We'll give you all we've got to give because we don't care too much for money, cuz money Can't Buy Me Love. It's the beginning of McNerdy month, as we dive into the early films of Patrick Dempsey, Dr. McDreamy (or McSteamy, or whatever he was called). First up is Can't Buy Me Love, co-starring the amazing Amanda Peterson and underutilized Courtney Gains. It's a high school tale of be careful what you wish for.

The central message of chapter 5 challenges our relationship with money and possessions, reminding us that true satisfaction, security, and solace cannot be found in material wealth. Solomon, despite his immense riches, concludes that pursuing wealth for its own sake is ultimately meaningless. We're encouraged to shift our focus from accumulating possessions to treasuring our relationship with God. The sermon draws fascinating parallels between our modern struggles with materialism and the timeless wisdom of Scripture, urging us to consider: Are we serving God or money? This message is profoundly relevant in our consumer-driven society, prompting us to examine our hearts and priorities. As we reflect on these truths, we're called to find joy in God's gifts without making them our idols, and to cultivate a legacy of faith that transcends material success.

We watched the geek-to-chic classic "Can't Buy Me Love" with our friend Ben Cheeves, and there's a $1,000 telescope at the mall with all of our names on it. This modern-day Pygmalion in high school may be well-worn territory today, but way back in 1987, this concept was fresh as a daisy. Nerdy Ronald Miller (Patrick Dempsey) uses his saved-up lawn-mowing cash to bail head cheerleader Cindy Mancini (Amanda Peterson) out of some fiduciary troubles, and young Ronald goes from "totally geek to totally chic." Patrick Dempsey is adorable in this movie, and much like Audrey Hepburn and Rachel Leigh Cook after him, it just takes a bit of hair product and chucking those glasses for the audience to realize he wasn't the horrid slob the movie characters all think he is. Dr. McDreamy may be years away, but we still see the spark of the handsome man everyone's mom loves - that effortless mop of curls is the envy of women everywhere, and that smile can just knock your socks off! Amanda Peterson is really doing some good work as well - Cindy never comes off mean-spirited or above Ronald - we leave that to the truly rotted group of popular kids. We do get some "Saved by the Bell" vibes from the movie, and sometimes the script is heavy-handed, but this movie is a 1987 time capsule if there ever was one. Every house in suburbia had that daybed, and if you owned or coveted a white convertible Volkswagen Cabriolet, you're gay now. Courtney GainsTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as l get to know actor & musician Courtney Gains in this episode, we chat about his growing up in some rough parts of Los Angeles, and why he decided to become an actor. We also talk about why he eventually moved to Savanah and embedded himself into the local music scene there. Naturally, l ask him about several of his films, including Back to the Future, Can't Buy Me Love, Colors, The Burbs, Queen Bees, and most notably, Children of the Corn. Courtney shares fun anecdotes and the reason for his longevity in show business. Then we discuss his music. Courtney has been a musician for just about as long as he has been an actor. He has released several albums and is part of a new project that came out December 6th. Marshes to Mountains is a compilation album with more than 100 songs. 100% of the proceeds from this album got to support those affected by the recent hurricane that impacted areas from Savanah to Asheville.
