Discover the wild true story of the 1909 transcontinental auto race! Author Eric Moskowitz reveals how Henry Ford cheated to win The Hardest, Longest Race.Episode Resources:"The Hardest, Longest Race" by Eric MoskowitzUniversity of Washington's Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition CollectionHistorical Overview of the 1909 Transcontinental Automobile RaceIn 1909, a grueling transcontinental automobile race from New York to Seattle pitted an underdog car maker against a ruthless Henry Ford—and ended in one of the biggest cover-ups in automotive history. In this episode of Books and Looks, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Eric Moskowitz joins the show to unpack the wild true story behind his new book, *The Hardest, Longest Race*. Tune in to discover a hidden chapter of early 20th-century America and learn how cutthroat tactics, rather than superior engineering, helped build the world's most famous car brand. As the early American automobile industry was just finding its footing, this 4,106-mile ocean-to-ocean race forced drivers to battle treacherous "gumbo mud," navigate a roadless country, and rely on explosive acetylene gas headlights. Moskowitz breaks down the bizarre cast of entrants, including a con artist driver, an inventor peddling airless tires, and Ford's tactical saboteur who literally deployed armed guards at bridges to block competitors. While Henry Ford publicly claimed victory for the Model T to skyrocket his company's success, you will have to listen to find out exactly how the obscure Shawmut Motor Company exposed the secret mechanical cheating scandal that nearly changed everything. If you love uncovering the hidden rivalries and forgotten scandals of American history, be sure to subscribe to the podcast and leave a five-star review!
Tune in here to this Tuesdays edition of the Brett Winterble Show! Brett kicks off the program by talking about voter priorities and immigration policy as the midterm elections approach. He opens by asking listeners to identify the single most important issue influencing their vote, emphasizing how political narratives and media coverage can distract from core concerns. Brett highlights polling that suggests a significant portion of Americans perceive Democrats as supporting more lenient border policies, framing immigration and public safety as central campaign issues. We’re joined by Charles Moskowitz, author and political commentator, to discuss escalating tensions in the Middle East and broader questions around national sovereignty and security. Moskowitz argues that stability in the region depends on a “peace through strength” approach, emphasizing that nations like Israel have endured by firmly defending their sovereignty. He draws parallels between radical Islamist ideology and past expansionist movements, suggesting that containment—rather than direct invasion—is the most effective strategy, much like Cold War policies toward the Soviet Union. Bo Thompson from Good Morning BT is also here for this latest episode of Crossing the Streams. Brett and Bo Thompson talk about ongoing tensions with Iran and the uncertainty surrounding diplomatic efforts, as well as the rising profile of Marco Rubio within the current administration. They discuss how negotiations with Iran remain complicated by questions over leadership and trust, while noting Rubio’s steady and disciplined presence on the global stage. Bo highlights how the administration appears to be balancing diplomacy with the possibility of tougher action if talks fail. He also shares what he and the team have coming up later this week on Good Morning BT, including coverage of the Truist Championship at Quail Hollow Club Listen here for all of this and more on The Brett Winterble Show! Is the idea of “UFO Disclosure” organic or synthetic? Is it driven by internet speculation, powerful people using it as a "rip cord" to soften the fallout over the Epstein revelations, or both? Most of the major voices pushing for “disclosure” are either known frauds or linked by association with the Epstein scandal. Anna Paulina Luna and Jared Moskowitz are reportedly of the same background as Avi Loeb. Luna has repeatedly brought up the Book of Enoch and fallen angels. While some Christians, in particular, may embrace the exposure of what they believe are demons, they may not recognize that the original "Ancient Aliens" theory was conceived by a scholar named Matest Agrest. His theory paved the way for the demeaning of Jesus from Christ to alien—the idea that God did not create the world or humans; aliens did. Many of the talking points also appear scripted, such as suggesting amnesty for the very liars, thieves, and murderers supposedly involved in the cover-ups. Lara Trump's commentary on the President's so-called UFO speech could not have been more vague. She suggested President Trump had mentioned having a speech prepared to deliver at the “right time” regarding the possibility of extraterrestrial life.Any potential “disclosure” would likely be vague and based on a foundation of “what ifs” and implications, all of which drive fear and concern that can then be "remedied" with social changes and trillions spent on new technological advancements. What many hope will be “Disclosure Day” will likely be another massive gaslighting operation. It is business as usual, and the timing is perfectly aligned with diverting inquiry and anger away from the fact that nearly the entire system is engaged in human trafficking, sexual deviancy, and a dark religious cult that has been reduced to the title “Epstein files.”*The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements. Lucas Moskowitz, General Counsel at Robinhood returns to the show to talk tokenization of Real World Assets and the current state of crypto legislation. Lucas updates us on Robinhood's evolving demographics, noting that while the platform remains a hub for first-time investors, the customer base is maturing alongside the platform's product offerings, such as retirement matching and advisory services. Moskowitz also highlights the company's commitment to financial literacy. The core of the conversation shifts to the shifting regulatory landscape regarding cryptocurrency and the potential for legislative clarity under a new administration. Moskowitz breaks down the concept of Tokenization of Real World Assets (RWA), explaining how blockchain technology can democratize access to private markets, art, and real estate. The discussion covers the technical and legal differences between "native" tokens and "wrapper" products, the benefits of 24/7 liquidity, and why the United States risks falling behind global jurisdictions like the EU and Asia if regulatory frameworks do not evolve. Key Takeaways Robinhood's Evolution: The platform now serves 26 million customers. While half are first-time investors, the company is expanding into advisory and retirement products to serve users throughout their financial lifecycles. Crypto Regulation: There is a shift from "regulation by enforcement" toward legislative clarity. Moskowitz discusses the importance of comprehensive market structure bills and stablecoin legislation to provide long-term durability for the industry. Tokenization Mechanics: Tokenization is the digital representation of a real-world asset on a blockchain. This innovation promises to increase liquidity, allow for fractional ownership of high-value assets (like private equity or art), and enable faster settlement times. The "Wrapper" Concept: Moskowitz explains Robinhood's EU offering, where customers trade a tokenized "wrapper" that represents a share of US stock held in custody, distinguishing this from companies issuing native tokens directly on the blockchain. Why Lawyers Should Care: Even those outside of securities law must pay attention to tokenization, as it is poised to impact the documentation and transfer of all real-world assets, including real estate deeds and commercial contracts. Colby that ran from November 1940 to September 1943. It was created in response to the wartime reduction of imports on British and American science-fiction pulp magazines. Initially it contained stories only from Canadian authors, with much of its contents supplied by Thomas P. Kelley, but within a few issues Colby began to obtain reprint rights to American stories from Donald A. Wollheim and Sam Moskowitz. Wollheim's and Moskowitz's later accounts of the relationship with Colby differ. Moskowitz reported that he found out via an acquaintance of Wollheim's that Colby had been persuaded by Wollheim to stop buying Moskowitz's submissions. Paper shortages forced the magazine to shut down after less than three years. Today is all about mega presences—performances with so much character, life, and musicality breathed into them by their actors that they seem to haunt an entire film and stick with you long after the credits have rolled and the house lights have come on. And we are thrilled beyond words to be joined by a one-of-one artist, the great Will Oldham! Jumping off from a rather intense skydiving scene in To the White Sea, Will talks to us about how you can craft a performance by drawing on formative experiences and memories of people you once knew. He also tells us about how you can perform for an audience by in some sense becoming the audience, and brings awesome insights to all of the Coens films we cover, often bringing in counterpoint scenes from other films that unlock the richness of the performances. Special thanks to Rebecca Bulnes and her grandmother Maria for helping us with the Spanish translation of a pivotal moment in Blood Simple in a brand new segment called To the White Sea: The Latin Beat. Coens Covered: No Country for Old Men, Fargo, The Man Who Wasn't There, Blood Simple, The Big Lebowski, Burn After Reading, True Grit, Inside Llewyn Davis Plus: Jackass 3D, Minnie and Moskowitz, Longlegs, One Battle After Another, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada Want to join the study group? During the violent Charlottesville protests of 2017, journalist and author P.E. Moskowitz was only a few feet away when Heather Heyer was killed by an attacking motorist. 16 years earlier, P.E. was in middle school Spanish class a couple blocks from the World Trade Center during the 9/11 attacks. The trauma contributed to panic attacks and, finally, a mental breakdown. As they got their life back together, P.E. began to question a lot of conventional wisdom. Were they mentally ill to have such a breakdown or were they responding appropriately to enormous trauma in a difficult world? Are we looking at potential cures when we should be looking at coping or better yet coming up with ways to stop the horrors from ever taking place? They also questioned the role of drugs in mental health treatment. In the book Breaking Awake: A Reporter's Search for a New Life, and a New World, Through Drugs and in this intriguing interview, P.E. explains how they look at drugs - both the prescription and street varieties - as tools that can be used positively or negatively, to help or harm. And that patients are owed a lot more options than a shortcut to SSRIs or Adderall in their quest to feel better.Thank you to all our listeners who support the show as monthly members of Maximum Fun.Check out our I'm Glad You're Here and Depresh Mode merchandise at the brand new merch website MaxFunStore.com!Hey, remember, you're part of Depresh Mode and we want to hear what you want to hear about. Recreational ketamine use is on the rise. But why are some people using it to dissociate in the club? Ketamine – a dissociative anesthetic – is illegal without a prescription and can potentially be harmful. Yet, it has had a massive rise in recreational use over the past decade. One study found that use increased by 81.8% from 2015 to 2019 and rose another 40% from 2021 to 2022. What is driving the illicit drug's sudden popularity? And is it's dissociative properties indicative of our times? Brittany chats with P.E. Moskowitz, a journalist and author of Breaking Awake: A Reporter's Search for a New Life, and a New World, Through Drugs, which explores our national mental health and drug use crises, and Benjamin Breen, associate professor of history at UC Santa Cruz, who specializes in the histories of science, medicine and drugs and is the author of the book, Tripping on Utopia. Together they investigate why ketamine is showing up in more people's social lives.Warning: this episode contains discussion of illegal drugs and drugs use and may not be suitable for all listeners. Julia is joined by genius mind P.E. Moskowitz for a conversation about their new memoir Breaking Awake, which chronicles the mental breakdown that drove them to experiment with drugs, reckon with trauma, and draw meaning from suffering. From Klonopin and SSRIs to ketamine and LSD, they consider what our reliance on substances reveals about our modern world. Are drugs soothing us, transforming us, or just reflecting our pain? Digressions include P.E.'s commandment to “go out and get weird with it,” the dark headspace where internet mantras start to feel profound, and the unfortunate but honest truth that the only way out is through. This episode was produced by Julia Hava and edited by Livi Burdette. In this episode, Therese Markow and P.E. Moskowitz discuss P.E.'s new book, Breaking Awake, which explores their lifelong struggle with trauma and mental health. They recount their near-death experience in Charlottesville in 2017 and their subsequent journey of self-discovery. P.E. critiques the reliance on SSRIs and other medications for mental health, arguing these provide temporary relief but do not address the root causes of trauma. They emphasize the importance of community and collective grieving in addressing societal stressors. P.E. also highlights the societal pressures that drive individuals to substance abuse and the need for systemic changes to address mental health issues. Key Takeaways: Many people's struggles with trauma are deeply personal, shaped by near-death experiences, substance use, and the long process of healing through writing and therapy. Medications such as SSRIs and Adderall can help, but they often fail to address underlying trauma or the broader societal causes of distress. Economic instability, lack of community, and global crises all contribute significantly to widespread anxiety, depression, and substance use. A “quick fix” culture often prioritizes fast solutions over long-term care like therapy, community, and systemic change. Healing and resilience are most powerfully nurtured in supportive communities, where collective action and shared experiences provide hope. "If you experience [community], it makes it easier to fight, because all of a sudden you have something to fight for, not just something to fight against." — P.E. Chuck Todd unpacks how Putin's latest strikes reveal Trump was played in Alaska and why Labor Day marks a new stage in the political calendar. From looming government shutdowns and Supreme Court battles over tariffs to the total collapse of checks on Trump 2.0, the conversation digs into what—if anything—remains of the pre-Trump Republican Party. With GOP senators capitulating, RFK Jr. emboldened, and even Trump hesitant to cross him, the stakes for public health and American democracy have never been higher. Todd also explores how rumors about Trump's health could spark a political feeding frenzy, why Kennedy should be forced to prove his vaccine claims, and whether any non-MAGA Republicans are willing to buck Trump to save their party.Florida Democratic Congressman Jared Moskowitz joins Chuck Todd with a stark assessment of American politics: bipartisanship is dead, foreign interference has poisoned public discourse, and Democrats face an existential choice between fighting dirty or facing potential party destruction. Moskowitz, who represents Parkland and witnessed multiple system failures during that tragic shooting, argues that Trump's second term has fundamentally changed Democrats who now face primary voters demanding fighters while swing voters want uniters—an impossible contradiction that reflects deeper dysfunction where politicians receive no political reward for solving problems. He warns that increased gerrymandering from both parties will worsen congressional dysfunction while big tech companies have created a discourse environment where TikTok operates as a "psyop weapon" showing endless Gaza content while ignoring Uyghur genocide, demonstrating how public opinion gets manipulated by algorithms designed for engagement rather than truth. The conversation reveals a politician grappling with impossible strategic calculations as Florida officially becomes a red state through Trump-driven demographic shifts and COVID-era political realignment, while Democrats debate whether moderates should fall in line when progressives win or continue prioritizing electability over ideological purity. Moskowitz's insights into Israel's "generational reputational damage" and the effectiveness of Trump's intimidation politics—where physical threats cause Republican senators to cave—illustrate how normal democratic processes have been weaponized into permanent warfare. Looking ahead, he warns that Democratic failure in midterms could destroy the party entirely, while practical governance challenges like FEMA's disaster response capabilities face deliberate sabotage from a White House that realizes competent federal agencies undermine their political narrative, leaving states unable to handle hurricane logistics independently as climate disasters intensify. Finally, he gives his reaction to the first weekend of college football and answers listeners' questions in the “Ask Chuck” segment.Timeline: (Timestamps may vary based on advertisements)00:00 Introduction03:00 Putin's latest strikes show Trump was played in Alaska05:00 Labor day marks new stage in the political calendar06:00 Potential for showdown over government shutdown07:00 What is left of the pre-Trump Republican party?08:00 The checks on Trump 1.0 are gone in Trump 2.009:15 Rubio and Bessent are the only two checks left on Trump10:30 Supreme Court showdown looming over tariffs11:30 Trump has no legal authority to impose tariffs12:30 There will be a vote in Congress on tariffs14:00 Pre-Trump GOP would have stopped RFK Jr. 16:30 GOP Senators have all capitulated to Trump18:30 GOP Senators must grow a spine to build a post-Trump party20:00 Kennedy is putting children and seniors at risk of dying21:15 Even Trump seems to be afraid of crossing RFK Jr.22:00 Former CDC directors write joint op-ed sounding alarm on CDC24:00 Trumpworld only have themselves to blame for Trump health rumors25:00 Trump's health could become next “Epstein” frenzy26:15 If Trump limits appearances it will trigger a feeding frenzy27:30 Will non-MAGA Republicans buck Trump to save their seats?30:30 Is there anything left of the Republican party?31:45 People have forgotten the pre-vaccine era33:45 Kennedy should have to prove vaccines DON'T work35:30 Congressman Jared Moskowitz joins the Chuck Toddcast 37:00 As a Dem, could you ever get a job in a 2nd term DeSantis admin? Artist and author Maurice Sendak was able to achieve significant and enduring success in art and children's literature during his lifetime. But what secrets did he had to keep from his family, publishers, parents, librarians, and readers as a gay, Jewish man negotiating the field of children's literature? Sendak wrote and illustrated books that nurtured children and adults alike. Winner of the 1964 Caldecott Medal for Where the Wild Things Are, in 1970 Sendak became the first American illustrator to receive the international Hans Christian Anderson Award, given in recognition of his entire body of work. Sendak's work has been the subject of several extensive retrospective art shows at prestigious museums across the country. Sendak lived in Ridgefield, Connecticut with his partner Dr. Eugene Glynn for over 50 years. In this episode, my guest is Dr. Golan Moskowitz, author of Wild Visionary, Maurice Sendak in Queer Jewish Context, published by Stanford University Press in 2021. Dr. Moskowitz is an Assistant Professor of Jewish Studies and a faculty member of the Grant Center for the American Jewish Experience at Tulane University. He serves as Book Review Editor for Holocaust and Genocide Studies and as director of the Jewish American and Holocaust Literature Symposium. Preservation Connecticut has undertaken a survey of LGBTQ+ heritage sites across the state. Now, Grating the Nutmeg and Preservation Connecticut have teamed up to bring you a three-episode podcast series that pairs new research on LGBTQ+ identity and activism with accounts of the Connecticut places where history was made. The episodes include a thriving vegetarian cafe-bookstore run by lesbian feminists in a working-class former factory town, a transgender medical researcher working on an urgent public health issue in the center of Connecticut politics, and a gay, Jewish, best-selling children's book author in affluent Fairfield County. Our first LGBTQ+ episode, #212, available to listen to now, told the story of feminist and lesbian restaurants from across the country with Dr. Alex Ketchum. We visited Bloodroots, a lesbian-run vegan restaurant in Bridgeport that is celebrating 48 years in business. Congressman Jared Moskowitz joins Jo for a no-holds-barred breakdown of a week so stupid you can't make it up: Congress duck-walks away from the Epstein files, Republicans lock arms to shield the secrets their own base is demanding, and suddenly the MAGA mob is eating itself while Trump twirls behind the curtain. Moskowitz drags the whole charade from Russian nesting dolls of lies, binder theatrics, Bondi's “desk,” and a GOP so tangled they can't remember which version they're selling. But it's not just the spectacle. Jo and Moskowitz dig into the GOP's next-level sabotage on disaster response; how Kristi Noem gutted FEMA, why children in Texas paid the price, and why Republicans are poised to claim “government doesn't work” after personally setting it on fire. You'll hear why outrage matters annd exactly what Democrats must do: stay on offense, call out the lies, and never trust the old rulebook.Subscribe and Follow Jo:https://linktr.ee/jojofromjerz Hosted on Acast. Congressman Jared Moskowitz: Pro-Israel, Proudly Jewish, and Unapologetically Honest | Behind the Bima
This week on Ring of Fire! Donald Trump is getting attacked from all sides of the aisle over his acceptance of a $400 million “flying palace” airplane from the country of Qatar, that far exceeds the legal limits of what a president can accept as a gift. A new poll shows that a staggering number of Americans are opposed to the move, and less than a third are ok with it. But polls don't matter – laws do, and the law is very clear that this is way beyond illegal. During a speech at Georgetown, Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts warned that the rule of law in America is “endangered” due to the attacks on the court from a certain someone that Roberts was too scared to mention by name. It was clear that he was referring to Donald Trump even without uttering his name, and he's not wrong about the rule of law being endangered. What he failed to mention, however, is that his own court (Alito and Thomas) are a BIG part of the reason why the rule of law no longer matters. Democratic Representative Jared Moskowitz went on Fox News this week and decided to go after his own Party instead of the criminals that are running the country. Moskowitz trashed the Progressive wing of the Party, suggesting that they were too extreme to win in the midterms and suggested a more “moderate” approach. That is EXACTLY why Democrats keep losing to the most corrupt Party in American history, and Moskowitz is now part of that problem. All that, and much more, on this week's Ring of Fire Podcast!

The girlies are joined by friend of the pod P.E. Moskowitz to discuss our collective brain atrophy and the ever-deteriorating state of thinking in our society. The binchies explore the stupidity of it all—how anti-intellectualism is both a tool of fascism and a coping mechanism, why sincerity is frowned upon in the age of constant performance, and how much agency we're willing to give up in exchange for comfort. Digressions include picky eating as a moral failure, food delivery app psychosis and asking ourselves: is Sabrina Carpenter to blame for it all?
