Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking! Why do you like the music you do? Is it as simple as “It's what I heard on the radio”? Or something deeper? People with elder siblings may be exposed to music earlier than first children. Jeff had an older brother, so was exposed earlier to cool music - Beatles, Janis, Hendrix, and so on. Mick was the eldest in his family and had to find his own taste. (No surprise considering what he listens to!) Were you bullied as a child? Influence! Did you share music with your friends? Influence! Did you have access to a good radio station? Or print media? Influence!! We talk about our early influences – musical & otherwise – and look at how they played a role in what we listen to today. In Rock News, Ringo has released a country album, and Toto is touring. Oh well, shouldn't take them long to play their 3 hits. You know Jeff's obsessed with AI, so he asked three AI brands to nominate the greatest albums of 1971. Not much variation, really. One day, we may ask them to understand quality, rather than sales figures, and see what they give us. Our Album You Must Listen to Before you Die is “Blue” by Joni Mitchell - an top grade album that deserves to be here. Mick references Atlantic Records' sampler called “Very Together” which featured “Carey” from this album, and pointed out a link between Joni Mitchell and Scottish hard rock band, Nazareth. How did YOUR tastes develop? Drop us a line & let us know. Enjoy! Another Green World by Brian Eno, released in 1975, is a groundbreaking album that blends ambient soundscapes with more traditional song structures, marking a pivotal moment in Eno's transition from rock music to the ambient genre he would later help define. The album is a rich tapestry of atmospheric instrumentals and lyrical tracks, using a wide array of instruments and sounds to evoke a dreamlike, otherworldly quality. With contributions from notable musicians like Robert Fripp and Phil Collins, Another Green World is both innovative and deeply influential, offering a delicate balance between experimental art and accessible beauty.Listen to the album on SpotifyListen to the album on Apple MusicWhat did you think of this album? Its driving beat, or pulse, as Reich calls it, makes it a toe-tapper. This recording, on the ECM label in 1978, is the first recording by Steve Reich and Musicians. There have been many recordings since then by Reich and by other ensembles. John Cage: Sonatas and Interludes for Prepared Piano You can't talk about 20th-century classical music without mentioning John Cage. His music, mostly created using chance operations, was revolutionary. The pieces on this recording were composed between 1946 and 1948, before Cage adopted his Yi Jing influenced compositional approach. The revolution here is the "prepared" piano, in which screws and bolts, pieces of plastic and rubber were wedged between the piano strings, turning into a percussion ensemble. Morton Feldman: Piano and String Quartet Morton Feldman was a close friend of John Cage, but his music was very different. Many of his pieces are long - this one lasts 79 minutes - and quite. His music has slow, soft, slowly morphing phrases, and you can get lost in his sound world. Toru Takemitsu: From Me Flows What You Call Time Strongly influenced by western classical music, notably Debussy, Tour Takemitsu created unique music that doesn't fit easily in any boxes. This 1990 work is a concerto for five percussionists and orchestra, and lasts about 36 minutes. Philip Glass: Einstein on the Beach Philip Glass is one of the foundational composers of New York minimalism, and is well known for his operas and film scores. His first "opera," Einstein on the Beach, lasts about five hours, and is a summation of his various composing styles in the 1970s. This recording is from the 1984 revival at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, which I attended, and which has left its mark on me. If you like this, you may want to see the opera staged, and this Blu-Ray of a 2014 production in Paris is excellent. Olivier Messiaen: Catalogue d'Oiseaux My only atonal selection is this group of works by the French composer Olivier Messiaen. He lived in the French Alps for many years, and in this series of piano pieces, Catalogue of birds, he presents his take on songs of the different birds heard around France. Much of Messiaen's music is "difficult," but if you take the time to get into this recording, you may find it enjoyable. Arvo Pärt: Tabula Rasa Estonian composer Arvo Pärt was "discovered" in the west in 1984 when ECM released this album. The title work, from 1977, is an example of music that deconstructs, and other works on the album are also fascinating. Terry Riley: In C One of the first true minimalist works, In C "consists of 53 short numbered musical phrases, lasting from half a beat to 32 beats; each phrase may be repeated an arbitrary number of times at the discretion of each musician in the ensemble. Each musician thus has control over which phrase they play, and players are encouraged to play the phrases starting at different times, even if they are playing the same phrase." (Wikipedia) This is the first recording, from 1968, led by the composer, but it has been recorded many times since. Frederic Rzewski: The People United Will Never Be Divided This work consists of 36 variations on a Chilean protest song ¡El pueblo unido jamás será vencido! which is both highly musical and extremely difficult to perform. Timo Andres: Home Stretch Timo Andres is a young composer living in New York City. This recording is probably the most classical sounding of my selection. At its center is a "reconstruction" of an incomplete Mozart piano concerto, which is "an almost entirely new-sounding piece, which I hope will be an antidote to the studied blandness of most existing completions." This is bookended by Home Stretch, a piece "in three large sections which gradually accelerate: beginning in almost total stasis, working up to an off-kilter dance with stabbing accents, and ushering in a sturm-und-drang cadenza which riles itself up into a perpetual-motion race to the finish," and Paraphrase on Themes of Brian Eno, where Andres orchestrates some of Brian Eno's songs from Before and After Science and Another Green World. Paul Rudolph - The Deviant, The Pink Fairies, Hawkwind & Brian Eno - in conversation with David Eastaugh At the recommendation of his childhood friend Jamie Mandelkau, he relocated to London, England joining the Mick Farren led band The Deviants as a guitarist. After recording their third album and contributing to Twink's Think Pink album, the band and singer parted company during a disastrous tour of the West Coast of North America. Returning to England, the band hooked up with Twink forming The Pink Fairies, signing to Polydor and embarking upon a career centred on Ladbroke Grove, occasionally hooking up with Hawkwind for sets as Pinkwind. Recording two albums, Never Never Land and What a Bunch of Sweeties, Rudolph left immediately after the release of the second album to pursue other ventures, including a stint in Uncle Dog with Carol Grimes. He was invited by Roxy Music producer John Porter in early 1973 to participate in demo sessions for Sparks, before that band had found British musicians (Adrian Fisher, Martin Gordonand Dinky Diamond) for their UK re-launch. It was at the final Uncle Dog gig that he met former Roxy Music musician Brian Eno which would lead to him contributing to four of his albums in between 1973 and 1977, namely Here Come the Warm Jets, Another Green World, Music for Films and Before and After Science. At the same time he became the main musical interpreter for Hawkwind collaborator Robert Calvert, to which Eno also became involved, recording the concept albums Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters and Lucky Leif and the Longships.

Jessica Camille Aguirre joins web editor Violet Lucca to discuss “Another Green World,” her piece in the February issue that explores a new experiment inside the infamous Biosphere 2 facility near Tucson, Arizona. Together, they discuss the relationship between climate change, the desire to travel in space, and a failure to confront the lingering colonialist tendency to control and exploit earth's natural resources until they are exhausted. Does the impetus to find another home for humanity betray a discomfort with our ecological interdependence? Is it an attempt to absolve ourselves for harming the planet when there's still time to make it livable again? Issues around science and climate reporting are also discussed. Read Aguirre's essay: https://harpers.org/archive/2022/02/biosphere-2-ecosystem-space-exploration-another-green-world This episode was produced by Violet Lucca and Andrew Blevins.

Episode DetailsEamon O'Flynn is joined by Nathan Smith and Sonya Walton to discuss Here Come the Warm Jets, the interesting debut solo album from Brian Eno. He is best known for his pioneering work in ambient music and contributions to rock, pop and electronica. Despite considering himself to be a “non-musician,” Eno is considered one of popular musics most influential and innovative figures thanks to his unique conceptual approach to contemporary music and experimental recording techniques. A member of the band Roxy Music before going solo, Eno has also made a name as a producer, having worked with Talking Heads, Devo, U2 and Coldplay. He has two albums on the Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums list, including Here Come the Warm Jets and Another Green World. What is Here Come the Warm Jets? Here Come the Warm Jets is Brian Eno's debut solo album. Released in 1974, it was his first project after leaving the band Roxy Music. Blending glam and pop stylings with avant-garde approaches, the album features sixteen guest musicians who Eno mixed and matched to encourage musical incompatibility. The album was released to mostly positive reviews and was primarily praised for its experimentation.
As an inexperienced songwriter I've been told once, instrumentals can be boring. But that certainly doesn't apply to the artistry of what these next two subjects are. Mac Blackout is, in my humble opinion, a master visual and sonic artist. His latest album, Love Profess, is the basis of my statement. It's a completely instrumental emotional rollercoaster, filled with positivity and good will while created in a time of psychic turmoil. It was a pleasure to have this opportunity to break into the mind of a truly great artist about just one small slice of inspirational fodder, Brian Eno's ambient transformation, Another Green World. We go deep into Mac's history, making of his latest record, where Another Green World sits in the making of Love Profess and what's to come next, including LOCUST! Listen and find out. Brian Colantuno (our old friend from Trackside) picked this record for Episode 4, and I'm so glad he did because it was inevitable that Eno had to be featured on an episode of Three on the Ones and Twos. Brian Eno is one of my favorites - he makes these fascinating and beautiful albums without any ego or pretentiousness. He is constantly collaborating with others (often using the Oblique Strategies that he introduced on this album) and everyoneplaying seem like they are having so much fun making these records. I also like how Brian Colantuno specifically picked this record “Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy)”. It's not the typical pick of “Here Come the Warm Jets”, “Another Green World”, or “Music for Airports” from his catalog, but a record that definitely has lots of great details and amazing songs to discuss. I hope you enjoy the episode, and thanks Brian Colantuno and Trackside for the selection!Listen to Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy) by Brian Eno
... and now dear listener, we have arrived in our present. Recorded in the Spring of 2020, this is the first of our quarantine episodes. Do bear with us as we learned how to interact remotely... With that out of the way: Painter of soundscapes and captain of our hearts, Brian Eno, begins his transition from glam rocker to ambient composer. Using the oblique strategies cards and assembling a who's who of instrumentalists, Eno produced a landmark album that's influence is still being felt 45 years hence. Let's talk Brian Eno, Another Green World!
Welcome to episode 1 of “Quarantunes”! Where quarantine can’t stop our creativity! For our first episode, we experience musical expression from Cultural Education Center for the Arts (CECA) and album artwork from Achieving Results Together (ART Center) 0:45 “Mountain Song” was composed in a songwriting and music technology class. Choices were made about what instruments would be used, and artists had their own instruments sampled via zoom, which included a shaker and a cup! The songs that are being written in this class have been thematically tied into a "Crafting Comics" class. In the story being written in that class, two young settlers have lost their deer and are looking for it in the mountains - this song is a musical interpretation of the beginning of their journey. You can find the lyrics below! Happily, we go up Shyly we walk along Cold nights are so mean Snow Looks so beautiful Life is at the bottom Our goal is at the top Home is where the video games are Rocky Mountains are so pretty Bears are so scary Pigeons Coo in the air Ravens Fly through the sky I see a horse in a house How Strange! Crows don’t go near that house We brought extra Apples We’ve also got Bananas 2:39 “Wrestling Intro Song” was put together recording different instruments from each artist's home, including a shaker, keyboard, guitar, and tambourine. The artists chose both the key and tempo while the instructor provided different instrument lines to be chosen from. 3:55 “Another Green Sunflower” was constructed to demonstrate the sampling ability of the Ableton program. In it, the Beach Boys song "All I Wanna Do" and the Brian Eno Song "Another Green World" are put together to make a laid-back hip-hop beat. You can find a YouTube video on our channel to see how Daniel created this! 6:10 “Horse Song” This is another song from the CECA songwriting collaboration with the crafting comic class! In the story, two main characters come across a horse that lives in a house. They want to spend the night with the horse, but the horse never turns their music down! All musical choices were made by students. There's even a shaker and hand clapping that was sampled over zoom! You can find the lyrics below! I’m the best horse, I stay hydrated I like to run with the herd I gobble up Chile and mangos with lime I think my rest is super important I like to sleep with music on My best friend is a really cool cow They are super friendly This is my cool new house I built You can stay at the house But I’ll never turn my music down 7:48 “Corona Sounds” was made by sampling different household objects in place of traditional percussion. In the song, one can hear the sounds of squiring hand sanitizer, a can of disinfectant wipes, an empty roll of toilet paper, and some canned goods. These sounds work together to make up the backbone of the groove that the song is based around. You can see how instructor Daniel created some of these tracks, and get inspired to create your own recordings using everyday items you can find in your home! Music writing has always been something of an occult practice, trying by some weird alchemy to use concepts to describe stuff that defies the basic categories of intellect. So long as we stick to classical music, we can pretend that nothing too odd is happening, since the classical tradition has been steeped in notation for centuries. But when a musicologist attempts to analyze, say, an ambient track by Brian Eno, things aren't so simple. Suddenly notation won't do, and there comes the need to make use of every tool in the poet's shed. This episode focuses on a recently published article by Phil on this question. In due course, the discussion turns to the power of good writing: its capacity not just to convey an author's subjective impressions, but to disclose new facets of the ineffable, baroque objective world. New Year, Same Lads! The Lads return from holiday break to talk a bunch of nonsense into your earholes! First up, we talk about the news, as the 116th Congress officially convened for the first time in the midst of a grueling federal shutdown. Then it’s on to go back to the work of Victor Sjolstrom with his landmark silent horror-drama, The Phantom Carriage! The Lads chat about its now-alien seeming morality, it’s incredible practical effects, and Frank rants about how shitty CGI looks in contrast. Then the lads chat about Brian Eno’s ambient masterpiece Another Green World, and talk about the transformative effect it had on Eno’s career and their own lives. Last it’s on to Frasier S1E13 Guess Who’s Coming To Breakfast, where Martin fucks a neighbor, Frasier is smarmy, and Niles is once again a creep! Frank is sick! Justin screams in despair! Tom wants to learn Swedish! Good times!Follow the LadsInstagram @plaidladspodTwitter @plaidladspodThe Plaid Lads Ever Expanding Spotify Playlist
