and guest co-hosts Ben Carpenter, Darby Mirocha, and Laramy Wells. Here are some additional behind-the-scenes trivia we were unable to cover in this episode: The pianist at the party, played by Kym Malin, did her own stunts, which were quite elaborate. For the scene, Malin was attached to a scaffold and lifted up the chimney where a large vacuum tore her clothes off. After that, a crane lifted her out of the chimney and dropped her into the backyard swimming pool. The film went by some very different titles in different movie markets across the globe. In Japan, the film was called "Electric Venus", in Germany, it was named "Cool Magic with Lisa". In Denmark, it was released as "Touch Me, I'm Yours", while in Finland and Sweden, the film was known as "Dream Woman". "Sixteen Candles" is basically what happens when a teenager's worst nightmares come true all in one day. Samantha Baker turns 16, and not only does her entire family forget her birthday, but she also has to deal with a geeky freshman trying to win her heart, her crush not even knowing she exists, and her grandparents invading her privacy. Dave, Rob and Kurt will dig into all the funny, and perhaps bad parts of this 40 year old movie. Add in a wild party at the popular kid's house and a very confused exchange of underwear, and you've got the ultimate recipe for teen embarrassment. It's a hilarious ride through the minefield of high school with a sweet ending that proves even the worst days can turn out surprisingly great!    Pandora: https://pandora.app.link/iq8iShjXOLb   Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/totally-80s-and-90s-recall/id1662282694    Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/11dk5TUoLUk4euD1Te1EYG?si=b37496eb6e784408    Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/1960c8f9-158d-43ac-89a6-d868ea1fe077/totally-80s-and-90s-recall    YouTube Podcasts: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLH9lGakNgCDZUkkHMUu88uXYMJu_33Rab&si=xo0EEVJRSwS68mWZ   Contact Us: Website: https://totally80s90srecall.podbean.com/  Email: 80s90srecall@gmail.com LinkTree:https://linktr.ee/80s90srecall
