RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey is joined again by Vidar Hjardeng MBE, Inclusion and Diversity Consultant for ITV News across England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands for the next of his regular audio described theatre reviews for 2025 This week we have the multi-award winning musical ‘Chicago' as the current UK tour visited the Alexandra Theatre in Birmingham with description by Professional Audio Describer Anne Hornsby. About ‘Chicago' ‘CHICAGO', the "sexiest musical ever" (Metro) is currently on it's UK tour starring Strictly Come Dancing Professional Dancer and TV Star Janette Manrara (It Takes Two, Burn The Floor, Glee) as Roxie Hart, West End and TV star Brenda Edwards (Loose Women, Chicago, The X Factor) as Matron ‘Mama' Morton and West End leading man Dan Burton (Gypsy, The Mousetrap, White Christmas) as Billy Flynn. With 6 Tony Awards, 2 Olivier Awards, a Grammy® and thousands of standing ovations, ‘CHICAGO' truly is “SUPERB” (Daily Telegraph). Set amidst the razzle-dazzle decadence of the 1920s, CHICAGO is the story of Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who murders her on-the-side lover after he threatens to walk out on her. Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes the public, the media and her rival cellmate, Velma Kelly, by hiring Chicago's slickest criminal lawyer to transform her malicious crime into a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which might just as easily be ripped from today's tabloids. Created by the musical theatre talents of John Kander, Fred Ebb and legendary choreographer Bob Fosse, ‘it's sexy, sassy score with one show-stopping song after another includes “Razzle Dazzle”, “Cell Block Tango”, and “All That Jazz”. With 6 Tony Awards, 2 Olivier Awards, a Grammy® and thousands of standing ovations, ‘CHICAGO' truly is “SUPERB” (Daily Telegraph). 一般被认为早期的 Jazz Rap 歌曲是 “Talkin' All That Jazz” , 发行于 1988 年,来自纽约的 Stetsasonic 组合为了回击 James Mutume (Funk 乐队 Mutume 主创)对 Hip-Hop 音乐形式的的批评,旋律采样了 Lonnie Liston Smith “Expansions”;纽约组合 Gang Starr 1989 年首作 "No More Mr.Nice Guy” 中就有几首采样爵士乐的歌曲,这促使了导演 Spike Lee 邀请 DJ Premier 为他 1990 年的电影 “Mo Better Blues” 制作了电影歌曲“Jazz Thing”,这首歌对爵士大家们的致敬使它成为了 Jazz Rap 的经典代表;Gang Starr 的前三张可以被认为是 Jazz Rap,从 1994 的 “Hard to Earn”开始更加硬核;Gang Starr 成员之一 Guru 的 Jazzmatazz 系列,其中发表于 1993 年的 Vol.1 中不仅有当时拥抱融合爵士乐的前辈,也有同辈的跨界爵士乐手和 rapper;纽约集体 Native Tongue 在采样手法上跳出了以往 James Brown 的范围,重要组合 A Tribe Called Quest 从 1990 年发表首张专辑开始就成了 Jazz Rap 高水准的代表,1991 年的 “Low End Theory” 奠定了 90s 东岸说唱的美学,1993 年的 “Midnight Marauders” 更是在制作层面达到新的高度;推荐纪录片 “Beats Rhymes & Life: The Travel of A Tribe Called Quest” (2011)1992 年 Pete Rock 和 C.L. Smooth 的 “Mecca and the Soul Brothers” 是超越时代的制作水平,Pete Rock 制作风格的独特性;以局外人姿态进入 Jazz Rap 场景的组合 Digable Planets 两张专辑都是我们的爱,1993 年的 “Reachin' (A New Refutation Of Time And Space” 明显体现出 Butterfly 特立独行的抽象哲思和采样上的想法,1994 年的 “Blowout Comb” 主题更多围绕黑人民族主义主张;来自费城乐队形式的 The Roots 的 “Organix”(1993)和 “Do You Want More?!!!??! Dream Warriors “And Now the Legacy Begins” (1991) , Brand New Heavies “Heavy Rhyme Experience: Vol.1” (1992) , 英国 Us3,法国 MC Soolar, Soon E MC,制作人 Jimmy Jay;02. Episode Playlist:A Tribe Called Quest - “Scenario”Stetsasonic - “Talkin' All That Jazz”Gang Starr - “Jazz Thing”Gang Starr - “The Place We Dwell”Guru - “Loungin'" ft. I chat with Karen Mason about her career and latest recording, Karen Mason and All That Jazz!, which celebrates the songs of John Kander and Fred Ebb. I also play a few selections from the recording. Ms. Mason has starred on Broadway, Off-Broadway, television, in concert, and in the recording studio. She's been praised for her “fierce emotion” by The New York Times, her “innate comic ability” by Playbill and her “delightful instrument” by the Daily News. She is a 14-time Manhattan Association of Cabarets (MAC) Award winner; most recently she was the recipient of the 2019 MAC Lifetime Achievement Award.

Bob Fosse's autobiographical musical about how he makes art until he dies is all about a guy who's doing too much and can't cope, yet he's compelled to never stop working. Name an addiction and he's got it. Yet his 8 1/2-esque story---with Roy Scheider playing a heightened version of his director---is a potent one, with all its flashy editing, production design and terrific choreography. We weren't huge fans of the songs in All That Jazz, but these actors sure can dance, especially Ann Reinking (whose name is pronounced "Rine-king"). On episode 256 of The AwardsWatch Podcast, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade is joined by AwardsWatch contributors Dan Bayer and Josh Parham to discuss Sean Baker's latest film, Anora, and discuss their favorite films to win the prestigious Palme d'Or award. While we are coming towards the end of fall festival season, one of the hottest festival films of the year was the winner of the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival back in May. Anora, written and directed by Sean Baker and starring Mikey Madison, has been the one of the most talked about films of the year, garnering praise from audiences around the world and setting itself up for a big run later this Oscar season. But just how good is the film? Ryan, Josh, and Dan breakdown Baker's latest, what they think of the film overall, the performances, mild discussion on the film's ending, and where they see its path in the Oscar race moving forward. Once they were done with that, they moved into a larger discussion over their favorite past winners of the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival, the Palme d'Or. With some of the most influential, celebrated films of their respected years winning the award, the Palme d'Or is a signal for excellence in cinema. Some of the films discussed ranged from All That Jazz, Taxi Driver, Pulp Fiction, The Piano, Brief Encounter, Blow Up, The Conversation, Parasite, Shoplifters, Barton Fink, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, The Tree of Life, and many more. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 1h49m. We will be back next to do discuss the main trifecta of fall festivals - Telluride, Toronto and New York - then in two weeks for AFI FEST Film Festival and take a look at the Oscar race after each. Music: “Modern Fashion” from AShamaleuvmusic (intro), “B-3” from BoxCat Games Nameless: The Hackers RPG Soundtrack (outro).
It's showtime, folks! This week, we make our last stop in the 1970's era of Roy Scheider's career to talk about his Oscar nominated turn in Bob Fosse's All That Jazz. Sarah and MJ are joined by Randy Burrows of the Uncut Gems podcast to talk about legacy, commerce, art, and reckoning with your mortality. You know, all the light stuff.
It's showtime, folks! This week, Roy Scheider closes out his 1970s run with another all-timer, Bob Fosse's existential masterpiece ALL THAT JAZZ! This haunting meditation on life, death, and show business is one of the high water marks not just of Scheider's career, but of cinema in general.

Now, Natalie Erika James takes the reins to ROSEMARY'S BABY, revealing the story preceding Roman Polanski's iconic 1968 movie. This story follows Terry Gionofrrio (Julia Garner), a New York dancer toughing her way through a marathon of auditions to try and land work. It's already difficult to stand out in New York, but doing so right after sustaining a severe foot injury? Impossible.Coping using pain pills, Terry goes on a bender, and after one particularly bad night, is scooped off the street by the wealthy, doting Castavets - Minnie (Dianne Weist) and Roman (Kevin McNally). The childless couple, drawn to the struggling artist, become her benefactors, offering her a gorgeous apartment in the opulent Bramford building: rent-free. (Daniel, stop drooling. You're embarassing yourself.)But as the days and weeks pass, with more pain pills, impossible auditions, and a one-night experience of which Terry can't quite place the details regarding how she ended up in another's bed, she encounters these bizarre nightmares, hallucinatory and threatening in scope. The once high ceilings of her apartment appear to slowly shrink in size. She swears she sees presences lurking round every corner. And the Castavets? They're a bit too friendly, a bit too doting, a bit too...possessive.Natalie Erika James' movie is surreal, theatrical. At times, I'd dare even say, pulpy. The camera bobs and weaves through musical sequences and hallucinations, borrowing from films such as THE RED SHOES and ALL THAT JAZZ. But the sinister beating heart lies in the real-life horror befalling Terry, one about bodily autonomy, sexual assault and an obsession for success that grows to prevail over one's own wellbeing. This grounds the movie so bitterly that I find the surrounding silliness to often be a welcome tonal reprieve from an otherwise all-too-real nightmare. Mix all this with rich, textural photography, a color palette of decadent chestnuts, mustards and moss greens & costumes that teleport me to 1960s New York. The result's a hazy, tense thriller that breathes new life into a nearly 60-year-old franchise, posing James as an exciting new voice in horror.---Follow The Movies on Twitter: @TheMovies_Pod and Facebook: The MoviesCredit Song: "Be My Baby"- The Ronettes
This is a big one, folks. Alana and Sam take a deep dive into cinematic meta-fiction as they explore the relationship between the seminal film 8 1/2 (1963) and its four most prominent New Hollywood descendants: Alex in Wonderland (1970), All That Jazz (1979), and Stardust Memories (1980). We approached this project with the seriousness and rigor we feel it deserves which apparently to us means making you listen to us talk for nearly four hours! Topics include: the 1976 Tonys, acting teachers in 70s movies, and the ontological argument.Start timecodes for each segment: Federico Fellini's 8 1/2 - 0:00:00Paul Mazursky's Alex in Wonderland - 0:56:10Bob Fosse's All That Jazz - 1:46:35Woody Allen's Stardust Memories - 2:23:57
Bob Fosse was a troubled genius. Both are on full display in his 1979 semi-autobiographical film “All That Jazz.”

We discuss unique cultural concepts, from how natural disasters like earthquakes shaped Jo's perspective to how Ego sees nature's power in South Africa. Their story also includes pivotal moments like a cross-cultural marriage proposal, navigating immigration interviews, and humorous exchanges—like how something as simple as a chocolate bar led to conversations about their differences. It's showtime–in this episode, Chad takes us through the opening of one of Ethan Hawke's curator picks: Bob Fosse's autobiographical kaleidoscope, All That Jazz (1979). Here's the Motion Pictures Editors Guild on what makes All That Jazz the fourth-best edited film in history, and Hawke himself on “personal filmmaking at its finest.” The Bright Wall/Dark Room Podcast is co-hosted by Veronica Fitzpatrick and Chad Perman and produced and edited by Eli Sands. Today's title comes from a musical. I'm not sure if it's from All that Jazz- the 1979 movie about Bob Fosse's life or from Bob Fosse's 1975 smash, Chicago. It was probably chosen because in today's episode, Michael Zbornak pays his mother a surprise visit. During which she learns his life is basically falling apart and he's even quit his gig playing sax in a band. So come along as Dorothy learns about tough love, Blanche learns about the Rough variation, Rose fights back- again- and Sophia remains the old one in today's episode All That Jazz.

Director and legendary cinematographer Kirsten Johnson is known for nonfiction work that is inventive, artful, expressive, and maximal. The same can be said of the film that blew her mind -- Bob Fosse's All That Jazz. The semi-autobiographical film brings us Joe Gideon (Roy Scheider), a peripatetic creative force working simultaneously to mount a major Broadway production and complete post-production on a feature film, all while maintaining a lifestyle fueled by cigarettes, pills, one-night stands, and Visine, and still finding time for his adoring 12-year old daughter, Michelle. We learn why the iconic film first transfixed Kirsten, and how she continues to be inspired by Fosse's ingenious use of dance, documentary, theater, music, and more. Host John Cooper shares his personal ties to the film, calling on his days in New York's theater scene of the 1970s. And co-host Tabitha Jackson (a.k.a. Wife of Kirsten) does her level best to maintain her professional distance as the conversation unfolds. Listen and subscribe to The Film that Blew My Mind on Apple Podcasts.
