This is Paul Chitlik's second appearance on StoryBeat. Paul has written for all the major networks and studios in both English and Spanish. He was story editor for The New Twilight Zone, and staff writer for the Showtime sitcom, Brothers. He's directed episodes and been coordinating producer for “Real Stories of the Highway Patrol” and “U.S. Customs Classified.” He wrote and produced “Alien Abduction,” the first network movie shot on digital video for UPN. He wrote, produced, and directed “Ringling Brothers Revealed” a special for The Travel Channel, which was right up his alley because years earlier he'd been a roustabout for Circus Vargas. Paul has written features for Rysher Entertainment, NuImage, Promark, Mainline Releasing, and others. Most recently he wrote, produced and directed “The Wedding Dress,” for Amazon Prime. Paul was nominated for a Writers Guild of America award for his work on "The Twilight Zone" and a GLAAD Media Award nomination for Telemundo's "Los Beltrán.” He also won a Genesis Award for a Showtime Family movie. Paul has taught in the MFA programs at UCLA, the University of Barcelona's film school ESCAC, Cuba's film school EICTV, Chile's film school UNIACC, The University of Zulia in Venezuela, The Panamerican University in Mexico City, The Story Academy of Sweden and as a clinical associate professor at Loyola Marymount University. Paul's latest novel is Lies, All Lies. I've read Lies, All Lie, and found it to be one of the most entertaining works of fiction about behind-the-scenes Hollywood I've had the pleasure to peruse. He's also the author of one of the most indispensable, must-read books for anyone interested in writing screenplays, teleplays, plays, and even novels, called Rewrite. For the record, I was one of Paul's students during my days in graduate school at UCLA. Without question, Paul's teachings have remained exceptionally influential on me for both my own writing and in my subsequent years as a college professor of screenwriting.
They tried Gordon Kent for murder–but who was really responsible? The Sky Was Full of Ships by Theodore Sturgeon, that's next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, with at least one lost vintage sci-fi short story in every episode. We get a lot of comments on our YouTube Channel. This comes to us from HEAVYMETALmovie1981 “MORE scary werewolf stories please!!” We hear you and we have added Black Hound Of Death by Robert E. Howard to our list of stories to narrate. By the way if you know a scary werewolf vintage science fiction story, please send an email to scott@lostscifi.com. Thanks, HEAVYMETALmovie1981!! And this from rodneydangerman9616, “I've been a consistent listener for a while now...my thought (because it was requested in the video description) is that it should be one (confounding and quasi-obscure) question per week. I assume it would be easier on y'all (production team, that is) and, perhaps, it would give an ample amount of time for the audience to respond. Just my two cents. Love your work, Scott! You and Ian (from HorrorBabble) are, in my humble opinion, truly two of the best narrators on YT!!!” Thanks, rodneydangerman9616!! Ian from HorrorBabble is an amazing narrator so to be mentioned with him is a huge compliment. If you have something to say, we would love to hear it! Comment on our YouTube channel or send us an email, scott@lostscifi.com. Theodore Sturgeon was born Edward Hamilton Waldo in Staten Island, New York, in 1918. His name was legally changed to Theodore Sturgeon at age eleven after his mother's divorce and subsequent marriage. Sturgeon's 1953 science fiction novel More Than Human won the 1954 International Fantasy Award as the year's best novel, and the Science Fiction Writers of America ranked "Baby Is Three" number five among the "Greatest Science Fiction Novellas of All Time" up to 1964. Ranked by votes for all of their pre-1965 novellas, Sturgeon was second among authors, behind only Robert Heinlein. He was good and he was prolific! He wrote almost 200 short stories and the screenplays for two Star Trek episodes, and two of his stories were adapted for The New Twilight Zone. Today's story by Sturgeon was in Thrilling Wonder Stories Magazine in June 1947 and can be found on page 55, The Sky Was Full of Ships by Theodore Sturgeon… Support the show - https://www.buymeacoffee.com/scottsV Merch - https://lostscifi.creator-spring.com/ Sign up for our newsletterhttps://dashboard.mailerlite.com/forms/266431/102592606683269000/share https://twitter.com/lost_sci_fi Next Week on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, Larry Thomas bought a cuckoo clock for his wife—without knowing the price he would have to pay. Today on the show we have returning champion RB Botto. For many, the holy grail of television has become Netflix. It's a titan in the industry, and with over 200 million subscribers worldwide, no one can put out content quite like them. Just look at the recent hit show BRIDGERTON, which has already been seen by a massive 80 million households (!!) since its release. If you're a writer or creator, getting your series onto Netflix's platform can spell success in a big way. But first there's the matter of getting your series in front of them and pitching it effectively. It should be a comfort to know that you're not the only one who wants your series on Netflix. Netflix wants that too! Netflix execs are constantly on the lookout for exciting new voices and new series to fill their slate. Yet it takes more than just a good series or a good pilot script to get on Netflix's radar; you need to be able to communicate it well and pitch it in a way that will get their team excited. This certainly takes some work, but it's absolutely achievable. If you're interested in getting your show on Netflix, it's time to learn directly from the source what it will take to make that happen. In an effort to reach more writers and find more content, Netflix has joined forces with Stage 32 to present a FREE and invaluable workshop on what it is that they're looking for in new shows and how you can best pitch your series to their executives. In Stage 32's continued effort to help level the playing field for content creators worldwide, we felt it's important that we help you get tools you need to be able to make sure that you can pitch effectively.Kicking off the workshop will be Stage 32 CEO, Richard "RB" Botto (@rbwalksintoabar), and hosting this presentation will be Stage 32's Managing Director Amanda Toney with Netflix's Director of Creative Talent Investment and Development for International Originals Christopher Mack. Christopher was previously Senior Vice President of Scripted Content for Stage 13, overseeing all of the brand's original scripted series and development slates across multiple genres, including Emmy nominated Netflix series' SPECIAL and IT'S BRUNO. Before Stage 13, Chris headed the Warner Bros. Workshop, the writing and directing program for professionals looking to start and/or further their careers in television. Over a period of 10 years in this role, Chris curated a roster of close to 100 writers and 50 directors representing the breakthrough emerging voices working on high-profile television shows today. In addition to these responsibilities, Chris has covered hit shows such as TWO AND A HALF MEN and SMALLVILLE for the Current Programs department.Prior to joining Warner Bros., Chris spent seven years writing on various one-hour dramas including ER, THE PRACTICE and THE NEW TWILIGHT ZONE. After graduating from Loyola Law School, Chris got his start in television at NBC Studios as an associate and he quickly rose to becoming an executive. During his time at the newly created NBC Studios, he oversaw a varied list of shows including: THE FRESH PRINCE OF BEL AIR and IN THE HOUSE, among others. In this exclusive Stage 32 workshop, Christopher will delve into what exactly makes a television pitch work at Netflix. He'll discuss the essentials you'll need to catch Netflix's eye and will zero in on how to write an effective pitch document. He'll pose questions you be able to answer and communicate for your series and give you ideas on how best to communicate your show's overview, world, tone, and characters. Christopher will then discuss how season summaries should be built and give you ideas on how to think about and present potential episodes. Finally, you will have the invaluable opportunity to ask Christopher your own questions. You will leave this presentation with the understanding of how to structure and present your series, not in theory, but directly from the source.Enjoy my epic conversation with RB Botto.

It’s Brennan’s birthday today, so we’re celebrating with a little Wes Craven magic! Because he’s already seen every theatrical Craven film, we’re diving deep into the first episode of the 80’s Twilight Zone reboot, which Craven directed. Join us (and special guest Shannon!) as we review the segments “Shatterday” and “A Little Peace and Quiet,” argue over our GHOSTBUSTERS episode, and learn how our little Shannon is blossoming up in Seattle! Our guest today is an Emmy-Award-winning writer for television, having written for series like Wonder Woman, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, L.A. Law, The New Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits. He's a Nebula-Award-winning writer of short stories and novels, including Time and Chance, Moloka'i, Honolulu, and most recently the wistfully nostalgic novel Palisades Park. He's written some of the best Batman comic-book stories ever, including my personal favorite Batman tale of all time, “The Autobiography of Bruce Wayne,” from The Brave and the Bold #197, in which we discover how a middle-aged Batman finally learned how to be brave enough to love again. It's an issue I've returned to time and again over the years, when I need to remind myself that you can tell a lifetime's worth of story in only twenty pages. http://BlastoffComics.com

Clutter is one of the single biggest reasons projects are so hard to get made in Hollywood. Every night, studio executives drag home a pile of scripts, 99% of which will end up in the reject bin. The way you decrease your script's chances of suffering the same fate is by doing your due diligence and not sending it out until it's at its absolute best. Unfortunately, too many writers, directors, and producers aren't skilled enough to know when that is. On Monday, September 20th, Paul Chitlik, The Rewrite Mentor, and author of "Rewrite" will appear on Inside Urban Hollywood to discuss how to know when your script is ready. Paul Chitlik has written for all the major networks and studios. He was story editor for "The New Twilight Zone," and staff writer for Showtime's "Brothers." He has written features for Rysher Entertainment, NuImage, Promark, and others. He received a WGA award nomination for his work on "The Twilight Zone," a GLAAD Media Award nomination, and won a Genesis Award for a Showtime movie. He has taught screenwriting at UCLA, Loyola Marymount University, and ESCAC, the film school of the University of Barcelona. He began teaching advanced residential workshops in 2008, in Cortona, Italy, and will lead workshops in Telluride, Colorado, and Spain in 2010.Listeners are welcome to call-in to ask questions at (646) 200-3290.
