This just in! Hot off the press, its Gabe Cook, Martyn Goodwin-Sharman, Grant Hutchison and Producer Scott, with the current news, absolutely up to date.First off, Gabe brings us back to the UK election results, at the beginning of July, which brings the guys nicely onto a deep, insightful study of everyone's favourite subject, TAX. Martyn brags about running, and videos from the wonderful Lally Macbeth at The Folk Archive. And more breaking news on this cider podcast, as Grant brings the guys together to congratulate Albert Johnson on the birth of his first child. And finally, Producer Scott is preparing for a hike and has to go on a quest beforehand…Even more breaking news in this episode, is the Bristol Cider Salon, as Gabe becomes the roving reporter for the show, with interviews aplenty from the UK's premiere fine cider event. And then it's onto the interview! The guys say Croeso i ddangos to Sam Robinson and Steffan Smith of Seidir Tydecho! This duo have combined passion for Welsh culture, language and storytelling with a desire to celebrate the produce of the land that surrounds them in the beauty of mid-Wales. The guys chat everything, from Troggy's conservatory to honey trails, bothering sheep, second second homes and a certain company killing children. Whilst breaking the news in, the guys drink the brand new C'lanme 2022, which is available now! Finally, wrapping things up is a game from Martyn, which we're sure we've already played, but doesn't make it any less new and current! And with that, the hotel closes for another week. Ryan Williams, Chris O'Keefe and Dani Judith are three members of Rainbow City Park. Their love of music and exuberance of life shines in their musical output. It truly was a pleasure to get to know them. Here's the band's story from its website: "Rainbow City Park is an indie alt-rock/dream pop band from Northern California. The band draws inspiration from 90's alt-rock acts such as Third Eye Blind and The Smashing Pumpkins, infusing their music with a modern twist akin to the sounds of Boygenius and Snail Mail. Band members reside in both San Francisco and the Central Valley, converging in Sacramento for rehearsals. "Sonically, Rainbow City Park takes you on a journey through various soundscapes, from dance-inducing rhythmic sections to heavy breakdowns, to ethereal interludes where shimmering guitars blend seamlessly with the vocals. The lyrical content often delves into existential and melancholic themes, offering a stark contrast to the buoyant musical atmosphere. This juxtaposition finds its resonance with artists they admire, such as Phoebe Bridgers, Frightened Rabbit, and Pinegrove. "Fronting the band is the charismatic Dani Judith, a multi-talented artist who wears the hats of an audio engineer and music teacher when she's not playing with Rainbow City Park. The trio of guitarists, including Dani herself, Nick Nassab, and Chris O'Keefe, weaves intricate melodies that intertwine with Dani's vocals. Their signature indie-rock sound is heavily influenced by their love of Fender guitars and an array of pedals that shape their tone. The rhythm section provides the backbone of the band, with accomplished musicians Dwight Struthers on bass and Ryan Williams on drums.  "As a five-piece with Dani as lead vocalist, the band released three songs in 2023: double single 'Broken Record / Dad Jeans' in May and 'Convince You' in October." In February 2024, Rainbow City Park began supporting the release of its next single, “Valentine's Day 1999,” with a series of shows throughout California.

They also talked music and Grant's feelings about getting back into it after Frightened Rabbit ended. You see, last year Grant joined this Scottish band called The Twilight Sad as their drummer and soon after joining, they went on a massive worldwide tour opening for a little band called The Cure!!! So, it was really interesting to hear how that came about. They also talked about his ambitions to expand cider in Northern Scotland, an exciting bit of news about his legendary cider shop Aeble, and his aspirations for the future of the Neutral Cider Hotel. It was so nice hearing two longtime friends (and a wee baby) have a proper catch-up. Hutchison took his own life in May 2018, yet his legacy -- and impact -- lives on. The band's 2013 album, "Pedestrian Verse," captures the essence of what made the group so spectacular. (It was also the first offering by the band to include songwriting efforts by all of its members.) Songs like "Backyard Skulls" and "Late March, Death March" continue to tackle darker themes -- but with Hutchison's knack for cheekiness and cleverness, while "Nitrous Oxide" and "State Hospital" (among others) speak to the pervasive darkness and escapism that seemed to envelope him. "How can I talk of life and warmth?" Hutchinson sings on the final track, "The Oil Slick." He adds: "I've got a voice like a gutter in a toxic storm." That's a tad harsh, but that's how self-deprecating he was. Hutchison's voice gave hope -- and community -- to many.

“While I'm alive, I'll make tiny changes to Earth.” Written by Scott Hutchison, the late frontman of the band Frightened Rabbit, this line has provided comfort, consolation, and inspiration to those who loved Scott's music. A talented and witty lyricist, Scott's songs could be devastatingly crushing or funny, visceral or resonant—sometimes all in the same track. But an artist is more than the work they produce, and so, on this episode of Object of Sound, we're celebrating not only Scott's music, but also his life and legacy. We speak to Ben Gibbard, Frank Turner, Georgia Maq, and more, who share memories and impressions of the way Scott and his music shaped their lives. We'll also hear from listeners who called into the Object of Sound hotline to talk about what Scott's music means to them, and all the changes—both tiny and profound—that he has made to the lives of his listeners. Closing the episode, Hanif walks us through a playlist of some of his top Scott Hutchison songs. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of singer-songwriters who don't sound much alike, but who've traveled similar paths and have similar outlooks on life—oh, and who did a duet earlier this year—Frank Turner and KT Tunstall. Turner is a sort of folk-punk troubadour who's built an incredible catalog and following over the past couple of decades from his home base in England. Like his hero Tim Barry of Avail or even Billy Bragg before him, Turner infuses truly catchy songs with a punk spirit, and he's made a career buoyed by the fact that he never stops moving: He's always on tour—including a recent “50 States in 50 Days” run—and always making new music. Not even the pandemic could stop him, though obviously it slowed down the live performance. During lockdown, Turner recorded his ninth album, a sort of back-to-basics affair called FTHC, which of course stands for Frank Turner Hardcore. Check out “A Wave Across a Bay” from that album, which was written as a tribute to Turner's late friend, Scott Hutchison of Frightened Rabbit. Also on that album is a song called “Little Life,” which Turner decided after the fact that he'd like to invite someone else to sing on. Scottish singer-songwriter KT Tunstall perhaps wasn't the most obvious choice, but then again, neither of these folks ever seems to make the obvious choice—and that's definitely to their credit. Tunstall's career, which stretches back to indie bands in the early 2000s, definitely started with a more mainstream-leaning trajectory, with BRIT awards and a Grammy nomination, even. But like Turner, Tunstall has a restless spirit, and some big life events not too long ago led her to sell everything she owns, move to Los Angeles, and dive into the world of musicals—where she has also, unsurprisingly, found success. And just last month, she released the final chapter in a trilogy of albums that were meant to convey the themes of “soul, body, and mind.” This one, called Nut—that'd be your mind—is great. Check out “Private Eyes” from that album right here. Turner and Tunstall have a really fun chat here, covering everything from The Clash and Bruce Springsteen to the weirdness of recording a song before you've ever played it live. The talk about the touring life a lot, and how that tribe of people have plenty in common, even when it seems like they don't. They come up with a slogan for Tunstall's career, and get into the reality of using a tour bus bathroom. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to KT Tunstall and Frank Turner for chatting. This week's guest is Michael Pedersen, whose new book Boy Friends is a profoundly personal, searingly honest examination of grief, inspired by the death of Scott Hutchison, the author's dearest friend, and artistic co-conspirator Although heartbreaking at moments, Boy Friends is by no means a depressing book. In fact it's funny, and tender, and insightful, as well as an authentic and touching quest to give voice to the maelstrom of emotions such a devastating loss provokes. It's also an examination of male friendship, and the difficulties many of us have expressing the love that underpins them, having been brought up in societies that minimise or mock such emotions.*SUBSCRIBE NOW FOR BONUS EPISODESLooking for Friends of Shakespeare and Company read Ulysses? https://podfollow.com/sandcoulyssesIf you want to spend even more time at Shakespeare and Company, you can now subscribe for regular bonus episodes and early access to Friends of Shakespeare and Company read Ulysses.Subscribe on Patreon here: https://www.patreon.com/sandcoSubscribe on Apple Podcasts here: https://podcasts.apple.com/fr/podcast/shakespeare-and-company-writers-books-and-paris/id1040121937?l=enAll money raised goes to supporting “Friends of Shakespeare and Company” the bookshop's non-profit, created to fund our noncommercial activities—from the upstairs reading library, to the writers-in-residence program, to our charitable collaborations, and our free events.*Michael Pedersen is a prize-winning Scottish poet and author. This week, we speak to Leo Abrahams. Leo is a musician, composer and producer. Although classically trained, he left behind a degree in composition at the royal academy to play guitar for Imogen Heap, and later, Ed Harcourt as part of their touring bands. A chance encounter with production legend Brian Eno led to him assisting on a variety of projects, often helping to ‘finish' the myriad of releases Brian would be working across. This led to him taking on more production roles and Leo has since built a fascinating C.V. that includes Frightened Rabbit, Wild Beasts, Katie Melua and Paolo Nutini. From his newly completed studio in east London he now divides his time between film and TV composition, session guitar work, solo albums, and of course, his production work. And it's here we joined him to hear the story of his new studio, his serendipitous meeting with Mr Eno and what it's like touring Siberia with a coach full of free jazz musicians… The Process of Production is presented by Lawrence Diamond and Bob Matthews. Lawrence cut his teeth playing and writing in Indie bands before finding international success and touring the world with his band CITIZENS! During that time he worked with a host of revered producers including Liam Howe, Mark Ralph and Alex Kapranos. Since the band ended in 2016 he's been using that experience to help other artists develop their careers as a writer and producer while continuing to release his own music under various different guises. Bob learned his trade as the producer and multi-instrumentalist in Electronic Pop duo Alpines, whose career spans 3 albums, releases on major and indie record labels, shows with Florence + The Machine, The xx, Emeli Sandé, and a top 20 hit 'Tidal Wave' in collaboration with Sub Focus. In recent years he has turned his focus to producing other acts and has a studio in Chiswick in West London. The guys welcome the co-founder of one of the UK's most name-checked cider makers, whose ciders have graced this podcast on more than one occasion.  Having achieved local infamy in Bristol with their small field to fork restaurant called Birch, our guest and his wife ditched the kitchen for the orchard to focus on creating ciders exuding grace and skill and with a focus on the landscape they came from.  Checking into the hotel today is Mr. Sam Leach from Wilding Cider! The guys chat everything including the first horse of knowledge of the year, orcharding practices, new techniques, Russian Oligarchs in wine, the disappearance of Clive and everything in-between those long arms! Then, it's onto the first listener question of the year and this would have been perfect for Grant  as he's a fan of a certain band. Iain from the Pittsburgh Penguins calls in with a little question. And with that, the hotel closes for the month, so please do check out the socials, and send us your DMs, social posts and Speakpipe messages to have your say in where the guys go, what happens in the future, and just let us know how you're doing! I don't think it's too annoying and hopefully you won't either.
