Kaarle McCulloch is a former Olympic Track Sprint Cyclist with a 15-year career at the top of her sport including Olympic Bronze and 4 World Championships. Retired in 2021, Kaarle went on to coach the British Women's Sprint Team from 2022-2023 with great success and recently returned to Australia in late 2023 to fulfil the same role as Australian Women's Sprint coach and QAS coach. Kaarle has a degree in Health and Physical Education and is a former level 1 ASCA coach. David Watts has been preparing athletes for competitive success for well over 10 years. Beginning his career at the QAS between 2011-2016, David has since spent time at the Geelong Football Club as a rehabilitation coach and also at the Melbourne Demons as the head of strength and power. More recently he has returned to the QAS and is currently working with track and field, cycling and beach volleyball athletes. David is accredited with the ASCA as a Master L3 Coach and this will be his fourth time presenting at the ASCA international conference QUOTES “I am from a family of teachers and I believe really strongly that coaching is teaching and teaching is coaching. So a lot of my coaching philosophy centres around pedagogical practices and trying to create learning environments for athletes” “For track cycling, I feel very strongly that its foundation is in strength. So gym forms the first and probably the most important part of becoming fast and I work off a sort of a triangle model where strength is at the bottom. To be powerful, you need to be strong. And then to be fast, you need to be powerful.” “I don't like to call it taper because I think taper has some connotations around it and athletes think that they're going to feel good and that everything's going to go amazing but it never ever happens that way. And so, unload for me is all in its title. It's about taking out work as we get closer to the event.” “I'd say 90 % of time the gym and bike loading is aligned. So if we've got a de-load week or a low week, it's low in the gym as well.” “So in the team sprint cycling, we've got three types of acceleration, we've got low range, so from zero, we've got mid-range which is our high power and we've got, you know, high range acceleration, which is our speed. So that's how the week looks. Work high torque, high strength in the start of the week. We work high power midweek, and then we work that sort of back end speed at the end of the week. And that doesn't really shift through all of the periodized phases. What shifts is the specificity of it.” “We have a monthly catch up with my group and every month they have to present something back on what they've learned through the month and that gives them accountability and ownership over what they're doing.” SHOWNOTES 1) Kaarle and David's backgrounds as athletes and coaches 2) What type of collaboration is needed when developing athletes and Kaarle's philosophy on sprint cycling performance 3) Benchmarking events in sprint cycling and periodization approaches from the macro- to the micro-cycle 4) What base building, general prep, specific prep and unload phases can look like for athletes in sprint cycling 5) Different weekly structures and adapting the structure around different athletes and their experience and fiber typology 6) Physical benchmarks for athletes in sprint cycling and 220kg full squats 7) Pedagogical approaches to developing athletes and session planning considerations and creating conditions for athletes to both fail and play 8) One legged box jumps and the power of vulnerability PEOPLE MENTIONED Anna Meares Matthew Denny Brene Brown

"I had done great things in the sport before, but I had never won a medal. That was something that had tormented me and eluded me for so long. And I finally got two of them. So it feels great. It feels even better when you feel so much ownership over them. I know that it was my decision-making and risk-taking that led to those outcomes." My guest for today's episode is U.S. Olympian and two-time bronze medalist Grant Fisher. Grant had a career-defining year in 2024, standing on the podium twice at the Paris Olympics in the 5000m and 10,000m. But true to his form, he's not content to rest on those accomplishments. He's gearing up for a new challenge in 2025 by signing on for the inaugural season of Grand Slam Track. In this interview, he shares his thoughts on how the Grand Slam model can elevate track visibility, attract new fans, and give athletes like him more opportunities to test themselves against the best in the world. He's in a racer group that will contest a 3K and 5K against the likes of Luis Grijalva, Ronald Kwemoi and one more racer that is expected to be announced soon.  We dive into Grant's reflections on his breakout 2024 season, the lessons he's carrying into 2025, and how he's preparing for a shot at both glory and Grand Slam Track and some more hardware at the world Championships in Tokyo. Have you been watching the Olympics? We can't get enough of them. This week's episode of The Second of Strength podcast talks about why winning the bronze metal is "better" than winning the silver. Now clearly, silver is the 2nd place and 2nd is better than 3rd right? Or is it? One study shows that that isn't actually true and people who get a bronze metal are actually happier than people who get the silver. Why? Because of counterfactual thinking and a focus on "what might have been". This episode will help you shift the "what might have been" thinking to focus on "what is". The result is a happier you. -> Subscribe to the show -> Click here to follow on Instagram -> Share with someone you love

Welcome back to more than running with Dana. I'm your host Dana Giordano, and on this show, I talk to the women in and around the running community who inspire me daily. I started this podcast when I was running professionally and I felt like the deeper stories of women were not being amplified. Stay for real conversations about confidence, mental health, body image, motivation, and of course, running. This episode of More Than Running is supported by New Balance. This is a mini-series featuring New Balance's Stolen Starts ambassadors and Team New Balance athletes. This episode was recorded back in December but was postponed due to personal events for our guests. I have often felt like the ends of our running community have felt so separate and what better way to celebrate women in running by round table conversations with the women making change within their communities and reaching new heights on the professional track circuit. On the community end of the spectrum are the women of The Stolen Starts, a women's running collective started in 2021. 10 ambassadors make up The Stolen Starts and include women from London, South Korea, Berlin, LA, Paris, and more. Each woman in the collective was selected because they are each powerful advocates for specific causes in their respective communities. In this episode, we meet Elodie Watrin a talented musician from Paris who uses her platform to promote sustainable practices. On the other end of the running spectrum and the world, we met Emma Coburn, Olympic Bronze medalist and 10x USA National Champion in the Steeplechase. Emma Coburn is also highly passionate about sustainability and shares her outlook on how to be connected to her own environment. Over the next 45 minutes, you will hear an incredible conversation about sustainability, running, community, and more. It's like going on a run with your favorite people. Elodie and Emma are both more than running, and I hope you enjoy this series! MTR is a CITIUS Mag podcast and is edited by Mike Zurolo.

Olympic Bronze medalist 2022 Super League Champion and a runner up in 2021 2022 World Triathlon series overall 3rd with wins in Leeds and Hamburg WTS events A Silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham after a crappy penalty call had him sidelined with a 10-second penalty before the spring finish for Gold. A National 5km Champion for New Zealand with a personal best of 13.28 ( 2.42 k pace or 4.21-mile pace) Hayden Wilde is a prime example of how Super League Triathlon can kickstart an athlete's career – and give them a great nickname. Hayden was already accomplished at swim-bike-run as a junior on the less well known off-road scene. But he really came of age on the world triathlon stage racing Super League, where his amazing chase from behind in Super League Malta earned him the moniker of the “Maltese Falcon”.   Growing up in Whakatane, New Zealand, Hayden Wilde has always had a love for the outdoors, for exploring and being active. His childhood consisted of every outdoor adventure sport under the sun and multiple other pursuits. Although he suffered a terrible loss as a young man when his father passed away in tragic circumstances, Wilde's focus didn't wane and he made a push for greatness.   Timestamps 2:23 - Interview with Hayden Wilde begins 4:56 - What a year! And his lowest low in performance in his career. 54:11 - Hayden describes how he has given back to his family with the success he has had. A lot of athletes get into their game at a young age, but when Jenn Salling's father took her to watch her first softball game at two weeks old, she might've become the team's youngest fan. Her dad's talent as a fastpitch catcher, his camaraderie with his teammates, and her mom's exemplary toughness gave Jenn all the ingredients she needed to excel on the field in both soccer and softball, but it was the defensive challenge that the bat and ball presented that eventually led her to focus on the latter. Jenn's stellar play in British Columbia got the attention of the University of Oregon, where she played her first college softball season. But after she got a taste of big city life when representing Team Canada at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Jenn decided to transfer to the University of Washington. It soon became clear that she'd made a wise choice, as the Huskies won their first national championship. A decorated stint in the pros followed and at the Tokyo Games last year, Jenn capped an incredible career by helping Canada go one better than their 4th place finish in Beijing, as the team captured the bronze medal. She's now an assistant coach with the Canadian national team. Frazer Clarke is a professional boxer. He won an Olympic Bronze medal at Tokyo 2020 whilst captaining Team GB throughout the games. He is 2-0 in his professional career and has one of the most unique stories I've heard. Professionally, going from working door security at boxing events, to actually getting in the ring. Missing out narrowly twice on making the olympic team (once to Anthony Joshua), doing the rounds in the amateurs before ranking no.1, then turning pro and doing the business with two knock outs. Personally, Frazer experienced the London terrorist attack first hand, had a running with death after being stabbed three times and more incomprehensible events that are all shared in this episode. I hope you enjoy! ----------- For more from Take FLIGHT - https://takeflightworld.com/ ------------ Sponsored by HUX. https://huxhealth.com/ use code 'TF20' for 20% off your first order. #takeflightpodcast #boxing #frazerclarke #podcast #performance #fear #business #mindset #lifecoach #coaching #wellness #interview #mentalhealth #spirituality #athlete #knifecrime #knockout #entrepreneur #takeflight #markwhittle
