British actor and comedian Nick Frost is reportedly in final talks to play Rubeus Hagrid in HBO's upcoming Harry Potter TV series, a decade-long adaptation of J.K. Rowling's bestselling fantasy novels. Frost, known for Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, would step into the iconic role originally portrayed by Robbie Coltrane. While HBO has yet to officially confirm the casting, Frost's cryptic Instagram post and recent social media activity have fueled fan speculation. The high-profile series is being helmed by His Dark Materials writer Francesca Gardiner and Succession director Mark Mylod, and will feature a new cast including John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, and Paapa Essiedu. If confirmed, Frost's casting would bring heartfelt humor and warmth to the beloved Hogwarts character, making him a standout choice for a new generation of fans. Keywords: Nick Frost Hagrid, HBO Harry Potter series, Harry Potter TV show cast, new Hagrid actor, HBO fantasy series, Robbie Coltrane Hagrid, Francesca Gardiner, Mark Mylod Harry Potter, decade-long Harry Potter reboot.

The Vomitour 2024 has seen everyone's favourite party slam band, Party Cannon, hitting up city after city across the UK alongside hardcore noise mongers Street Soldier and Pintglass. A tour that has already seen sell out venues, more inflatables than should be legally allowed, utter carnage in the pits, and even mayonnaise! After all, it's a Party Cannon show! A show that we summed up with this statement: There isn't a single person not grinning from ear to ear and London made sure Party Cannon enjoyed themselves too, based off their smiles. We all might be feeling a bit dumber following the show, but we're all that little bit happier. You can read our full review of the show here: https://www.gbhbl.com/live-review-party-cannon-with-pintglass-and-street-soldier-at-the-garage-highbury-islington-london-23-09-24/ London marks the halfway point of the tour and it finds the band in very good spirits. Willing to talk not just about the current tour, but the Party Cannon lifestyle, their dedicated fanbase, seeing and feeling the progression in the band, being pigeon-holed, the drawbacks of pouring hot sauce into your eyes, scary fandoms, and something unspeakable about Robbie Coltrane. On this episode of BARTEL ME SOMETHING GOOD (the world's finest Paul Bartel-themed podcast) we're finishing up the directorial career of Paul Bartel with some television odds & sods! First up are two episodes of the TV show CLUELESS, based on the popular 1995 film starring Alicia Silverstone. This 1996 series is a cut above the sitcoms of the time and brought along a surprising amount of the film's cast, and not only has Paul Bartel behind the camera.. but in front of it as well, playing a crusty old principal in one of the episodes! Then we talk about an interesting rarity; an episode of the British alternative comedy anthology series THE COMIC STRIP PRESENTS directed and co-written by Paul Bartel called DEMONELLA, starring a whole slew of familiar faces in the realm of UK comedy, including Adrian Edmonson, Jennifer Saunders, Robbie Coltrane and a beardless Paul Bartel playing Oscar Wilde! Listen and enjoy! The post Episode 235 – Bartel Me Something Good – The Comic Strip Presents: Demonella (1993) & Clueless Episodes (1996) first appeared on Cinema Smorgasbord.
This month Andy and Martin review the highly regarded 1987 BAFTA-winning Scottish drama Tutti Frutti, written by John Byrne and starring Robbie Coltrane and Emma Thompson. Unfortunately Andy disputes that high regard and is staggered that Fortunes of War (also with Thompson), another best drama nominee that year, lost out to it. He finds Tutti Frutti to be deeply unfunny and its joyful depiction of toxic masculinity difficult to stomach. Martin on the other hand believes it has merits with several characters and situations that are well drawn and memorable. Not since GBH has an old show disappointed Andy so much and and as a consequence caused such discomfort to his co-host. Have you watched it recently? And if so, what did you think? Next Time: Undermind
Prepare to get a bit silly as we salute a Python -- Eric Idle! While best known for his stint in Monty Python's Flying Circus, Eric has carved out a fine solo career including creating a stellar Beatles parody (The Rutles), writing the Broadway version of Monty Python and the Holy Grail (Spamalot), penning books, and touring the world. Oh yeah, he also was the creative force behind Monty Python's Farewell Shows in 2014. Not bad work if you can get it! A Tony and Grammy award winner, Eric shows no signs of slowing down with a new book (Spamalot Diaries) on the way and an accompanying tour. See him while you can -- he's a Legend's Legend. As always, find extra clips below and thanks for sharing our shows! Want more Idle? One of Eric's best tunes came in Monty Python's Meaning of Life in which Eric explains the galaxy. https://youtu.be/EntOjHJvYtY?si=B0Gvvzcn3gZUSTYa After Python, Eric's first huge project was The Rutles -- a parody of The Beatles that managed to be affectionate and snarky, all at the same time. Plus, it's pretty darned musical as seen in "Ouch" in which Eric's "Dirk McQuickly" takes the lead. https://youtu.be/6VNDZKa3ewE?si=jbHjqubWDrvlyX90 Eric hasn't made too many movies outside of Python, but Nuns on the Run (with Robbie Coltrane) is a perfect fit. Here Eric and Robbie, bank robbers trying to pass as nuns, try to explain the Holy Trinity. https://youtu.be/LBYs__VRqBs?si=-IsRmxqZfmFw7Jqu Eric's song "Always Look on the Bright Side of Live" has become a staple at UK funerals but during this chat with Craig Ferguson, Eric pulls out a somewhat darker companion piece! https://youtu.be/AUhu1CVzYjk?si=lpCsPwZ5icOS0JI9

It's Die Hard in a Bond reboot! In this episode, Phil, Liam, and guest Ben Rufus Green discuss the 1995 James Bond blockbuster GoldenEye and its many connections to the Die Hard franchise. They explore the premise of the film, its self-reflexivity, and the surprisingly high amount of ‘Die Hard DNA' present in the movie, which goes way beyond the historical connection between the newly-minted 007 Pierce Brosnan and original Die Hard director John McTiernan. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, MI6 agent James Bond (Pierce Brosnan) uncovers a sinister plot led by rogue Russian operatives to use a Soviet-era orbital space weapon codenamed ‘Goldeneye' to launch an attack on London. In the process, Bond teams up with Natalya Simonova (Izabella Scorupco), a Russian satellite expert, in a globe-trotting race against time to prevent the strike. The boys discuss the continuity and multiverse aspect of the Bond franchise, share their favorite Bond films, and rate their favorite Bond actors, while also discussing the very particular qualities required to play this iconic role. They also go deep on the films' excellent villains, with particular attention paid to Alec Trevelyan (Sean Bean) and Xenia Onatopp (Famke Janssen), as well as its leading lady Izabella Scorupco, and the sturdy supporting cast that includes the likes of Robbie Coltrane, Joe Don Baker, Michael Kitchen, Gottfried John, Alan Cumming and Dame Judi Dench as M. As this is a Bond movie, fortunately the boys are already wearing their tuxedos, allowing them seamless entry into the ‘Die Hard Oscars', where awards are dispensed for ‘Exceptional Thief', ‘Dick of the Movie', and ‘Best Death. As always the conversation concludes with a Bond-centric edition of the ‘Double Jeopardy' trivia quiz! So you heard us talking about our live podcast at Cape Con, but you were unable to attend? Well, you're in luck! We take you back to the beginnings of comic book horror, and then discuss two horror films adapted from comics. It's a comic book movie team-up featuring Edward Scissorhands and Hagrid from the Harry Potter series! Kind of. You do get Johnny Depp and Robbie Coltrane on the same team, investigating the menace tormenting Heather Graham's character, along with other ladies of the night, on the streets of Victorian-era London. Could it possibly be Jack the Ripper? Whoever it is, they are clearly From Hell (2001)!And then from there, let's go to Alaska, where Josh Hartnett is the youthful, handsome sheriff in a town that will be without sunlight for thirty days in winter. Nothing necessarily wrong with that, I suppose, as long as you are not a victim of seasonal affective disorder. Of course, there may be other problems. Like a group of vampires coming to town. Yeah, that could result in 30 Days of Night (2007) being a lot more challenging.
Robbie Coltrane once said, “I sometimes worry that all the beautiful things have been made.” One of his first memorable roles in a film was in Nuns on the Run in 1990. Eventually, he would land a supporting role in the James Bond franchise that featured Pierce Brosnan as Agent 007. He appeared in both Goldeneye (1995) and The World Is Not Enough (1999). His biggest break yet came when he was cast as Hagrid, the gentle half-giant, in author J.K. Rowling's film adaptations of the Harry Potter series. This week we're reviewing THREE children's movies starring Kate Winslet! The first is Pride, a BBC TV movie released in 2004. This movie boasts a large cast with Helen Mirren, Rupert Graves, Martin Freeman, and Robbie Coltrane starring alongside Kate! While this just seems like a lackluster attempt at recreating The Lion King, we did love seeing real nature shots and hearing about how they made this live-action movie. The second movie is The Fox and the Child featuring those two titular characters and no one else in a feel-good kids movie that Anne describes as "like a hug."Last AND (spoiler alert) least of the day is the 2019 animated film Swift that just made us wonder why Willem Dafoe and Kate Winslet agreed to be in it. Tune in for this 3-for-1 episode to find out how these movies rank vs. all 46 Kate Winslet movies! WebsiteInstagramMerch Support the show

linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema It's October, so that means it's once again time for Catching Up On Cinema's annual, “Kyle's Killer October” event month! All month long, Catching Up On Cinema's resident horror enthusiast, Kyle, will be taking creative control of the program, offering up new reviews for a wide variety of horror flicks from week to week. This week, Kyle and Trevor review The Hughes Brother's, From Hell (2001)! Based on the acclaimed Alan Moore comic of the same name, From Hell (2001) is a grim and grisly fictionalized account of Jack the Ripper's reign of terror in 19th century London. While the films technically stars American actors, Johnny Depp and Heather Graham, From Hell is bolstered by the presence of many excellent British stalwarts, including the likes of Ian Holm and Robbie Coltrane. Featuring lovely production design and attention to detail in both its visual stylings and satisfyingly constructed mystery elements, From Hell is far from essential viewing, though it remains an entertaining and exceptionally handsome detective feature and period piece. Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we're going to be discussing Hogwarts' loveable gamekeeper Hagrid- unpacking his early years and unveiling tragedy after tragedy. What do we really know about Rubeus Hagrid? The towering half-giant seemed to be a simple, content groundskeeper. But when we look back over the years, Hagrid's life was filled with tragedy and all sorts of challenges. Starting at the very beginning, today we're going to unpack Hagrid's life- taking a look at the highs, lows and everything in between. But before we get too deep in to the in-universe aspects of Hagrid's life, I thought I'd first enlighten you with a few little known factoids about the inspiration behind Hagrid's character. The list of Harry Potter characters inspired by REAL people is lengthy- including Severus Snape, Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and even Gilderoy Lockhart. So it shouldn't come as a surprise to you that, just like these other characters, Hagrid too was based on a real person- a biker to be precise. In ‘Harry Potter: Page to Screen: The Complete Filmmaking Journey', Robbie Coltrane reveals that Hagrid's character was modelled on a real biker. In this interview he goes on to explain that J.K. Rowling provided him with the insight that Hagrid was ‘based on a Hell's Angel she knew in the West Country'. ‘He was just huge and terrifying,' Coltrane recalled Rowling telling him. ‘And then he would sit down and talk about his garden and how his petunias had been very bad that year.' Rowling also supplied some interesting information pertaining to Hagrid's NAME- revealing that, just like many other characters in the story, his name was very carefully chosen. “Hagrid is a big drinker who's regularly seen by Harry to indulge in visits to the pub and even getting inebriated. His name alludes to his personality trait because "Rubeus" is related to the word "ruddy," which means reddish and is apparent on someone who drinks a lot.” And with those interesting factoids out of the way, let's dive in to the life of Rubeus Hagrid. Who hasn't found themselves consumed with thoughts of Pierce Brosnan films after reading the instructions on a microwaveable ready meal? And rightly so, for the Irish superstar has made a number of memorable movies over the years, including some in which he played a memorable number. But now to the iconic likes of James Bond and Thomas Crown, we can add Doctor Fate, the character Brosnan plays in the new DCEU movie, Black Adam. And on this week's Empire Podcast, The Artist Formerly Known As Bronhom tells Amon Warmann all about that, about shooting The Thomas Crown Affair, and pays a heartfelt tribute to his former Bond comrade, the late Robbie Coltrane. Our other guests this week are Emma Corrin and Michael Grandage, star and director respectively of the love-triangle melodrama My Policeman, who tell Ella Kemp all about their experiences making that movie. Either side of those, Chris Hewitt is joined in the podbooth by Helen O'Hara, James Dyer, and John Nugent for a fun episode in which they discuss the horror filmmakers who would adorn their personal Mount Rushmores, have a crack at the week's movie news including Harrison Ford joining the MCU, and review Black Adam, Park Chan-wook's Decision To Leave, Martin McDonagh's The Banshees Of Inisherin, and Paul Feig's The School For Good And Evil. Oh, and we raise a glass to our fellow colleague of such lethal cunning, Ben Travis, who got married last week to his beloved Lizzie. Up the Weds! Enjoy.
