Eric, Travis's producer, joins this episode to break down the real cost of a “simple” family day at Universal Studios and what it reveals about how we spend money. Eric is a lifelong Universal fan, a dad, and a storyteller who's willing to put actual numbers behind the “theme park bleed” most families feel but never calculate. His mix of dad-anxiety over lanyards and big-picture perspective on experiences vs. stuff makes this a fun and surprisingly insightful money conversation. On this episode we talk about: The true, itemized cost of a one-day Universal Studios trip for a family Whether express/fast passes are worth it and when to skip them How parents think about “sanity taxes” like hotel choices, parking, and alcohol Why spending on experiences can be a better use of money than buying more things Using price comparisons (like cruises or Disney) to decide what feels “worth it” Top 3 Takeaways A “day” at a major theme park can easily become a roughly $2,300 experience once you include tickets, express passes, food, souvenirs, parking, and a nearby hotel—so plan with that full number in mind, not just the ticket price. Express or fast passes are often worth the money when time is limited or kids are involved, but you can save a lot by pairing off-peak days (like Wednesdays) with regular tickets instead. Many “annoying” small expenses (lanyards, refillable cups, parking) hurt more emotionally than the big-ticket items, but if the experience creates great memories with your family, it may still be a justified and intentional spend. Notable Quotes “We added it all up… it was $2,296.98 for a day—and I would do it again.” “If you're going to spend money, spend money on experiences instead of things.” “I'm spending like two grand, but the thing that's bothering me is the lanyards and this freaking Minion cup.” Connect with Travis: Instagram: https://instagram.com/travischappell Other: https://travischappell.com Travis Makes Money is made possible by High Level – the All-In-One Sales & Marketing Platform built for agencies, by an agency. The Spin Chagrin, a concept that finds Frank having to watch a movie he's never seen before based on the random spin of a wheel filled with off-the-wall genres, continues into its fourth year. All the categories are quotables from Frank himself. In this episode, Frank's category was "Ill-advised archaeology.” For this category, he watched and reviewed the 1998 action horror, Dolph Lundgren-vehicle The Minion.
In this episode of The Rainmaking Podcast, Scott Love speaks with Rachel Minion, founder of Rockstar & Moon, about how professionals can make a bigger impact through smarter, more intentional marketing. Rachel challenges the instinct to “do more” and instead urges business owners and service professionals to do less—but do it better. She explains that spreading energy across too many platforms and initiatives leads to diluted results, while focusing on a few high-impact actions accelerates growth. A core piece of that foundation is capturing success: turning client wins into case studies, testimonials, and social proof that sell future work far more effectively than any sales pitch. Rachel shares how even anonymized case studies—rooted in measurable outcomes—can generate immediate opportunities because prospects trust real results over marketing language. Rachel also emphasizes the power of automation to keep follow-up, nurturing, and onboarding consistent without overwhelming the professional. She explains how pre-call warmups, no-show follow-ups, “not now” sequences, and onboarding workflows can all run automatically while still feeling personal when handled thoughtfully. Instead of relying on memory or manual outreach, these systems create consistent touchpoints that nurture relationships until prospects are ready. She closes by offering three action steps: (1) focus only on the most impactful marketing activities; (2) actively seek out case studies and testimonials while the “win” is fresh; and (3) automate wherever possible to scale your time, maintain authenticity, and stay meaningfully connected with your audience. Hosts: Case Aiken and J. Mike Folson, with returning guest J.D. Martin. Initial Impressions and Reactions to Megamind (02:00 - 10:40) JD relates personal experience watching the movie during a back pain episode. He praises the voice cast: Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Jonah Hill, and Brad Pitt. Characters, Casting, and Voice Performances (10:40 - 21:04) Discussion of the main characters and voice actors: Will Ferrell as Megamind praised for his comedic timing. Tina Fey as Roxanne Ritchi, the strong Lois Lane archetype. Music and Soundtrack (21:04 - 26:00) Soundtrack by Hans Zimmer and Lauren Balfe well received for blending classic superhero score with many rock needle drops. Noted needle drops include 'Highway to Hell,' 'Back in Black,' 'Crazy Train,' and 'Bad to the Bone.' Supporting Characters and Humor (26:00 - 31:27) Minion, Megamind's pet, is highlighted as a great comic sidekick balancing Krypto and Otis-type roles. The film's dense joke rate is praised in comparison to sitcom qualities. Plot and Story Structure Evaluation (31:27 - 41:28) Discussion appreciates that the Superman analog Metro Man faking his death and quitting is a strong story beat. Titan's rise and subsequent villainy highlighted as key to forcing Megamind into the hero role. ️ Final Narrative and Thematic Elements (41:28 - 51:29) The endgame where Megamind takes on the identity of the hero (Metro Man) using disguises is highlighted. Love story between Megamind and Roxanne praised as a slow burn and effective emotional core. Cultural and Industry Context (51:29 - 58:56) Megamind's release context: 2010, alongside Iron Man 2, Toy Story 3, and before MCU dominance. Positioned as a parody, deconstruction, and love letter to superhero genre before the MCU explosion. Closing Remarks and Tribute (58:56 - 01:07:01) Recognition of Patreon supporters and invitation to join. Tribute to actor Terence Stamp (General Zod in Superman films) who passed away on recording day. Key Takeaways Megamind is a well-crafted superhero parody (06:32 - 30:00) Inverts the traditional Superman archetype by showing a villain becoming a hero. Strong voice cast (10:40 - 18:00) Notable performances, especially Will Ferrell as Megamind and Tina Fey as Roxanne Ritchi. Jonah Hill's character adds a darker twist on typical sidekick tropes. Numerous classic rock needle drops (22:30 - 23:00) A hallmark of DreamWorks animated movies aimed at older kids and adults. ️ Fight sequences and choreography (26:58 - 27:30) Surprisingly well-executed and impactful, elevating the animated action to near live-action standards. Tight story structure (31:27 - 34:00) Well-paced with a high joke-per-minute ratio making it enjoyable for multiple viewings. ️ Megamind's character arc (41:28 - 51:29) From villain to hero effectively supported by strong thematic elements, including friendship, identity, and redemption. Movie fits well in the 2010 superhero context (51:29 - 58:56) Before the MCU boom, making it a timely and insightful satire and love letter to superhero media. Legacy and community engagement (58:56 - 01:07:01) Tribute to Terence Stamp and encouragement for listeners to join broader fandoms through podcasts and social media.

Frank is joined by Phil to break down Peacock's Twisted Metal, from its surprisingly heartfelt character work to the tournament arc and deep cuts that longtime players will recognize. We talk John Doe's search for identity, the show's “happy sociopath” version of Sweet Tooth, how Season 2 levels up the stunts and car combat, and why adding new lore can actually respect the games. If you skipped this one because “cars with guns,” we make the case for why it's worth your time. Timestamps and Topics 00:00 Introductions and why Twisted Metal was the pick for this episode. 00:36 What the show adapts from the games and where it departs, especially with John Doe. 02:11 The core premise: post apocalyptic courier job, a shot at life behind the walls, and the road to San Francisco. 03:29 Game lore 101: Calypso, wishes with a twist, and character specific endings. 07:00 Sweet Tooth as chaos engine, why the Joker style wildcard works on TV. 09:05 Samoa Joe in the suit, Will Arnett on the mic, and why the voice swap lands. 10:58 Axel and other fan favorites enter, with connected backstories that actually pay off. 13:42 Game venues reimagined with in world logic, HUDs and objectives that make sense. 18:48 Car combat talk: practical vs CG, why Season 2's action feels better. 21:07 “Silly” weapons that get smart uses and Chekhov's missile moments. 23:03 Budget glow up from Season 1 to Season 2 and early success on Peacock. 24:04 John and Quiet's chemistry, then the Season 2 relationship reset. 28:05 The sister storyline, tough choices, and consequences after the wish. 30:40 Minion reworked, identity twists, and a setup that begs for Season 3. 33:40 Adaptation philosophy: build new stories that feel like the game. 41:31 What other game adaptations can learn from Twisted Metal. 45:06 Fun facts: ratings, production notes, and stunt work. Key Takeaways Twisted Metal balances weekly mayhem with character arcs, making the world feel lived in instead of gimmicky. Sweet Tooth is written as a charmingly off kilter sociopath, and the Samoa Joe and Will Arnett combo sells the menace and the laughs. Season 2 embraces the tournament and deepens game lore while explaining gamey elements inside the story. Practical stunts plus targeted CG keep the car combat crunchy and readable. Smart departures from canon create stronger relationships without losing the game's tone. Quotes “It's a show about a character trying to find his worth in a post apocalyptic world.” “Sweet Tooth is a happy sociopath. It's off putting and I love him for it.” “They nailed the cross between practical and CG. On this day in Tudor history, 23 September 1568, a tense “harbour truce” at San Juan de Ulúa (Veracruz) exploded into close-quarters battle. Spanish warships surged in; cannon roared; John Hawkins and his young kinsman Francis Drake barely escaped with the Minion and Judith as the flagship Jesus of Lübeck was wrecked. Many English sailors were captured, some facing the Inquisition. I'm Claire Ridgway. In this episode, I unpack the ambush that hardened English attitudes, reshaped the navy, and helped set the course toward the Spanish Armada, including the uncomfortable truth that Hawkins's ventures were tied to the transatlantic slave trade, central to both profit and Spanish fury. What you'll learn: Why Hawkins sought shelter at San Juan de Ulúa, and the “safe-conduct” deal that failed The battle itself: ship list, tactics, and how Drake cut free Two empires, two narratives: “treachery” vs “piracy” Long consequences: Hawkins's navy reforms and the rise of race-built galleons How Ulúa forged the mindset behind later Elizabethan raids and 1588 If this “On This Day” deep dive gripped you, please like, subscribe, and tell me in the comments: Treachery or piracy, how do you read Ulúa? #OnThisDay #TudorHistory #SanJuanDeUlua #JohnHawkins #FrancisDrake #SpanishArmada #NavalHistory #EarlyEmpire
I was traveling this week, so today is mostly sharing a podcast with Pedro Lopez, who created the remarkable series Gloria on Netflix. Regarding investments, I want to share a brief follow-up on last week's post about the impact of AI on labor. A fun fact: there are over 6 million jobs in the US tied to driving a vehicle of some sort, making up 5% of the workforce. While regulations and unions discourage this, many of these jobs could be replaced today by a computer, which would be both safer and cheaper. The consensus is that AI will only slowly impact the labor force. I suspect this is wrong and it will only become obvious after it has happened. A possible straw in the wind is that youth unemployment is higher in the US and China, the two countries at the forefront of AI application. I show both charts below.Source: Haver.I know anecdotally from college-age kids and their parents that it is hard to find work. This is certainly true in the US, Canada, and China. AI is particularly good at entry-level work. This is less evident in Europe, and it stands to reason that Europe's labor laws might make it harder to gut the IT department, creating a delayed effect and staving off the inevitable. Regarding the podcast, in addition to AI, we are living through a period of media creative destruction. The internet gave birth to Netflix and signaled the decline of the major television networks and film studios. Pedro created a story about another media revolution—Radio Free Europe in Portugal in 1968. The story takes place during the height of the Cold War and Portugal's own dictatorship and is full of fascinating contradictions. When I grew up in the 1970s, the odds of me consuming Pedro's art were close to zero. Now I don't know what airs on television but pass along good Netflix shows like precious currency in a new bazar. Encounters with non-human entities are never what they seem. They range from euphoric to downright terrifying, yet how can one determine the nature of such beings when they never seem to show their true form? In this episode, we discuss the experiences of a man who was seemingly targeted by demonic forces that rapidly engulfed him and invaded his home before he decided to fight back. We explore his battles with dark creatures and compare his story to those of other low-level entities hell-bent on messing with humanity. Then, for our Plus+ members, we continue the theme by considering cases of "The Dark Man." Is he an archetype of excitement and renewal, or is he a consumer of human lifeforce?
