Welcome to May, friends! The April showers are behind us, and with a new month comes a new theme. Throughout May, we are exploring 'What Horses Do For Us'. Now, day to day, we know that our hooved friends bring immense joy to our life, but we're going deeper than that, and I am so excited to introduce today's special guest. Imagine if you will being elderly with no contact with animals, and feeling a small soft nose find its way into your hand. Or being contained in prison, frustrated and seeking help, and finding that help in an unlikely source: a small shaggy shetland pony. Or you have a grieving child that you can't reach, but a small pair of fluffy ears helps that child to talk. Kingswood Shetlands and Friends was set up by Sarah Lopez, as a centre that offers equine assisted therapy, and the ponies also visit prisons and care homes. His name is Maximus Decimus Meridius... No, it's not - it's Edward Creamer and he is our very special guest on today's episode of Pole, Piaffe & Prosecco.Why the Gladiator link? Stunt rider Ed has run a training yard and competed at Grand Prix,  but when it became difficult to turn a profit running a yard, he diversified. Although he still trains, rides and teaches, he has turned his skill set to the silver screen, riding in films like Gladiator 2. Ghengis Khan said: “It's easy to conquer the world from the back of a horse”, before setting up a postal transmission system in 1224 that saw communications taken on horseback from the Mongolian capital to the Caspian sea. This method of communication continued right into the 1950s, and it is based on this route that a trip labelled as ‘The greatest equine adventure in the world' is based on, and it is called the Mongolian Derby, and in this episode we will find out all about it.  Journalist Camilla Swift has ridden most of her life, and has been lucky enough to ride at courses including Ascot, Aintree, Windsor, and over the Derby course at Epsom. Hakuna matata, dear listeners, we are going on safari in today's episode! For many of us the idea of a safari on horseback is a bucket list item. The idea of cantering alongside giraffes, or seeing the big five from the quiet of a horse is the stuff that dreams are made of, and our guests today bring that dream to life. In 1998, today's guest bought a farm in South Africa, with the intention of offering short rides around a local reserves. She and her partner quickly grew a reputation for excellent riding on well schooled horses, and their initial herd of seven horses grew to 33. This month, we've been looking at holistic, complementary and alternative therapies for horses. We've met holistic healer Jo Rose and Ian Thirkell, the man behind Arc Equine and we've talked about Zoopharmacognosy with Joanna Haslam.  In this episode, we meet a lady that has a gift for communicating with animals. She grew up with dogs and horses and remembers first communicating with a horse at the age of 10-years-old. She trained as a healer with what is now known as The Healing Trust 21-years-ago and developed her spiritual understanding and view of the world by attending workshops and courses ranging from soul development and shamanism to crystal and colour healing. She is a qualified teacher, and a trained Equine Assisted Psychotherapist, but she joined us to talk about her experiences as a horse whisperer. Last week, Katie and Tania we kicked off alternative and holistic therapies month last week, and this week we are meeting the man behind a device that you'll find in tack rooms up and down the country, and the story behind it is really quite unique.  Those of you that have had horses with lameness and used this device will be glad that this gentleman left his career in the police force to become a house husband to raise his children and to support his wife in her bid to go to university. But who am I talking about, and what does that have to do with horses, I hear you cry? Well, it was this bold move that led to his wife beginning a PhD in micro current technology, which led to - you've guessed it - the birth of the inimitable Arc Equine. This week we find out all about how the Arc came into being with its founder, Ian Thirkell. It's a new month and this month, Katie and Tania delve into the world of complimentary and holistic therapies. As we approach the winter months, our animals - like us - often start to feel their ailments a little, and while there is no replacement for veterinary medicine, there is much we can do to support it and to complement it. This month we are focussing on exactly that, and looking at ways to keep our horses comfortable and healthy with minimal intervention.  has studied a wide range of holistic therapies, including reiki, applied zoopharmacognosy, McTimoney therapy, Merishia massage, Myofascial release, kinesiology taping and thermal imaging amongst others.
