Starring Oscar Isaac and directed by Joel & Ethan Coen, Inside Llewyn Davis was released December 6, 2013. We've recently lost one of the great directors over the last few decades in David Lynch who was known for showing the dreamy and nightmarish side of America (and we need you now, David). The other great tellers of American stories over the same period have been Joel and Ethan Coen. They have protagonists who start out in precarious positions in life....then things go downhill. Welcome to episode 124 of See Hear Podcast. There's definitely a rhythm to the Coen Brothers' films....even if their films are not ABOUT music or musicians, they feel musical (and having Carter Burwell score many of their films doesn't hurt in that regard). Two films, however, stick out as music films in their catalogue – O Brother, Where Art Thou and Inside Llewyn Davis – it's the latter that is the focus of this episode. Sadly, neither Kerry nor Tim were available to record this show, but I welcome back film professor, author, and fellow podcaster Neil Fox back to the show. He selected Inside Llewyn Davis for our discussion, and I couldn't have been happier to revisit this 2013 film that has seemingly divided people on its merits (spoiler alert – we both love it). The film starts off in Greenwich Village in 1961, and is about a few days in the life of folk musician Llewyn Davis (Oscar Isaac) as he moves from couch to couch, gig to gig, kindness to kindness....and he responds poorly despite being the recipient of others' good nature towards him. Is he an awful human being, or is he lashing out due to a terrible event regarding a former musical partner? Neil and I had a great conversation about this film and a variety of related issues. Since the film is Bob Dylan adjacent, we had to bring in our thoughts about the recently released Dylan biopic focusing on his early years, A Complete Unknown and see how its tone contrasts with the Coens outlook. I am grateful for Neil giving over his time to chat with me. He brings a perspective I was fascinated to hear. Send us a textWelcome back to another blockbuster episode of Fabulous Film & Friends, our 95th to be precise, and I do apologize for the delay in production. But kids, I'm a working man and if you want a more reliable and steady stream of FFF episodes, be sure to like and subscribe to the channel on Youtube or Buzzsprout, et al. And by all means tell your friends about us! So! This week! We're going to make up for lost time and come out swinging to face not one but two of Joel and Ethan Coen's finest features in their impressively long and ever changing catalog of top hits: 2007's No Country for Old Men starring Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Kelly MacDonald, Garret Dillahunt, Tess Harper, Stephen Root and Woody Harrelson and 2013's Inside Llewyn Davis starring Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, Justin Timberlake, Garrett Hedlund, Adam Driver, Max Casella, Stark Sands, F. Murray Abraham and John Goodman. I'm your host Gino Caputi and this week I have 80% of my team of the regulars back, starting with outdoorsman and frontier type from Salt Lake City Utah, no stranger to captive bolt stunners he, the one and only Burton Brown! Then there's my book smart kid sister Roseanne Caputi who has read all of Cormac McCarthy's novels 10x each, Texas Hypnotherapist and professional coin flipper Joe Field and the man whose peak years were spent sporting his signature Anton Chigurh Prince Valiant hairdo and black denim jacket, Gordon Alex Robertson! Before we cross into a never-ending circle of physical pain, broken-hearts and dashed dreams, the synopses: In No Country for Old Men the paths of Texas Sheriff Ed Tom Bell, a mysterious hitman named Anton Chigurh, and Vietnam veteran Llewellyn Moss collide when Moss stumbles upon $2 million at the site of a drug deal gone wrong. When Moss decides to keep the money, he finds himself in the crosshairs of the ruthless and relentless Chigurh, while Sheriff Bell struggles to keep up in a world spiraling beyond his control and comprehension. Inside Llewyn Davis chronicles a tumultuous but typical week in the life of its eponymous hero, an acerbic struggling folk singer in 1960s Greenwich Village. As Llewyn Davis ambles from gig to gig and friend's couch to friend's couch during a harsh New York winter, with a quick spirit-crushing sojourn to Chicago, he is faced with an unshakable truth that talent and artistic integrity may not be enough to break into an unforgiving music scene.Follow the FFF Facebook page!https://www.facebook.com/groups/fabulousfilmandfriends Like and subscribe on Youtube
Tracy and Jason are back with the lucky 13th season of Faith in Focus, where we're looking at movies that seem way outside the general vibe of their director (or do they?). This episode we consider the Brothers' Coen, and their Inside Llewyn Davis (2013), and, as always, ask the question: why should people of faith watch this?
This week, our Coen brothers marathon continues as we welcome new friend of the show Max Dominguez to discuss Inside Llewyn Davis. While not the Coen brothers' biggest financial success nor a Best Picture winner, Inside Llewyn Davis has lived on as one of the most critically praised films of the 2010s. Both hosts and guest are returning to this film. Scott and Max are big fans, but is Christian due for a hot take? Listen along to find out. What's your favorite Coen bros. movie? You might know the very funny Helen Hong from TV's Silicon Valley, the film Inside Llewyn Davis, NPR's Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, or Maximum Fun's quiz podcast Go Fact Yourself. If you live in South Central L.A., you might know her as the lady with four chickens in her backyard and a really disappointing crop of snap peas. Helen tells us all about her chickens Fifi, Coco, Athena, and Ditsy, including how she came to acquire them, why she chose to do so, and how many eggs they yield on an average day. We also discuss Mike the Headless Chicken, a bird who found a head to be unnecessary in the 1940s and who, when attempting to crow, simply gurgled.Hey Sleepy Heads, is there anyone whose voice you'd like to drift off to, or do you have suggestions on things we could do to aid your slumber? Welcome to the Munsons at the Movies podcast. Each episode we delve into the filmography of a randomly selected actor. In this episode, we explore the life and career of Adam Driver. Best known for his roles as Kylo Ren in the Star Wars trilogy, Charlie in Marriage Story (2019), and Flip in BlacKkKlansman (2018), Driver has built an impressive career in a short time. Joined for episode 100 by five-time guest, Matti Groll, we discuss Driver's impressive military background, the reasons why he has the highest average critic rating of any actor we've covered, explore why Inside Llewyn Davis forced him not to watch his own performances, and marvel at his excellence in dramatic roles. How does he rank on the Munson Meter? Listen to find out.
Filmmaker, actor, TV writer, and film critic Siddhant Adlakha was in a moment of transition in 2013, and vowed to see as many new movies as possible for the sake of career clarity. He walks us through some of those discoveries, from the spectacle of “Ram-Leela” to the melancholy of “Inside Llewyn Davis” to the intimacy of “Short Term 12.” Become a member for Bonus Episodes, personal stories of working in the industry, and yes - EVEN MORE MOVIES. https://plus.acast.com/s/a-very-good-year. Stabil Elite präsentiert: DAS ERSTE OMEN, dem es gelingt zu überraschen. Plus: BACK TO BLACK, dem nicht so viel gelingt. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The gang Loses the Gorefein's cat this week as they spend 2 weeks with Oscar Isaac as a wistful grieving folk singer in the Coen Brother's most underrated movie, Inside Llewyn Davis (2013). Set in Greenwich Village in the early 1960's, this sorrowful week(s) in the life story is subtly one of the more beautifully shot modern films, while also being full of dynamite performances, well-drawn characters, and a soundtrack to die for. Justin Timberlake is an American singer, songwriter, actor, and producer who first rose to fame as one of the lead singers for the legendary pop group *NSYNC before establishing himself as a top-tier solo artist and versatile entertainer. With his smooth vocals, slick dance moves, and dynamic stage presence, Timberlake has become one of pop music's most prolific artists and entertainers over the past two decades. Early Life and *NSYNC Justin Randall Timberlake was born in Memphis, Tennessee on January 31, 1981 to Lynn and Randall Timberlake. He was raised as a Baptist and performed often as a child, showcasing his singing talents at local talent shows and in his church choir. When Timberlake was 11, he made an appearance on the talent competition Star Search, performing country music songs. In 1993, Timberlake was recruited to join the new pop group *NSYNC along with members JC Chasez, Chris Kirkpatrick, Joey Fatone, and Lance Bass. The group shot to stardom in the late 1990s during the boy band craze, selling over 56 million records worldwide thanks largely to Timberlake's vocals and stage presence. As the group's popularity skyrocketed, Timberlake's fame expanded beyond music thanks to appearances on shows like Nickelodeon and work as a model. Solo Career – Justified In 2002, Timberlake shocked the music world by announcing he was leaving *NSYNC to pursue a solo music career. Skepticism quickly turned to praise when Timberlake released his debut solo album Justified in November 2002. Fueled by hit singles like “Cry Me a River” and “Rock Your Body,” Justified sold over 7 million copies while showcasing Timberlake's talents as a songwriter, producer, and arranger. At the Grammys, Timberlake was nominated for Album of the Year and cemented his status as pop music's newest superstar. Continued Music Success in the 2000s On the heels of Justified, Timberlake continued achieving massive success across music, film and business in the 2000s decade. His 2006 album FutureSex/LoveSounds debuted at #1 on the Billboard charts and contained hit singles like “SexyBack”, “My Love”, and “What Goes Around...Comes Around.” For his dynamic live performances during the FutureSex/LoveSounds tour, Timberlake won two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Music Direction and Technical Direction. Expanding into movies, Timberlake received praise for supporting roles in films like Alpha Dog, Black Snake Moan, and The Social Network. He also began several business ventures, launching clothing lines, co-owning restaurants, golf courses, and eventually investing in a handful of tech startups. After a musical hiatus from 2007-2012, Timberlake came back in vintage form with The 20/20 Experience (2013) and The 20/20 Experience – 2 of 2 (2013). Together, they became the best-selling albums of the year and contain hit singles like “Suit & Tie” and “Mirrors.” On the back of the 20/20 albums and Experience tour, Timberlake fully re-established himself as an unparalleled force in pop music and live performing. Continued Acting, Super Bowl, Man of the Woods Embracing acting roles with equal passion as his music, Timberlake showcased both his comedic and dramatic talents in films ranging from Friends with Benefits (2011), Trouble with Curve (2012), Inside Llewyn Davis (2013) and Runner Runner (2013). In early 2018, Timberlake headlined the Super Bowl LII halftime show, marking his triumphant return to the stage of pop music's biggest spectacle 14 years after his controversial performance alongside Janet Jackson. The show featured Timberlake flawlessly singing and dancing through his classic catalog of hits both old and new. With the most-watched musical performance of all-time, the Super Bowl show affirmed Timberlake's status as an immortal pop icon. Later in 2018, Timberlake released his fifth studio album Man on the Woods which debuted at #1 on the Billboard charts. Though met with mixed reviews, the album nonetheless contained the hit single “Say Something” and incorporated country and roots influences. The accompanying Man of the Woods tour marked Timberlake's fifth world tour as he continued showcasing unique musical artistry and exceptional live performance abilities to audiences worldwide. Acting Successes and Super Bowl Return Throughout the late 2010s and early 2020s, Timberlake expanded his acting catalog by starring in films ranging from light-hearted comedies like Trolls (2016), to lead dramatic roles in Palmer (2021). His vocal performances in multiple Trolls movie soundtracks generated smash hits like “CAN'T STOP THE FEELING!” that firmly merged Timberlake's musical talents with his blossoming acting abilities. In early 2022, Timberlake again seized the global spotlight when he co-headlined the Super Bowl LVI halftime show alongside Mary J. Blige, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem and Kendrick Lamar. The hip-hop and R&B-centric performance marked Timberlake's third Super Bowl appearance, solidifying his unique status as a halftime show mainstay performer. Legacy With over 88 million records sold worldwide, an arm-length list of awards, dozens of smash singles, and universal acclaim for electric live performances, Justin Timberlake has firmly established himself as pop royalty over his multi-decade career. By seamlessly crossing over between music and film for two decades, Timberlake has become one of entertainment's most decorated and versatile stars. His influence across pop, R&B, hip-hop, and acting is nearly unmatched by any male entertainer of his generation. From leading the pop explosion of 1990s boy bands to dominating the charts as a renowned solo artist, Justin Timberlake has consistently reinvented himself at the cutting edge of entertainment for twenty-plus years. With his smooth voice, slick moves, unmatched stage charisma and diverse talents ranging from singing to acting, Timberlake delivers a level of popstar power matched only by luminaries like Michael Jackson and Prince. Though still actively recording music and starring in films at just 42 years old, Timberlake's vast career ensures enduring fame as one of history's preeminent entertainers. Time on Screen is back this week, and at long last features a movie by the Coen Brothers, a filmmaking team that has been incredibly important to both Zach Kazan and Kyle Snarr, Worn & Wound's Head of Partnerships and the guest on this episode. They're tackling No Country for Old Men, the Coen's 2007 classic neo-western based on the much loved Cormac McCarthy novel, and the film that many recognize as their true breakthrough, finally winning them a Best Picture Oscar and near universal acclaim. Zach and Kyle talk through what makes the movie special and how it fits into the larger context of the Coen's filmography, and they finish off the episode with their personal top five favorite Coen Brothers films. There's some overlap between their lists, but it still captures the enormous breadth and variety in their films over the years. To stay on top of all new episodes, you can subscribe to The Worn & Wound Podcast — now available on all major platforms including iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, Soundcloud, Spotify, and more. Comedian and writer Josh Gondelman is a pep-talk enthusiast and famously upbeat guy, with a solid career and a happy home life. Not one of these traits does he share with Llewyn Davis (Oscar Isaac), from the Coen Brothers' 2013 film INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS. And yet, when he saw it in the theater, Josh felt so seen by Llewyn -- and not in a good way -- that he couldn't watch the movie again for a decade. Which brings us to now, when he tells us why! Then, Jordan has one quick thing about the brand new movie your dad might be texting you about.Josh's Vulture piece about SpeckleJosh's Newsletter, That's Marvelous!***With Jordan Crucchiola and Josh Gondelman

Today on the program we start things off with a reality-shattering two pages, then shoot into outer space with our guest, the brilliant production designer Alex DiGerlando. We explore film sets and designed environments that come out of left field and reshape our understanding of what it is we're watching. We also dive into Alex's approach to his own work, which he describes as “part muse, part curation.” Rounding things out we also unveil a new prismatic style: the proverbial “lightning” round. This week, I was so pleased to welcome back to the pod one of my crime writer friends' favorite crime writers & a man whose taste in film, literature, & poetry is an endless source of delight on Twitter. Adrian McKinty was born & raised in Belfast, Northern Ireland, & then studied philosophy at Oxford University before he moved to Australia & New York. He is the author of more than a dozen crime novels, including his Dagger & Edgar nominated debut DEAD I WELL MAY BE, the critically acclaimed Sean Duffy series, as well as the smash international bestseller & award-winning standalone thriller THE CHAIN.A man whose books have been translated into over thirty languages, Adrian has won the Edgar Award, the International Thriller Writers Award, the Ned Kelly Award (three times), the Anthony Award, the Barry Award, the Macavity Award, the Theakston Old Peculiar Crime Novel of the Year Award. Adrian's most recent novels include the smash bestseller THE ISLAND & the latest Sean Duffy mystery THE DETECTIVE UP LATE.After having such a delightful first conversation with Adrian about EXCALIBUR & LORD OF THE RINGS earlier in the year (& then chatting with him once again for the upcoming MIDNIGHT RUN-THROUGH pod series with Blake Howard's One Heat Minute Productions), I couldn't wait to bring him back to discuss movies with me once again. Emailing me while working on his next book, Adrian came up with an ingenious idea to look at the ways that the Coen Brothers address creative blocks in the films BARTON FINK & INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS.Witty yet highly analytical, in this episode, we check into the hotel from hell to explore the life of the mind in the 1991 film first & then take a folksy walk through early '60s Greenwich Village in search of a cat in one of the Coens' final works as a filmmaking team. The perfect companion to your holiday travels this week in the United States, it's a must for fans of the filmmakers & especially those who adore FINK, which is dissected in great detail in this entertaining conversation.Originally Posted on Patreon (11/18/23) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/93115677Theme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music ArchiveShop Watch With Jen logo Merchandise in Logo Designer Kate Gabrielle's Threadless Shop

'Inside Llewyn Davis' has become a staple in the Coen-verse, but Strangelove is not sure how to feel about the film. For this month's theme of ASSHOLES ON FILM it's important that we touch base on assholery amongst artistry. We're discussing the show's very first Coen Brother's film that we recently caught up with for the first time. We're talking the Coen's 2013 film “Inside Llewyn Davis” starring Oscar Isaac in a breakout role as a struggling folk musician in the early sixties on the cusp of the Dylan explosion. He's gonna lose your cat, he may or may not knock you up and his assholery is in good company amongst the industry he struggles to break out in. Emotionally unresolved issue don't help either. Greenwich Village is looking strange and sad.
